I hope you get feeling better --- it sucks when your body and the universe conspire against your workouts. (smile)

Um, that's actually already happened. I just can't bring myself to shoo away my cat, even if it does mean having to delay my workout, or choosing another pair of pants. It just seems... wrong!

That reminds me, I saw this on the interwebs a few weeks ago - my cat has yet to use it for food, but he employs pitiful meowing to masterful effect when he wants attention. *sigh* He can be such a primo don, but dh and I indulge in his whims, of course.

I saw that article as well a while back. Gus has a big loud meow that is hard to ignore, but Shadow does really sound like he's crying at times. Tonight it was because I made them come inside. He sat by the back door and cried. Didn't work, but I did feel bad. Then he went and chased his big brother around for a while (Gus actually jumped up on the couch with my mother so she'd protect him from his little brother).

Oh, I forgot to tell you about my mom's cat. She has it trained to do tricks. If she says get your bird, it gets in her makeup bag and gets a cotton ball. If she tell him to shake hands he smells her other hand and if she has a treat in it he will shake. The same thing with roll over. She is going to train him to jump through a hoop next. He is such a show off --- loves all the attention.

Hey! Hope you're 100% now! When's your goal race? I think I've decided to train for a May or June 1/2 next year. That's also dependent on the kind of training I can get in when we have a kid........But I can still live vicariously through your workouts!

Today's workout was a 4 miler on the treadmill. It sucked monkey butt. First of all, I hate treadmills. They can be a great conditioning tool, convenient, etc., but I always feel like I'm on a road to nowhere on them. But I decided to take advantage of it since it's easier to go at a harder pace as opposed to in the heat. Besides, I hadn't stepped on a treadmill since last November, and a few minutes into my workout, I remembered why I didn't miss them.

One of the reasons why it felt terrible was because whenever I tried running a 8:45/mile pace, my right ear would just act up on me, and it felt like my head was clogging up and things would "woosh"... I don't know how else to describe it, but it's a really awkward feeling. I know part of it is because all that blood is circulating a lot more rapidly throughout my body, but this ear issue has to be resolved. I made an appointment with an ear/nose/throat specialist for tomorrow because I'm sick of being sick.

On the bright side, however, I put in today's food intake into SparkPeople's nutrition analyzer, and the numbers came out really good (i.e., protein intake rocked). And they are:

Total Cals
1,497
Fat
47
Carbs
142
Protein
156

I can definitely add extra calories later on tonight - my recommended daily calories for maintenance is a little over 2,000. I won't be able to meet that number since I'm really full, but I can have blueberry kefir and not worry about it.

Anne - Your furkids sound so adorable. It's hard for me to listen to that pitiful "meow" from kitties - I've always adored cats, and as much as I'm fond of animals, I'm a crazy cat-lady at the core.

Peaches - Your mom's cat is exceptional! I've read in articles you can also train cats to do tricks on command, but I've never actually heard of it occurring in real life, LOL.

Naive - My HM is scheduled for Dec. 6 - the Marathon & Half-Marathon of the Palm Beaches. It is going to be so awesome! Florida weather in December is glorious, the course is flat, and the first couple of miles go through Flagler Drive and along the Intracoastal Waterway, which are quite pretty.

Default hello

You were the first to be nice enough to comment in my blog and I wanted to come by and say hello too

I just noticed that you are living in Palm Beach, right? I was born in Ft. Myers myself and lived there until about 9 years old.

I do miss the pretty weather in the winter, but not the lovebugs!

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah I just moved to west florida in December. South Florida is much better, lol My bf is from miami, and my friend's mom lives in Boyton Beach which I think is close to you.

Good luck with your hubby in Iraq, all I can say is the time looking forward always seems so much longer than it does looking back. I grew up next to a marine corp base and a lot of my friends, my brother, and my bf have been over there. You can do it!

Also good luck with your training, are you doing a half or a full? thats a pretty serious goal. Hope your doc visit goes well and you get your ear thing figured out.

7/22/09

Workout

Circuit: Hill sprint to top, 10 pushups, jog to bottom of hill, 20 crunches
Completed 10 of these.
-----
As usual, my energy levels were all over the place today. I didn't get any sleep last night, and while I woke up feeling OK this morning, and was quite productive in the first part of the day, my visit to the ear/nose/throat doctor was a turning point. From then on, I was terribly sleepy.

Speaking of the visit to the ENT specialist, it turns out there's no infection, no blockage, either, but I have lost some hearing in my right ear. I'll have to schedule an MRI to check out the situation, and I got a new prescription for methyprednisone. It turns out that one of the side effects is fatigue. I've been taking it for almost a week, so this tiredness isn't all in my head.

This ongoing tiredness really sucks. I'm actually in a "fuck-it-all" mood right now and want to ditch my workouts and eating. But I'll keep plugging away because I'm too stubborn to do so.
----

Peaches - Funny you mention the move from Florida to Texas, because I did the reverse in December, LOL.

Default that stinks

sorry that your 'get up and go has got up and left'

I have been in a stinky mood today too. I had a friend that called me last night and begged me to meet her at Cracker Barrel this morning at 10am (30 mins from me) even though I told her I wouldn't be eating there. She said she was just going through some 'rough stuff' and needed someone to talk to.

Sooo, after not getting in bed until 5am, I drug myself up at 9 am and drove 30 mins to meet her . . and then she stood me up!!! I was so annoyed.

Then she called me at about 7pm to say that she had just been so tired that she overslept her alarm clock, and decided to sleep in. UGH!!!

Needless to say, coming home and getting in the mood to go lift heavy things was not an easy task.

At least you have an actual reason for your crummy mood! Knowledge is power!!!!

Stubborn women are HOTT!!!!

I made a quick stop to Dunkin' Donuts this morning to get an egg sandwich and an iced coffee. Someone, please remind me that I actually don't like egg sandwiches from DD, but I was so hungry and not thinking straight. Bummer I don't work near a decent deli. The ones that were by my job in New York were ace at frying up nice egg & ham sammiches.

I found out that I'm chaperoning a work-related field trip to Universal Studios tomorrow. It's me, 6 staffers, and 40 kids. Fortunately, they're teenagers, who I have an easier time dealing with. There will be no workout, for sure. I have to leave at 7 AM, and will probably get back home at 11 PM. Should I count this as a rest day? Thoughts?

Most of the time, it's pretty fun. I mean, I just mentioned that me and my work colleagues are going to Orlando for work stuff, LOL. Florida seems like a big playground at times, but the downside is I'm so cynical, I think it's almost too good to be true.

Oh, the knee pain!! I actually had to wrap my right knee up this morning. Those hill sprints can be killers. But I've been going crazy with lower-body work the last few days: Sunday was squat jumps and lunges, Monday was more squats, Tuesday I ran 4 miles, and last night I forgot to mention that we did plyo + the hill sprints circuit... So that meant more squat jumps, and duck walks (walking across a field in an ATG squat position). I'm surprised my glutes, hams and quads don't feel completely maxed-out. I'm thinking it's because I'm too distracted by other things right now.

Wow, nice work on the circuits!

Sorry the ear stuff still isn't resolved. Hope the MRI turns out okay, and yes, at least now you know why you've been feeling so fatigued!

Been a while since I've been to Universal, but my guess is you'll be on your feet and walking a lot. While it might not be much vigorous activity, it could still very well be long enough that it's not really a rest day. That's one thing the GWF has emphasized to me--lots of moderate activity nearly always trumps short vigorous activity in terms of caloric burn and fuel requirements.

I hope the MRI can uncover a reason for why this is happening. The hearing loss doesn't faze me, but the constant ringing in my right ear does. Very annoying.

Good points that you raised there, too. It may be an active day (who knows what the teens we're corralling will do once we're there), and besides, it's going to feel hotter since we'll constantly be exposed to the sun. I can't wait to snarf some junk food while I'm there, either. Even if it's pricey.

I got home 2 hours ago and am totally burnt like toast. I wish I could write more, but I'm completely spent and I think not taking my prednisone today as prescribed really made me feel out of sorts. I'll have to call a pharmacist tomorrow for the redosing instructions.

Tomorrow I'll write a more comprehensive account, but til then....

I don't know if South FL is nicer, but it's sure a lot more hoppin'. Boynton Beach is indeed pretty close to me. I always pass by it on my way to work (my office is in neighboring Delray)

And I'm training for a half-marathon. My HM will be the Palm Beaches one in December - so excited about it.

I analyzed my food intake from the last 2 days, and all I'm saying is that I better have the energy tomorrow for weights at the gym. I've consumed a good amount of calories, but even more copious amounts of fat. Will post the numbers later, too.

Ringing ears? You aren't going to pull a Vincent van Gogh on us. The guy suffered terribly from tinnitus (ringing ears) and this is probably why he cut his ear off when having imbibed in too much absynth. Or so they say..

Universal Studios trip recap
It was a long day, which started for me at 5:45 AM, and wrapped up somewhere around midnight. The first (and only - but MAJOR) misstep that I made was forgetting to bring the prednisone prescription with me. Bad move, because even though I missed only a day's worth of dosages, it was enough to make me feel discombobulated. I felt dizzy at times, and going on rides like the Mummy's Revenge prolly didn't help matters.

But I'll stop complaining there. The group of kids that I had ranged in age from 13-18, and they were fabulous. They actually listened to me, gave me no hassles, and were even game enough to join me on the Mummy ride (which I think is now the best thing at Universal, especially since Back to the Future is gone ). However, one of the girls said afterward that the Mummy was one of the worst rides she's ever been on. Whatever - everyone else went back for a second spin, LOL.

I made sure to keep myself hydrated enough throughout the day, and ate, ate and ate because that also kept whatever energy I had left up for the trip. And speaking of food, I'll add that in comparing a certain neighboring amusement area (really, Disney and its accompanying parks) to Universal, Disney has its food act more together, in both healthy and junky offerings. The eats Universal hawks tastes mediocre at best. I think Disney may also have better quality beer on tap (not that I had any on this particular trip, obviously!!).

Once I got home at 9:30 PM, I flopped on the couch, then putzed on the internets. I finally made it to bed at midnight, and slept like a log until 10:30 the following morning.

Yesterday & Today, 7/25 + 7/26
The extra sleep and calories definitely made me feel lots better on Saturday. I got back on the prednisone, and relaxed for a bit at the homestead. In the afternoon, I made it to the gym for my workout, and replicated the routine that I'd struggled through over a week ago. Very happy to say that yesterday went a lot more smoothly. Deadlifts @ 75 lbs., and close-grip lat-pulldowns @ 60 lbs. were a breeze.

Then in the evening, I went to a Peruvian Independence Day celebration in Lantana (my family's from Peru, so this was personally important for me to attend). The food was terrific - there was plenty of potatoes done up with cheese sauce (huancaina) and chicken stuffing (causa), and I felt properly fortified.

But the dance performances were the real highlights of the evening. I wish I'd taken my camera with me, because most of the dancers were incredible. They did various regional styles, such as the Pandilla Punena, and my favorite, the Marinera Nortena. The latter is the national dance of Peru, and depicts the courtship ritual. I was able to find a good performance clip here. While it's not the one I saw last night, you can see in the YouTube clip that it's pretty intricate and requires restrained emotion on display, but you can sense the drama nonetheless. And I can now see why a lot of women say that fancy footwork is what seals the deal in choosing their mates, LOL. It is certainly a special talent.

Today's been a busy day, too, though not as fun. After Mass, I went to the bookstore and walked away with copies of FitnessRx and an Oxygen collector's issue of Abs. Even though I'm not in the mood to do any fat-loss right now. Then I tackled cleaning the bathroom from top to bottom, and attempted to finish eating the batch of ratatouille I'd made a few weeks ago.

Still have lots more to do: gotta make my egg frittata breakfasts for the week, and another batch of protein pancakes. I'm hoping I can get a day off on Tuesday, because then I can really tackle other home-related stuff with more gusto as well.

Sounds like a good, albeit busy, Friday through today! Since you didn't mention any more ear-ringing I'll hope that's starting to clear up...

I definitely won't be having any absinthe any time soon then, LOL. Don't worry, van Gogh was in his own league. I deal w/my health issues and personal angst through very different methods.

No such luck there. The ringing has been a steady presence since the beginning of July, and will be there til... whenever it decides to go away.

7/27/09 Recap
Exercise
Ran 5.11 miles on treadmill @ 1.0 incline
Avg. Pace: 10:26/mile

I was very pleased w/tonight's running session. Last week's treadmill date was horrible - I mean, I had to pause and do walking breaks. But this time around, I was alternating btw. 8:57/mile, 9:20, and 11:20 with little difficulty. While my heart rate was up, up, up, it wasn't the back-breaking experience of the previous time. Jeez, what a difference 1.) cutting back on meds and 2.) increasing food intake make. :P

Tonight also reminded me of something my dh said a few weeks ago in reference to his running workouts. You can head out, feel all good and golden... and then your run is a total wash. Other times, you feel like crap but your running falls into place, and occasionally, you even set a PR. While I didn't accomplish that earlier, today was definitely the latter. However, I also kinda suspected that the protein and fat-rich meals I consumed would propel me through the workout regardless.

It's going, though it's been pretty difficult w/my ear issue. Funny how one thing spills over to everything else and makes it more challenging. However, I'm not as worried as before, because as long as I can run a sub-9 min/mile pace for 10 minutes, I'm OK. I know I'm getting there again.

Yay for getting there again!

Have you had your MRI yet? Maybe your ear ringing is from a sinus infection or something like that. Back in eighth grade I kept getting so many headaches my doc eventually ordered an MRI. No tumors or anything (and I now suspect the headaches were due to a poor diet consisting of lots of junky carbs) but it did turn up a sinus infection I hadn't realized I had.

Exercise
-60 minutes bellydance class (Quite fun! Too bad I'm taking a break from bellydance for now. I'll have to sign up for a new set of classes, and the instructor teaches at another center that's MUCH closer to my house than the one I've been going to the last few months).
-8 kg kettlebell cleans (didn't keep track of reps and sets - was focused on practicing form here)
-8 kg kettlebell TGU's (same as above)

Haven't tracked food, though I know protein will be low for the day. My appetite was minimal for the first half, and matched my (lack of) activity then. I had a day off from work, and spent most of the morning vegging on the sofa, and drinking coffee... Mental breaks are awesome.

Amanda - No such luck w/scheduling the MRI yet. Thanks for the tip on the sinus infection possibility. I hope it is something mundane such as that that's causing the ringing.

Exercise - Running coach's session
  • 10 minute warmup run
  • 5x tempo intervals - 5 minute hard pace/1 minute rest
  • Plyo circuit - 2x's ea - power skips; bounds; butt kicks; high-knee runs; duck walks; squat jumps; one-legged hops
  • 2x10 pushups
  • 2 planks, 60 seconds each
  • Some ungodly core move, where we sat, but lifted our legs off the ground, then rapidly swung our arms side to side 40x's. (This exercise also cracked me up, however, because one of the runners commented that our coach must be watching P90X too intently while we were pounding out reps, LOL).
Thank heavens tonight's temps were cool, and the sky was overcast!!! It worked in our favor, because most of the runners were FLYING through the tempo intervals, myself included. When Wendy mentioned in her log that she counts running in the intense heat as speedwork, she wasn't kidding. I was doing an 8:30/mile pace at times, and finished off strong. I even had enough energy in me left to do the plyo stuff, which usually kicks my ass into many different directions.

I don't think I'll be able to fall asleep quickly tonight, because I'm still eating dinner. I figured I'd treat myself to my current fave meal: spicy peanut Thai noodles w/chicken and Swiss chard. I also had my post-workout protein drink, so I know I'll be in OK shape come tomorrow.

The mood tonight at the session was a lot lighter than it has been the last few weeks. I think the lack of heat gave everyone extra energy, and a lot more enthusiasm to just head out there at full speed...

And I'm just thankful I didn't have to rely on wretched Gatorade to get me through the meet, LOL. Blech!

LOL. I have the P90X core dvd, and I know exactly what the other runner meant!

Good workout Joyce!
