Oh Stage 2, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, you dear frenemy.
Front squat / push press 2x8 50 lbs first set 45 second
Step ups 2x10 (25x2 db)
1 point dumbbell rows 2x10 (17.5x2 db)
Static lunges rear foot elevated (20x2 db)
Push ups 2x10
Planks 2x60 seconds
Woodchops 2x17.5
The front squats were awkward to say the least, but I did them. 8 each set (should have been 10). I should have gone lighter with the static lunges; I could feel the strain on my non-dominant knee toward the end of the second set. I loved the 1-pt rows because I could feel how much stronger my core is following stage 1. I stuck with straight push-ups rather than a harder variation because I had a hunch this workout would kick my ass. And I was right.
thanks for the welcome, nice to hear from other newbies, and especially funny to read your training log...definitely going to subscribe. Good luck with your workouts, keep up the great work and fantastic writting. Also Happy Belated Birthday to your kiddie!!!

My goodness, I did the same workout last night - front squats, db rows and all! Since I wanted to have fun w/my strength workouts this month, I figured I'd revisit routines that I enjoyed. But for some reason, the one-point db rows are really sucking for me this time around. Well, I know the reason - it's core strength, and unilateral work that I have to do as well.

I'm surprised your core isn't strong from your running? Or perhaps it is strong but not in the ways necessary for that move?

Late day at work: present to operating committee on my key project. Inevitable debrief with colleagues. Dash out of the office, go home, season today's crock pot creation, kiss husband children dogs hi cats.
Run. Out the door with dinner for dad. How are you feeling? You look better, gotta run. It's tie dye day at camp tomorrow.
Tshirts, ooh that's a cute sweater. Run. To the car, in the rain. Dinner. Mmm I like this soup. Chicken. Wash the shirts (and maybe just MAYBE avoid the contact dermatitis this time). Laundry. Dishes. Lunches. Pants, underwear, tank, new sweater, makeup, towel, water bottle. PACKED.
Bed.
Bed.
Bed.
Out the door in time to make it to the pool. Swipe in my card, Hi Tom! Pool. Workout partner is already warming up OH NOES! Swim. Swim. Swim. Swim.
Endorphins. Dress. Coffee. Work. 8 am meeting.
I like this new sweater.

500 warmup
3x200
2x150
50 easy
5x100
200 / 100 / 200 working in stroke

I've been thinking about this, and I dunno. On the one hand, I'm pretty good at planks, even though I dislike them, and do well w/crunches (though not at tonight's workout, hehehe), and my running form is top-notch. That's actually the one thing my coach commented on - she said she doesn't have to work with me on that, because I never really lean back, sag, or lean too forward.
But I still think my core needs to be addressed, plus balance issues, I'm sure. It's also been a while since I last did that move, so I'll probably be able to use heavier weights for that soon enough.
warning: shameless self-promoting success story to follow
I knew I shouldn't have bought the jeans.
It had been a long, awful winter. After packing on the grief pounds, I lost my favorite jeans this spring to too-fat thighs. Yeah, they ripped. Sure, they were old jeans, but I loved them.
I sized up significantly at the Lucky Brand store and paid bust-out retail for a flattering pair. My goal was to fit into them for as short a time as humanly possible.
I also trawled ebay, picking up a few pairs of smaller jeans as an aspiration. These are the jeans I've been wearing lately. And I got my ass back in the pool and back in the gym.
I've been using various items of clothing to track my progress for the past few months. In addition to goal clothes, this morning I decided to break out the Lucky jeans from the spring.
They slipped on with no problem. Buttoning them, I wondered exactly how baggy they might be. I pulled at the waist band and noticed I had significant room to play with, so I tried the ultimate these don't fit me any more test: without unbuttoning the pants, I pulled them over my hips and off of my body.
Cute, bust-out retail jeans. Yeah, I won't be wearing those again.
Next, on to the impossibly tiny cargo pants I want to be in by the fall...
Congrats on undergrowing clothes! One of the best feelings.

yay! All caught up on your log - the name of it makes me sing, everytime. Love to see someone else who bribes their kids to get a workout in. I am not alone!
Your workouts looks great.

Very nice work
I'm jealous! I've got a whole rack of clothes that I am patiently waiting to get into.
I'm picturing you standing with your arms folded, tapping your feet and staring at the clock meaningfully in front of this rack of clothes to encourage them to hurry up already.

Only eclipsed by the Smaller Size Victory Dance.

Thanks! I'm proud that I've never once had to use a chain of any kind, nor a closet with a lock, to get in a workout
wooooooo hooooooooo!!!! way to go on slipping into the smaller sizes!!! Yes, it is annoying pay that money for pants you can't wear now, but I bet its worth it!

Every morning when I have to get dressed for work. Especially on the days when it is getting near to needing the dry cleaning taken in.

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Tall, dark and handsome trainer at the gym, how much do I love thee? Let me count the ways. You're wonderful with my children (bonus points), and you were so kind to me today when you showed me the countless ways in which I was doing my deadlifts wrong, wrong all wrong. Plus you've got that tall dark and handsome thing going on, and you're the only trainer in the place who knows what he's talking about and doesn't have his clients doing stupid shit. Love.
I've got swimmer's slouch, I know. It's just so dang hard to get those shoulders back where they belong. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways without making me feel like a big idiot.
(I truly welcomed the advice... although I've lifted for a long time, I am new to the deadlift... previous programs included lots of Romanian deadlifts but no true deadlifts)
Wide grip deadlifts (first done wrong, wrong, all wrong) 2x10 80 lbs
BSS 2x10 (22.5x2 db) first set, (25x2 db) second set
Underhand grip lat pulldown 2x10 70 lbs
Reverse lunge from box w/ forward reach 2x10 (2x22.5 db)
DB prone cuban snatch 2x10 (2x10 db)
Ball crunch 2x10 bw
Reverse crunch 2x10 bw
Lateral flexion 2x10 bw
Prone cobra one 60 seconds
My right shoulder felt a little twingey on the bottom during the underhand grip lat pulldowns (it's my iffy swimming shoulder). I went light with the cuban snatches to try to get them right. I ran out of time towards the end, which meant rushing through the core work (I did each rep correctly but didn't rest as prescribed between sets). All in all, good effort on my first 2B workout and I'm prepared to rock it next time through.

I'm right there with you. I was on the smallest hole in my belt. This week while doing a lot of walking at work I had to stop into a store and buy a new belt. My slacks were falling off of me. It's a great feeling to be consistently getting smaller. But, I didn't budget enough money for new clothes!

I have yet to find one of these at my gym. 'Course, I just turned in my cancellation notice two days ago so it doesn't matter, but had there been such a trainer, I may've been more inclined to continue coughing up my $60/month to stay.

That extra day of rest did me right. It was an all-out no-balls (chicks only) to-the-wall workout this morning in the outside pool.
500 m w/u
25-50-100-150-100-50-25, sprinting on the 25s
5x100 mix half stroke half free
200 IM, 100 IM kick, 200 IM (with fins)
5x100 with first 50 SPRINT, stop at wall to check split, 50 easy
Warmdown
2500 m +
I haven't worked that hard / sprinted so fast in a looooooong time.
Is it too early for a mojito or 2? Yes?
Oh.
Nonetheless, it was a blast. It's rare to have an all-women workout in our group and I enjoyed the energy of it.
Here's something for everyone ungrowing their clothes... get a belt hole puncher. They are inexpensive and useful. I found one at JoAnne's. It allowed me to get a couple more months of use out of my belts before having to buy new ones.
I guess that wouldn't be helpful for you then. LOL!
I should have quoted chaddukes here:

hmmmm.....I can't remember the last time I wore a belt!
I've got a few I wear over jackets. It's a smart look. I tend not to wear them with pants, either. To each her own. And a great tip nonetheless, Snarlia!

What the pool giveth, the pool taketh away.
As phenomenal as yesterday's workout was, today's was meh. I can do two moderate days in a row, but I can't swim hard one day and swim with any kind of speed the following day. Lesson learned for this point in my fitness quest, and here's to when I've got a strong enough swimming base for it to no longer be an issue.
750 m warmup
6x75 drill first 50 / swim final 25
5x100, 1-3-5 free 2-4 IM <-- this must be one of the sets they do in hades
6x50 free on an easy interval
200 kick with flippers (100 free / 100 fly)
50 cool down
...and I couldn't get out of that pool fast enough.
I have Sirius and ended up listening to a station the other day that was playing ALL kinds of old school, LOL and I heard your song!
I need a tall, dark, handsome smart trainer at my gym, too. Can you send yours my way?
Love reading your swim workouts. Swimming is something I wish I were good at and should probably do a little more often.

I JUST learned to swim last year! So, your workouts make me tired......see, I "graduated" by swimming the length of the pool 3x!! And, that about killed me. There's this whole breathing thing I have problems with.

I love it. Such great memories of the old days.

I have two solutions for you... either grow gills , or practice, practice, practice.
I am impressed that you learned how to swim as a grown-up. Good for you! I bet that made you feel great. It's a tremendous accomplishment.
