June 16,

Swim:
1.5 hour class
Total Distance - 3200 yards

Comments:
I was going slower today, and couldn't keep up with the times set after 2000 yards. I should have been doing 100 yard free in 2:00, but I think I was closer to 2:30. Just got keep working at it and build up the speed and endurance.

June 17,

Bike:

Total Time - 1.25 hour
Timed Laps - 5 miles
14:50 - 20.2 mph
17:57 - 16.7 mph

Comments:
Another fun ride in 90 degrees. Cycling is much easier in the heat than running, so it's OK. I would have had three timed loops, but I wasn't paying attention and missed a turn. I slowed down a good bit on the 2nd loop, and I was really surprised. Traffic may have been something to do with it, but not a few minutes. I'll try to keep using this loop on Wednesdays, so I have something to gauge against. I've ordered the bike computer, so hopefully that will be here next week.

June 18,

Swim:

1 hour hour swim class
Total Distance - 2100 yards

Comments:
I was pooped today, so I had to leave early. Didn't get much sleep last night, combination of kids crying (teething) and bad luck.

Today was a hot one. In the 90's and humid. Definitely affected the run and then later lifting. I had to clean up sweat from pretty much every where I went. It was a bit much.

June 20,

Bike:
Distance - 8.4 miles
Time - 30:00*

Run:
Total Distance - 3.45 miles
Total Time - 29:29
Pace - 8:36

Comments:
Unluckily my son wiped my time from my watch before I wrote it down. It felt like a good ride, and the second half which is uphill went better than last time. Bike computer shipped, so hopefully it will be in for my ride on Wednesday.

June 22,

Swim:

45 minutes - drills

Comments:
Worked with the leg buoy and fins for the first half. Trying to get comfortable breathing on my right side. Not there yet, but it should be any day now. I wanted to swim more, but I had a meeting. During the summer there are swim classes pretty much all day, so I have a small window I can do lap swim.

June 23,

Swim:

1.5 hour class

500 free - warm-up (450 yards in 10:18)
10 X 50 - 1:10 - hand paddles and leg buoy
400 free - 1:00 rest
8 X 50 - 1:00 - kick board and fins
300 free - 0:45 rest
6 X 50 - 1:10 hand paddles and leg buoy
200 free - 0:30 rest
4 X 50 - 1:00 kick board and fins
100 free - 2:08 - fast pace for time
2 X 50 - 1:10 - hand paddles and leg buoy
300 cool down

Total Distance - 3300 yards

Comments:
I actually remembered the schedule, so I figured I'd post it up. My youngest son (about to be 1) has a bit of a cold and a stuffy nose, so he didn't sleep well. I got up a couple of times and had to stay up with him for a bit (though my wife did much much more), so I went into class 30 minutes late. Worked out pretty well though, since everyone just follows the schedule at their own pace. Still got to work by 8:00.

June 24,

Bike:

Total Distance - 18.7

5 mile loops - distance/avg speed
Loop 1 - ?/?
Loop 2 - 18:11/16.5 mph
Loop 3 - 18:03/16.5 mph

Comments:
Got my bike computer yesterday and installed it. Cadence isn't working, so I'll try to work on that tonight. The time starts as soon as I start pedaling and stops when mph=0. Problem with that is because of traffic lights and cars, it can take 30 seconds to stop completely for each light. So the times are a bit off, but it will be good for comparison. This is safer than using my watch and stopping and starting. The distance seemed to be really accurate. It had pretty much exactly what I had measured using Gmaps.

As for the ride, it went well. Much windier than I'm used to, so it was good to get experience with that. I liked knowing my speed and when I need to kick it up a notch. I think this will be a useful tool.

LOL...I get plenty of experience riding in the wind. It is a rarity when the wind isn't blowing. A couple of weeks ago I was riding home from a 17 mile ride, against the wind, and I couldn't get over 9 or 10 mph with cars blowing past me at 60+. It was very unsettling. Good to train in, but it sucks. It is nice to know how fast you are going and to get practice shifting as needed to maintain a certain speed. I don't think my $15 computer is as accurate for total distance, but since I can map it that doesn't bother me too much.

My computer cost about $30 on Amazon. I have been pretty impressed with it.

June 25,

Swim:

1.5 hour class
Total Distance - 3100 yards

Drill Day

Comments:
We worked on drills for most of the time. We were doing one drill where we would only breath every 6 strokes. I was under the impressions I was supposed to breath out the entire time, which meant I was dying for air if I made it to six strokes. The teacher noticed this and had me slow down the breathing out, and it worked really well. I was able to bring that into my regular swim and could go 4 strokes for a breath. I'll need to work on it some, but I think this is really going to help me. Also I found out there is a swim store in my area, so I'll be checking that out this afternoon to get some new goggles and probably a new swim suit.

June 26,

Mock Tri - 450 yard swim, 7.8 mile bike, 2.6 mile run
Total Time - 59:30

Swim - 10:00
T1 - 1:31
Bike - 25:25
T2 - 1:00
Run - 21:35

Comments:
A couple of buddies and I decided to do a mock tri this morning. Wasn't feeling great in the swim at first, but once I caught a rhythm I was good. Competition in the pool make me on edge for some reason, so I'll need to make sure and get into a zone quickly for the OWS in a few weeks. I got the cadence working on my bike, and I read that I should be at about 90. I rarely was in the 70's, even downhill so I'm not sure if I just need to speed it up or what. I did have to rig the cadence monitor a good bit to work, so maybe it isn't correct. I don't think I'd be going anywhere if I was in a high enough gear to pedal that fast. I'll be playing with that for a while. My calves cramped up a minute into the run again. I had thought the bricks I'd been doing would fix that. I guess I need to speed up my transistion when doing those to work out the kinks.

Forgot to mention, I picked up new goggles. TYR Velocity, and they were great. The straps are both pretty loose, but the goggles stayed suctioned on and I don't think I had any leaks. Here's a link http://www.amazon.com/TYR-Velocity-R...025201&sr=8-40

Thanks. Hopefully all the training will lead to an improvement in a few weeks during my next sprint tri. If I can knock out the OWS this time, I may try for Olympic distance next year.

June 30,

Swim:

1.5 hour class
Total Distance - 2900 yards

Comments:
I'm back in classes for a mini-semester. Which means I have class from 5:30 - 9:30 Monday and Wednesday. I get home a bit before 10:00, so I'm trying to make the pool by 6:00. It actually worked out pretty well today, so I just need to keep it up for 5 weeks The swim went well. There were fewer people there today, and we ended up talking more than usual. Which is probably why I didn't get to the 300 yard cool-down before I had to leave. I don't get to talk about tri's very often, so it was fun.

I went to an OWS clinic this weekend and it was really helpful. You should look into doing that before your first OWS tri. They cover all your questions. We spent over an hour doing drills swimming out and in, dolphin diving, sighting, breathing a behind instead of to the side to avoid waves, swimming without kicking. Then we swam the 1/2 mile Pacific Coast Triathlon course. It was a great experience. I felt really at ease--there were several lifeguards and swim angels that helped with that. It was definitely worth doing.

Unluckily there aren't any OWS clinics I could find in my area. They have one in Atlanta (about 4 hours away), but it is the week after the OWS tri. Guess I'll suck it up and get it done.

July 1,

Bike:
Total Time - 1.5 hours

5 mile loops
18:16
20:00
20:00

Total Distance - 18.7

Comments:
Tried to work on cadence today, and I could stay in the 80's pretty well on flat ground and for a while on hills. I think after the first loop of staying in the 80's I was zapped. There is a long slow hill near the end of the loop and I had to slow down a good bit to get through it.

I have cages. I may upgrade to clipless next year. I'm trying to keep the budget for tri's this year to a minimum.

July 2,

Swim:
Swim class
1.25 hours
Total Distance - 2900 yards

Comments:
This week has been tough with classes twice a week lasting until 9:30. Waking up for these is going to be rough. Today I slept in a bit and actually felt pretty good. Though I could feel I didn't have everything after about 30 minutes in the pool. But, I was able to knock out most of the workout, just had to skip 400 yards.

Must almost be time to update your old picture with your new triathlete body.

Once again nice work with the swimming.

I use the same pic for Facebook, and my wife has mentioned the same thing. I've lost 16 lbs. since starting and probably 3" from my waist. Which is funny because I wasn't looking to lose weight while doing this. I'm usually around 159 now, and I'd rather not go any further down. This Fall I'll work more in the gym and see if I can gain some muscle back.

Nice work. Getting rid of the extra weight can only make you faster too. Never a bad thing.
