Default Stretching

I just started coaching a youth soccer team and I was wondering about stretching. When I played we did static stretching, and from what I've heard that didn't help us too much. Anyone have any suggestions on stretches that would be good.

(I know I'm supposed to stretch before I lift, but I just do a light set or two for the muscle group.)

Also, search out more information about dynamic flexibility or dynamic mobility warm-ups. The information is out there. Brian's newsletter addresses this type of information regularly.

The problem with basic static stretching before a game or practice is that in is calming in nature. You want to excite the nervous system and the kids, not calm them down before hand.

Using things like short jogs, bodyweight drills like lunges, bear crawls, squats, etc... to get them moving and warmed-up would be a much better choice.

Brian has a book called "Training young athletes The Grasso Method" (or something similar to that) that I can't seem to find on his website but it would be a huge help to you. Its a collection of things he has written, including programing for kids of all ages, that would shed light on a lot of the questions you have.

I guess that counts as a "thought"

SG, if you're a real person, studies have shown that passive-static stretching is actually detrimental to muscle and other connective tissue composition, in adults as well as children (there are materials available at IYCA.org). Active-static stretching, though, is beneficial as it develops flexibility under stress, which is a common dysfunction that results in a lot of non-impact injuries. (/Cliffs Notes)
