Hi Diane! I followed your log a bit back before the baby came along - you always had a knack for making me laugh

If you had wine last night and still lost weight, you should still have some come off tomorrow, you think? Since you're probably retaining some water from the alcohol... So any recipes forthcoming on the pumpkin hummus or tortilla wraps?
Hi Celeste! Yeah it was killer - so sore today! But in a good way. its not debilitating DOMS, but just an overall ache I guess. For the BSS's I have always been able to do a lot for some reason. I knew these thighs were good for somethin'! I have come to terms with the fact that they will never be thin, so I might as well make the ones I got look the best they can even if that means big and strong, lol. I will post the pumpkin hummus below...

Preheat oven to 450ºF. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray.
Arrange squash fries on prepared baking sheet and sprinkle with salt and chili powder; liberally coat with cooking spray.
Roast, turning once, until desired crispness, about 14 to 18 minutes. Yields 4 fries per serving.
Notes
*Start with a large squash. You will end up using about 1 lb of squash and have the “bulb” of the squash left over.
Yay! Recipes! Thanks This is pretty much what I did before my oven stopped working. I do the same with sweet potatoes.

Thanks Karen! I am going to struggle with the fat loss workouts I think simply because I thrive off getting stronger. I felt so cool when I got 135 on deadlift. I need to keep reminding myself that getting stronger will be there when I am done losing the fat.

Yes - me too Anne! It felt good to have some restraint, but I can't say this is the norm for me unfortunately. I lurrrvv snacky foods like dips and appetizers. I was talking to the friend I had over about this. She and I are on the same page fitnes wise for the most part. (Even though she is just barely 5'-0 and mayyyybe 95 pounds wet. She is still very healthy and is just naturally small. But I feel like a giant when we are together!) We both agreed that its hard to visit and socialize without it revolving around food of drink and the "peer pressure" if you don't participate and imbibe.
Today two things: 1. I was stravvvvvinnng all day! I haven't been this hungry in months. Does that mean my body is fighting me losing weight? 2. The gym wasn't as busy tonight! Hooray. There were TWO treadmills next to me open for over 20 minutes. The insanity! It was still busier, but not nearly as sardine like as Monday.
Here is what I did on said treadmill:
5 min. warm up @ 5.5 mph
1 min @ 8 mph
2 min @ 8 mph 7 times
8 min cool down @ 5.5 mph
10 minute walk @ 3.8 mph = total 42 minutes
HR monitor sez 457 total cals burned, avg 154, high 183
And as promised,
Pumpkin Hummus
From Eat Clean Diet Cookbook by Tosca Reno
2 tbsp tahini (umm this is really expensive...at least it was at my supermarket - perhaps whole foods or TJ's would be more reasonable?)
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp pumpkin oil (didn't have this nor do I know where to find it so I omitted)
3/4 tsp. sea salt
1/8 tsp. ground pepper
15 oz. pumpkin, baked or canned (i used canned)
4 cloves garlic, pressed in garlic press (I used two, love garlic but I have my limits)
2 tbsp cilantro
1. place all ingredients in food processor. Process until smooth.
2. Spoon into decorative bowl and serve chilled (I did not use a decorative bowl)
The Veggie Wheels were from the Hungry Girl cookbook. I just kind of used that as a base and did my own thing. Here is what I did:
- take softened fat free cream cheese and stir together with a little ranch seasoning from packet.
- spread onto low carb tortilla or in my case, Josephs lavash bread
- place spinach on the wrap, then sprinkle veggies - I used red pepper, tomato and cucumber and added turkey breast
- roll up and place toothpicks to hold, then cut into 1 inch slices
As an aside, can I just say how good the show The Wire is? We have watched the whole season on Netflix and are on the last 3 episodes. I don't know what I am going to do when its over! Oh wait, I know, The Tudors season two just came out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best evar.
I was hungry today, too. Hoping once I get a couple of more days under my belt, it won't seem sooo bad, LOL.
Glad that your gym is calming down! Mine was a little less busy last night, too.

Ooh, thanks for the recipes! I copied them into my OneNote. And once again, I have to say I was right about the BSS's! I had to do 4x6 today, and tried 35# dbs, ONE time was all it took to make me pick up the 25's!!! So you do rock, it's official!
ETA: I LOVE your new avi! Soooo cute and the title with it is priceless!
Just popping in to say I love your new pic -- makes me giggle! Reminds me of when I was little and ran over my pet duck's neck with my trike and killed it. (Who gives a toddler a duck as a pet anyway??) And, yes, I know I'm going to hell for it.

Wow...that sounds as tramatic as the time I ran over my pet lizard with my rollerskates and killed it. Who rollerskates while carrying a lizard? Oh wait...me apparently.
Sorry to add to that warm fuzzy memory for today.
Anyway Bree, you can add me to the list of hungry people. I woke up this morning just starving! So far some coffee and water have helped, a little.
And here I was feeling that I was alone in not being a member of the 'killed something accidentally' club. I'll stand over with Celeste... although it might be safer to stand with the others. Just in case you know!
On another note, the local radio station is having a contest about 'going to hell' tomorrow, with the person willing to share the worst deed winning tickets to the AC DC concert tomorrow night.
DS and I almost got run over last night - does that count???
We were leaving karate, and some woman was in her car in the parking lot with her lights on, but just sitting there doing something else. I was watching, and she wasn't looking, so I figured we were clear. We walked in front of her car, and right as we were crossing, she starts moving forward WITHOUT EVER LOOKING UP! Luckily the car next to her honked loudly and she looked up and saw us.
Then she waved us on (gee thanks)... at least it'd have been a soft hit, and I was gonna punch her hood HARD and try to leave a mark if she did plow into us...
Bree, wow, strong... I can't believe the weights all of you gals are pushing and pulling around! I console myself with the fact that at least I've graduated from Barbie dumbbells...
OH, I LOVED The Wire....one of my all-time favorite shows!! I was sad when it ended. And, I also love The Tudors!!
JRM is so dreamy. So is Henry Cavill!

Thanks Ginger! The hunger was much more manageable today. The gym was less busy again, but the weight room was popular. I had to wait a few times for the lat pulldown - not exactly great when you are trying to do a no-rest workout!

Thanks Bytsi - I think I USED to run fast. But the glory days of 5:30 miles are long gone. (And that wasn't even a winning time for girls back then!) I suppose I can't compare my 26 year old self to my 17 year old self any more, huh? I learned good running form from my coach in high school and I really think this helps me with sprinting and striding out when running faster.

Sorry about your lizard! As for coffee - it helps me a lot with hunger. I am pretty sensitive to caffeine though so have to watch it after 2pm.

I think its so funny because I remmeber watching my dad wear a sweat band like that when he lifted weights and played raquetball (totally 80s) and I wanted to be just like him.
As for the killing things, I never really had pets except for fish. So no chances to accidentally kill. I did have a goldfish that lived for 10 years though! I am pretty sure my dad "forgot" to feed it everytime we left on a vacation. We would come home and little goldy was still swimmin!

It would have left a dent with all that hamster strength! I almost got hit today because of drifter. Thats what I call it when people aren't paying attention and drift into my lane and leave about a foot between my car and the concrete median.

Thanks Pauline! I have made a lot of progress in a year, but this month I am doing fat loss workouts, so my weights are much more humbling!
Speaking of humbling, here is my workout!
NROL Fat Loss III B1
Giant set with no rest, 4x's through:
Front Squat:
10 x 65
(I accidentally did the first set of back squats at 105)
Underhand grip lat pulldown:
10 x 85
Step Up: (Its baaaaacccck!)
10 x 20's
DB Push Press:
10 x 20's
Giant set with no rest, 2 times through:
Back Squat
20 x 65
Wide Grip Lat Pulldown
20 x 55
Step Up:
20 x 20's, then had to drop to 15's for the second
DB shoulder press:
20 x 15's
Notes:
This wasn't too bad considering how busy it was. I only had to wait twice for the lat pulldown. When you are doing 6 sets, I suppose thats not bad. I just wanted to stick to the no rest, but its tough in a busy gym!
Squats: Front squats are a weakness of mine. I know I need to work on them but don't like them much! And I maybe could have used more weight on the 20 rep part. Maybe.
Lat Pulldown: 85 is good for 10 reps but I can go up. As for the wide grip - it was wayyyyy too easy. Must go up next time.
Step Ups: AHHHHHHHH I forgot how much I hate these! And 20 reps a leg? Shoot me. The last set I did continuous but had to switch legs after 10 to prevent monotony. These were very hard thoug and heart rate was very high.
DB press: 20's is too easy for 10 reps. But this is where this workout gets tricky because 15's were tough at the end of 20 reps. So if I fatigue the muscle too much during the first giant set, the second giant set of 20 reps becomes that much harder. Hmmmm.
I also walked on the treadmill for abuot 10 minutes.
Lifting took 41 minutes, so with that and the walk, 51 minutes total, my Polar said I burned 540. Seems high. It was a tough workout but still. During the lifts it was in the 170's for a majority of the time. Whew. I know my quads are going have major doms tomorrow.
I will catch up on logs tomorrow - sorry! I have to do some work from home tonight.
hey bree! congrats on all of your 2008 accomplishments. I just wanted to pop in and say your avi and particularly the caption made me belly laugh this morning!
So DOMS has set in already! I have a nice full body ache going on today. Some places I haven't felt sore for along time, too. Like my calves? And lower bicep? I always try to figure out what movement caused that soreness my re-enacting my lifts. Its probably funny to watch while I sit at my desk.
Its been a long week and I am glad its Friday. I have a pressing deadline at work for next week. Might have to put in some extra hours next week.
Tonight its hockey game night, then tomorrow I plan on lifting before my first big challenge of the challenge.
I figured there are about 3 known events in the next 6 months that will be bad for my progress. One is tomorrow, one is my birthday, and the other is our trip to Mexico. These events all include lots of food and drinking. Tomorrow is our Christmas party with my DH's brother who we are very close with. We drink a lot and there is a lot of food. I probably will watch the food, but have a harder time avoiding the alcohol and am probably going to just enjoy myself, then do some time on the treadmill on Sunday to ward off some of the damage. Its hard to admit, but I really enjoy beer and wine on the weekends and its a definite weakness of mine. Putting that aside for the next 6 months and limiting it to one or two instead of 3 or 4 in a night is going to be really hard for me. One of the hard parts is the "peer pressure". So many of our friends are still on college mode where binge drinking is just what they do on the weekends still. I can't be a hermit, but have to find a balance between the heavy drinking that is expected and having people asking me if I am pregnant because I am not drinking. So there it is...the thing I am struggling with the most right now.

This really hits home for me too. Tonight we're going to a friend's birthday celebration--at the bar of course. It's going to be a bunch of my BFs friends/bandmates. They all drink a lot! It's impossible for me to keep up. But darned if I don't try sometimes. I find that if I have a drink, then water or soda water, followed by a drink it's easier to limit myself to 2-3. And then, there's always the "I'm driving" excuse. People tend to understand that.
On top of tonight, I told some friends that I'd go see some 80s hair cover-band tomorrow. That's going to be tougher than tonight!
Love your avi! I should put up my kindergarten picture because it's hilarious. Plus, I'm rocking the 1970 plaid dress!
I hear you on the drinking part when around other people that drink in a social situation. Usually, I'm the one driving so I can limit that way, but if I go somewhere where I don't have to, I tend to keep up. God, I just made myself sound like a total lush. However, unless I'm going out to dinner or we have company, I very rarely drink.

Good luck to you too! Part of me wants to just relax and have fun and not worry, but most of me wants to keep this thing on course!
I think we talked about this in either your log or mine a while back. I am glad I am not alone!

Great avi! Makes me giggle
You don't sound like a lush. Its hard to explain if people haven't been in those shoes. I think once you mention having lots of drinks, the red flag goes up, but its not like that. I guess everyone's normal is different. I think my normal that was formed in college as a bartender and friends that had one of the many notorious party houses is a little skewed. And I went to school in North Dakota, lol. And yes its as cold as you think. I have no regrets tho.
Anywho, got my new books today! Can't wait to start reading Body Fat Solution by Tom Venuto. It looks amazing and if any of the endorsements by people like Leigh Peele, and reviews are even half as good, as they claim its going to be great. I hope to learn a lot!
The other book is Built for Show by Nate Green. Its totally for dudes, but I was looking at the workouts more closely over lunch and they look very similar in nature to NROL, so I think it will be a great addition to my workout arsenal!
"As far as (healthy) eating, either do it, or don't. Same issues repeated over and over is just insanity. We either commit to the endeavor or pay lip-service to it. This is the hardest part of the whole process, and it needs to be practiced more than the actual physical training. It's mind training." ~ Matt Thorne
"The reason that most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want most for what they want at the moment."

College drinking seems to be a league all it's own. I used to be able to drink more when I was in college, too. Every now and then I forget that I can't drink (because you lose that capacity when you only drink 2-3 times a year, duh ) and live to regret it. But, there are certain people in all of our lives who trigger this tendency, I think.

I love getting new books! I'm interested in those ones, too, but I'm more looking for training ones that are usable for me. Because I already have so much similar stuff I'm trying to curtail spending to save up for other things I need (such as some new slacks and jeans that I don't need to consider suspenders to wear). But, I'm definitely interested in/looking forward to hearing how you like them and if there's new and useful information!

I've been considering this one - let us know what you think of it!!
Just checking in to catch up on logs! You mentioned a couple posts back about learning proper running form in school.. and tips you could post here? I think I hate running so much because I don't know how to do it properly! lol
Wow I felt lost without the forum! I started thinking of who I could contact and see if it was just me....but I don't have anyones emails or anything. I might need some new facebook buddies in the event of another crash so we can hug it out.
So far Body Fat Solution is great. I am only about 20 pages in...but I will report as I go along!
Kara - as far as running goes, I am not an expert and I am sure there is way better info out there then I can give, but I had the most problems with my arms. When jogging I would carry them up at my chest and move them side to side. You want to keep them lower, more at 90 degrees, and mostly moving front to back. My Dad, who teaches hockey, once told me that when skating you see so many people swing their arms side to side - especially rollerbladers and he pointed out that you are moving against the motion of your legs making it less efficient. So I think that can be true with running. Also, when running up a hill you want to lower your arms and drive your knees higher.
When it comes to sprinting, its a little more tricky and I wasn't much of a sprinter, but the 90 degree arms apply and getting up on your toes helps, too. When I do sprints for HIIT in the summer, I remind myself to drive my arms and stay on my toes, and that seems to help.
So I have two workouts to post!
First Saturdays:
NROL Fat Loss III, A2
Giant set with no rest, 4 times through:
Deadlift:
10 x 115
Explosive push up: (this wasn't really all that explosive)
10 x BW
Bulgarian Split Squat:
10 x 25's *up from last time
Two Point DB Row:
10 x 25's * up from last time
Giant set with no rest, 2 times through:
Deadlift from box: (no box so stood on plates, the bar is just above my toe at home anyway)
20 x 85
DB Bench Press:
20 x 25's
Walking Lunge w/side bend:
20 x 10's
Cable Seated Row: (subbed bent over row b/c at home)
20 x 20's
And abs at the end, normal set:
Hanging Leg Raise (subbed incline reverse crunch)
2 x 10 x BW
Ahhhh this sucked! I did it in the morning on an empty stomach after a deficit day. Need to eat next time! This is just too hard without food. I was beat the rest of the day yesterday, but still cleaned the house and ran errands. I only had a protein shake after because I knew I would be eating alot that night, but....
Last night was better then I thought. I drank less and ate way less then I thought I would. Still a lot of cals, but I think it could have been worse.
So based on how good I felt today, I forced myself to the gym. I started jogging and it felt good, so I ended up running at 6 mph for 3.5 miles, then walked for 25 minutes making it a total of 60.
Then I meandered down to the weight room and did some hammie stuff for some reason. I did a few sets of single leg RDL's, back extensions, and regular RDL's.
Then I did a set of assisted chin ups on that strange machine. I don't know how it works though - is the weight I set it on the weight I am "lifting"? Or the weight it is assisting me with - meaning do I subtract it from my own weight? Either way, I consider today a success especially after all the beer I had last night
So far today I have been trying to watch my food. I have had some crackers and hummus and now I am going to go eat a little "greek" salad I threw together. Cucumbers, black olives, fat free feta, red pepper, chicken breast, and walden farms rasp. viniagrette.
Oh and I might do some foam rolling. I am trying to get used to it - it hurts!

You so just ruined my lunch. I was sitting here, munching my quickie stir fry that didn't turn out so well, but happy it was at least in front of me. Then I read your salad.

Oh Diane, it turned out to be not that tasty so don't worry. I don't know what it was....it just didn't taste good. I felt bad throwing most of it away, I just couldn't force it!
This is mostly a quick drive by....I need to vent some anger. Look at this ridiculous article someone posted on another board....I am so sick of the crap out there that people believe!
Some highlights....women shouldn't do chin ups or pullups because of less upper body strength and they can injure themselves....women shouldn't do LUNGES because they are quad dominant and can hurt thier hamstrings....women shouldn't do and plyo-jumping exercises because of HORMONAL BALANCES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow - OMFG!!! What an awful article. Twisting science to say women can't or shouldn't work out!?!? And HOW is an inverted row the same exact thing as a chinup or pullup????? Uh - horizontal pull versus vertical pull - totally different angle and muscle usage there... sheesh!!!!!
Only good thing I can say is I've never heard of that site and won't be going back.
