What?!? A trip to the gun range. Count me in. I am the only female competitive shooter in my area. I am also a certified Range Officer. I shoot competition at least once a month. The gym and the range are the two things that allow me to retain what little sanity I have left.
It appears that we need to have a shooting competition at the next summit. Or maybe have a shooting summit (girls only). I used to be a great shot--years ago. The last time I shot a gun I was a few months pg with my oldest--who's almost 16. I think it scarred him for life as he loves shooting airsoft, pellet guns, whatever.
We did go paintballing for his birthday--that was SO FUN. Although I was covered in bruises the next day.
I have been thinking lately that I need a 'class' of some sort. I just don't know what kind it would be.
I am pretty sure they would work with it at work, but I just don't know what I would be interested in.
Sounds silly but I think I would like to take an adult clogging class
I bet clogging would be fun. I love taking classes, but I never stick with them for very long--scheduling and/or driving becomes a factor for me after a while. But it sure is fun to try new things.
Hi! I've been perusing your log and, dang, you are strong! Reading about martial arts makes me miss the class I took growing up. Such a cool thing to do.
Thanks . Last night my martial arts instructor said that I was very deceptive. You look at me being 5'2"+ and don't recognize that I have a lot of power in my body.
One of the things that he says in NROL is find something you enjoy and do it. I think that is the key to staying on track. I don't want to get out of shape because it would be so hard to do some of the things that I love.

I tried a belly dancing class. I looked like a drunk trying to walk a straight line. It was very fun and entertaining, but it just wasn't me. You might just start trying different things until you find what is YOU.

I have never done the paintball thing. I think it sounds fun. I would be game for that too. I do like laser tag, but it doesn't punish you for getting shot.

My form on my squats @ 145 is not ideal. I am afraid if I do the ROM I won't be able to get up. Trying to edge down a little bit more each time. But know that it isn't what it is on my lighter weights.
I messed up and rested for 120 sec. instead of 90 sec. after the step-ups. I knew that seemed easier today. Was hoping it was me getting stronger, but instead it was me getting more rest.

I wish I could continue belly dance class, but HM training has eaten so much of my free time already. But as bad as I was at belly dance, it improved my hip mobility. And despite looking ridiculous, I also felt a bit glamorous while doing the moves.
That reminds me, DH brought back with him a belly dance outfit. I know what's on his mind, LOL.

Perhaps Peaches was thinking about all the fun she could have at the gun range. Don't blame her one bit, either!

I've never even held a gun, but always thought I would like to try shooting. However, with the poor hand/eye coordination I generally display it might not be safe to be in the vicinity.

Yeah, it can be hard to pick and choose the activities to be involved in. There are so many things I would like to do, but I only have so much free time and it is already accounted for.
It sounds like you will get to put those BD lessons to use --- with the outfit and everything. How cool is that.
I need to get back to the gun range. Kids have had swine flu, and I am really trying to bond with my youngest with shooting. So, I don't want to go without him now. Maybe next week he and I can go.

I have pretty bad eye hand coordination too. They banned me from the medicine balls at the last gym I worked out in. They said that I was too dangerous to those around me

My martial arts class was unexpectedly canceled tonight. So, I came home and hit the gym.
NROL Strength D 2 of 4
Warmup: 5 min treadmill, 5 overhead squats with oly bar, 10 wall pushups, 5 oly bar shoulder press
Super Set full rest
chin-up 6/1/6/1/10 OK I didn't do them all the way. I found that if my arms are slightly bent I can do them but I can't do them with starting from straight arms (I tried and I tried) So I got on the Smith Machine with a ball under my knees and I would lift myself off the ball and do a chin-up. Can't wait until I can do one all the way by myself. Still dreaming about it.
Barbell Shoulder Press 6@75,1@85, 6@75, 1@ 90, 10@65 On the 75# I had to do a slight push press on the last rep. I also had to do this on the 1@90. Oh well, will lower weights next time, maybe.
Super Set full Rest
Dumbbell bench press 2X6 @ 45's#
Wide-Grip Seated Row 8@85#, 7@ 85#
Lower-Body Russian Twist 2X10es with BW
And just because for fun, and I think it belongs in this workout a 3 min. plank.
Felt tired tonight and not real energetic. Walked slowly for about 15 min. on treadmill afterward and then stretched.
Max HR: 173
Avg HR: 126
Calories 476

That is so cool. I am not good enough for competition. I can put them all inside the 9 ring at self defense distance. But the guns I usually shoot have short barrels and are meant for short distance. Unfortunately, I am not much better with a longer barrel. I really want to practice and get better.
In the last week, I have been thinking about looking into getting my youngest son involved in competitive shooting. He doesn't have great form, but he is a natural. I might do it too, just because it would be fun, and encourage me to put in my practice time.
How do you get involved in competitive shooting? Any advice?
Gym, gun range and martial arts --- make life a happy life
What do you shoot? Besides my self defense guns (Ruger LCP and Kel-Tec P11), I also love to shoot my Beretta XP4 Storm 9mm. I like to say that shooting it is like having sex --- fun, feels good and want to do it as much as possible. (Hope that wasn't too vulgar)
I am catching up on you training log now. I saw that you also bow hunt. I never hunted but in Jr High I use to like to do bow practice. Too bad we don't live near each other --- we could have a jolly ole time.
You don't have to be good to shoot competition, just safe. I always finish last in the shoot, but always finish first in the female division. I am the reigning female champion for 2009.
As for your son, check with your local gun range. Ours offers free youth lessons during the winter. They meet every Saturday from 0800-1200. Everything is free and the kids have a great time. Also, uspsa.org is a great site. Check to see if there are competitions in your area. The NRA also has a kids program. Can't remember it off the top of my head, but you can check to see if they have youth programs in your area as well. USPSA is a great resource for adults as well. So is SASS or Cowboy Action Shooting. PM if you want a more specific list. I don't want to highjack a thread.
I shoot a 9mm M&P Pro Series, Bushmaster M-6 .223 Rifle, and Remington 20 gauge youth shootgun. I shoot 3 gun competitions as well.
I am the only female hunter I know. I often go hunting by myself since it's hard to break into the good ole boys club. Any time your in ND, give me a shout. I'd be happy to take you out to the range or field.

Never been paintballing. We don't have any ranges for that. My goal is to shoot in a competition in the lower 48. Two down, 46 to go.

I had never held a gun until May of 2008. Now, I practice almost nightly at home (dry-firing, holster/reholstering). I also volunteer at the range at teach beginner, female shooters how to shoot. They often respond to me better than my male counterparts.
Sorry for the High Jacking that has taken place. I am easily distrac...oh look, a butterfly.
No worries about high jacking --- appreciated your input.
I need to practice dry-firing, holster/reholstering. I conceal carry and I know that I am not fast enough. I have a friend who really practices drawing and dry firing alot. He went to a gun self defence seminar and they did the 21 feet run. They had a target coming at you from 21 feet and you had to draw and shoot before target got to you. I know they didn't shoot live fire, because he said most people got so nervous they shot themselves. I would just hate to be in a bad situation and shoot myself --- LOL
I did contact a local range that has competitions. I didn't see anything about classes. I emailed them, but I haven't heard back from then yet. I am excited. Too bad cold weather is closing in on us, I won't want to go shoot in the cold. Even though the shakiness from the cold is probably good practice.

Nice job hitting the gym when class was cancelled... I'm not sure I'd be that dilligent!
I don't know, you seem pretty diligent.

Thanks for the complement.
The kids are better, and it really worked out the best it could. My oldest son has lung problems. Since my youngest got sick first, I was aware of what was happening and got my oldest in the first day he showed signs. So, it was a blessing in its own way. Otherwise, I might have just thought my oldest was having normal lung issues until he was really sick.

Whenever I ask someone (guy) to spot me, they always give me lifting advice. Do others have this problem. Here are two examples from today.
The first guy when I was lifting 115, told me that I did it too easy and I should do at least 5 reps. I told him that I just make it look easy, but that it was a challenge for me and that I am following a program and it told me to do 1 rep. He looked at me like I had 3 heads.
The second time --- I actually failed on the lift, which was completely humiliating (I did it last time and thought that I could). Then he had to tell me that I really should be focused on toning up not bulking up. I looked at him and ask him if he was implying I was fat --- that backed him off. I am secure with my body but he didn't know that
Oct. 23,2009 Strength C 3 of 4
I really didn't want to do this workout. I am getting close to TOM coming to visit, my back was a little tweaky and I felt weak. But being the legalistic person I am; I did it.
Warmup: 5 min treadmill, 5 Oly Deadlifts, 5 Oly Romanian Deadlifts, 5 Oly Bent Over Row
Deadlift 6@135, 1@155, 4@140 (should have stopped here -- could tell back was getting weak), 1@135 OUCH!!!
Then I finally had the sense to stop. While I still could walk out on my own. Barely.
Haven't been able to do any exercise or martial arts since --- bummer. When will I learn

Way to make him feel really bad. It's amazing the stares I get for being in the gym and lifting weights. I know have two gentlemen at the gym who routines smile and nod when I walk in the door. It makes me feel good that someone believes I am not going to turn into the Incredible Hulk by lifting.
On a side note, I am going to meet with a trainer on Saturday afternoon. He specializes in fitness and martial arts. I am really interested in martial arts. I used to train Taekwondo, but my studio closed unexpectedly. I am hoping to start up again. *fingers crossed*

Yes.
Seriously... I've been (mis)corrected so many times it makes my head spin. If I took most of the advice I'd be skinny-fat and/or seriously injured... Glad you're confident in your body... I love your comeback!
I get unsolicited advice from every man in the gym these days. It's gotten really annoying. I don't know if they think I hang around the weight room to flirt, if I look like I have no idea what I'm doing, or if they are just trying in some foolish way to be helpful. It is very annoying. I miss the days of total anonymity when I could just do my routine without interruption. Comraderie is nice and all, but enough's enough.
Yay on bench pressing almost 120lbs again. You told him off pretty good
Personally I don't mind getting lifting advice at all, but it does tend to become a discussion after that.
Interesting how you are getting a weaker back so close to TOM. I've seen it written how ligaments tend to become slightly looser by then (same mechanisms going on as when you're pregnant, but on a miniature scale), but never really had a problem. I *do* seem to get more backpain in those days, but it could be a coincidence too (it's a recent problem)
People tend to leave me alone int he gym...I must put out a vibe
One of my co-workers now knows I lift a lot and likes to tell me what I am doing is wrong all the time. He told me that no one should ever front squat. Sweet! I have never seen him in the gym, but I imagine he is rather bro like.
hah.. I'd almost say the reverse. People should mostly focus on variations of a front squat (kb squat, goblet squat are good ones to start with) & a tougher one would be an overhead squat.
My form is still TERRIBLE on the back squat.. (getting better , but ever so slowly!)
I lost weight this week (YEAH!!!!!). I have now been doing Weight Watchers for 10 weeks and have lost a total of 3.5#. If I can keep this up, I could be down another 3 pounds by Christmas (fingers crossed).
I am also proud to say that I have not eaten a single piece of candy through the holiday. Even though I have a big big bowl full on my frig --- not touched a piece.

... In all seriousness, I tend to do better with an all-or-nothing mentality. I can't have ANY candy works a lot better than "I'll just have a litte bit." Little bits always become too much for me...

I'm the same. One is too many; a thousand's not enough.

Same here, but I'm not sure that candy is my bad food. Not that it can't be, just not usually.
