July 7,

Swim Class
1.2 hours

Total Distance - 2800 yards

Comments:
My wife has bronchitis, so we've been having fun with that for the past few days. I had to take Sat-Mon off helping out with everything at the house. Hopefully I'm back on track now, since my tri is next weekend. I'm going to try to rent a kayak for Saturday and have my wife follow me on the TN River so I can practice some OWS.

July 8,

Bike:
Distance - 15.75 miles
Loops - 5.25 Miles
17:45 - 17.8 mph
18:45 - 16.8 mph
18:36 - 16.9 mph

Comments:
I had numbness in my left hand after riding this week and last. Looked it up and I guess I'm putting too much pressure on my left arm and probably don't have my wrist in a neutral position. I'll make sure and work on this next time, since having part of my hand numb sucks. Especially since I have class and it's tough to write.

I recently bought a pair of bike gloves mainly for the pressure sores I was getting after a long ride, but the padding also takes the pressure off the ulnar nerve so I haven't had any tingling or numbness in my fingers since.

Just an idea.

I had thought about getting gloves. I'll see if I still have any problems after I adjust a bit.

Best of luck! Open water can be a bit intimidating, can't it? You're smart to prepare with a pre-race swim. I'm sure it will help tremendously.

You can also move your hands around. If you usually ride on the drops, move up to the brake hoods, or just inboard or outboard to them. If you take long rides, add a set of aero bars so you have more options. Try sitting more upright to take weight off your hands every so often.

With respect to gloves - yes.
The padding helps with pressure and numbness, but even more, if you take a spill they can protect you from tearing up your palms with road rash.

Yeah, I bought gloves after a spill. I was picking gravel out of my hand for a week or so. I didn't know about the pressure and numbness issue.

Joe, enjoy your open water swim. It is such a different experience. I loved it. I just wish I had more opportunities.

July 11,

Swim:

30 minutes Open Water Swim

Comments:
So my wife and I went out to the TN river and she followed me in a kayak. Started off pretty rough, but once I got a rhythm going I did well. Once I started counting my strokes I was good. It kept my mind occupied and it helped me sight more often. Really glad I got my jitters out doing this OWS before the race. Next weekend should go great.

July 13,

Swim:

30 minutes
450 yards - 9:52 (with sighting)

Comments:
I watched a couple of youtube videos for breast stroke and tried it out. It seemed to take a good amount more energy than freestyle. I would imagine that was because of my form, so I may play with that this Fall for fun. I completed a 450 yard swim with my best measured time yet, and it included sighting every 12 strokes. I think I'm going to do well this Saturday.

July 14,

Swim:

1.5 hour class
Total Distance - 2700 yards

Comments:
Class went well, I was talking a good bit today, so I had to skip a 16X25 set. But I believe I got some good tips for Saturday.

July 15,

Run:

Total Time - 30 minutes
Distance ~ 3.5 miles

Comments:
It was HOT. I had planned on running on this trail near my office that is supposed to be shaded well, but since I didn't get to go until 3:00 there was 0 shade. Sun was at a perfect angle to ensure the trees on the weren't able to cast much of a shadow. First couple of miles went pretty well, but after that the heat got to me. I didn't push it much since I have the race this weekend. Next time I'll be running earlier in the day.

July 16,

Bike:

Total time - 30 miuntes
Total Distance ~ 9 miles

Comments:
I've been having problem with the extension part of my aero bars, so I used Gorilla glue to fix it. Worked pretty well, though they are no longer adjustable.

July 18,

Triathlon:

Swim - 400m, 10:17
T1 - 2:48
Bike - 9 miles, 28:40
T2 - 1:00
Run - 3.2 miles, 24:32

Comments:
First OWS race went pretty well. I was happy enough with the swim, though I could have done better. My rhythm broke down around 300 m. I could have been 30 seconds to a minute faster, but hey I finished so I'm not complaining. T1 sucked, it was a good bit of a run from the river to the bikes and I fumbled a bit. The bike went well enough. Not sure on my T2 time, I forgot to hit lap on my watch, so I took 30 seconds on the run and the bike and put it to T2. My calves both cramped off when I started the run. Just had to run it off, not sure what exactly I can do to fix that. After the calves let up it went pretty well. I even manged to smile a few times on the run. It was a good day.

Congrats on the Tri! When's the next one? At least the weather was halfway decent this past weekend for a July race.

Next tri will be in August. It's the Huntsville HiWAAY Sprint Tri. My wife will be doing it as well, so it should be fun.

But did you have fun??? I love the new avi. I'm making my sons and my parents come to my next tri, also in August, to take pictures so I'll have some cool tri action shots to post.

I did have a good time. Especially once I was done with it. They had a photographer taking pics, and this was my best one. The others were during my run and each looked awkward.

July 22,

Run:

Total Distance - 5.2 Miles
Total Time - 42:33
Pace - 8:11

Intervals - 2:00 regular/0:20 high intensity

Comments:
I felt good about this run until I saw it was only 5.2 miles. I thought I was making good time, but the intervals must have affected my perception. It was a nice day to run because of the clouds and relatively low temp.

July 24,

Bike:
Total Distance - 12 miles
Total Time - 42:22
Speed - 17 mph

Swim:
Total Distance - 800 yards
Total Time - 18:42

Comments:
Since my next tri has the swim last, I rode then swam (with a shower between). For both of these I did twice the distance I'll be doing in my next tri. I couldn't get the speed on the bike that I wanted. I had some rolling hills, but nothing that should have slowed me down this much. The swim went well enough, but I can tell I need to get more endurance in my shoulder area if I want to go faster.

Comments:
I thought the run went pretty well. There were some long hills, but nothing too bad. For the bike portion there were some very long hills, and the bumpy road seemed to take away the momentum on the down hill. I put a solid amount of effort into it, though I went slow.

Humble question: are you being fastidious about your form? Many people make the mistake of sacrificing form when they turn over their arms faster for speed (in fact I was watching one of my sons do this last night).

Keep strict about your form and the speed will follow.

And yeah, posting this is just as much a reminder for myself as a suggestion for you

But I decided screw it I could figure all of that out later. I bought the Total Immersion book and the TI DVD, and started to learn how to swim. I bought a road bike a few days ago, so now I'm ready to start training for real. I plan on swimming Monday and Friday, running Tuesday and Thursday, lifting on Friday, and Saturday will be a bike and run day. With school and 3 young boys at home this is schedule is not set in stone.
This is your first post in this log from January. I just wanted to pull it in and say you've really come a very long way in a very short time. Good for you.
