I will make sure that you get plenty of warning so that you can free up your schedule for the game. How cool will it be to play in LA?

I am optimistic. Oct 14th is when we evaluate for surgery. Keep your fingers crossed that the cast is holding.

I am so proud of myself. My stated plan (approved by Alan of course) for training is Football practice, 2 rest days (1 active recovery), Upper HEAVY, Lower HEAVY, rest day, Upper light (repeat). I felt ultra good about the practice and decided to go do my upper workout after just one day of rest. I get to the gym, change out and hit the weights. By the end of the second exercise I had to admit that I just did not have it. I was weak and wasn't feeling it. So I made the decision to bag the workout, go home and go to bed. I totally listened to my body and went home.

Tonight I went back to the gym to do upper heavy and KICKED ASS! PRs all over the place. I felt it and my body was responding happily to the weights. The only thing that held me up even a little was the grip on my hand with the broken finger. I forgot my straps tonight.

I am so happy right now. This girl is starting to finally get it. I can feel when I need to rest. Things will never be the same in this log. That is for sure!

Oh yeah and just because I think this is freak'n awesome

Kate, it was a whirlwind trip--didn't end up seeing anyone except family.

And Karla--Yay! Although we will check in regularly to make sure you are being a good girl.

We don't suit up with full pads until Jan so no pics 'til then. I do have a cool team practice shirt though and the team photographer is going to be at our practice this week. I'll link to the pics when they get posted.

As far as body comp... I will tell you that I am 5lbs up (scale weight) from when I first started carbing up and I look AWESOME right now. Definately HUGE body comp changes since starting with Alan last year. He pisses me off sometimes because I want to do different things than he advises and we made a few mistakes.... Looking back, I cannot dispute that his plan is working for me overall in a way that I would not have been able to do on my own.

My baby belly fat is finally going away. (after 30 years folks) I'm serious. There is loose skin folds and stretch marks but the actual fat is almost not there in comparison to before. I can tuck in shirts if I want now. I am going to start interviewing Drs to potentially do something about the loose skin thing. I think that is a gift that every Mom should give herself at some point in time.

Back to football!!!

Hell week is in Feb. The coach said that for hell week the test for us will be

1 mile run
50 burpies
50 up/downs
100 yard bear crawl (this I don't know what it is)
100 yard crab walk
50 push ups
50 sit ups
and some manners of timed sprints....

All this in one practice btw. He says he will provide puke buckets and cautioned us not to drink milk.

After that test it is game time!

Both are walking on all fours. Bear crawl is with back facing toward the sky. Crab walk is with chest facing toward the sky.

Neither is a fast way to move, nor are they actually that difficult in short distances. But have fun with 100 yards!

sigh... I swear I need teh bubblz rap.

I was getting my cast changed today as the swelling went down and my old cast was slipping. As I was waiting for the therapist to call me back to the casting room, I decided to use the restroom. To my horror I saw blood again. So got the cast then ran to the Dr. It was confirmed as blood and I am back on Cipro. He started to fuss at me for waiting so long but he and I just had this discusion RE the finger. He finally just shook his head and said, "This is simply not good". Doooop.

I started the meds and then started my leg workout. I stopped after 2 exercises as I simply am not recovered from practice on Sunday. Let's see... Broken finger, bladder infection, not recovering... I think it is safe to say this is not my month for great health. I am in week 8 of my exercise cycle and am taking this one as a rest week while I battle the infection in me and get used to the sprinting in football practice.

Sheesh...

Sorry. Maybe not really for bladder infection but if the infection involved the girly parts, apart from cranberry juice/extract you might also try FemDophilus .

IF the infection is caused by ciprofloxacin responsive bacteria, ciprofloxacin will be just fine
Of course Espi's supps are also good for you, but that is more for trying to prevent infections than for curing them. If you are prone to infections, try supps when you are off the antibiotics.

Its too bad, when something like that is interfering.Your last training report looked so damn good, even with the finger stuff in between. But if you really "got it" now,I expect things to be allright pretty soon again.

BTW who is Alan? It seems more people know him, but I don't

Cranberry can work curative too, but they are only very mildly active.. when you've got a raging infection, it's too late & antibiotics are the best way to solve it. But too keep your 'bladder in tiptop condition' , cranberries & probiotics are good.

MissDL: Alan is Alan Aragon, a very smart nutritionist.. many speak highly of him.

I loved playing defense. I was so much better at it. Maybe because I have awful ball skills. But, I could roam around on defense and break up plays. Defense is awesome! It's so much more instinctual, and guys like me who weren't super strong or fast could actually outperform more athletic people by being able to read and anticipate whats going to happen.

This can of course be a benefit and a curse when playing football. You won't be likely to come out of a game for a bruised hip, but you could also hurt yourself and not be aware of it until much later. Be careful.

This really seems to be part of the no-pain and unawareness of injury thing. I work with people who often can't tell me when they are injured or ill and it's part of my job to look for possible symptoms, but even then most of them have normal pain sensitivity to give me clues. It strikes me that in an odd way you are in the same position of having to observe yourself from the outside and monitor yourself only with an extra layer of difficulty. The fact that you feel some kinds of pain may actually make it harder for you because if a kind of pain you can feel goes away there can still be damage you are not sensing because you don't register the kind of pain it causes (or doesn't cause in your case) and you think you are better before you are.

All I can think of is starting to brainstorm a checklist of things you can observe from the outside and adding that to your daily routine. I'm not sure what should be on the list but I can think of places to start. There are people who literally feel no physical pain at all for genetic reasons. I'm guessing they and their families have evolved strategies for monitoring their health. Also many animals (including some of our pets) mask their pain much more than humans do, so vets must have ways of looking for injury other than indications of pain.

Thanks for the pointer. So far nothing else affected... That I know of anyway.... Of course I wouldn't feel it 'til it fell off it it was.

I am actually feeling pretty positive. I was pretty screwed up this July and am just coming back from the multiple injuries and overtraining that I did then. Add to that the new training rituals and the broken finger and now infection and I feel pretty good that I am as strong as I am. LOL! It is not week 8 of my training cycle and I am going to implement my rest week. Yes, it is a week early but I think it makes sense given the cipro and the fact that I am not recovering from football practices.

This is how I feel right now too. I am faster in the mind than I am in the body and faster in the mind than most. This gives me a HUGE advantage as a defensive player. And the feeling of making that tackle... Oh man. Hard to beat that! Of course it is all very early so we'll see. I just sort of know where I feel like I fit.

On the "getting hurt" side it was agreed upon last week that David be the team trainer. So he will fly with us to games and is THE person we go to for injuries, wraps, etc. Nobody knows my "no pain" thing better than David and so I feel like I have someone out there watching me a little. It was cool how it all happened. He came with me to the tryout because he knew how much it meant to me and I had no prep. So he was coaching me on each test. Then he go so inspired by being there that he asked if he could help out. With his background in PT and degees/experience he was a natural fit.

As this problem shows up more and more, I am more starting to understand some things about being careful. Thus is the reason I started "New Rules of Lifting for Karla" awhile ago and why I am going on rest week even a week early. Thus is why I always check my urine for blood now.... These are all new paradigms for me but will ultimately save my ass in these middle aged years.

This chick puts the dudes to shame. In the past 24 hours her log has included football, broken bones and pissing blood.

It's like a Jason Statham movie, but with boobies.

Notice how I went right away to the Dr this time instead of trying to drink the infection away.

I read this at my desk on Friday and howled laughing.

This has been one of the most challenging months for me in a long, long while. I find that nearly every day I am faced with a "fear or doubt" that challenges my confidence until I step up to face it. The football is a big portion of it but also at work there is a major reorg going on and I am going to def be affected in some way. Add to that my inability to do the one thing that really keeps me sane (play my guitar) and then pile some more injuries on to make sure that my gym time is limited too. Whew!!!

What I am finding through all this though is a new and wonderful sense of confidence and peace. With the football, as soon as I broke my finger, my friends were encouraging me to quit. They all told me it was a "sign". Then I received an email from another dear friend in CA who told me that it seems whenever she ventures out to chase a dream she is met with some barrier right away. She is catholic and calls it the "devil" but she told me to think of it in terms of negative energies being drawn to the most powerful energies. She encouraged me to not give in and to keep chasing my dreams.

As the football practices happen I am learning that I can do it by facing fears. Yesterday I faced fears in agility drills. When I was a young person I could throw myself on the ground from a full out run. Now I have thinking to do to throw myself on the ground. Yesterday we did a drill where we had to throw ourselves on the ground and roll under our partner (as they jump over us) then get up and leap over the person who has just rolled under you. It turned out I could leap and roll without any issues at all. In fact our little group got high kudos from the coach... As for me... IT WAS FUN!!! I honestly wanted to do it again. During the plays I am getting hit and taking it just fine. We are not in pads yet so nothing too serious but I am doing just fine for now despite being a bit older.

Yesterday I played Corner Back and I really enjoyed the position. On the first couple of plays the receivers kept getting around me. I felt like I was probably just too old to catch these young, fast hotshots. The defense coach came over to me and adjusted my position so I was only 7 yards from my receiver instead of 20 or more and after that I RULED the zone. Nobody got any yards. So my fear of being too old was once again unfounded.

At work I know that my current job is changing. It is moving to a differnt group. While that saddens me, I also am excited to see what new adventures lie ahead. A lot of people tend to freak out about reorgs and layoffs but I generally see them as a good thing. I have never been laid-off or reassinged to where it did not grow me in some way. It is challenging but still it grows you. This one is especially good for me because as soon as I put the word out that I am looking around for new opps, the phone started rining. The market is hot right now and in the high tech industry Sep is the best time to start a new job. I will likely find something within Intel but am open to other things if they are exceptional. For now I have several upcoming interviews and am pretty excited. A lot of people are looking out for me and that feels awesome.

Another big work challenge is that I have a big Cert coming up next month that I must pass. I have been avoiding this for a long while because I just did not want to take the time out of my life to study. Now with a broken finger and guitar practice severly limited, I find I can do it. So I went forwards and scheduled the test for next month along with a study camp week. Because of the reorgs it is easy to find the time and the funding (managers are all feeling guilty and sign-off on everything) to do these sorts of thing. It is in the times of trouble that some of the greatest opportunities exist.

So with luck by X-mas month I will have a new job at Intel, a cert and a definate position on the first string on my football team. My finger will be healed and I will be facing more challenges and growing ever stronger and better as an athlete, a professional and a person!

So at work today we got distracted on youtube watching all of our company's "Tomorrow" campaign commercials. They are actually pretty funny to us because the commercials make fun of our culture (which is pretty unique and geeky). The one that really stood out for our group today was this one.

We all just roared laughing at this one. It sooooo has happened to all of us on one side of the joke or the other. There is another one (I could not find it) that took a close second where there is a company party and the cake is decorated like an Intel processor. Two engineers are standing over the cake discussing the best place to cut into it and they are holding up the line. Finally someone in the line gets frustrated and just cuts off a corner of the cake much to the dismay of the two who were analyzing the best place to cut it. I think that one said, "Our parties aren't like your parties" Again this one hit SOOOO close to home.

Rest week is going swimingly well. Finally the quads feel recovered and I feel pretty wonderful all over actually except for the finger. That thing is really hurting lately. I see the "slice-em-up" Dr tomorrow. I have all my other fingers crossed.

These are in heavy rotation around here. I think of you every time I see one.

Thanks Fang!! Yeah that is the one I was talking about. The only thing that would make these commercials more real is if the actors wore blue jeans (usually torn up) and T-shirts. LOL! I remember the first day I entered this giant "think tank". I looked at my friend (his first day too) and said, "Dude..." "Everyone looks alike" He replied with, "Know that that means?" I told him I did not. He said, "We look like them"

HA HA

I am fully into the culture now though and will miss it when I leave. I have always worked in geeky little groups in this industry but never at a place where there are so many absolutely brilliant minds. You have to stay mentally alert all day long here because there is always someone smarter than you in any meeting. And if you are the smart guy there are always a bunch of engineers looking to break your code and algorithms. I did it one time on a group I was in and it was awesome (broke the code at a very low level!) And I have had my work broken down. You are making better quality products while breaking stuff and rebuilding it and inventing new ways of looking at things. LOVE ALL OF IT!

Just got back from the surgeon. Good news! No surgery and the cast I have is holding. BUT I do have to have my cast fortified if I want to continue to play ball (he advised against it but... IF I had to) LOL! I get the cast removed on the 11th of Nov!

Oh yeah and he gave me this double strength vicodin to allow me to sleep at night as I have been waking up with a lot in pain. I asked him how come I had pain and he responded with I should've had pain since the first day. He said that pain is a weird thing.

Yes to no surgery! That's terrific news.

Sigh.... I am high as a kite right now on legal drugs.... When I went to get my cast fortified the therapist gasped when my old cast came off. Under the cast was this amazing bruising and blood. Apparently there was a pressure point on top of where my bone is broken. He said he hasn't seen a cast do this much damage before. Apparently people come into the place and complain long before this much damage is done. So....he fussed at me for some time for not complaining.... I swear I did not know. I told everyone and even made a post about it on the "sickie" folder. I was perplexed as to why I had pain after the cast when I had none before too. Now I know... Dooop. No wonder I have been awake at night in pain. This is gnarly looking.

Irony wins here. The therapist said he is surprised it wasn't infected and looked pretty clean. I told him I had just finished up a prescription of Cipro for a bladder infection. Turned out that was a good thing and great timing. Another good thing is that I no longer had as much pain almost immediately so I think I will be able to sleep from now on even without the drugs.

Bad thing is that I am in a splint now that isn't as strong to allow the wound to air. No catching or agility drills this weekend. Next week we put a cast over this splint and that will allow me to play more seriously. Only 4 more weeks to go!
