My second time thru always seems easier to me. I think we are really getting our muscles warmed up by then.

Good job on 3 x 120 sec planks!!

Sorry you are feeling snitty

Looks like a good workout. RDL with Bent Over Row, is some heavy lifting.

My stepmom was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Sorry I've been snitty, but it was a shock and made me ultra sensitive for some reason. Maybe because I work in a breast clinic and see this all the time, but I never thought it would hit my own family.

Hey, LL, I'm really interested in your avi--what is that painting? It really speaks to me. I'd love to see the original.

I'm so sorry to hear about your stepmom. You are allowed to be snitty all you want.

Thanks, everyone. It's hard, especially as I live 3000 miles from her, so can't see her easily. We'll know more about her prognosis in a week or so, after she meets with the surgery team.

Fang, the painting is called "Winter Evening" and it is by my all time favorite artist, Bryan Larsen. I have this print, and several others of his, as well as one original. You can see all of his works here, on the Quent Cordair website. Warning: if you like this print, and you go to the site, be prepared to spend a long time looking at the art; it is the best collection of Romantic Realism in the world.

My mother went through that years ago. It's definitely something that throws you for a loop when you find out. I hope for your stepmom that it's a good prognosis.

Default Stage 5, Workout 4A

11/3/09

1 Arm DB Snatch
4 x 4 x 37.5
These felt a bit hard on the left side. Right is solid, left is a bit wobbly. One rep on the left I almost got too far off balance with the DB over my head too far back. Had a quick rush of adrenaline "uh-oh, gonna have to drop it," but I didn't. I had planned to try the last set at 40, but didn't feel safe to do that.

DB 1 Leg RDL
4 x 4 x 37.5's
Getting better on the right with these. Still not as solid on the right, but improving.

BB Bentover Row
3 x 4 x 85
1 x 4 x 90

DB 1 Arm OH Squat
2 x 4 x 17.5/35
2 x 4 x 20/40
Hate these. Feels like such an awkward position, all twisted. I don't think I really am twisted, but it feels so.

DB Incline Bench Press
4 x 6 x 32.5's
Wanted to try 35's on these today, but there wasn't anyone there I felt comfortable asking to help me get them up, and I know I wouldn't be able to get them in position by myself. So I just added two reps to each set, and the sixth rep on every set was HARD! Funny to see myself holding these heavy DBs overhead and my arms shaking, even though it feels solid.

Plank
2 x 120 sec.

Reverse Woodchop
2 x 4 x 40

Only two sets of planks and woodchops because it was getting late again. (Plus, I hate the two minute planks )

Bodyweight Matrix
Set 1: 2:28
Rest: 5:02 (Spaced out and rested 6 seconds too long)
Set 2: 2:20
Felt really strong on these today; think it was that I just said to myself "I am NOT going to stop to rest this time!" and I managed to get to 15 or 18 jump lunges before I had to rest, and I did all the squat jumps without resting. Granted, I didn't get very far off the ground on them, but I did at least clear it.

Feeling better lately. Haven't heard further news from my stepmom yet, but I got all the details of my impending move ironed out, and work has been good. And my mom's xmas present to my family is to fly the four of us out to see her for a week over Christmas, so I will get to see all my family, including my stepmom and my dad, for the first time in several years. Happy about that. Maybe there will be snow there! (It's Boston, though, so you never can be sure of snow, just cold.) The boys are very excited.

Sorry to hear about your stepmom. Good news about the Christmas vacation and getting to see everyone.

Your workouts are looking very strong. Nice job on the OH squats--hate those and am inordinately pleased when I can do it at 15/30 without risking injury.

Thanks! I know what you mean about those darn OH squats. I always feel like my lower back is getting strained on one side. Glad I'm done with them.

I will do my last stage 5 workout tonight or tomorrow, and then on to stage 6! Yay!

Congrats another stage (almost) done! You are looking good! I am interested in what weights you use on the lat pulldowns in stage 6.

Default Stage 6, Workout 1A

11/10/09

Decided to skip the last stage 5 workout B; because last week was so hectic I didn't get to the gym at all, and also because I was really bored with that stage and tired of the two hour gym sessions. So I just went on to stage 6.

Negative Chin Up
2 x 20 sec.
1 x 22 sec.
These were not as hard as I thought they would be to stretch the time out, but my arms shook terribly the whole time. I guess I'll have to figure out next time how to add weight. Also, there was no good place to do them, so I finally did them on the assisted chin up machine; just without the assist part. The only chin up bar we have is the long bar attaching the two parts of the lat pulldown stations, and there were three guys using different parts of that. Also, couldn't figure out how to get up to it; it's high and there's no step nearby. If it's not crowded next time I think I'll bring over the step I use for step ups and try that bar.

Underhand Lat Pulldown
2 x 2 x 110
2 x 2 x 115
4 x 2 x 120
2 x 2 x 122.5

BB Split Squat
2 x 10 x 65
1 x 10 x 70
Felt like I should be able to do more weight, but my shoulders and arms were so TIRED! It was hard to hold the BB.

Push Ups
3 x 10 x 2 sec. rest at bottom on each rep
Hard by the end of the last set

Really nice to be out of the gym in 45 minutes!

My shoulder is still slightly bothering me; I think it was way back in stage 2 or 3 that I injured it, and it has only begun to be noticeably better in the last two days. But, I kept working out on it through all the stages anyway, and I didn't notice that it held me back any.

Re: neg chin-ups-- I usually just wheeled a bench over to the bar (my gym has one near the lat station, so it was convenient). But, didn't you say in my log that you can do chin-ups? If it were me, I'd just start doing those instead with a slow descent. By the way, I think it's cool you can do these for so long right off the bat-- took me until my last 6A workout to do all of them at 20 seconds.

Re shoulder: I wonder if taking the week off from the gym helped your shoulder? I think you should put "massage" on your Christmas list.

Default Stage 6, Workout 1B

11/13/09

Rev. Lunge, 1 DB on Shoulder
4 x 10 x 30
I couldn't do more than one set with holding the weight up off my shoulder; the last three sets I had to rest the edge of the DB on my delt, and it was still hard on the arms. Not too bad on the lower body, though. I have decided these are not supposed to be much of a lower body exercise. It's upper body in disguise.

DB 2-Point Row
2 x 10 x 35
2 x 10 x 40

DB Push Press
1 x 10 x 22.5's
1 x 9 x 22.5's
1 x 9.5 x 20's
1 x 8.5 x 20's
These were HARD!!! I am going to have to look back and see what I was doing on DB shoulder presses in stage 1. I thought I got to 20's at least, so figured I'd be doing 25 on the push presses. No Way! I guess because they come after all those other arm/shoulder exercises.

Back Extension
3 x 10 x 35

Incline Reverse Crunches
3 x 10 on incline bench

I agree. But it took me a lot longer to realize that.

I applied the same logic when I first did this move and had the same trouble. In fact, I think I was trying to do 25 lbs, too. That weight came, but not until I started focusing on generating power through my hips and basically squatting before pressing. You'll get it. You've rocked all the other power moves, so this one will come, too.
