What a rude wench! Jeez; that's amazing how people can be so catty right to someone's face. Do they think that we don't understand what they're saying?

I've had plenty of experiences where people hear what I have to say (which is usually quite against the norm of what other people think), and then just pass on by without asking further, so I get what you went through. But just think if you ever run into that lecturer again after you've gotten farther in your training, how surprised she'll be to see how great you look. Then she'll be jealous. And maybe worry that you will beat her up with your big muscles! (Evil laugh)

I actually thought it was hilarious. I laughed about it all day long. If I hadn't been so freakin' sick that day, I prolly would have logged in on my log that night.

I am an odd person in that it doesn't effect me if people are trying to be mean or catty to me, and it honestly doesn't even offend me. I have never been under the impression that all humanity should instinctively gravitate toward each other, and if someone happens to mildly dislike me . . I don't mind at all. LOL It doesn't even make me dislike them.

I am weird, I know.

BUT, I will point out the term 'catty' in your quote. Isn't it odd that a rude or mean woman is typically referred to as catty?

+1 for dog people.

we are back to ground zero.

I will say, that I have NEVER been called Catty . . . .

I have however been called a B*tch (in several languages)

Just further proof I'm a dog person

Yeah; I can tell that about you. I think that's what drew me to your log, actually; we are somewhat the same in these sentiments. It does amaze me though, how people do things like that. There are plenty of people I dislike, but I would never try to subtly belittle them like that. I favor general benevolence. But as for humanity instinctively gravitating toward each other. . . . .most of it repels me, actually.

I think that's one thing I like about most of these logs. People are generally self-confident and goal-directed. As well as intelligent and funny. They don't have to fulfill their empty psyches by putting down others.

Hehe.. reading your log stumbled across this one. Modified it and made it to 40 pushups in the end.
Too funny/sad that when stopping it for a few months, even 10 regular push-ups felt hard.. they still feel hard!
In a way doing pushups is a trick!

Nice of you to drop in, Espi. And no, the funny stories do not outweigh the workout info in my log. . . . yet. But I'm working on it, I'm working on it. I'm just very, very busy most of the time. And anyway. . .I did start this log as a, ahem, workout log, which most of you funny posters seem to forget in your logs.

Could it be that you all are using the funny stories to hide the fact that your workouts are non-existent? Hmmmm? I think there's a forum out there for you called "FunnyPosts.com."

Been going all the way through now.. and am I ever impressed!

You don't even need that program :

I used to be able to do one of them, but that's all, and I haven't tried it in at least 3 years. To my surprise, I did two pretty easily, and almost got a third, but just couldn't make it.

Then I showed my younger son how to learn a headstand, with putting the knees on the elbows, balancing there until it's easy, then slowly raising the legs up straight. When I used to do these I was always wobbly, and couldn't hold the headstand for more than a few seconds. Today I got up there easily and held it for 30 seconds or more, and could have kept it up a lot longer if I'd wanted to. My core felt so strong doing it, it was an amazing difference.

Then I did pushups, to see how many I could do, and I did 21!!! Two months ago I struggled to do 5!

A testament to NROLFW; I love this program!

Chinups , handstands & 20 pushups! Yay!

It's a neat mix of both workouts & funny interludes. So, keep on doing what you did.

Re the wide/snatch-grip DLs & ensueing discussion: apparently Cosgrove really likes to introduce partial Olympic lifts , thinking they are the most bang for the buck. The only downside is that they are truly hard to learn properly. In that sense I'm a bit amazed so many still manage to do them..
I'm starting on an Oly-only program in the next 16 weeks in preparation of my very first meet.. it's nearly scaring the bejezus out of me .

I agree that they are hard to learn properly. I liked having them introduced early in the NROLFW, but it's true, I wasn't doing them right until I got Rippetoe and studied the proper form. There's not a lot of explanation of proper form in Lou's book, he just kind of throws us in there.

I would love to have a real Oly-trained coach, but aside from the financial aspect of it, which I can't do now, how does one even find a coach like that? I would worry that just randomly finding/picking one I would end up with one like the "personal trainers" at the gyms: sound like they know a lot, but really know squat! (pun not intended!)

Finding a trainer is actually easier than you'd think. There's a national (Olympic) weightlifting association and they most certainly will have a website & an email address.
All you need to do is to search their website & otherwise contact them by email/phone and ask for the nearest Olympic weight lifting club/trainer..
Hey.. did the google/bing for you & presto: it's a downloadable Excel spreadsheet which I didn't need: http://weightlifting.teamusa.org/content/index/1808

The funny part of it.. it's actually even very cheap to become a member of a weight lifting club. The major problem is going to be to 'be in luck' and live close to one. A club I've been to , charges only like 20-25 USD/month and this includes wonderful coaching by a very good trainer. Better than my current one actually.. too bad it's almost an hour of driving each way to get there..

The gym I go to, is owned by my trainer to whom I went on the proposal of my SO, who (rightly) thought I needed help on form with my lifts.

The guy immediately helped me correct bad form on deadlifts (bar staying too far away from shins etc) ... it's not that I lack enthusiasm but somehow never understood what I was doing wrong from just written descriptions.. only when seeing myself and getting regular cues from someone else, things clicked!

But then he just bluntly stated at the next session that we were going to work on Oly lifts from now on.. I was perplexed & excited at the same time
So, have been going once a week from Sep thru April, then twice a week from May thru August & from Sept thru December (and probably till after the meet) go 3x/wk after figuring out that the fuel costs of going there (it's a 25min drive vs a 25min WALK) is the same as what I pay for each visit to the local gym. It's just a PITA to have to drive there... & way more relaxing to be able to just walk or cycle to a gym.

Heck, mrEspi is even thinking to learn the Oly lifts as well & start our own club in town.. you need a LOT less equipment for Oly than for anything else.. it's just that the barbells themselves are expensive. But they last a life-time

Wow. Sounds like you have a plan! Thanks for the links. It's true that it's hard to see your own flaws when you're lifting. Even a mirror won't clue you in to some of them, and having an outside observer to correct you must be priceless. So you're saying you join an Oly gym for 20-25 a month, and that includes training? And you can work out there as much as you want? Hmm...I might have to look into that. Although, I just got a 24 month gym membership at my current gym for 12.50 a month.

I have to be careful of my expenses, because I live in expensive southern California, in order to have my kids in a particular private school that's located there. I'm sending two boys to that school, plus living in Orange County on just my own salary. It's hard. If it weren't for the school I would never, never live here. Way too pricey.

Spammed you with the locations in CA upon seeing you live in Orange County.
I even looked up some cities like Emeryville which does seem to be the closest to you. If Oakland is the heart of Orange county, that's less than 10 miles?

Espi, I have no idea what the heart of OC is. I've only lived here 18 months and have had no time to explore other than driving to and from school and work. But I don't think Oakland is near me. But, I did see one in Lake Forest, which is the next town over from mine, and San Juan Capistrano is not far, either.

20-25 euros a month is extremely cheap over here.. but am seeing that there's a hyooge & fierce competition in the US when it comes to gym fees! This probably is caused by the gyms having a lot of (incompetent) personal trainers that charge an arm and a leg to their customers while our gyms nearly always have paid (& still very incompentent) trainers that aren't paid extra by customers as it's all included in the fee...

So... this is just saying that .. I'll need to withdraw that statement of how an Oly gym membership might be very cheap since you might end up being disappointed here. But... Lil'J & tkinsley would know for sure if that's true, as well as Bytsi & MissJane who all have Oly trainers

Geckos, geckos?! We might have to start another poll on geckos vs. hamsters. Who is it who has that big gecko avatar? Every time my 8 year old sees it, he says "that's Geico!" (And this from a boy who does not watch TV in my house; we don't have one. Where does he get this stuff?)

Oakland is a good 8 hour drive north of Orange County, Espi (it is across the bay from San Francisco). Orange County is between Los Angeles & San Diego.

Ooooo , I just uses maps.google.nl & got a reference to Oakland. No idea where OC exactly was/is.
Isn't Orange County very conservative as well? Saw the movie 'Milk' a few days ago, which is a semi-documentary on the life of Harvey Milk as the first openly gay politician. My have the times changed (mostly for the better).

See, I pay 40 euros/month to the guy owning this Oly gym, which used to be around 5 euros/session & is going to be around 3-4 euros/session now I will go 3 times/week.

My BFF who trains 5 times/week paid 20 euros/month , that's just 1 euro /session. Too bad her trainer isn't around all that much.

Nowhere near that much!!!

I think if I paid one hour at a time, full rate, it might be that much... but I buy sessions in bulk, and Jason has been kind enough to give me a discounted rate as well... I think it ends up somewhere in the $35-$40 / hour range (which is really VERY reasonable for the level of training), but I try not to think about it .

Skipped workout today, due to schedule conflicts. Really busy week started today:

Sunday (today): work 730am to 430pm.

Monday: work 830-530, go home and make dinner, get kids to bed, make birthday cake for oldest son's birthday party Tuesday.

Tuesday: get up 430am to get boys up for birthday ocean fishing cruise. Pick up birthday boy's friend 530, cruise at 630. Home from cruise, take boys out to lunch, back home for birthday cake.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: work 830-530

Saturday: on call at hospital 8am until 8am Sunday

Sunday: work 10am - 630pm.

Going to be a very busy week for me; don't forsee any workouts in there. Maybe Tuesday evening if I'm not too beat from the day. Doubtful.

Probably not posting much. But hopefully I'll have some pics of the huge fish the boys catch, if they catch anything.

Later....

Happy birthday to your son - good luck with your busy week!

in re: oly lifting I looked at the link and my options are quite limited here location wise not to mention I am lucky to be going to the gym for 17.95 a month let alone paying for coaching on top of it despite me desperately wanting to do it someday. I need another job to support my athletic habits

Ooo a birthday fishing cruise. Sounds fun. :D

Though yeah your week looks fairly well packed in. I hope you get to sleep or have some kind of fun Saturday.

I just hope that you manage to survive that 4:30 am start and the fishing cruise.
