Comments:
I had to swim at 5:30 today and it was packed. I skipped the cool down to let someone else swim. I'll have to swim at this time again a few more times, since I'm staying at home during the day a few more times.

For my triathlons this year I'll be doing 400 meters, so I figured I'd practice that length and see what I my time was. My goal is to get it to 12 minutes for my first tri April 12th. This shouldn't be a problem.

Comments:
Could not get motivated today. I was going to try to swim a mile, but I couldn't get into it. I was really bored after just 20 minutes of swimming, so I just decided to call it an early day. I wasn't really tired, but the tedium of back and forth got to me today more than others. In the future I'm going to work more on speed now that I know I can do a decent distance.

Nice work with the running. You kick my ass.

I think you need to add some longer rides in. All I can see is 20min rides once a week.

Looks like its all adding up nicely.

You enjoying it still?

March 7,

Run:

Distance - 3.1 miles
Time - 28:49
Pace - 9:18

Distance - 2.9 miles
Time - 26:41
Pace - 9: 12

Comments:
I ran a charity 5k with my wife; it's fun having someone to run with but the slower pace can be annoying. It was such a pretty day I decided to run some more.

Now that the weather is getting better I'll be riding some more. I'm just not into it enough to ride in the cold.

I am having a good time. I had a few hiccups with a sore foot and a cold, but I think I'm back on track and plan to kick it up a notch.

Getting faster is going to take time. I started off strong, but I got wasn't able to keep it up long. I've planned a practice triathlon with a couple of my buddies on the 28th, so now I have something to shoot for.

I definitely gave it my all today, so I'm happy with that. I also went faster than I had been going so that's good as well. I'd really like to get my 450 yard time under 12 minutes. I think I can do that if i keep working hard like I did today.

On a side note, I'm down to 160 today. I think I'm going to have to increase my calories, because I must be at a deficit. I don't want to get much below 160, plus I'm assuming having a calories deficit isn't good for getting faster.

Busted my ass for this, especially the last couple hundred yard reps. I was actually thinking about this log when I decided to keep going, and I knew I didn't want to have to come up with an excuse for wimping out. I was able to get 18 seconds faster, so hopefully I'll be able to keep going in that direction.

I hear you about riding in the cold. I am itching to get out on the bike but between the snow, rain and cold I am just not ready. I am doing a sprint tri the end of May so I am not too worried yet.

March 15,

Goal:
Run 8 miles
Achieved Goal

Run:
Distance - 8 miles
Time - 1:10:15
Pace - 8:54

Comments:
This was my longest run yet by a couple of miles. My first 2.5 miles was at a 8.5 minute pace, next few miles were 9.5 minute, then I slowed to a 10.5 minute pace. Also I added a section above with a goal. I'm going to try to set a goal before I run, swim, or bike, then I write down if I met that goal or not. Since I'm not really competing against anyone right now, I believe this will help me push it a little harder. I'm a pretty goal oriented person, so this may seem odd but I think will be good for me.

Comments:
I'm not sure what was going on today, but I felt like my legs were dragging the whole time. I also wasn't nearly as comfortable breathing as I normally am. On Wednesday I'm going to just do drills, because I'm assuming I'm getting out of proper form. Hopefully a solid drill day will correct any problems I'm having.

Pretty solid workout. I'm not working hard on increasing weight, just for the sake of adding number. Rather just making sure I need to put a full effort into completing the 12 reps. Tomorrow I plan on riding, so we'll see how lifting the day before effects my legs on the bike.

March 16,

Bike:
Distance - ?
Time - 1:00

Comment:
This was the first time I road in any type of traffic. I did several loops around Research Park, a corporate building area, and I'm guessing I did 12 miles. Traffic was light and there are only a few traffic lights and stops signs, so it went pretty smoothly. I didn't push it as much as I could have, but getting used to cars next to me will take some getting used to before I'm comfortable enough to really go for it.

March 20,

Goal:
450 yards in under 12:30
Killed it!!

Swim:

10 minutes drills

450 yard swim (times for 50 yard)
0:55
1:07
1:14
1:16
1:20
1:17
1:21
1:20
1:18

Total - 11:08

Comments:
I'm really happy with this swim. I was able to decrease my time by 2 minutes. I really felt like I had good form today. I picked up some spandex type swim shorts, so I'm not sure how much that helped, but it didn't hurt any. I also believe the doing drills beforehand helped, I'll probably start with this most days.

March 21,

Goal:
Bike 6 miles in 22:00
Achieved Goal

Run 3 miles in 25:30
Failed Goal

Bike:
Distance 6 miles
Total - 23:29 (including traffic)

Run:
Distance - 3 miles
Time - 26:34
Pace - 8:50

Comments:
This route requires me to slow down and stop on my bike pretty often for traffic. Which is why I said I hit my 22:00 goal. I spent at least 2:00 dealing traffic. I missed my running goal by a minute, but it was more uphill then I'm used to so I wasn't too disappointed.

I felt pretty good in the water. I was hoping my times would be faster, but I'm still making progress so that's good. I'm still pretty wary of swimming in the triathlon next month. I'm just not comfortable in the water, and I think that is just going to take time to get over. The whole idea of not being able to breathe still freaks me out some. I want to do an open water swim in July, so that will definitely be tough. My buddy is finishing up a lake house, so I'm hoping to get a few long swims in there before July.

You'll smash the tri next month. Spending as much time in the pool as you have been will mean you cruise through it. You can always make up any extra time with the running speed of yours (you bastard )

You just have to finish to be a triathlete.

Changed up my workout for some variety. If anyone has any ideas for things I should change or modify let me know. It's amazing how changing up your routine can affect you. For example my abs are still sore. A good portion of this workout was finding how much weight I can do on the different exercises. Also, on Saturday I'll be doing a practice triathlon with a couple of my buddies and I was making sure I wasn't straining anything too much. I have to make sure and beat them pretty solidly even though it's not a competition.

March 26,

Goal:
450 yards in under 11:00
Failed

Swim:

Warm-up
2 X 50

Distance - 450 yards
Time - 12:08

Comments:
I had planned on running, but rain canceled that so I went for a swim. I didn't have much time because of a appointment. I had to stop a couple of times to let someone share a lane and it kinda messed up the momentum I had going. The first half of the swim I was on target to beat 11:00, but I just couldn't keep it up I guess. I'll be doing a practice tri on Saturday with a few buddies, so hopefully I'll be able to hit 11:00 then.

Hi Joe--

I was talked into training for a triathlon less than 2 weeks ago, so I thought I would follow along with your training progress. Wow...you can really run. I'm not even thinking about speed at this point, but just building up my endurance to get through all three events. I just started swimming last week and I have never been a swimmer either, and I run like a snail. Someone referred me to the Total Immersion site but I'm not sure where to start with their DVD's. I read that you bought a few, but wasn't sure which one you started with. I was never taught freestyle so I'm really just guessing based on what I see others doing.

You seemed to be really focused and making serious progress. I'm guessing you're going to do awesome. You get to be my inspiration.

March 26,

Run:

Warm-up - 5:00

Sprint Intervals - 1:40/0:20

Cool down - 8:00

Totals
Distance - 5.0 miles
Time - 50:00

Comment:
Beautiful day for a run, but I made a couple of key mistakes. First I had heard that many people skip socks while doing a tri sprint, so I figured I try that out. After about 15 minutes I had a blister near the top of my shoe on the back of my right foot. That ended up bleeding pretty good and now I have a great blood stain on my shoe. Second mistake was taking a new route and not really looking at how far it was. I had planned on running 4 miles, and the extra mile was pretty tough.

Kathy,
Check out http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Freestyle...8095687&sr=1-6. It's the latest TI video for freestyle and is a good bit improved from the first DVD and the TI book. TI has been immeasurably helpful for me. I'm not fast yet, but I'm making progress.

March 28th,

Practice Tri:

450 yard swim, 5.2 mile bike, 2.6 mile run

Time - about 55:00

Comments:
So I screwed up with my watch, so I'm not sure how long anything took. It's pretty disappointing, but not a big deal. Another guy timed his and I was a couple minutes faster than him. I did this with three of my buddies, so the competitive spirit definitely changed things compared to a normal work out. The biggest thing I learned was that swim went by really fast. My turns were terrible and I didn't seem to have time to think about form. It seems the adrenaline of racing was able to push me to get more effort, but it also put me into a cruise control type of mode. I'll have to figure this out, because I think I can go a good bit faster if I focus it correctly. My transitions were weird because of where we had to put everything, but I'm glad we practiced them. All in all it was a good time and I learned a few things that I think will make me faster for the real race next month.

Joe--

Will you have to worry about turns when you swim in the tri? I'm just figuring in a tri you'd be swimming from point A to point B straight so that wouldn't be an issue. Except for a mini-tri I may be doing next month that is a 5k, 10 mile bike ride, then a 150 meter swim (6 laps) in a pool...but then it is only 6 laps! It looks like you're doing well focusing on the speed as well as endurance. You'll do well in your tri.
