May 21,

Swim:
1.75 hours of swim class

Comments:
Felt much better this day. I wasn't able to finish the entire list, but I got pretty close. I stopped a few times to get direction from the instructor. I need to work on my kick, and in particular my feet. I have to stretch them out to get flatter.

May 23,

Bike:
Distance - 8.2 miles
Total Time - 29:45

Run:
Distance - 3.1 miles
Total Time - 26:34
Pace - 8:34

Comments:
As I was getting the bike out of my truck, another cyclist came by. So we road together. Since I hate riding near cars, having more people around is always a good thing. I think he was going slower on the first half, then sped up on the second. It was good to have someone to pace against.

I agree re the cars, I feel much safer and more willing to go more places when I'm riding with others. Riding alone I tend to stick closer to home where the traffic is lighter. It also helps to ride with others to give you an idea of how fast you're riding. I don't have a bike computer thingie and I can only guess at actual mph. But at least when I'm riding others if I'm lagging behind I can ride harder to keep up. That incentive isn't there when I'm alone.

Where are you riding? One of my coworkers keeps telling me there are great places to ride or run along the river near Mooresville. Apparently there is a 10-mile loop out there. Of course, it would be 15 miles or so out there from Huntsville.

I've just been doing Hughes Road in Madison. It's about .5 mile from my house, and on Saturday mornings is relatively empty. I know where Mooresville is so I'll have to check it out. Thanks.

May 25,

Run:

Distance - 6.2 miles
Total Time - 1:07
pace 10:48

Comments:
This was a 10k race my wife and I did this morning. I keep pace with my wife, which accounts for the speed. But we had fun and got to spend time together. And it was pretty fun. The second half in particular had a good number of spectators and there was music. Pretty sure we'll do this next year.

May 26,

Swim:

1.75 hour class
2 X 400
4 X 200
8 X 100
16 X 50 - swapped between with and without fins.

Comments:
Man, I did not want to get out of bed this morning, but I'm glad I did. This was a tough class. I'm trying to keep my rests between sets low, but I need to work on it better. I think half of it is mental, I just like knowing that I can breathe normally for a short time. Still working on my kick, can't seem to kick consistently through breathing.

Bike:

45 minutes

Comment:
Hopefully I'll be getting a bike computer for Father's Day. It's tough to tell how I'm doing without any real way to tell speed or cadence. I try to stay away from traffic when possible, so my route is changing constantly.

I just picked up a cheap bike computer at Target yesterday. The only thing it doesn't give is cadence, but I figured I can worry about that down the road. I think those are quite a bit more expensive--mine was $15.00. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet...but it is going to be helpful to know my speed at least.

I've put this one on my Father's Day wish list. http://www.amazon.com/Cateye-CC-RD20...=1YJ48ZPOJM5QX

Hopefully my 2 y/o son can figure out how to use mommy's credit card on the Internet. He's pretty smart, and devious, so I've got a solid chance at it.

May 28,

Swim:

1.5 hour class

Comments:
Today went very well. I got in the pool and saw we were starting with an 800 warm-up, which seemed a bit daunting at 5:30 a.m. But I was feeling good and was able to finish it. I use my watch mainly to keep up with the laps, but looking back I found out I did 450 in 10:20. Almost 1 minute faster than the best I've done. Add to that, it was in the middle of the set so I wasn't using all of my energy at that point. Pretty sure I could get it down to 10:00 if I'm just going for 450. I may try that on Monday. I'm spending this weekend up at my buddies new lake house, so if I am able to wake up anyone Saturday morning who is relatively sober, I'll be able to do some open water swimming.

Yeah, I've heard good things about that one. And that's a good price. My budget is very tight and I'm working on wetsuit, trisuit, event fees. I figure if I feel I need to, I can upgrade down the road. Good luck!

All of this stuff gets expensive quick. I've been buying things as I go. I've got the basics (bike, running shoes, tri shorts). So now I'm slowly getting more the extras. Next big purchase will probably be cycling shoes/pedals. But for now my running shoes slide into the toe clip fine.

I was lucky in that I purchased the shoes back in 2002 when I started doing indoor cycling classes at a local spin studio. When I got my bike I had a scary accident with the toe clips...stopped suddenly to avoid hitting the girl in front of me, couldn't get my foot out of the toe clip and smacked the ground hard. My head took the brunt of the impact, thank goodness for the helmet. My helmet was damaged and I had to replace it. Really scary. So in the interest of safety I replaced them with "clipless" pedals that used the same cleats already on my shoes. Since I was already familiar with clipping in and out of those the transition was instantaneous.

May 29,

Bike:
Distance - 8.3 miles
Time - 29:05

Run:
Distance - 3.37
Time - 27:16
Pace 8:04

Comments:
I was really impressed with my run. I checked the pace on my sportsband a couple of time, and had assumed it must have been off because of the pace I was keeping. After the run I went back and checked the GMAP Pedometer and it matched up. I did this brick on Friday because I spent the weekend at the lake with a few buddies. So I missed a lifting day, but it was worth it.

June 2,

Swim:
1 hour class.

Comments:
I hurt something about 30 minutes into class today on my side near my ribs. Whenever I would spear my right arm out it would hurt. I took a break for a few minutes, but it didn't help. Then tried to swim through it, but it wasn't getting any better. I figured instead of keeping going, I would cut this one short and be ready for Thursday. It is still hurting today, but much less and only if I take a deep breath. I think it was just a pulled muscle or something.

June 3,

Bike:

Distance - 19.2
Time - 1:13:11
Pace - 15.7 mph

Comments:
I was curious to see how far I went today, so I used GMAP pedometer. The time above is with some traffic. There are several traffic lights and stop signs, so if I had to come a complete stop I would usually stop my watch. But for the most part I didn't worry about it. I wasn't very tired afterwards, so I probably should have put more into it. Hopefully I'll get the bike computer for Father's day and that will give me something something to use to adjust effort levels.

June 4,

Swim:

1.5 hour class
Total Distance - 3000 yards.

Comments:
Whatever I pulled on Tuesday is felling better. I took some tylenol before hitting the pool and didn't notice much discomfort. When I take a deep breath I can feel it, but my stroke didn't hurt at all.

I ran then went straight to lifting. It went pretty well considering I had lifted in a few weeks. For pullovers and lat raises I was hindered by whatever I pulled on my right side on Tuesday. It was surprisingly painful. We'll see how it goes.

Run:
Distance - 3.4 miles
Total Time - 29:40

One of my sons didn't want to sleep much more than 20 minutes at a time, so I didn't get much sleep. My wife has the weekends off for waking up with kids. I was pretty impressed I was actually able to do anything today. My run sucked, but I did average on the bike. This was one of those times, when I'm just happy I was able to get out there and complete it.

June 8,

Run:

Distance - 5.2 miles
Time - 45:34
Pace - 8:46

Comments:
Today was a hot one. I couldn't make it to the pool like normal today, so I decided to go for a run. It was in the mid 80's, and I'm not sure how anyone can run when it's hotter than that. If I didn't have to slow down to keep the wiping the stinging sweat from my eyes I probably could have gone much faster. Guess I need to pick up a running hat or a sweat band. Since I'm in Alabama, and in the summer mid 90's is normal, I guess I have to get used to this. Hopefully I'll be able to run early in the mornings or later in the evenings for the most part.

I'm in the California high desert and we are frequently over 100 during the summer. I do my running as late in the evening as possible. But then it cools down a little for us once the sun goes down, and the wind kicks up...you have the humidity. That sucks any time of the day. So...I guess you'll have to get used to it.

It wouldn't be too bad if I can run early in the morning or late in the evening, but my wife and I swap out morning workouts, and mine used for my swim class. Saturdays I wake up and do a run/bike brick, but the other days I can't. I don't want to do evenings, since that's when I get to spend time with my wife and sons. Since running isn't a bottleneck for me it shouldn't be a problem.

June 9,

Swim:

Class 1.5 hours
Total Distance - 3200 yards

Comments:
Another fun day of waking up before 5:00 to get in the pool. It went well and I was able to do everything on our list including cool down in the 1.5 hours. My Total Immersion O2 in H2O DVD just came in, so I plan on doing those drills tomorrow. If I can get breathing better I should feel more confident in open water.

Got kicked out of the pool because of lightning. Didn't know there was any danger, since it's indoors.

June 11,

Swim:
1.75 hour class
Total Distance - 3200 yards

Comments:
Today went well. We had a 500 warm-up, and I timed the last 450 yards and got in at 10:09. My best time yet. It felt slow and steady and I wasn't out of breath. I'm going to try to do a mock tri next week, so we'll see my time is when I go all out. I worked on m kick for last last 30 minutes and I think I am improving. I was originally under the impression I needed to try to keep my feet parallel to the pool bottom, so when I turned my body to breath I had a pretty awkward kick trying to keep my feet from rolling. The instructor had me do a drill today that showed my feet could roll a bit, so I believe I'll be able to get it down.

3 miles
Very slow pace.

Comments:
I was in St. Louis for a buddies wedding, and my wife and I got up early and ran in the park with the Arch. It helped us sweat out some of the ridiculous amounts of alcohol we drank Friday night. Since I was running with my wife it was probably a 10 or 11 minute pace.

June 15,

Swim:
1 hour drills.
450 yards - 10:35

Comments:
Worked on right side breathing today. Used leg buoy, fins, something that should have been freestyle. I need to just keep working at it to get it natural. I ended with a 450 yard swim. The second half I was about 30 seconds slower, which was surprising since I thought I was going pretty slow for the first half. Tried to kick it up a notch on the last 150, but looks like that was just more tiring. Next time I'm going to try to put the same effort into the whole thing and see if that makes a difference.

I do feel like I'm eating a ton. Much more than I did when I was only lifting a few days a week. I've been down to my lowest weight in probably 10 years, and the only time I gained anything was this past weekend when I went out of town for a wedding. We ate junk food and drank like fish for 3 days, so it's not surprising.
