Ah.. maintenance is a good place to be.. good time to recoup & get better when sick or when not, just to improve on your lifts (gym) or time (cycling/running/rowing etc.)
Well, I'm not 100% sure on how harmful peroxide in a very diluted solution is but it's pretty noxious stuff at higher doses and it'd be the last thing I'd want to place on such a sensitive piece of skin as your inner ear.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_peroxide
Diluted H2O2 (between 3% and 12%) is used to bleach human hair when mixed with ammonia, hence the phrase "peroxide blonde". It is absorbed by skin upon contact and creates a local skin capillaryembolism which appears as a temporary whitening of the skin. It is used to whiten bones that are to be put on display. The strength of a solution may be described as a percentage or volume, where 1% hydrogen peroxide releases 3.3 volumes of oxygen during decomposition. Thus, a 3% solution is equivalent to 10 volume and a 6% solution to 20 volume, etc.
3% H2O2 is used medically for cleaning wounds, removing dead tissue, and as an oral debriding agent. Peroxide stops slow (small vessel) wound bleeding/oozing, as well. Most over-the-counter peroxide solutions are not suitable for ingestion.
3% H2O2 is effective at treating fresh (red) blood-stains in clothing and on other items. It must be applied to clothing before blood stains can be accidentally "set" with heated water. Cold water and soap are then used to remove the peroxide treated blood.
Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizer effective in controlling sulfide and organic related odors in wastewater collection and treatment systems. It is typically applied to a wastewater system where there is a retention time of 30 minutes to 5 hours before hydrogen sulfide is released. Hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the hydrogen sulfide and promotes bio-oxidation of organic odors. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes to oxygen and water, adding dissolved oxygen to the system thereby negating some Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).
If a dog has swallowed a harmful substance (e.g. rat poison, chocolate), small amounts of hydrogen peroxide can be given to induce vomiting. [27]
Homemade choc chip cookies are almost always worth it.
Hang in there, Joyce!

I'm just getting over a cold and indulged rather heavily in carbs the past few days. I felt blah and my workouts suffered and all I wanted to do yesterday was sleep despite having about 9 hours sleep the night before!
No real update for today, except that I just found out that I don't have to schlep down to Miami for a work meeting... It was scrapped, but I never got a phone call telling me about the cancellation. Good thing I got the news in time, before I decided to head out.
I'm feeling a bit more energetic today, though I'm not sure if it's because the meds are finally taking effect or if it's just my willpower kicking in... My right ear hasn't changed, and will very likely have to see the doctor again on Friday.
Today's Recap, 7/13/09
Exercise - 2x10 each
Deadlifts
Lat Pulldowns
Cuban snatch
Swiss ball crunch
Reverse crunch
Side flexion
Playing it safe on all exercise for the moment, because I don't want to overexert myself when I'm feeling "meh." The weight on deadlifts and lat pulldowns were wimpy (65 lbs. and 50 lbs., respectively), but that's all I can muster in my current state.
I've decided that if I do cardio tomorrow, it's gonna be a walk. I can't even handle the rowing machine right now (on Friday night, I lasted all of 5 minutes on it). No running madness for me until Wednesday's session with the coach.
Food
M1: 2 egg cups (size of muffins); 2 slices honey ham; 2 small protein pancakes; coffee
M2: South Beach peanut butter protein bar
M3: 1 cup lentils w/cumin & tomatoes; 1/2 cup brown rice
M4: Nectarine; 1 tbsp garlic hummus; 1 cracker
M5: Protein shake
M6: 1 tandoori chicken thigh; 1/2 cup veggies; 1/2 cup brown rice; 2 small pcs. milk chocolate w/hazelnut; 1/2 cup cherry kefir
I'm going to do some cleaning up in the kitchen, then call it a night.

Maintenance sounds good for you right now.
Whenever I'm sick, all I want to do is snarf a loaf a bread, covered in peanut butter. Though I will also accept cake, waffles, pancakes, and bagels, LOL. I guess those are my comfort foods when I'm all sniffly.
I think that's kind of typical when you're not feeling well. You basically want to indulge yourself. Although a little of that isn't such a bad thing. It's definitely harder to recover if you're not eating enough. Hope the ear doesn't keep you down for too long.
Exercise/Activity
No formal workout today. Ok... so I did do 2x20 KB swings with my 26-lb. kettlebell, and a few divebomber pushups (maybe 10? But they weren't w/good form).
Played fetch with my cat for 5 minutes. That should count toward something.
Whenever I take a break from workouts, I work on moves that have left me perplexed for the longest, or stuff that is very new to me. So today, I decided to tackle divebomber pushups. I discovered that I actually enjoy them, even though they are very challenging. I definitely feel that more of my body is engaged, especially the abs and the lower back, when I'm doing these. But my form still needs plenty of work.
Eats
M1: 4 small protein pancakes w/maple syrup; 2 egg cups; 2 slices ham; 1 tbsp hummus; coffee
M2: South Beach peanut butter protein bar
M3: 1/2 cup spaghetti; 1/2 chicken breast; 1 cup mixed veggies; 2 tbsp peanut sauce
M4: 1 cup frozen blueberries; 1 scoop protein powder; 1 cup almond milk
M5: 1/4 cup soy crumbles; 1 cup spaghetti squash; 1/2 cup lentils w/brown rice; 1 small wedge Laughing Cow cheese
M6: Probably some cherry kefir
I didn't feel hungry, and especially during lunchtime, which is usually when I'm at my most ravenous. Needless to say, I think I was preoccupied with other things, and couldn't finish my lunch.
What I really wanted to have today was a New York-style pizza, and you'd think that since I'm currently in the land of former New Yorkers, I could easily find a pizzeria that dishes it up. No such luck, though, at least where I'm at.
Dinner was abysmal. I experimented with veggie soy crumbles, and tried eating them with my spaghetti squash. Ugh, those things are ghastly. I seasoned them with oregano and it wasn't enough to cover their ickiness. I think I'll have to decimate these crumbles in a Mexican-style manner - lots of jalapenos and salsa.
I've been using TVP (think dehydrated veggie crumbles) with beef and it works quite well. I always found that the longer you cooked it (with seasonings) it tended to taste better.
It's been a while since I've eaten dehydrated veggies, but I remember I didn't like them. At all. Even with the chipotle-style seasonings they came dusted in, they tasted bland. I think I probably also just like my vegetables nondessicated. I seem to recall feeling really thirsty after eating them.
Neat plan to try new/challenging exercises after a break! Luckily, OPT already has me doing that.

Exercise
-Fartlek training session: 10 minute warm-up run @ tempo pace; 1 minute hard-running/2 minutes light jog or walk. Did 7 rounds total.
-12 diamond pushups (last 3 reps reeeeaaaallllly slow)
-10 standard pushups (ditto)
-10 wide-legged pushups (*sigh* Why do people like doing slow pushups??! And on the last few reps? This wasn't even the coach's idea - it was the local running club president who came up with this.)
-25 ab crunches
-25 side crunches
-Leg flutters - large, medium, small kicks - 20/20/30
-Plank progression series (front, sides, back), 12 secs. each hold
Eats
M1: 2 egg cups; 4 small protein pancakes; coffee
M2: Grande Americano (Starbucks visit!); pomegranate protein smoothie
M3: South Beach protein bar; leftover chicken w/peanut noodles
M4: 3 slices honey ham; 2 slices Ezekiel bread; 1 tbsp hummus; 1 small pc. of colby cheese
M5: Blueberry protein smoothie
M6: Chicken w/peanut noodles; 3/4 cup veggies
I'm so relieved whenever the coach says we're doing intervals. I notice that a lot of the folks who turn up dread those words, but I love them. That means, at most, only 90 seconds of pain, and then 2 minutes of recovery. I'm so glad I discovered HIIT before all this - it really prepped me for this type of workout.
The coach was distracted this evening. A high school cross-country runner (they train with us during the summer) was thought to have gotten lost in the park. So the coach was busy looping around the perimeter of the park the whole session, and got worked up to a near-panic. Then, he turned up at the starting point - he wasn't lost, he just went in the opposite direction of everyone else. He didn't even realize he'd caused a tizzy.
I think all in all, we all did solid work. It was 90F when we began, 86% humidity, and I'm still shocked that despite these conditions, I'm making steady pace and form improvements.

Hi Joyce! The deadlift weight doesn't seem that wimpy to me, but maybe there are different types of deadlifts? I do a stiff-legged deadlift with 60 sometimes and that seems pretty heavy for 10 reps. I need to buy the NROLFW book so I can talk the talk.
We are cat people also, with six at the moment. We started with two that were selected as housecats and to be buddies for each other. Then someone dumped a mama and kittens in our back equipment shed - three more - then this year on New Year's Day a cat appeared on our porch, telling us he was very hungry and thirsty. We named him Happy for the holiday. It took a while to integrate him into the cat pack but after being neutered 6 months it is finally happening.

I am glad you are feeling better. My hubby thinks I am nuts when I workout when I am a little under the weather, but I think the endorphins help me get well sooner. Though I have to be careful to not overdue it --- which can be hard at times.

When I was last lifting regularly at the gym (that would be last December - until now, I've been doing bodyweight & kettlebell stuff for strength), I could deadlift 95 lbs. - solid, considering that is close to my bodyweight (I'm 102 lbs.). If I kept at it from that point, I would be able to meet or exceed that amount by a bit.
At the last gym I worked out at in Texas, a powerlifting team would train while I was there, and they had a tiny member, a female who was my height (5'1") and of similar weight. But she was freakin' strong. I think she could squat 280 lbs., and deadlift around the same amount too. So size is a hurdle, but it can be overcome.
And I can't imagine being without my cat. Have you posted pics of your beloved furkids here yet? Maybe I'll post another one here so I can bore all the non-cat people as well, LOL.
Thanks for the link! My lifting education has begun. That deadlift involves much more of a squat-like posture than the straight-legged ones I've been doing. Looks like your quads can do part of the work. I have a similar exercise except with a weight in each hand and I think I am doing around 140 total weight. I'll try the one in the video next week and see what my proper weight is.
Haven't posted any fur-kid photos yet But soon.

I want to be able to do that .

I have pictures of my cat on my cell phone but not any pictures of my kids. That is just not right
I don't know how to do the multiple quotes.
Anyway --- Moondust be really careful with the deadlifts. Watch the video and read up on it as much as possible so that you don't hurt yourself.

Thanks, Peaches, I will be careful. I'm not out to set any records, just to learn new exercises and figure out what people are talking about. Originally I went to the gym because of a problem with lower back spasms that made it impossible to even wear a portable CD player belt, so I am very careful of my back in particular.

I'm more of a dog person than cat person, but that doesn't mean I can't ooh over felines, too.

Actually, I should start off with yesterday's course of events. I made it to my Thursday night running meetup to do a 4 mile loop. I suspected it would be hard because: 1.)it was seriously hot, as in over 90 F even at 7 PM (when all of us headed out), 2.)I'm still not at 100% capacity and 3.) I did an interval session the previous evening.
But I did not foresee not even being able to finish the last few hundred yards of it. My pace for the first half was respectable (around 10:30/mile), and I even picked it up to a sub-10 min. pace around mile 3. Somewhere, though, my body just gave out and didn't want to go no more. So I walked the very last part, and called it a day. It happens, and what can you do? I'm just glad I didn't pass out, because heat stroke is a serious threat for a lot of us who participate in lengthy, outdoor activities in hot climates.
Alright, back to today. It was stressful, and it was there. I didn't track what I ate, though I will say that there were milk choco pieces w/hazelnuts, spicy blue-corn tortilla chips, and antipasto involved. And my activity for the day consisted of some walking and light grocery shopping. Later on, I'll tackle more household stuff (laundry and the dishes). Oh, and I'm gonna make my turkey meat loaf tonight as well. I'm determined to get all of that out of the way in the next few hours. I gotta strike that iron when it's HOT!!!!

Alrighty, then, that encourages me. Though tonight's pic is not even of my cat, but of DH. This was taken very recently, and it's funny how the Iraqi air/sand matches the color of his hair, LOL.
LOL.. figured it was the guy in plain army clothes. Didn't even know what fatigues are but assumed you weren't talking about the lion .. but Anne is right.. about the same colour
Honestly, I would've thought it odd if the first picture she showed us of her DH was one where he was wearing a lion head...
But what's up with the lion guy, anyway? Mascot of some sort?

This past weekend feels like it's been a lost one, in terms of productivity. I spent most of Saturday taking care of errands I was too tired to do during the week, and when I returned home, instead of cleaning and prepping veggies, making meals for the following week, cleaning, etc., I just putzed on the internet. Then I had dinner at my BIL's, and went to see the Harry Potter movie afterward, which was good, but not great.
Today's better, and I should be able to get in a 5-mile run later, but definitely on a treadmill. It is just too hot and humid for my tastes right now, and I don't want to repeat Thursday's flameout.
I think the new round of meds my doctor prescribed me is jacking me up w/restlessness. I haven't been able to sleep for long since Friday night.

Dh and his colleagues were at a children's event w/their Iraqi counterparts that was focused on safety. The guy in the costume is sort of the Iraqi equivalent of McGruff the Crime Dog.

I wound up not doing my 5 miles today, and it's just as well. A thunderstorm blew through my area, and as dedicated as I am to training... I'm not THAT dedicated, LOL. Besides, it was nice chilling out at my homestead. I got a lot of stuff done and out of the way. So instead, I decided that kettlebell swings, squat jumps, and walking lunges would form the bulk of today's workout. Squat jumps = Ugh, in my book. But they are an invaluable exercise.
Even though it's already 10:30 PM here, I'm still feeling quite alert and awake. I hope that by reading the "Florida ESOL Consent Decree of 1990" (one of the the handouts I got at a job-related workshop 2 weeks ago), I'll be on my way to Sleepyland very soon.
TheWookie - Yup, dh is still in the sandbox, and has a few more months to go. I'm starting to get really restless and anxious, but I don't feel like counting down the days, either. That just gets me even more antsy about it. I'd prefer to keep myself distracted until then.
It certainly does get tough when my phone conversations with him are punctuated by his saying, "a mortar just went off, so if I hang up it means that we had to go and find a safe spot."

Sure, a thunderstorm one day. Then tomorrow it'll be a tsunami and before you know it you can't go because the cat is sitting on your workout pants :p

Keeping your dh in my thoughts, and you as well!

That must be tough (with your DH in Iraq) and indeed, I'd not use a calculator to count off the days either.. (or maybe I would..)
ROTFLOL over what Juleske wrote!
