8/30/09

Exercise
-10 mile run @ avg. 9:52/mi pace
-Fastest pace: 6:28/mi (!)

I've also logged 40.33 miles since getting the Forerunner. That figure doesn't incl. the times I forgot to push the start button, so that should really be around 45-50 miles.

My body is starting to get used to the distance, so even though my legs still feel like lead by the end, it's not as bad as last week, where I wanted to fall asleep on the ground, but the only thing that was preventing me from doing that was the heat of the pavement. :P

I went to Panera and picked up a coffee and 2 breakfast egg sandwiches (one is reserved for tomorrow). So glad I went to the one right by the starting point of my run, because I bumped into a fellow club member, and he gave me a "buy 1 sandwich get 1 free" coupon. Yay!

Gotta shower, and chug more java. I'll head out in a while to see "District 9" as well. And even though I got so much stuff done between Friday and yesterday, it seems like I still have more to scratch off the "to-do" list. *sigh*

I saw "District 9" and it is definitely downbeat, esp. on a Sunday afternoon, but I still enjoyed it. My friends and I then had lunch at IHOP, and we were all more brain-fried than we thought: one of them actually poured coffee onto her pancakes, thinking it was syrup. And the sad thing was it took quite a few seconds for this to register w/her (and me). I was wondering why the syrup was looking so thin and runny, too. Heh.

I'm craving all things ginger-related right now. My dinner was a Kashi frozen entree (ginger/lemongrass chicken), and I'll have ginger tea in a few. It's probably because I'm still burping up salsa from today's lunch.

So awesome on the running. Whitney is so into running too. I really admire the sheer ability to stay doing the same thing for a long time. I have been looking around for some fitness competitions to sign up for, and the easiest thing to find is running.

I just like it better in theory than I do in practice.

Did you get the regular sandwhich from Panera? At ours, they introduced the new Power Breakfast Sandwich this week. 340 calories, 22 grams protein, 4 gram fiber. I am planning on trying it out pretty soon. It's basically, lean ham, cheese, and egg, on wheat bread.

District 9 is on my maybe-see list. It sounds interesting, but I'll keep note that it's not a movie to see when I'm PMSing, as it'd likely make me even more depressed.

All sorts of good-for-you stuff in ginger! I should eat it more. But that Kashi ginger lemongrass chicken is good! I try to keep ginger tea on hand, but I think I'm currently out (I'm not all that great about using fresh ginger before it goes bad ).

That's a decent calorie amount and macros! Now I'm a little sad there's not a Panera nearby me for breakfast purposes.

I LOVE Panera!!! And it makes me sad that we don't have one in Vancouver. Everything is good there (well, I haven't tried it all) and I love their bagels. Perfect refeed food or to fuel up for a long run.

Great Run!! Are you planning for a Marathon or is running your preferred Cardio? Either way that is pretty awesome. :D

Do your legs ever cramp up on you? If so how do you try to prevent this?

District 9 was awesome, but agreed not a super upbeat movie.

Now of course I am craving Coffee... must go see about making some. ;)

Just popping in to say Hi. Like you took a bit of a forum break (but unlike you also a bit of a training break). Back at both.

10 miles, wow! Heck of a run!

Oooh, ooh, ooh, a workout was done tonight!!

Exercise

NROLFW Workout 5A
3x4 (except for planks)

1-armed db snatch - 20, 22.5, 25 lbs.
DB single-leg Romanian deadlift - 15 lbs. each
Barbell BO Row - 60 lbs., 45 lbs. last 2 sets
DB single-arm overhead squat - 15/30 lbs; 5/10 lbs. last 2 sets
DB incline bench press - 20 lbs. each; 22.5 lbs.ea. last set
Plank - 120 secs.
Reverse woodchop - 22.5 lbs.

This workout served to remind me that: 1.) I could lift heavier on some of the exercises, esp. the db snatch, bent-over row and bench press and 2.) those overhead squats are EVIL. I'd forgotten how humbling they can be, and had to decrease weight significantly on the last 2 sets because I didn't want to sacrifice form in this round.

Tomorrow's a tempo run, which I'm looking forward to at the moment. However, my tune may change then once I actually get to the park for my workout.

No, and I'll have to look for it next time I'm there! When I go to Panera for breakfast, I usually have the breakfast souffle, but was craving an egg and cheese this past Sunday... I'll make sure to order it next. It sounds great.

In that case, don't see it unless you're in a very good mood. Seriously, humanity also comes off so awful in that film, save for the protagonist. And even he doesn't really redeem himself until nearly the film's end.

Me either! That's why I enjoy making my spicy Thai peanut noodles, or Anne's Tandoori chicken recipe - they make me use my fresh ginger supply. But the ginger tea that I'm currently drinking is from a packet. It's some Jamaican brand that my MIL gave me, since she was never going to drink it. It's quite good, actually. Very spicy and if I came down w/a cold, I'd want to chug it all the time.

Yes, and that must be why there are 2 of them by where my long runs are on Sundays, LOL!! As much as I love having breakfast in a greasy-spoon kind of place on Sundays (i.e., a diner), that really hasn't been an option down here in Florida. (My favorite diners are in New York, and especially in New Jersey, which I think has the highest concentration of diners in the US). If I could, I'd get the Happy Waitress sandwich as my post-long run meal: it's an open-faced grilled cheese w/bacon and tomatoes. However, I'll admit I like Panera's coffee A LOT as well.

Based on the recent outpouring of love for Panera, we should organize a meetup or something there, LOL.

I'm currently training for the Half-Marathon of the Palm Beaches, taking place in Dec. Which reminds me, I spoke with my running coach about this... and she gave me clearance to start running marathons early next year! Woot! I'll just have to bump up the mileage again in Dec./Jan., but not by much - at the peak, I'll be logging in 30 miles/week for the HM training. And my goal at the moment is reasonable: run a marathon in under 5 hours, which, based on my current pace, is realistic.

I've been pretty lucky so far in that I don't get leg cramps. I think it's because, one, my leg strength has always been pretty robust (As much as I hated exercising throughout high school and college, I sometimes played soccer, did lots of walking, and went hiking.), and two, I make sure to keep myself hydrated and get my minerals in, esp. potassium and sodium. I drink Gatorade on my long runs, and when I feel even the slightest hint of my legs feeling tight, I immediately slow down.

Props for slowing down when you feel that your legs are getting tight. My problem is that I just burn myself out and I push through the pain. I have learned the hard way that it is NEVER a good idea to push through the pain when running UNLESS it's your race. Then I'd be willing to sacrifice my body for a PB time.

I go through phases with ginger, but I usually toss any leftover ginger in the freezer. If I were smart I'd peel it and maybe even slice it, but I usually don't think about it until I'm trying to bang a piece off on the edge of the counter.

And boy, December sounds close when you're talking about running a HM. Although you seem to be fairly high on the mileage now, so maybe it's not that close.

Hey, she's at 10 miles already, so just another 3ish, right?

I have no idea why it never occurred to me to freeze my ginger. Sheesh.

Yeah sounds like you are darn close to being ready for that Half Marathon, if you aren't already. That is so cool.

The conventional wisdom in marathon/half-marathon training is that you don't actually run the 13.1 or 26.2 miles until the day of the race; the peak long-run mileage is somewhere around 12 (for HMs) and 20 (marathons), and you taper off in overall mileage a week before the big race. But some do advocate doing a "simulator run" so that you can feel prepared for the workload. Jeff Galloway includes a 26-mile run on his marathon-training program about a few weeks before race day.

I managed to get out of work early, so I prepped my dinner for tonight (spicy peanut Thai noodles with chicken, yum!), and ate 2 chocolate chip cookies and had a half-cup of coffee to ramp me up for this evening's coaching session. We'll see how today's tempo run will develop. Will I be a sprightly rabbit out there on the grass, or a leaden and slow like a tortoise? Hmmm....

And going back to the frozen ginger, duh, I never realized I could do that until you pointed it out Anne. Thank you for the tip.

Good to know! In a theoretical sense, at least, since I have no short term-plans to run a half-marathon or marathon.

Spicy peanut Thai noodles + choc chip cookies = drool

Tonight's workout:

-4 miles, completed in 38:13 (appx. 9:33/mile)
-Core work: 20 leg flutters, 20 crunches, 20 (10 each side) passing-the-ball side to side (What is the name of this move? Can you tell I'm not a fan of core exercises?); 15 regular pushups; 15 wide-stance pushups; 15 slow tempo pushups; 12 diamond pushups (had to these on the knees - I suck at this variation); 1-minute plank

No plyo tonight, so I should've done the bodyweight matrix yesterday at the end of my workout last night. But who woulda thunk that my running coach had to leave early because of a child-related emergency? Someone else took the reins for the core workout piece in her place.

Overall feeling tonight was "meh," meaning that I was sucking wind the entire time I was out there. I actually started off pretty aggressively, running at a 7:30/mile pace for the first mile... and that may have been my undoing, too. It was also really humid, so the farther I got, the harder I had to breathe. On the bright side, however, I did shave off quite a few seconds off my 4 miler (last week's was 38:58).

And because a few folks here have been posting animal pics, here's mine, though it's from Oct. 2008.

It's my hubby and Pumpkin, taken a few minutes before a Blessing of the Animals ceremony that was hosted by the Catholic chapel on Ft. Hood last year. This year I'll have to find a church by my house that celebrates the feast day of St. Francis, or does the animal blessing (non-denominational is fine).

It is soooo not fair! You have a sexy man as your cat prop! This makes your picture so much more appealing.

I had no man to put in my goat picture. Just the goat.

I need a man to make these pictures more interesting.

Look at it . . .he totally sold that cat, and I'm a dog person!!!

I had no man to put in my goat picture. Just the goat.

I need a man to make these pictures more interesting.

Look at it . . .he totally sold that cat, and I'm a dog person!!!

ROTFLMAO!

But it's true. And I have neither pet nor sexy man as pet prop. *sigh*

Nice work on shaving some time off your run, Joyce! But hope the "meh" feeling stays away for the next WO!

Nice job on the 4 miler! Was it a tempo run? Have you read Jack Daniels' Running Formula? Excellent running book.

Cute Cat with Hubby Pic. I like how the orangeness of the kitty contrasts with that beautiful blue sky.

Good job on the tempo run. 7:30 pace has gotta hurt! I wouldn't have been able to carry on!

How many miles are you clocking a week and what schedule are you following? Have you got a time your aiming for in the half marathon?

I sure hope so, too. It's been drizzling intermittently ever since I got home from work, so I may have to go to the gym and run on the treadmill tonight if it becomes a downpour.

Haven't read Running Formula yet, though it's on my wish list. The book that I'm really looking forward to getting is Born to Run. And yes, last night's workout was a tempo run, technically speaking. It sure didn't feel like it when I had to walk for a stretch of it, though, lol.

7:30 hurt like hell last night, and I had to really slow down because of it. Tonight I'll have to keep it at a steadier pace so that I don't burn out.

I've been averaging btw. 18-20 miles a week for the last few weeks, and will increase to 30 miles/week sometime in November. I don't have a set time goal for my Dec. HM, though I'd like to finish it in under 2 hours. We'll see how that pans out, though.
