If someone was unused to rolling (on ball or foam roller) but has had massages in the past, what would you suggest starting with - a tennis ball or a foam roller? (or both? no idea if it's either or proposition).
I agree with Aoife- both. The roller is like the broad massage stroke and the ball is like when the masseuse gets in deep with a thumb or elbow.
I did Jane! Thank you ... I had a crazy busy end of last week through yesterday ... today really!! Thanks for your help!

Well, still feeling like shit. I can't seem to recover from this bronchitis that I had 6 weeks ago. Met my new primary doctor yesterday ... she's a functional medicine practitioner (yay) and is having me eliminate all dairy from my diet Boo hoo. I AM allergic to milk (from allergy testing years ago) but usually eat cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese all without apparent symptoms. She thinks this is what is dragging me down ... something about the Krebs cycle and some missing something or other that helps break down something that gets turned into energy. By removing the offending food items, the Krebs cycle runs smoothly and voila! more energy. She's also upping some of my supplements (fish oil, vitamin c, magnesium, etc.). Whatever ... I'm willing to do anything to get feeling better. This was a tough winter on my health ...
I've been eating fairly well ... and walking nearly every day with the dog. Resistance training a few times per week. Some yoga and stretching. I get short of breath really easily because of the asthma flare-up and I'm taking crazy amounts of my rescue inhaler. It sucks. But I haven't gained ... I'm maintaining so that's a good thing I suppose. We'll see what this dairy drop does. I do eat a lot of cheese and yogurt.
Michaela's class has an Earth Day hike today (since they have vacation next week when it is actually Earth Day). I'm a hike leader so it should be fun. Matt and Hayley are coming too! And it's not supposed to rain today!! Yay!!

You guys are soo cute in your avi!! Happy Easter a little late!
I'm so impressed that you find time to exercise. I do LOTS of movement, just taking care of things around the house, but I can't seem to find time to do strength training. Maybe today will be different?
Hope the dairy thing works out for you...that's a huge adjustment.
So at this point you're mainly eating meat and veggies? Well, it could be worse, I spoze. You could be vegetarian and only be eating broccoli and snow peas at this point.
So no wheat OR dairy? Bummer. I would be able to cope without wheat for the most part...but I really love dairy these days. I really hope you can get this health stuff figured out though. You've had a rough couple of Winters health-wise!

Enjoy your hike! Sounds like a blast!
Exercise with the little ones has only recently gotten easier. They can both either walk or bike ride the 1 mile loop where we walk the dog. And they will usually play for 30-45 minutes so I can workout. Walking longer like on the treadmill is harder, and I usually end up doing that after they go to bed. I also am lucky because when I teach my class, I usually jump in for a good part of it, mostly demonstrating certain things and such so I get some strength stuff in then.

Ha! I just hope she doesn't eliminate other things like nightshade veggies (eggplant and tomato) ... legumes ... and other potential allergens. That would totally suck.

I love dairy too ... especially cheese. I could literally live on cheese. Two days without and so far I would have to say that I think I feel better. We'll see as the week wears on!!

Matt dislocated his knee last Friday ... and tonight we found out that he has an ACL tear (original tear in 1983 with surgery in 1984 and 1986) and a bucket-handle meniscal tear. Not good. We are looking at surgery in the near future. Should make this summer interesting to say the least. Bah.

Sorry to hear that Julie. I'm with the others, I'm not a huge dairy fan (upsets me a bit) but I'd have a hard time giving up a little cheese now and then. Hopefully though she's got you on the right track.
Sorry about that dislocated knee for Matt. That is going to suck really badly this summer.
As for dairy.. I'm loving it, but it doesn't love me back. The allergy shows with almost instant nasal drip and prolonged use leads to eczema around the mouth as well as cracked heels (very painful). yet, am living dangerously by indulging on it about once or twice a week.
Wheat or rather gluten as it also includes rye & barley is not really hard to do w/o. Abstaining from legumes OTOH does really suck.. pb is the biggest challenge (funny, pb isn't as bad as actual peanuts, so smooth pb isn't as bad as crunchy pb) and cashews are totally out...soy is iffy too, with soy sauce and soy lecithine as things to avoid.
Yet, again, it's not all that hard when preparing your own foods. It's eating out or having ready made meals which is a bitch..
Just think of what you CAN eat rather than what you can't .. and once in a while just don't give a damn and take a banned treat
Oh.. every time I come in your log I feel bad about not doing much foam rolling
Thanks for all the well-wishes. Yes, it will likely be a rather sucky summer ... he won't be able to ski (which means I'll get to do it more ) and yardwork will even be difficult. He probably won't be able to work construction ...
I have a new job starting later this month though ... doing chart reviews/audits for workers compensation insurance companies. Pay is outstanding ... when I get efficient it will be nearly 2.5 times what I make now in patient care. Plus I will be working from home. No more weekends. More flexibility. I can work from New Hampshire (all I need is a high-speed internet connection and a functioning telephone). I'm totally psyched. So after the end of June, no more weekends. Did I mention that I won't have to work weekends any more?!
We see Matt's orthopedist tomorrow ... I imagine we'll be scheduling surgery. Unfortunately, if he can't do it this week, I'm going to push to hold off until after Memorial Day. I don't want to leave Matt home alone for three days while I'm at the summit freshly post-op with two small children. Then we go camping at the beach Memorial Day weekend. So the last week in May looks like the deal. It will be okay ... he'll get a few weeks worth of therapy in to get his range of motion back and get his quads functioning again before surgery.
Been doing some yoga ... and walking. I might break out the TRX today for a small circuit. Eats have been ... eh. Maintaining even though I'm eating a lot, so that is good I guess. Fat loss has become much less of a priority these past few months ... so don't be surprised when you see me at the summit!!!

Sorry to hear about the knee....but it sounds like you have it under control...he's in good hands no doubt! Congrats on the new job! And super YAY about working from home!!!
The new job sounds great! My DH picked up something similar (chart reviews) to moonlight for extra cash - it helps pay for our son's growth hormone treatment...
I hope the surgery can be scheduled at a good time... and I can't wait to meet you (and RW and everyone else) at the Summit!!!!!!!!!
