Had a busy day at work, and when I got home, I felt a bit mentally tapped-out. As much as I wanted to nap, I got myself together, drank a bit of iced coffee to perk me up, and then at around 7 PM headed out for my 3-mile run. I sweated like a pig out there, and I was shocked that I didn't have to keep giving myself a pep talk while I ran, like I normally do. I just got it done. And I didn't feel anything beyond slight discomfort, either. It felt great stepping back inside my home once that was over, and knowing that my endurance isn't so bad, either.

My cat has been an absolute godsend while DH has been away. Even though he's not always affectionate or cuddly, he has been there when I need to just mope, or wallow in self-pity. I don't like to verbally express my feelings, and with Pumpkin, I don't have to. I can just be.

(Oh, um, hi Joyce!)
Hope those stings aren't giving you a hassle, still. And hello, LOL.

I hope the MRI can be rescheduled SOON! I was so pissed off by that yesterday, and actually felt like chewing my keyboard (that wouldn't have been so good). But it is what it is.
And I'll have to make some of that baked salmon and potato salad again. It was excellent.
Hi there! Thanks for stopping by my log. Your running looks great!
I am so amazed and in awe of people like you who have family in Iraq. I can't imagine the strength you must have...hope everything is going well for your husband and his time away goes by fast for you.
Exercise
NROLFW workout (Kinda, sorta - I totally blanked out on most of the exercises here, except for the deadlift and Bulgarian Split Squat. I forgot to bring my trusty workout sheets w/me today, darnit!!! So I did what I could recall, to my best knowledge.)
2 sets x 8 reps (except for prone cobra and assisted dips) -Deadlifts, 85 lbs.
-BSS, 12 lbs. medicine ball, then 25-lb weight plate (yah!)
-Wide-grip lat pulldown, 75 lbs., 60 lbs.
-Prone Cuban snatch, 8 lbs., 10 lbs.
-Swiss ball crunch
-Hip side flexion
-Prone cobra, 1 @ 90 secs.
-Assisted dips, 6x36 lb.
I threw in the assisted dips to test out the gravitron, and found that I don't like it, for some reason. I think I'll get a resistance band, and use it when I go to the park, instead.
I know that I'm starting to feel better, energy-wise. Stuff like Bulgarian Split Squats, which made me feel nauseous at the beginning of the month, don't make me ill any more. That means this increased calorie intake to maintenance levels is working its magic.
Had to keep reminding myself that I shouldn't throw max effort into tonight's workout. That will be saved for tomorrow's 5K that I entered on the spur of the moment (and on the coach's encouraging). I signed up for the Dreher Park Dash, which will take care of tonight's normally-scheduled speedwork. It helps that at the end of the race, one of the local eateries will dish out buffalo wings to the participants, hehehehe. I know that dinner will be taken care of.

The green all around in the photo is what surprised me. It never looks that verdant when I go to that park, for some reason. Maybe my friend's camera is just that good.

Thanks, but I feel so sheepish sometimes when I hear stuff like that, because it's my dh who's there, not me. I'm just holding down the fort while he and the other service members do the work.
Good luck with tomorrow's race! And have fun. Probably not many hills in Florida, but the one piece of advice I can give you is, if you have any hills in the race, don't do squats or lunges the day before!

Thanks for the tip. Thank goodness, yes, that the terrain in my part of FL is very, very flat. So even though I did split squats last night, I should be fine... I hope!
Time: 28:11
Officially a PR, but kinda not - I ran a 5K equivalent at the end of June where I was timed at 27:48. However, I say this is an "official" one anyway because it's the fastest 5K race that I've ran thus far.
One of my friends managed to snap this of me, just a few hundred yards away from the finish line. I'm shocked that I don't look like I'm gonna puke. That's how I was feeling tonight. I vaguely look relaxed, even though my heart rate was a gazillion miles a minute and I wanted to pass out on the pavement from the humidity.
And you know how there's always that one person who stands out from the pack? Wouldn't ya know it, here he is:
I wonder where he got his top from. It's loud, very Floridian.
Overall, this race wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst, either. It was a bit slow-going at the start - I was behind a lot of people, and should've moved further up front - and I never really got into a comfortable running groove, either. It was pure huffing and puffing the entire time. Felt like agony towards the end, too. I shoulda figured it was going to be tough when I broke into a good sweat walking before the start, ha!
Post race was a blast. I ate tons of hot wings, and hung around with a bunch of interesting folks from the local running clubs. I also met a guy who's been running for 65 years. He's a retired doctor, and is almost 80 years old. I wanna be like him when I'm 80 - still running races, and feeling and looking good.
Nutrition Report
Cals: 1,600 kcal - most of hot wings-based
Carbs: 151 g
Fat: 66 g
Protein: 114 g
Calories can be upped tonight, but I won't bother. I'm too stuffed at this point, and what I'd really like is a cup of hot tea.
Great race and you look great! The heat and humidity must be killer. I can't imagine! We have been so spoiled this summer with a really cool July here.
Awesome race, Joyce! As others have said, you look great! Kudos to you for running in that Florida humidity. I'm sure that would make me puke.

There's a guy at my gym who wears stuff like that - although, honestly, he'd put a tie-dye tshirt UNDER that tank with clashing shorts (sometimes Hawaiian flower-print shorts)... it's scary!
That is a great picture. You really do look like it was easy --- even if it wasn't one of those easy days.
Congrats!!!!
Thank you! Even if I didn't feel strong, I can sure pretend to look so, LOL.

I must say, wherever you train, there will be a disadvantage. In the case of the American south/southwest, it's the intense heat and humidity. Up north, it's the hills, and unpredictable weather. Ever since Wendy said that she looks at running in the heat as a form of speedwork, my outlook towards training has vastly improved.

One of my running club cohorts was telling me last night that one lesson she learned from doing evening races is to not eat dinner beforehand. She did that once, and midway through a 5K, tossed her cookies.

And to think there's someone who's a louder dresser than the guy at last night's race! I liked that dude, though. There was another guy there who was dressed in endurance athlete gear - had the sponsor shirt, hydrating pack, hat and all... But the thing is, it was only a 5K. In some ways, THAT was weirder than the man with the predilection for orange socks, LOL.
Good job toughing it out! The next one will be easier. I really hate exercising when it is humid and hot. My heartrate seems to take forever to come back down in those conditions. But I guess in Florida you get used to it.

Exercise
NROLFW Workout
2x10, except for front squat/push press (did 8 reps) -FS/PP, 55 lbs.
-Step-ups, 10 lb. dbs; 15 lb. dbs
-DB 1-pt rows, 10 lb. dbs.; 12 lb. db
-Lunges (didn't do static, elevated ones), 15 lb dbs
-Push-ups (feet elevated on bench)
-Cable horizontal woodchops, 20 lbs.
Also, a 2 mile walk/run on treadmill, 2% incline
No idea about pace because I messed w/times and settings, but it took me appx. 25 minutes to complete it. Walked away from the gym totally drenched in sweat, but feeling strong, and drank Muscle Milk and ate cherries as my post-workout meal. Since I went to Publix immediately afterward, I was also hoping their food-sample kiosk would be open, and I'd get additional goodies. No such luck yesterday, though.
Saturday, 8/08
Rest day, though I did play soccer for 15 minutes today at the picnic I was at. Then I had to duck back into the covered pavilion because I couldn't take the heat.
-------
I've been up since 6:30 AM today to go to work. Our office organized an end-of-summer picnic for the families of our clients, and I just felt very slow and out of it for most of the event. It didn't help that I was constantly thirsty, but kept on eating the cheddar potato chips that were on hand instead.
And I gotta get back to doing long runs on Sunday mornings. My plan is to do 7 miles, chow down on breakfast, and then plotz on the couch for the rest of the day.

Thank you! I also got the results from AccuChip Timing, and I came in 8 out of 25 people in my age group. Woot!

I still haven't gotten used to the heat, and prolly never will. And it's really shocking to see how fast your heart rate goes up in hot conditions. There's an article in last month's Runners World that discusses heat and its impact on training, and it's a huge obstacle even for seasoned runners.

Not that I have strong (or any, actually) goals of becoming a runner, but that seems reason enough for me to stay somewhat north, particularly in summer.

Wow! Great pictures and great race. I love the "guy who stands out". To me he stood out for a much different reason. I would guess him to be at least 65 years old. I just was thinking.... WTG ol' guy. Looks like he is running strong too. I am always inspired by these sorts of people. (just like the 80 year old retired Doctor)
High five to all the things you are accomplishing Joyce!

I like to do this when I swim longer distances in weekend workouts. Give me a couch and an unsullied copy of the NYTimes, and I'm good for the rest of the day
Exercise -Outdoor run, 1:17:02. No concrete idea about pace or mileage because I got lost for about 10 minutes on the trail I was at. I presume I did appx. 7 miles, though. My slow pace is usually 11 m/m.
Well, I didn't get up at 5 AM this morning to do an early long run. I decided that sleeping in was more important. But I was out of the house by 9 AM, picked up a few energy gels at the running store, and drank fresh apple and beet juice to help prep myself for this afternoon's running session.
The caffeinated energy gel that I ate also made a difference. While the run overall was very demanding, I didn't feel like plotzing in the middle of the park I was at. I actually felt quite focused and assured the whole time. Too bad that doesn't translate into a good sense of direction. *throws arms up in the air.*
Nutrition report to follow later. I've been focusing on the carbs the last 2 days, and it's paid off in more energy. Tomorrow I'm contemplating doing an abbreviated strength workout, so I'll also adjust calorie intake accordingly.

I loved seeing the "more seasoned" runners at the race last Thursday, because it goes to show you that age is not a real limitation on physical accomplishment. And the high five is very much appreciated!

In this instance, it'll go way into the evening, LOL. I'm quite good at vegging out on the sofa with my papers and magazines. That's my plan for tonight!
Hey, Leigh Peele is always talking about the importance of rest and proper sleep!
Sounds like you had a good Sunday.

Your workouts and running are very inspiring! I'm looking forward to being able to run again at some point. Until, I'll happily follow along in your log and enjoy your training
Exercise
Playtime with kettlebells! All 3x10 sets, except where indicated. -5 minute warmup -Squats, 12 kg -Cleans, 12 kg; last set 8 kg -Jerks, 12 kg; last set 8 kg -Snatches, 1 set x 10 reps, 12 kg -Stability ball pass -Side planks, 3 reps each side, 45 secs.
Phew, glad that's over. Tom, are you happy that I remembered to do KB cleans, jerks and snatches? Side planks felt like AGONY tonight. What's worse than a plank? A side one, of course. My kettlebell cleans continue to improve, but what really shocked me was my progress w/snatches. I'm starting to get the hang of these.

Ha, that's funny, because allow me to bore you with nutrition #'s from the last 3 days, including today.
Very annoying to see, that at least on my screen, the font size of most of the entries on this page has been reduced. Whatever.

Sleep is something I don't feel I get enough of. Sad to say this, but one of the best dreams I've ever had was one where I dreamed I got a really great night's sleep. Oy.

That's good to hear, because I've been getting in touch with that pukey feeling on my running sessions a lot recently.
I'll try to get to bed early tonight as well. Gotta unwind for tomorrow, where there will be another long work-related meeting, ugh.
I feel your pain. I am meeting'd out from last week.

Yeah, I see this too. Actually increased my screen size because I thought I'd mistakenly hit something to shrink things.
