HA! No competition here...

When I saw the picture on the computer I nearly had second thoughts about posting it when I saw that your guns were bigger than mine!!! LOL! Seriously girl, you look marvelous!!!

(and bigger than me)

That actually explains it pretty well I think. Don't know why I didn't think of that before. It has been bothering me actually. It's as if I go out of my way to lie to people about how big I am. I find myself telling online friends all the time that I am little because I always feel (otherwise) that I am misrepresenting myself. Recently, in a conversation with Stingo, I told him I was little and his reply was, "but you're 5'5" I wasn't sure how to respond to that. I am sufficiently tall... Just tiny compared to my personality and/or stage presence. I guess that is why they say "Bigger than life" when referring to people on stage or in the public eye in one way or another.

Thanks for that thought. It helps clear up this little issue I have been having for a LONG time now...

I forgot about the energy thing. Yeah, definately NOT chill with respect to energy. LOL! Relaxed is a better word.

The only things I got going on for me as a bber are my shoulders and calves.

There are still two weeks left to get to the Summit. If you can swing the plane ticket, I will swing the room and your admission. Just PM me and we'll make it happen. I can think of nothing better for your new adventures in life as a personal trainer and besides you can write the whole thing off next year and the net cost to you will be nothing except your time. Think about it...

I posted an apology in your log RE the name thing. My sister is to blame for this.....

just got home from a very chill workout. Had an interesting day and just feel like sharing...

Work was slamming with meetings all day long. Still I managed to get in some really good work and have some fun on forums a little too.

Stayed at work late to wrap up a document that I need to use for an early meeting tomorrow. I left work about 7:15PM and when I got outside I saw my right rear tiire was flat. It has been since high school drivers ed class that I changed a tire. But it turned out I was actually able to do it pretty easily. turns out I ran over a nail. So I'll be at the tire shop sometime tomorrow for sure. I noticed that some kind soul put a note on my drivers side window to tell me that the tire was flat. (how sweet)

Then I went for my workout. Tonight was leg day. On Tuesday night I had done a pretty kick ass upper day. During my db presses, I actually tweaked my shoulder a bit. I dropped the left db and the right db (the tweaked one) just came down slowly to my chest. I was in the process of pulling it off me when this very cute East Indian guy pulled it off me. I was a bit pissed off that I did not finish my set but not so pissed that I did not recognize this cutie and appreciate the fact that he rescued me from the 55lb db. LOL!! Tonight he was in the gym again and we smiled at one another. So I have another bro friendship forming. (I love bro friendships)

But there was also another guy there that I did not ever recognize before. He is a big guy and definately a bro in this very bro gym. He actually approached me and made some small talk during one of my breaks. He asked me how long I have been doing this and if I liked it. I answered and then he told me that he saw me doing lat pull downs the other night. He said he was impressed. He said that I had built an amazingly awesome foundation with my lats and back and that I would do well as a bodybuilder. He thought I had good genetics for the sport. Wow that was a cool thing for him to say!! Really lifted my spirits given that I am a bit beat and sore and worried about my shoulder being potentially injured....

I am going to take it easy tomorrow night for my upper workout and then take the full weekend off except for yard work. Hopefully that will allow things to get better. Next week I will plan a chiro/accupunture day. All my joints are creaking and cracking right now....

Rest the shoulder - hope it's just a little tweak and turns into nothing!

I saw your comment about going to Muscle Beach and thought you might be interested in this:

http://www.amazon.com/Muscle-Beach-s...1195969&sr=1-1

It's about the original Muscle Beach, which was in Santa Monica, from the late 1940's to the late 1950's. Really interesting stuff, in particular about the female weightlifters, and has some crazy pictures of Pudgy Stockton's gym and homemade leg press machine. It's a quick, easy read.

Thanks G-friend from far away. Today it feels better so keeping fingers crossed. I also am experiencing a little relief in the shoulder girdle in general. I think a chiro/accupunture treatment next week will ink the deal for me.

David examined me today and said it is a bicipital tendon injury of some sort. This is a relief to me because it isn't one of the rotator cuff muscles.

Wow this looks like a fascinating book. Reading about this book made me pull out my "Pumping Iron" video tonight and re-watch it. Great flick.

Thanks Tom!

Rest day today and totally chill'n. Diet is on track though I messed up my macros a bit today. I am spending the day with David and he tells me that I am starting to come in (meaning look cut). He noticed a drastic change from last week in fact. I am also at 131.8 today so scale starting to budge just a tiny bit. As frustrating as it is to do it this slowlly, I really am coming in amazingly nice and keeping my bigness.

We weigh the same today, but I haven't had breakfast yet

What did David say about taking care of this bicipital tendon injury? Is this the catalyst for today's day of rest?

Friday night we had KABOOM storms so loud they woke me from my sleep. Never had that in your neck of the woods.

HA 130.6 today. Doooop. The whoosh fairy came today and I look fantastic! It is amazing what even 1 lb of bloat does to the appearance. Alan has allowed me to cut back my cals a tiny bit and lookie here. Weight loss still not a big problem. Now it will be a blancing game of keeping strength and dropping weight and making sure that I am not dropping LBM too much. Today I will make sure I eat pretty well. Perhaps even carb up.

I really miss thunder and light'n storms. I had those when I lived in NC all the time. David says to just chill and it should be fine in a few days. I can do raises, pulls and tricep work in the meanwhile. No pushing or curls. I am also hook'n up with the chiro/accupunturist this week. I think the combo will have me back in style!

You can have her g-friend. I can't be losing a lb a day anymore. That would be awful. I carbed up today so she will fly away. Perhaps in your direction?

I have been meaning to put this to paper for awhile now so that I can reference it now and then. I think this board is a good place for it because many of the members here suffer from Bromophobia. That is that they have these conceptions and ideas of what bbing is that doesn't really match what I am finding. I have spent the past year plus time studying the sport, hanging with IFBB judges, talking with some of the pros, working out with many of the local ammatures and trainers and am planning my first show in March of 2010. During that time I have discovered that this group of people largely doesn't deserve that bad rap that they get time and again. I am writing this to give perhaps a different perspective to the sport for those who have already seen the other side...

Bodybuilding for Bromophobics

1. A brotard does NOT equal a bodybuilder: Brotards are the little (sometimes big or fat but almost never conditioned) bastards you tend to see doing curls in the squat racks, lifting with shit for form (really heavy), never doing anything more than isolation exercises (usually upper) and other stupid and dangerous shit. Since many/most brotards like to think that they are bodybuilding (even though they will never show or even learn how to train, etc) it is often the case that people confuse the two. Another cause of confusion is that brotards often refer to each other as Bro, or Brah which is also the term used by bodybuilders.
2. Not all really big bbers use steroids or other forms of enhancements. If you hang aorund bbers for any amount of time you will ultimately run into a number of them who have 20 or more years of training. Many of these folks are naturals even though they seem quite beastly to your eyes. It is possible to add 1-5 lbs a year onto your physique doing natural bbing so be careful when judging people who are big. (I learned this the hard way in the past years)
3. Bodybuilders use functional training too!! (Please see point number 1 above about brotards versus bodybuilding). Every single bodybuilder that I know does squats, deads, pullups, etc just like all the people who love to sing the praises of functional exercises. (What you don't see bodybuilders doing is bosu ball training) The difference is that bodybuilders are concerned about body symmetry and will most always put isolation exercises into their training so that they can create a more perfect visual art. Usually the isolation work follows the big compound lifts. Think about it. What sort of functional training or compound lift in the world is going to bring up my calves or peak my biceps for the show I am training for?

Overall in my digging around, interviewing of people in this sport I am highly impressed. Yes, there is some good amount of "bro-science" in this sport but it is also pretty strong in the OLY, MMA, and other circles I have had the chance to play in. The fitness industry is filled with idiots and "bro-science". It really isn't saved for just the bbing crowd.

Hey Karla ... I'm all for yoga for many reasons ... physical stretching the muscles and improving joint mobility ... mentally learning to empty your mind ... learning to breathe deeply ... etc. When you don't have time to go to a class, you can do a class online. I love YogaDownload.com where classes are inexpensive and you can upload to your iPod or other MP3. Some are definitely "kick ass" yoga classes and others are "frou frou". They also have "free" 20 minute classes (usually 25-30 minutes) on iTunes so you can try out different instructors. I love Dave Farmar ... he's funny and irreverant but has excellent cueing and his classes are challenging -- even the beginner ones. Check it out!!

Karla – This was a very interesting commentary. I have a couple of observations to offer, especially after spending some time this weekend at the Jay Cutler Classic here in Boston.

The BB, Fitness and Figure communities are really just that – a community. Even if participants don’t like the distinctions, they are more often than not quite supportive of each other. It is a level of support borne from the respect earned for the dedication in the gym and towards the diet requirements of competition.

I resumed my training 3 years ago at our local Gold’s gym. After a while I got to know a number of serious lifters and BBers. While their goal and mine are were not the same - They were, without exception very encouraging, to both the DW and me. I guess (to generalize) what they were looking for in the gym was consistency, intensity and etiquette. They didn’t care how big you were, or how far down the right hand side of the DB rack you were working. The support was for your work in the gym, not your outfit, grunting or attitude.

I’m not sure that here at JPF we suffer from “Bromophobia” as much as we share a disgust for “brotards.” Sometimes we confuse the two types. I suggest looking at the etiquette – I’ve never met a real bro who would leave a weight racked or a DB on the floor.

This is EXACTLY the point I am trying to make. Just yesterday I read a post about someone who wants to eventually get a bbing body but who doesn't want to approach the training with isolation exercises because they believe more in functional training. (sigh...) I have (on numerous occasions) run into discussions where brotards and bbing were intermixed on this board. I believe there are still quite a few people who mix the two up (don't distinguish) and I am hoping that this post can possibly help some of the people to agree to this statement and not mix up bbing and brotards in the future quite as much. BBing people (for the most part) are pretty cool from what I can see.

BTW: I consider myself a "bro" or a "brah"... I am proud of it (in a funny sort of way). I am in the inner "bro" bbing circle at my gym. The Brotards unfortunately also use BRO so that is a problem when discussing this topic and using the term, "bro"

Hey Karla, what's up with all the 'meanieheads' wanting to drag you into a mall and go clothes shopping
That's got to be one of the worst punishments possible for a 'bro'-girl like you (or me)

BTW, I think you got a point with the low days needing to be low. You know how smitten I am to my every-other-day refeed dieting and don't mind going quite low.. however there's some magic lowest intake under which it's silly to go.. seems that 1200 is about the magic number for me.
Four weeks of just 1 day/week going under 1000kcal wrecked havoc in the fat loss mode.. not just because of the massive overfeeding since calorie-wise it was even less than when I was maintaining and managed to lose fat but gain muscle.
It was mostly the excess stress & lack of sleep doing me in.. that's what not eating enough can do to your body.

Thanks for the references Julie. I KNOW I should be stretching, etc but I am HORRIBLE about doing it. I just mostly find it boring. Right now I have a rib out though and stretching and popping my upper body feels good enough that I am doing it. LOL!

Werd on the shopping. Those girls have NO CLUE what they are thinking about doing. My money says that Karla doesn't go on a shopping excursion in Kansas.

I am not (at all) thinking of the extremes that you are. I am talking about much smaller adjustments. This is all a very controlled and fascinating experiment for me. I am learning how to drop the weight and then turn around and fuel the kick ass workout to keep the muscle from going away. It is a matter of keeping things deadly consistent and getting some precise timings down. Perhaps then I can go more extreme. I am taking a "crawl, walk, run" approach to this one. I feel like with my most recent learnings that I am gaining the knowledge that will empower me to do this on my own. I also am getting more rein from Alan now as I make more intelligent suggestions based on facts/intuition instead of emotion (AKA: I wanna be lean now).

Yesterday weight was at 132.8 and today at 131.2. Carb-up weight came in and is dropping out pretty nicely. Today is very low cal day so I expect to be back down to 130ish by end of week again.

My workout last night was BADASS! I was lifting way heavier than I did even in my bulk. I was crazy strong even with my rib out. This is unfreak'n believeable that I can be this lean and still be this strong. My delts are starting to pop out of my arms (yeah) and people are starting to make comments again to me. Not just fitness people either. Last night at the Guitar Society Meeting some guitar geek approached me and asked me about my nutritionist. The lower bf% is not my imagination. I remember that during my last cut when I was this lean, I was WAY, WAY weaker than I was in the bulk. I was also WAY, WAY lighter. I am thinking 7-10 lbs difference. HOLY cow would that not be too cool if I put on 7-10lbs of lean meat and could keep it?!? I am starting to get blown away by all of this. I am starting to learn this stuff at a very deep level. Alan's AARR is starting to make sense to me.... I am growing.... Life is good...

I'm guessing not - but then everyone else will be in Missouri

Werd on the shopping. Those girls have NO CLUE what they are thinking about doing. My money says that Karla doesn't go on a shopping excursion in Kansas.

Hey Karla,
I do my stretching and foam rolling in front of the TV set. It's the only time I watch TV, and I force myself to stretch when I do. Otherwise I would die of boredom also. The dog is confused by this and lies near me, looking worried.

I generally say I hate shopping, but after watching What Not To Wear the other day (whilst foam rolling) I think that if someone gave me a gift card with $5000 on it I wouldn't hate it so much.

And EXCELLENT on the muscle gain. Your back and shoulders have a lot of meat on them and I beg to differ--you are NOT smaller than me, I just have a lot more padding. Rilly.

Just saying HI--and see you SOON!

LOL! I was thinking KC and wrote Kansas. Actually if they are still talking about shopping once I get there, I am taking off to Kansas.

See you next week!!!! My friends have MANY TIMES threatened to put my on that stupid TV show. I have already told them that 5K was not nearly enough money to make me shop. I hate it that much. And yes... We will never know how much meat you really have until/unless you decide to dip down to the same bf%. Still you have a great base and foundation and I am jealous of the guns. LOL!

It is so funny. Wait to you see me and David together at the Summit. He can be a total Bro (even a brotard) and I love to banter with him. He calls me "Beeferton", "Beefy" etc... We are a pretty funny lifting team. I think he will gain so much from this weekend.

I am officially unsure what to do at this time though I think I know what I gotta do. I had two incredible lifts this week setting PRs or most number of reps for many of my exercises in both lower and upper strength. BUT my visit to the Chiro and Accupunture was not so good. Both of them said that I had great inflamation where my rib was out and discouraged me from lifting until next week. I was also made to promise that I would ice the thing and get rid of the inflamation back there..... sigh....

I don't want to lose the great mojo I have going on right now so do not want to take the down time but I am worried now that I am just not feeling pain again and will be unsafe. How is it that I don't feel pain so much that I can lift this heavy through something that is supposedly so serious? This freak'n kills me. I could feel it when I was lifting but it was more annoying than painful. I feel like I can keep lifting and keep going but am unsure now that makes sense. Crap... It might be time for me to take that rest week that I have been avoiding... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

You'll have a fantastic story to tell about that rib right after it punctures something & you're wrapped up like a mummy.

OR

You could be an unbrotard & remember you're human not Frankenstein.

Either way, I'm still going to be rooting for you.

Ditto. Not sure which option would surprise me more!

LOL @ DanceDiva letting you choose between Frankenstein or a mummy

Hard to tell you what to do .. they are the professionals, yet at t he same time I think they don't know how lifting makes us feel..
However, thinking of how you probably have a lowered sense of pain, your smartest move would be to pay attention to the warnings... or just lift very lightly. As if you were a girl wanting to tone with high reps
Good for the blood flow .. and now I'm being serious.

I think you should do your regular routine but with pink dumbbells.
