First, Hello to all I know from days of future passed.

Question;

I have a Nephew who has just turned 15. He's a classic ectomorth with a body like it was made of matches and has never been active or good at sports. Finally he has come to the realization that he'd like to get into some kind of routine and is working with a trainer at his school.

His Mam, my sister is a little worried (aren't all mums) and is asking if there is any available literature she could buy for him to help him on his way to a fitter, healthier lifestyle in a sensible fashion.

Reading through this forum a little bit I found a lot of great advise on how young athletes should train but I’m looking for some basics on ‘how to become a young athlete having spent 15 years sat on your duff playing computer games and living on crappy food’.

They don’t have great internet access at home so preferably something in book format would be appreciated.

As a starting point I was going to stick my old copy of TAP in the mail which gives out good solid eating advise.

Any comments, thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance for the help.

Cheers

Richie

I would highly recommend buying Brian Grasso's books. Complete Functional Conditioning and The Grasso Method. They are available for purchase on www.developingathletics.com.

As a 14 year old athlete, i'd recommend Core Performance by Mark Verstegen and Scrawny to Brawny by Mike Mejia and John Berardi. The diet stuff has been really easy to understand and i really like how core performance puts its emphasis on changing your lifestyle as a whole. the information is straight up and easy to understand.

I agree and disagree with that statement. John Berardi is a nutritional genius and his work carries great value. On the other hand, Mark Verstegen is a sub-par trainer made popular by who he has been affiliated with and a book that has very little value in the strength and conditioning field. This individual needs information on youth development. Verstegen's book may look at developing a healthy lifestyle but has no relevance in regards to the developmental concerns of young people.

I also got an e-mail from Lou who recommended the Berardi and Mejia book and I subsequently ordered Scrawny to Brawny for him, he should have it next week. I've always had a lot of respect for Mike Mejia, his opinions and his programs so I'm sure it will be an excellent book for him. He’s located in the UK and it was <£10 from amazon, a deal, a steal, sale of the century.

I’ll also give him a link to this site.

Cheers
