It's true the work is pretty intense but it is also work I have always been able to do before. It perplexes me that I am so fucking weak right now. I don't know why it perplexes me but it does... It's one thing to say it and another to experience I guess....

Roland's "keep it simple" post I guess doesn't really apply to me either. Eat less, move more doesn't really work so well for the already lean.

Much as I have uber respect for Alan when I read that I pretty much immediately concluded that the city boy doesn't have too much farm experience. It would be interesting to see your total burns on these devices. Does Alan rent Bodybugg's or GWF or put them on clients periodically? I too would be curious to see what it registered for you over the course of a week with all your activity.

HA HA HA.... I am laughing because David called Alan the "Mr. Urban Trainer" last night. Said he guessed that the boy had a postage stamp yard in some suburb and equated that somehow to what I was doing. It made me giggle.

On a more serious note I don't think that Alan needs to have me put on a GWF per say. He watches me pretty closely wrt scale weight and lifts (gym performance) every day. He also hears how I feel every day. I would think those indicators might tell him pretty much all he needs to know about burn rates. I mean, he hit my cals so far dead on for my goals. With the exception of these weird crazy work days, I am doing pretty well.

Let's face it... I need to be more careful. I spent over 10 hours each day outside over the three days. I calculated that about 6 -7 hours each day of that was in serious physical work. If you think about it, that is no different than me running 3 consecutive days of marathons (just on an hour by hour basis). The more I think about this, the more dumbass I feel. I actually am hoping that Alan comes back and says that this is all just theory and speculation and that I am doing something else wrong instead... Or better yet that there is some magic pill for me to take or some such thing.

On another much HAPPIER note. I just ate a HUGE plate of Pad Thai. Blew all my carbs in one shot. I am a bloated and happy sumbitch right now.

I popped over to caloriesperhour and picked some random farm/forestry chores + a couple more familiar and ran for a 125 lb person. I think this site uses METS and then derives out the burn. Here are the interesting numbers.

Totals: 2,467 calories in 7 hr

Bicycling - 12-13.9 mph (moderate)
454 calories in 1 hr
Gardening - general
227 calories in 1 hr
Forestry Work - hoeing
283 calories in 1 hr
Farming - forking bales of hay
454 calories in 1 hr
Farming - grooming animals
340 calories in 1 hr
Farming - cleaning barn, vigorous
454 calories in 1 hr
Animal Care - feeding large farm animals
255 calories in 1 hr

I think the problem is that physical labour can mean different things to different people. Here, I do what I call gentle gardening. Even the occasional big job isn't that bad. The last house we lived in had a huge lot, with a steep hill behind the house. Small jobs were harder as you were lifting and carrying things up and down a slope. The tasks were the same. I have relatives that own a small farm. However, they do very few really physical tasks. They don't have animals so it's jump on the tractor, plow the field... then pay someone else for the harder stuff.

Yet, I have a friend who lives in a rural setting - she built a frigging waterfall a couple of years back. However, if you ask her what she does on the property she'd probably just say a little light gardening. It's so much harder to define the day to day activities.

Anyway, hope you really are taking it easier and doing a little relaxing.

I've noticed that you really like the word "per say"......I see some people get "hooked" on a word and use it more frequently than the average person. Since you use it so much on the forum, I'm guessing that you probably use it a lot in your professional life, too. So.......I'm hoping you'll be happy for the correction....but, it's per se.

Interesting thing I note here is that biking and instense farm work are equal. So it isn't just David's opinion that it warrants feeding. Alan wrote back and told me to hire out the farm work and to add a de-load. He is also dropping my weekly calorie intake so that I don't miss my shoot goal.

I am sort of like your friend. I am very causual about the work that I do. I need to push all my trainers more in the beginning to understand that I really bust my ass out there. I keep forgetting that my work is relative to the other people they see all day....

Jane, thank you a million times for this! I actually do know that from school and just forgot about it. You brought it forward again and it will not be forgotten again for quite some time. Damn grammer checks should have that one built in.

Well I finally did it. I had an AWFUKIT day yesterday. I don't know what happened except that I am discouraged to be on another forced rest and pissed that I can't work like I normally do and I just did not feel like putting in the effort to eat. I sent in my daily report yesterday with 858 total calories eaten for the day. I have no excuse for it. I wish I did but I don't. Just said, "FUKIT" and that feeling got stronger as the day wore on. I am going to get the eating back again today though...

I went to a bodybuilding show last night. It was fun but also a bit unsettling. The women on the stage look pretty big. Noel keeps telling me they are not that big. He says it is the lighting and the tans, etc. Then he teased me again about my diet and that "Macro guy" that I have hired. It made me pretty uncomfortable for some reason last night. I think because I was insecure anyway. I avoided the subject with him.

I watched the bikini class and found it to be somewhat ridiculous. I can understand why they are doing it though. It will be a big money maker I bet. There were a couple of figure girls in the show who were pretty fat and one or two male bodybuilders as well. Other than those few though, the people came in pretty nicely. One of the guys from my gym was there and he asked me all about my program and when I am going to show. He was surprised that I did no cardio and said I was hella lean for a person that did no cardio. I told him I do my cardio in the kitchen. He asked me to let him know when my first show was and promised to be there for it. It was a bit of a weird night. Left me feeling good and bad.

Sorry about how you felt..

Now.. what is funny is that after the 'AWFUKIT" I really thought you were going to eat 3000+ kcal but of course not.. you still struggle with the food intake, even when tired and on a diet.. or maybe esp on a diet.
Resting will really be the best thing to do... for now the goal is to keep lowering bf%. Maybe after the shoot you'll be fed up with the process and aim for strenght & muscle gains? (wishful thinking here?)

On a different note: was wondering about the per say too but thought it might be an American way of writing it. What a lot of people here do is write it together and add a stress to it: persé . Just looked it up in the Dutch dictionary and it's only per se there too..

I get it from both sides actually. I crave carbs somemtimes now and I have an inclincation to just not eat. If given the choice I still prefer to not bother with eating. It's just easier to not eat than to eat especially if you have to do all the accounting....

My goal is to be back on plan before Alan has a chance to respond to this one slip...

Just checking in, Karla. I read your log all the time, but I don't feel like I have much to offer to your situation.

I did *just* use per se in my own log, and even as an English teacher (I would not likely use this term with 7th and 8th graders), I had to check it twice.

Yet, he won't contact me? This is annoying as shit. If he has any issues, give him my cell phone number and have him call me. Or give me his number, and I'll call him... I realize that I suggested this before, but I'm pretty sure he declined. Is he afraid to talk to a rational person? There's no reason on Earth why you should be dealing with the stress of conflicting messages.

Multiple streams of conflicting advice = not optimal. I knew it would add an element of stress from the start, and have been doing my best to tolerate it, but now the snags of that setup are really beginning to manifest. I don't like to see you go through the emotional struggles involved with this, Karla. It's like everyone seems to be ignoring the fact that you're injured, yet they're putting pressure on you to get contest cut (somehow). I hope you see the conflict here, and I hope others see it too. I know it's weird for me to be posting this here, but I only want the best for you, Karla. I also want folks to know that I'm willing to communicate with the rest of your team of handlers. If they check your log -- hey guys, call me.

Meantime, check your email Karla. You bra, you.

Karla you know Alan's advice is solid and you will be ok. I'm sorry the forced rest is driving you crazy. Would it help to focus some of that unused energy into stuff like classical guitar? As for Noel, I don't know him but most people don't tease about an issue they know the person is insecure about. So if he is teasing you, he probably thinks you are doing just fine.

Mmm, I guess that's really a too-talky way of saying hang in there & here's a hug if you need it.

Guys.... I am not sure what to say or how to respond right now. I obviously have some things to correct and to think about. I last posted on Sunday to my log. On that day I did not yet realize the extent of the injuries I had given to myself. I still am not sure that I know. I am pretty destroyed on all levels right now. I feel like the runner on the 25th mile of the marathon pulling up lame. I hit the final 12 weeks and went down. Way down... Emotionally I am completely wiped out. Physically I am healing.

I don't have much else to say on the matter but will be able to respond as I get the strength and insight to do so. Know that I am doing everything I can to get through each day... one day at a time... I am complying with my nutrition goals as well as my mandates to rest. I will adjust my goals, my dreams and my expectations as I get the clarity to do so.

Alan... I love you man for caring so much.

Dude, I'd be willing to bet that Karla's been one of your most consistent clients and you're her sole handler (and may God have mercy on your soul).

Wait a minute, is that how she got injured? By beating the crap out of herself?

Cuz I did that while walking through the airport last week. Tried to adjust my gradually-slipping computer bag by shrugging my left shoulder and moving my arm up real fast (shoulder-strap bag) and the strap snapped. With no resistance, my arm/hand continued upward at a high rate of speed and connected with my left eye.

So yeah, don't do that.

Stay AWAY from Noel!!!!
Therein lies a problem. I cannot stay away from Noel unless I stay away from BBing. Noel judges at all the local shows and we run into each other at intermissions. I actually like the guy as a person. Normally he and I have friendly banter about science versus bro-science. I generally feel fine about all of this. But sometimes I am insecure in myself and this show was one of those times. The sport of bbing is a very mentally challenging show as you may imagine and I felt both fat (not conditioned) as well as small (not trained) that night. No real big deal though. I just avoided the subject with him and moved on. Other times when people have given me a hard time, I have never stopped believing in my plan or following my plan. I think if you are going to be a bber that you have to grow a thick skin. My skin is new and not as thick as it needs to be just yet.

Mmm, I guess that's really a too-talky way of saying hang in there & here's a hug if you need it.
I cannot sit to play the guitar that much either right now. I have tweaked my whole upper body in a pretty horrible way somehow. Thanks for the hugs. The light at the end of the tunnel for me is that it does get better each day to some extent.

Alan , you take care of our big sister?
Minus this one "AWFUKIT" event I am pretty much on track. I figure staying the plan will only help my end game. Whatever that is...

Thanks girls and Greg too. I am spending a lot of time just laying around. I look all soft right now but am still vascular from being low bf%. I complained to David yesterday that I was all useless and soft and veiny... Of course we went right to the gutter with that one and stayed there for a long while. I attempted to workout but I am too jacked up still. David says I am to continue to stay on rest restriction until I have had a chance to visit the chiro. He suspects an out rib and at least one vertebrae.

Tom, I love you man. This is important for everyone to understand. Alan and I are both obviously disappointed about this recent event but know this on fact. I follow only one "handler" wrt training and diet. And I have been deadly consistent with his plan for me for a long while. David is a friend and trainer that I know I can trust to help me with rehab questions. (Obviously I need that) Noel will one day (if I ever get better again) be a posing coach. I won't start using Noel until about 3 months prior to my show though so he is not a handler for sure. David and I lift together and hang out together a lot so that is what it is. I still obey Alan and that is the most important part here.

A result of this whole recent chain of events is that David will soon talk to Alan (if they haven't already) and I am actually looking forward to that. I think that will be a win/win/win. David actually sort of understands my whole "I don't feel" thing.

You always make me smile RL! Thanks a million for dropping by... And where can I listen to your sermon?
