Default The Bunny Log: Hop to it!

I am Bunny. I'm not actually a Bunny, though I do hop a lot. But for the purposes of this Log you may call me Bunny. :P

I'd like to keep better track of my workouts, in part so that I can get a better idea of what is working for me and what is not.

I started working out again on April 22 of this year. Since then I've lost 28 pounds. As of today I have worked out 9444 Minutes since 4/22 (157 Hours and 24 Minutes). The last few weeks I have been getting tired. Mentally, emotionally and sadly most of all physically. I have had great momentum and I don't want to lose and once of that energy.

I also need to be aware of how much I'm doing certain activities so I don't overdo them. For example I was swimming quite a bit and now my shoulders have been sore and achy the last few weeks. :/ This is frustrating as I LOVE swimming and it had become a big part of my workout time. So now I have to step back a bit and rework my approach to swimming laps.

I'd like to cut out any waste of my exercise time so that everything I'm doing is moving forward towards my goal.

My goal is simply this: To be alive without the added hassle and worry of being overweight.

In workable terms I'm thinking that could be getting down to 150 Pounds. A number chosen for it's place on the BMI charts for my height. It's the middle of the road normal weight.

I have found that I don't do well with weight loss as a goal. In my experience that is something that happens at it's own level/pace. (Or I'm just so new at this I haven't figured out how to lose a set amount of weight within a set time frame...)

So my goals are based around things I can control over. Such as how much I exercise and how much/what I eat.

I'm still trying to find the right amount of time working out that works for me each day/week. The lowest I've done since I got started was 75 Minutes (I was traveling that week) and the highest was 851 Minutes. Right now I'm considering 660 Minutes/11 hours to be my weekly goal. That doesn't mean much but it gives me something quantifiable to work towards.

As far as food goes I'm aiming for 2000 Calories a day with 25% Fat / 25% Protein / 50% Carbs. Some days are easier than others. Days I plan ahead are the best. I'm also still playing with the % to see what works best for me. I tend to eat a lot of fruit and veggies so my carbs can be out of balance and throw in avocado or walnuts and the fat % gets out of whack.

Though I do have goal weights to reach, just not a time frame to go with them. Right now I am working on reaching 10% off my starting weight.

Stats:
34
5'7"
318 lbs (8/24/09)
Starting weight as of 4/22/09: 346

I don't have current measurements (last taken in July) but since I started I've lost 2 inches off my waist, 3 inches off my hips, 1 inch off my chest and 3 inches off each thigh (yay!! I love the leg press!!).

I have a long way to go, but I am feeling pretty damn good about what I've done so far. The physical endurance I've gained these last few months has been amazing.

Personal Motivation:
Getting Fit for long term health as I get older.
Self Confidence!
Physical Endurance! (I'm sick of being embarrassed that I get tired if I walk so far and of not being able to do all the things I want to do that having this weight holds me back from doing.)
Travel in October - Working towards not having to use the seat belt extender anymore and being more comfortable in those airline seats.
Travel in December / X-mas Party Stuff - Being even more comfy while flying and It would be nice to wear a dressy dress and feel like I look pretty and not buy some huge black thing that feels more like trying to hide than wearing the darn thing.
Travel in May 2010 - Rome!

Other non workout relevant stuff about me is that I'm in a relationship. We've been together for 11 going on 12 years. I have a special kitty. I love to read. Zombie movies are the best movies ever. I enjoy knitting, especially socks. I love cooking and baking. Especially figuring out how to make yummy healthy recipes. We also keep a small home garden. I love having super fresh salads out of the garden. Tomatoes are the best tasting food stuffs ever made.

And if I could give up land and just swim forever I'd be pretty damn happy. Sadly you can't knit in the ocean. Wool/Silk and salt water do not mix. ;)

Hey Bunny. *waves* I'm Joyce, and it's nice seeing a new, self-confident "face" here. I like your goals, and you sound like a positive person all around. BTW, I'm a fellow cat lover, and enjoy a good zombie flick myself. Welcome.

Hello Joyce!

Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm trying to be self confident... some days are easier than others. Good to know you like Zombie Movies and Kitties too. They are a good combo. Heh.

Hello, Hello and welcome!

Great dedication to know minutes worked out, etc. It is very empowering to start taking control of your body and destiny, isn't it?

Even before we come to the impressive "after' pictures, just to see and feel the differences on a daily basis is so encouraging.

Also, I am a dog lover myself (this is well documented in my log) but I have had many cats and could probably tell enough cutesy stories about them to give any cat lover a serious case of the 'warm fuzzies' (like the two sister cats I had that had their kittens together on the same night, and chose to raise 12 kittens totally 'together')

I like bunnies too, so we should be good

Oh, darn; Cadi got here before I did, and is spreading her dog-germs already!

Cat lover! Cat lover! Glad to have another on our team! (eat dog hair, dog lovers, hahaha)

Ok, I like bunnies too, well, I like the word bunny; it's warm and fuzzy, sort of like cats! And I love the name of your log. That's what drew me here in the first place.

Sounds like you are off to a good start, Bunny. Congrats on your progress so far. Are you following any workout program, or looking for one? There's a lot of us here doing NROLFW (New Rules of Lifting for Women), and it's a great place to start, good results quickly. Just my 2 cents.

Very Empowering. Plus having a realistic idea of what I am and am not capable of at this moment. Knowing I can and am improving my ability to be alive better is awesome. *L*

So long as you like Cats too that's okay. Heh. Dogs are okay, if they are on a leash and their owners realize I don't know their dog and don't find it charming to have a huge dog running at me when I'm out walking. In fact all my problems with the world center around humans. :P

My Honey calls me Bunny. Since I interact with him most it's the name I am most often called. Perhaps it's all the hoping and nose wiggling I do...

I haven't explored the NROLFW yet, although I see a lot of good comments about it here. I may have to check the book out and see what the principles are and if it's right for me. I picked up a book months ago and just haven't gotten around to exploring it. o.0 For the most part as far as lifting goes I have been taking some advice and going from there. Though I haven't even lifted at all since the end of July. Time got away from me... Opps. This week I will be getting back into that.

In general as far as my workouts go I have been trying different things and seeing what I like.

Sunday 8/30/09

Daily Nutrition Summery:

Breakfast: Raspberries, Blueberries, Clover Black Cherry Yogurt, Dorset Berries & Cherries Cereal = 367
Morning Snack: 0
Lunch: Banana, Organic Tortilla, Light String Cheese, Uncured Turkey Ham = 352
Afternoon Snack: Fat Free Cottage Cheese, Tomatoes, .4 oz Ruffles, 2 Lil’ Drums Chocolate & Vanilla = 511
Dinner: 2 Buffalo Burgers, 2 Oroweat Sandwich Thins, Tomato, Onion, Dill Pickle, Yellow Mustard = 596
Evening Snack: Banana, Grapes, Cherries = 171

Total Calories: 1998
24% of the calories are from fat, 24% from protein, 52% from carbs

Daily Exercise Summery:

41 Minutes Walking (by the wetland area, saw a snowy egret and a bunch of ducks plus the gorgeous Mountain View)
40 Minutes playing basketball
20 Minutes So You Think You Can Dance Cardio Funk DVD (Hip Hop Workout)
= 101 Minutes

Since I just started posting and to give you an idea of my workouts, although last week was by no means normal here’s everything else I did for the week.

Monday: 60 Minutes Morning Aquafit + 30 Minutes swimming laps + 50 Minutes Evening Aquafit + 60 Minutes Zumba = 200 Minutes

I had no energy Tuesday so I took the day off.

Wednesday: 30 Minutes Swimming Laps (I went for an Aquafit Class but they cancelled it for Pool Maintenance. They closed the pool 30 minutes into my swim and I did not bring proper shoes to do anything else at the gym since I was just expecting to swim. Grr!)

Thursday: 55 Minutes Aquafit + 60 Minutes Zumba = 115 Minutes

Friday: 60 Minutes Aquafit + 20 minutes swimming laps = 80 Minutes

Saturday: 30 Minutes Master Blaster + 37 Minutes So You Think You Can Dance Cardio Funk DVD = 67 Minutes ( I showed up and the Pool was closed and the Aquafit Class was cancelled for the day die to more Pool Maintenance! Thankfully I was planning on doing some Elliptical afterwards so I brought other workout gear. There was a class going on with an instructor who asked me to try it the week before so I went to that. It was called Master Blaster and was a Cardio Dance Type Thing with some lunges, crunches and a few other things at the end. I showed up halfway through class and did that. It wore me out! That was the most intense Cardio Class I’ve ever been to. I’m going to try the Step/Sculpt class taught by those instructors on Tuesday.)
Monday through Saturday = 492 Minutes

Total for Week: 593 Minutes (9 Hours and 53 Minutes)
August 2009: 2366 Minutes (So Far)
Goal for Month = 2200 Minutes

Wednesday & Sunday are my “days off”. At least a day off from going to the gym. Some days I actually take a rest day, and some days I consider what I do more as play. Though I treat it as exercise and keep moving at a pace to keep my heart rate up.

And now off to my first Aquafit Class of the day. Wheeeeeee!!!

Monday 8/31/09

Daily Exercise Summery:

10 Minutes Swimming laps
50 Minutes Aquafit
60 Minutes Zumba
= 120 Minutes
According to CalorieKing.com I burned 1503 Calories... I have no idea how accurate that is.

The aquafit class was 10 minutes of running in place at various speeds 50%/75%/100%, followed by a combination of swimming laps with a kick board and water strength training with water dumbells. It was one of the Monday night instructors less inspired classes and she seemed irritated and distracted by the people who kept talking during the class while she was trying to tell them what to do. I don't blame her, but it sucks that I get a shitty class experience because people won't shut up and do what they came to the class for.

The same instructor taught the zumba class and was super awesome. I got a great workout and was able to keep up with the pace and follow along with the "dance" moves.

Daily Nutrition Summery:

Breakfast: cherries, grapes, 2 eggs, turkey ham, 1 multi seed bread, 1/2 cheddar cheese, orange juice, Verde Salsa = 559
Morning Snack: 0
Lunch: Banana, Oroweat Sandwich Thin, 2 Tuna Patties, Verde Salsa, Salad w/ Basil Olive Oil = 656
Afternoon Snack: 0
Dinner: 2 Pork Chops, Corn on the Cob = 591
Evening Snack: 2 Chocolate Ice Cream Truffle Bars = 200

Total Calories: 2006
31% of the calories are from fat, 28% from protein, 41% from carbs

I was going to workout in the morning, but when I showed up the pool was closed again. AUGH!!! That was the third time in 6 days. You'd think I would have thought to call ahead to make sure it was open. At least I learned from my mistakes and called for the evening workout.

Also I normally eat snacks and smaller meals. My schedule is way off. I need to get back into a planned meal/snack routine.

Thanks, Lyrica.

Having never taken any kind of Aerobic Dance Class before Zumba I have nothing to compare it to, but I must say I LOVE IT. Mostly.

It depends on the instructor greatly as to how much fun and what kind of a workout you get though. I've had 4 different instructors for Zumba. 2 were super awesome and 2 were hit or miss. The latter are both newish.

The first two explained the workout steps before and during the movement. I'm not a dancer by any means, I'm just trying to be a better mover. Having an instructor who understands that I'm there to burn calories and not try to make the most eloquent dance moves is important... though in the few months I've been doing Zumba my grace and ability to follow along has shockingly improved. *L*

The things that were not helpful from the new instructors is that one of them explains nothing at all and then sorta looks at the class like were insane that we can't follow along. She does these movements and expects us to follow along with her instead of a moment after her. I stopped going to her class as it was wasting my time and I was so lost and unable to follow along I wasn't getting a good workout. Since then she has improved. I guess people complained to the management. I took her class Monday and it was awesome though.

The other less competent instructor was not given a regular class. She spent most of the class time challenging anyone to teach it better than she could. So awkward. She also spent most of the class time playing with the music system rather than doing a class. Waste of My Time. Ugh.

As for the Zumba moves themselves they are pretty damn fun. Lots of salsa/rumba moves (I'm told), lots of hip movement with a focus on keeping the core tight. Most of the class has a Latin flavor but some of it also has a Belly Dancing or even BollyWood Vibe going on. Very fun stuff.

I have two left feet also, but I seem to be working around that. If it's offered at your gym and you don't have to pay extra for it I'd give it a try a few times. You might just have some fun.

Thanks, Espi.

Well my little Fuzz Butt is super special because she went through great challenges in her life to find me, plus a whole bunch of fun stuff.

She likes to tap dance on my head at night as well as test my forehead and eyebrows for flavor while I sleep. It's very shocking when she licks my eyelid though. Turns out I has a flavor. :P

She is also plotting to rule the world. So far her efforts have ensnared the two humans in our house plus she has followers/admirers around the world.

She has a huge dog bone... actually it's like a cow femur that she enjoys licking in the backyard as well as bushes of catnip she likes to stick her face into while wigging her butt with as much happiness as can be expressed by a butt.

Her best friend is a zombie fashion model.

Lately she has taken to playing Hide and Go seek with me 2 or 3 times a day. She will meow from another room until I peek out from behind a door/wall and then she will meow at me. I'll step back so she can't see me and then peek at her again, which makes her meow like she is surprised. We'll do that a few times until she gets up and walks over to find me. So cute!

In general she follows me around during the day when I'm at home. She has a bed and a climbing tower in my office so we can be together when I work. (work from home)

She also, much to the chagrin and now finally acceptance of my honey sleeps next to me at night... when she is not tap dancing or making sure I can has a flavor.

She has her own exercise routine she does daily, although the honey who started it calls it her Enrichment Program. She walks around the backyard with human supervision and if she just wants to sit down he carries her to the back of the property and makes her walk to the house. She also goes through a tunnel/obstacle course to get to her dinner each night. Plus she plays rough with My Honey but knows not to do that with me. She also likes to play with balls and toys with the honey. I'm her cuddle monkey though.

She is not a snobby/aloof stereotypical cat. She is the most friendly and attention seeking kitty ever.

Welcome, Bunny!!

I love Zumba too, but it's not available much unless I join another health club. I do Jazzercise and love it. Zumba is quite the workout on your feet!! I love the world beat aspect.

I'm wondering about your So You Think You Can Dance DVD. I don't really like instruction in the middle of the class unless I really feel it doesn't interrupt the flow too much. I read on Amazon.com that a few people thought the instruction really interrupted. Now that you've been doing it for a while, doesnt' that bother you, or is the DVD arranged so it is lots of exercise with separate instruction?

Your quantity of activity is inspiring!

Hi Bunny! I like your log. I am a cat AND dog lover! Right now at our house it's cats 6, dogs 4. Bunnies 0, unless you count the wild ones running around in the field.

Way to go on all the activity! I'm looking forward to seeing you continue to shrink.

Hello Etana,Thanks.

I've heard that the Jazzercise is really fun too. I have a friend who wants me to go do that with her. I don't see paying to do that on top of the gym at this time though.

I just got the SYTYCDance Cardio Funk DVD last week. I've done two of the workouts so far. Disco and Hip Hop. They have a separate how to section from the workout section or you can have it run together. Then in the actual workout section there are three levels from slowest to fastest. The routines aren't crazy long though so they run through them three times without stopping. The biggest holdup is if you go through all three levels at the same time. They have these graphics that play for 15 or 20 seconds between the 3 levels and that is a bit irritating. So far it hasn't annoyed me too much.

I'm a dork and love the show so it's kinda neat seeing the dancers doing this stuff. Next time I use the DVD I'm going to do Travis's contemporary. Woo! *L*

I do think I get a better/consistent level of my heart rate being up at the Zumba class, but on days when I don't have time to go or there isn't a class it's a fun way to get some activity in.

Hiya MoonDust.

6 Cats and 4 Dogs is a lot to handle. How do you deal with the pet fur? In the summer months I shave my little furball. It'd be too hot for her here.

Thanks, I'm trying to keep going forward.

Tuesday 9/1/09

Daily Exercise Summery:

60 Minutes Step/Sculpt
7 Minutes Treadmill @ 3.5 MPH Incline 2
= 67 Minutes
According to CalorieKing.com I burned 1002 Calories... I have no idea how accurate that is.

That was the first time I tried the Step/Sculpt Class. The fact that I'm alive today is shocking! :P

I will be doing that again next Tuesday. I'm missing out on a fun Aquafit Class with an awesomely supportive instructor and a few people I actually like to do this, but it is SOOOOOO worth it. Excellent workout just in terms of cardio, but it was also interesting to do some strength training stuff with that. It wouldn't replace an actual strength training session, but in terms of endurance I think it will help.

I was going to do the elliptical after the class, but my legs were jelly. I did a few minutes of the treadmill before I decided I was done for the night.

Daily Nutrition Summery:

Breakfast: cherries, Tortilla, Hummus = 391
Morning Snack: Kellogg's Fiber Plus Chocolate Chip Bar = 120
Lunch: 2 oz Soft Pretzel, Reese's Pieces, Fat Free Dairy Free Tart Frozen Yogurt topped with strawberries, blackberries & coconut = 580
Afternoon Snack: Cottage Cheese, pinquito beans, Rotel Tomatoes Mild, Chicken, .5 oz Cheddar Cheese = 791 (I was super hungry)
Dinner: Portabella Mushrooms, Broccoli, Light String Cheese, Carrots = 224

The "lunch" was in part because we were out at the movies and I didn't plan well. It was sorta last minute that we decided to go. We saw Halloween 2. It was way more intense than the first remake. *sigh* Why can't they make original movies anymore. It was a good movie, even if I had to cover my eyes for a few moments. There are some things I just don't ever need to see. Ick.

August Wrap Up

August 3: 318
August 31: 319

Weight Change: +1
August Exercise: 2486 Minutes (41 hours and 26 Minutes)
My goal was to get in 2200 Minutes

Granted some of that may still be water weight from last weeks monthly cycle... but some of it most certainly is not. Next Mondays weigh in will give me a better idea where I am.

I did not do well in August at all. I know exactly what happened.

10 Days of revelry that would make Bacchus proud and maybe a little envious. The human body was not meant to consume 2 to 4 bottles of wine a day. Plus Belgium beer... Or that much goat cheese/brie, bread products and whatever the hell else was consumed in that time.

Between the wine tasting/vineyard tours and eating in restaurants for most meals I undid a bit of what I had done.

What's done is done though and all I can do is learn from this. *sigh*

Follow that week by a week of not feeling well. Related? *L* Then a week of GirlieTime and exhaustion and it would appear that I've gained some weight back.

At least I know this week I have been getting back on schedule and I'm feeling better so no excuses for not going to work out.

Back when I first got started I'd wake up everyday and go workout no matter what. It never occurred to me not to. Nose to the stone and this is your life now. The last few weeks after the 10 day visit from my brother, that included so much wine, I was a bit depressed. Having family stay with you is always hard. Not on me mind you, but my honey. My brother and my honey disagree about politics and religion and whatever else they can think of. Ugh.

It's always been hard for me to get back into my routine after a break like that. I did work out some but it wasn't my normal life routine.

I have such a bad memory that after 10 days I forgot was my life was.

I feel like my brain has reset itself back into my new norm. (Well my new norm since the end of April.) I can't go back in time and undo those calories, but I can keep going forward.

Hop Hop Hop!

Now some numbers:

September Goals/Intentions:
Exercise Minute for Month of September: 2400 Minutes
Calories per day for Month: 2000 - 25/25/50

Wednesday 9/2/09

Daily Exercise Summery:
Exercise Minutes for September: 67 out of 2400

I took the day off... and nothing bad happened.

Daily Nutrition Summery:

Breakfast: 2 New York Deli Italian Sausages, Tortilla = 490
Morning Snack: Roman Meal Elements Oatmeal, Fruit 2 Day Peach Mango Juice = 290
Lunch: Tomatoes from our Garden & Carrots = 90
Afternoon Snack: Fresh Homemade Pumpkin Pie from a Pumpkin I killed Mwhahaha!!, Homemade whipped cream = 279
Dinner: Canned Corn & Canned Peas = 420
Evening Snack: Fresh Homemade Pumpkin Pie, Homemade whipped cream = 279

Total Calories: 1849
37% of the calories are from fat, 17% from protein, 46% from carbs

Yesterday was an oddish day. I had plans with friends in the evening and didn't get home to eat dinner until after 9:30. At that point I was starving and there wasn't anything quick-ish to make. I had some Mahi-Mahi I could have made, but the thought of cooking fish that late for dinner was not working for me. I ended up Microwaving a can of corn mixed with a can of peas. I was super hungry and ended up eating all of it. Not the best dinner, but until I learn my lesson and plan better this weirdness can happen. Normally I try to make a salad or something easy in advance that afternoon... but I was doing other stuff.

I was stuck at home dealing with Phone calls and work stuff for the first part of the day. So in between phone calls I killed a pumpkin. His name was Bob. I gained his trust and when he wasn't looking I grabbed a knife and murdered him with such delicious glee. Wheeee!! Then I roasted his little Pumpkin Body and removed his skin from his yummy flesh, mixed him with some Xylitol baking sweetener and the rest of the pie ingredients and baked him into a yummy pie. The first pie of the season!! A little early for it, but I am so ready for Autumn to be here. Halloween is my favorite time of year.

It was my first attempt to cook with Xylitol and I am very happy with the results. Tastes like a normal regular pie, maybe even a bit better.

I think next time I make a Pumpkin Pie I will bake it without the crust as a Custard. That is where most of the fat and calories are anyway and I don't think I even really care for the crust on a pumpkin pie anyway, except for the outside edge. Maybe I will bake some leaf shaped cookie/crust pieces and serve them with the pie. That way I could lower the calories of crust by making it more of a cookie instead of just flour and butter. Not that I make my own crust at this point anyway. Hmmm things to consider.

My Pumpkin Patch is really popping this year. I'll have plenty of opportunities to try out various recipe attempts. That and I'll have to give my friends lots of baked goods as Autumn progresses forward. *L*

Bunny, in all your weight numbers posted above, and your daily downs/ups, don't lose sight of the fact that overall your weight is down 26 lbs. from when you started! That's progress. Don't beat yourself up, or miss the forest for the trees!

Hi! Sorry I'm late to the party. I'm envious of your pumpkin patch. Can't have one living in an apartment, and they're not showing up in grocery stores around here yet, though my pumpkin cravings have started. I must used canned for now, alas.

Nice goals, and I agree with LancelotsLover--you've already made good progress. Congrats!

Ooh, I forgot that pumpkin season is on its way!!! That means pumpkin pie, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin lattes...my pumpkin protein oatmeal!!! Good stuff. My SIL uses Xylitol because her son has exceptionally sensitive teeth (as in, he eats a teeny bit of sugar, and he gets cavities), so I've had some of her cakes w/it, and I don't notice a difference in taste. I've done pumpkin pies as custards (no crust) and it still comes out excellent. In some ways, I prefer mine w/no crust because my baking skills aren't that great, and I usually burn the crust anyway.

I'm prolly going to see Halloween 2 next week, but I also wish filmmakers would be more original. There's a dearth of good horror movies in general.

I saw Let the Right One In a few months ago, and thought it was so great, but I actually don't consider it a horror movie like a lot of folks were touting it. It's much more subdued and poignant. When I view a horror flick, there better be plenty of screaming, lots of blood and flying body parts all over the screen.

Here you are.

Just subscribing so I can follow along. The only thing I would suggest is that perhaps every so often (some people do about 12 weeks) that you take a rest week. It doesn't mean that you have to do nothing (I used to plan major garden projects), but to give your body a chance to recuperate.

Thanks for the good advice. It's hard to remember that this life is a long one and there will be ups and downs. Just so long as I can keep things in balance and moving towards a permanently fit me in the long run I'll be okay. It's hard to remember that when I need to though. *sigh* I'll learn.

I lived in apartments for YEARS and it was sucky wanting a garden but being able to have one. The one I baked with actually came from the store. Mine aren't done growing just yet.

I could never wrap my head around canned, though I'm understanding that it has improved since I was a kid. That or my mother just could not make pumpkin pie to save her life. *L*

Good Luck with the canned stuff and I hope you see some real live pumpkins soon.

Pumpkin Protein Oatmeal? How do you work that one out? Is there a brand of protein powder that you like? I'm soooo new to all that sort of thing.

Tooth Care is the main reason my honey got interested in Xylitol. The only gum we chew is made with it rather than sugar or some chemical fake sweetener. Yeah the crust is gone on the next pie. SO gone.

I haven't seen that movie, I'll have to check it out when it's on dvd.

I like the old fashioned horror movies. Those Saw and Hostile movies are not for me. At. All. They freak me the hell out.
