So are you looking in other cities for opportunities? I found that the best things happened to me when I did not limit myself to the vision I had for myself. There are all manners of places to go and things to do if your world if bigger than KS.
*cough Missouri cough*
I've taken a cursory glance in a couple other big markets where I have family, but at this point I'm content to stay here and try to find something because I do have a built in support system and a decent base of people I know here. I'm not opposed to moving--as I've applied for a few jobs that would require a move--but I'm not looking to move either.

Also what is it you do and what are you looking to do. The fact that I don't know tells me you are networking well enough. You have a HUGE arm with all your internet connections. Use it to sweep the world and open doors. Life should be exciting and fun and fullfillng. If not actively change it!
This is where it is kinda tricky. I'm a journalism major, so obviously something with a background of writing/communications is a plus. Also, I am writing for a racing website right now started by some racing writers that were laid off. I'm in on the ground level, and we have room for a ton of growth, but the problem is that we're not exactly rolling in the advertising revenue. I've got at least somewhat of a presence on the racing scene, and I would love to become big there, but I obviously can't keep doing it for limited pay.
They've been very good to me--I don't have nearly the cred that they do--so I owe it to them to stick with them for as long as I can. It's not precluding me from getting another job by any means, but at the same time, I'm being upfront in all of my cover letters about the situation, because, honestly, if the economy turned around and we started raking in the advertising money and they offered me $30K to write about racing full time, I would be doing that in a heartbeat.
I'm slowly studying for the CSCS too, hoping that will open some doors. If only I had a week to just go sit at a coffeeshop...

1. Have you considered technical writing? HUGE opp and money in that.
2. Grant writing? (again huge opps)
If you have a support system another thing you can consider is the many intern opps that are available. If there is a specific Mag or website that you like you can even contact them and they may open up an internship for you. Our company LOVE NCGs (New College Grads) because we can get them for cheap for awhile. The win/win is that they often sign on as full time employees after a few months.

I'm more worried about being happy than anything else at the moment, and I figure that may happen if I'm happy. (or it could make me happy. double jeopardy...)
I graduated with the right major--for me--at the complete wrong time, and I just wish life was actually moving forward. Instead it feels like an endless cycle of nothing.
It's horribly brutal to go from being told that you're extremely ahead of the curve to being hopelessly behind--even though you did what you were supposed to do to stay in that position--in the span of three years or less.
Plus, I'm working at a job for a company that I basically have no future with, and add in the fact that working there makes me feel like the season two version of Jim Halpert, and life suuuuuuuuuuuuucks.
dude, you are in the exact same position i am right now.
EVERYONE or nearly everyone who graduated in the past 3 years, and probably the NEXT 3 years is going to be in the same position as well. There just are not the opportunities for people getting out of college as there were 5 or 6 years ago, and that sucks.
For us, we're graduating at probably the worst time in the past 60-70 years. But, i try to look at the bright side... there are people all over without homes, people living in tents b/c they lost their homes, people without jobs. Even though we both have shitty jobs with no future in them (i work at starbucks), at least we have jobs, and it could be a lot worse.
My buddy graduated with a good degree, i think it was in math, and is working for a big university here, making less than i am.
You're studying for the CSCS, and i'm studying for NASM right now. I think as long as you're working on bettering yourself, and not just sitting in a dead end job, then you're alright.
sorry to rant.

Have not seen any tech writer jobs, unless they're in a different category than where I have been looking. I honestly didn't know what a tech writer was, so I had to go look it up. I'll start looking specifically for those too.
Hell, at this point, a response back to a job application would be nice. I think there's a monster in Career Builder and other sites that eats my applications.

No, I know I've got it good, relatively speaking, but at the same time, it's like there could be so much more, and that there was supposed to be so much more. Like I said earlier, it's the going from being ahead of the game to being behind the eight ball is the worst part. And it's not because I was a lazy fuck.
And hell, life can't be awesome all the time, because then the awesome times wouldn't be as good, right?

Once again loving the progress I'm making. It's probably going to come to an end soon, but I might as well enjoy the consistent increases while they last.

There is a saying that your highest highs are in proportion to your lowest lows. I have to say that from my experience this is true. The saddest people I know are those whose life goes neither high nor low.
Send your resume to me if you want to have a look at it. I have been a hiring manager for the past many years and have looked at literally hundreds of resumes. I can perhaps spiff up what you got of help you become a heard voice. kfisherx at hotmail
Also do searches that are looking for interns and new college grads. Intel goes out and scouts for NCGs.
One of the shocking things about searching for jobs is the sheer number of resumes that you have to send out. I can generally get a job within 4 weeks with some effort but I send out 50 or more resumes a week. All over the world. I try to not limit my career to whatever my perceptions or current paradigms are. This way I get to do interviews all over the place and I get to meet people and network. Most of the time the jobs I take come from an interview for a different job that did not really fit me but one of the hiring managers knew another fit. Really, the whole networking thing cannot be stressed enough.
You have a world of possible networking opps right here. Compose that email and send it out to all the people you know (including all the Summit people) Tell them what you are looking for, send your resume and aks for suggestions. Jobs came to people but people have to reach for careers. It's a different mentality completely.

Good workout here, except for the split squats. Can't complain about increases on three exercises, though. Felt some pressure/stress in my right ACL on the last set. Not good. I'm not going to force the issue until I'm comfortable there. The last thing I need to do is blow out a knee.
Was going to do hip thrusts as a fourth set in the final superset, but the ornery old fat guy who only does tricep extensions (with his lifting gloves on) decided that he was going to sit on one of the benches I had arranged to use between his sets. It wasn't worth the fun.
Ran 3.5 miles at a pretty good pace Sunday morning--and passed a hot 20something girl when I was almost done. Wish I saw her more often...--and will probably try to make it six miles tomorrow. Throw in a couple more runs after that and a four day or so taper to next Friday, and I'll be as good to go as I can hope to be.
I imagine that I'll make next week some sort of a back off week, but I don't like my chances of getting three workouts in this week anyway. Off again tomorrow (today was a perfect day both in terms of weather and activities) but my workweek goes Wed-Sun and I don't know how much time I will have.

You can always increase your distance by running until you see the hot girl again and then stalking - um, I mean following - her while she finishes her run...

that's brilliant
"why'd that dude make a u-turn as soon as he passed me?????"

I am excited because I think the changes we make will make a BIG difference in the results you are seeing. We still have several rounds of edits to go but we are much closer now to having a resume that stands out in the crowd and will ultimately lead you to a career. Yay for careers.
BTW: You look really good in the pic (holding the beer). You look like you are actually doing some good recomping. Just keep on keeping on.

Sorry for teh stoopid question, but what does the red in ppl's logs mean? Increase in weight? Also, what does PR mean?
Be interesting to see if the hottie starts running more often when you do...
PR = Personal Record - usually designates a personal best in weight lifted or number of reps lifted. Red is used to indicate a PR has been attained. Except maybe here in this log.

Thanks for the compliment and the help. I'll email you back tonight. Have actually been kinda busy and am at work now, and I don't know if I want to sit here at this job working on the resume...

Hey now, I was using red before everyone else was. So therefore I'm a trendsetter and everyone else is a loser.
I just use it to delineate my workout from other stuff, and I've gone so many different directions that I really don't know what my PRs are. I know I've deadlifted 405 and benched 225 twice, but those were almost two years ago.

Not a great workout as it was a bit of a struggle. That's to be expected because that time off coming up is going to be needed. The next workout may happen anytime from Friday to Monday. I have no idea what the schedule will hold.
I do know, however, that if I get to go meet someone who I've been dreaming of meeting since I was 12 this afternoon, then life will be very very very very very good.
Hopefully the coin flip goes in my favor. Cross your fingers.
ETA: Forgot to note that I ran six miles yesterday. Did pretty well, and I think I can safely pronounce my body able to handle my three legs of the race.

Secondly, boys look dumb when they're all frowny in their pics. If life is really that bad, let's NOT document it!!
Sending hugs to turn that frown upside down!
Thanks!
I was actually nervous in that picture as I was waiting for the Missouri game to start. Quite sad.
Everything happens at once apparently, and if the events of the last 24 hours are a good indication, it's going to be a damn good next 10 days. We'll see.
It would be even better if the damn media center would remember that it's not supposed to be the Arctic Circle. It's gotta be 60 in here (and it's 60 outside)
