LOL at surfing on JPs at work. I do that too. My job is such that I am in meetings on the phone almost all day. When there is a topic that doesn't apply I can sort of zone out a bit but keep one ear on the meeting in case there is something that pops up. It works out nicely for surfing at work. LOL!
It sounds almost like you could write a script for the series "The Office" given your characters. I am sure Intel has these sorts too but it is very rare that you see any of the behaviours you are talking about. The company is soooo big and so goverened by the culture that everyone just sort of all behaves in one manner after awhile. It is weird but also makes the company very functional.

I actually have time to do that now at work. The last month, not so much.

Do you know of a good, comprehensive history of the Church? I had some questiosn come up as I was reading Deuteronomy tonight and I realized that some of my thoughts maybe based on assumptions.

Well one thing I've heard or read along the way, is that the RC integrated local customs into the ritual to help spread the Church.
It would be good to have just a good overview of the RC and the Reformation so I'm a little bit more situated in overall "Church" history.

And Paula, congrats. Many people don't ever realize that the way they read something has a lot to do with their own preconceived notions. I don't know that we'll ever really be able to stop reading through our own glasses, but the humbleness that it takes to admit you might have your own prejudices opens up your heart to many more possibilities.

There's so much great thinking and questioning there that I don't quite know how to put all this. So I'll try to do it without overwhelming you.
Just as we come at these topics with our own backgrounds, lenses, and even prejudices, the historians have their own as well. So in a sense there's no such thing as an objective history. The "official" version of history usually goes to the winner of a battle, the society that survives, or the old writing that happens to be the one found by archaeologists.
Even so, you want to learn more about it anyway, just as I enjoy doing. There's no such thing as wasted reading in the search for truth, IMO. For a quick listing of ideas:
Karen Armstrong's History of the Bible -- it's about how some letters/books were made into canon, giving us the bible we have today. It touches on many of the things you may be interested in, such as how the church not only shapes culture, but is shaped by culture. You will get a glimpse of how everything changed once Constantine gave Christianity the stamp of the empire.
Eusebius' writings -- he lived 3rd or 4th century (can't quite remember) and has wonderful detail of what the church looked like then. Pretty interesting that neither Catholic nor Protestant practices today would be familiar to him. The Orthodox church is probably the closest.
The sometimes-frustating reality of all this, the more that I read, is that absolutely nothing is as simple as I'd like it to be. When I say "Reformation", some people may think of the 16th century events and people like Luther or Calvin. But the roots of Reformation started hundreds of years earlier, shaped again by society (humanism from the Renaissance was one driver).
And the Reformation was different in Spain that in Eastern Europe, and different again in England. It wasn't one event.
Which brings me back to my original question of what you meant by the "church". Even in the 1st Century it wasn't one uniform group -- the New Testament and Paul's letters show that clearly enough. Each local group had its own identity, its own personality and its own challenges. Eventually a theme begins to emerge, that somehow beyond all the differences, God has claimed it all as his own.

At this point its reading for learning so I can situate myself a little better. I totally forgot about the Orthodox Church.

Actually it's not the Catholic Edition although I do have one of those at home as well (I have a number of Bibles actually).
My Mother gave me a Bible that Riverside World printed (Riverside was a big business in my home town) called God's Word - which is a common useage Bible (You are not going to find the "Thees and the Thous" present in the KJV). They had a number of scholars work on the translation from the original texts that they have. This is the Bible I am using.
http://www.bible-researcher.com/godsword.html - which according to this particular article is not a particularly good translation of the Bible. But it is accessible for someone reading it the first time all the way through. I should probably pick up a Study Bible in the near future.

Hey, lots of good news and positive stuff happening in here! Congrats on all the work recognition, family stuff, and good workouts! Hope the kids are all feeling better finally. I have a couple sickies myself, but nothing so bad as you guys had to muddle through.
Note self: when you're over at a friend's house, and they pull a tub of ice cream out of the freezer, the same tub I bought them months ago but sat uneaten because they're "not ice cream people".... DON'T EAT IT!
2nd note to self: after 12 hours of stomach trouble, try not to sneeze. It like, flexes ab muscles. Wow.

Back at work today -- the stomach troubles are over and I'm slowly eating and regaining some strength.
Brain is fuzzy, though. Sorta embarassing that after several minutes of negotiating contract terms with a bank CEO, I had to backtrack and ask him to repeat a couple of things. Luckily we've built up a good rapport over the past few weeks, so he was able to laugh it off.
Tomorrow is the first "Director's Meeting" under the new company prez. The whole thing is making me lawl, for multiple reasons:
1) The meeting's title is a misnomer. I'm not a Director, even though I'm responsible for millions of dollars in annual revenue and I have two direct reports. Meanwhile, three Directors in the company, with virtually no responsibility and no direct reports, will not be there.
2) The agenda was supposed to be sent out yesterday. Still haven't seen it. Nice organization.
3) I'm guessing the main topic might be the fact that our revenue is down 30% in January/February, and right now March is looking even worse. Cuts will be coming soon, no doubt.
Back to my fuzzy phone calls.

Confession time. When I reveal that even a tall, athletic, witty spiritualist has his kryptonite.
I've been struggling with my old agoraphobia most of the day today. Haven't had an episode in years, but it was back today. I know there's a lot going on right now (baby, work pressures and pending layoffs, economy in general, upcoming sermon, etc...) and something appears to have tipped the scale.
Going to see how the next few days go. I'm not above going to a doc and getting some anti-anxiety meds if I need to.
This is something I've battled since I was a child. It robbed me of many good times in my high school and college years, and I don't want to get in that cycle again. I've written about it before and it seemed to shock people, because apparently I don't seem like the kind of guy who could become so racked by panic attacks that he hides in his room all day. But I am. And there've been times in the past when I was perilously close to that kind of lifestyle.
Right now I'm nowhere near that level, and I'll be using everything at my disposal to keep it from going there.
And honestly, tomorrow I might wake up and be fine. This is weird like that. Just have to see what the day holds!

The good news: I'm 90% back to myself today. No major attacks and feeling pretty good about things.
The bad news: There was an audible "crunch" sound when I bit the inside of my lip while chewing a fajita a few minutes ago. Still bleeding. My self-injury capability still trails Deserve's, but if he can quit beating the crap out of himself for a few days I might catch him.
