Default cotton mouth

My son is a 1st year wrestler. There are times in his matches he has what he calls cotton mouth. What are the causes and how can we prevent this.
Thanks,
Bobby D

Some of that is just fight or flight response. I used to get it all the time as a wrestler.

The only thing I can think of is making sure that he's really well hydrated, which is something wrestlers forget when they're trying to make weight by dropping all their water weight.

Stupid as it was (and trust me, it was STUPID) we used to wear trashbags under our sweats, do pushups and jumping jacks in the sauna, and spit all day long. I'm amazed no one died!

Awesome vid... you gotta get this down to the kid pics thread in off topic!

I loved wrestling. Watching that really brought back memories. Which one was your kid? The one in red?

We use to do the same thing. Our weigh ins were at 7:00 am but the gym was open at 6:00am with the heater on full blast so that we could run.

yeah we used to practice for 3 hours 6 days a week with the temp at 95 degrees in the wrestling room. Kids wore plastics and such in there too. I can remember eating 2 rice cakes all day long.

Like the others said, just make sure he is hydrating well. As soon as he weights in, he needs to be drinking.

Hydration certainly is an important issue surrounding this concern but, JP is still spot on with his statement that cotton mouth is a fight or flight response.

Possibly in this case, while no perceived threat truly exists, the body can still respond to it. For instance, even in paraplegics, a response will exist even though the nervous system connection has been severed. Just because they don't "feel the pain", the body does and will respond to it accordingly.

My recommendation would be to come up with a pre-match routine that can help stave off this response. It can be something very simple--ex. re-tying your shoes prior to walking out onto the mat every time you step out there.

Many successful athletes over the years used to do some strange things that were constant throughout their careers. Ex. Nomar Garciaparra's pre-pitch routine. Shayne Graham, place kicker for the Bengals, will walk down by the goal post and look for trash on the ground to test the wind. He knows that the flags indicate wind direction but, his little stroll before it is his time to shine is his way of getting his mind ready to complete his task.

Thanks for the time as always. I hope this helps.

Very interesting...A pre-match ritual. Something i'll have him come up with this week. Thanks.
