track kicked ass. 400's 1:45, miles @ 8:12. higher heart rate. am over my pitty party and am just going to run hard between now and race day.
Glad to hear that! I'm not ready to leave my own pity party yet, but I'm gearing up for some hardcore runnin' when I'm 100% well.
I read through your marathon experiences, and dang, Wendy, you've made a real transformation over the last couple of years. I would've never had the guts or the moxie to do that first marathon at 208 lbs.
And I'd love to be running into my 80s. At the Dreher Park Dash 5K a few months back, I met an 80 year old runner who's been doing that since he was a teenager. He's still out there and looking great. So if certain things have to occur in order for this to happen, such as reconfiguring athletic goals, I'm fine with it.
if I don't qualify for boston on november 29th, am I going to want to dedicate another year of my athletic life to going for it again? to double my mileage to 80 hours a week and cut something else out of my life? to risk further wear and tear on my cartilage? I will never be the lithe, kenyan runner. I will always be bulky, amazon wendy, even if I get as lean as would be healthy for me. is another season worth it for me? or do I want to go back to rowing, or switch to the half marathon distance and try to qualify for new york with a 1:44. all questions, don't have any answers.
things I know:
I love running, and want to always run, even when I am in my 90's.
I love how weight lifting has transformed my body and my body image, and I always want to lift weights.
I am athletically promiscuous. I will always want to try new sports--lately it is irish hurling that ed has recently discovered.
boston would be really really cool, and I would love it if I can qualify at my first real attempt to run a fast marathon. but I am also ok with reevaluating my goals if it doesn't happen.
Wendy, excellent and gutsy post. I'll reassure you that you do not have to run 80 miles per week, and that you can keep your sports promiscuity, too.
Maybe instead of trying to analyze your sporadic data, I'll send YOU the last several months of my pre-qualifying training for comparison. You might be surprised.

thank you for this!! truth is, no matter what my time is in a marathon, my body transformation and health will not be affected by weather, GI disturbance, or any number of random factors that can get in the way of running a specific time goal in a race.

you know what? just knowing this is enough for me. I appreciate so much your support and feedback.
I am going after that half marathon at 2 flat, and then I will assess from there.

Cool. I'm glad to be reassuring. My mileage was nowhere near 80 nor was it terribly consistent. I did worry I wouldn't be able to hold the pace, but in the end I stayed "near" the 3:40 group and it all worked out.
And San Fran was lovely that day.

Just dropping by to say I'm sorry that I don't drop by and say anything very often, but you are an inspiration in actions & attitude.
lisa, it is always great whenever you drop in. all of us are really busy, and I don't do a good job of dropping in on your log either! or a lot of logs for that matter. thank you for writing this!

weather is SO much a part of the equation! and I realized I wrote 80 hours instead of miles!! 80 HOURS a week of training, now that would put me in dean karnazes territory, lol.
at my half, I won't have a pace group, but I will have my garmin. at spacecoast, there is a 4 hour pace group, and I know it will help to have a group to "stick" to when the going gets tough.
When is your Half? I signed up for one on Nov 14th. I too am going for sub 2 hours. From my experience, be it only one marathon and one half so far, my training paces seem slower the the real race. With that said, the weather is the biggest factor that you can't control or worry about.
I am really wishing you the best of luck! A BQ is a huge thing. Maybe some day I will put forth that effort. One marathon was enough for me right now. I really like the half distance the best.
hey tcoy, it is november 1, one week from this sunday!! 2 flat should feel easy to me, or I will know that I am not ready to run 4 flat for my full on nov 29.
I really want to switch to the half next season too! I love love love distance, but I am not convinced it is the healthiest, most respectful thing to do to one's body year after year after year.
and there is a part of me that wants to train to get stronger and leaner, maybe even put on some more muscle, and that is so much easier to do when you don't run 40 miles a week. am amazed I have held on to my lean mass like I have!!! blessings of the bulky, I'm guessing.

I agree with you on distance. Not sure if this happens with a lot of first time marathoners, but it has taken me almost a year to really feel like running long again. I too have been able to keep my lean muscle for much of this year running and not lifting hardly at all. Kind of weird.
9. Race Easy
Save the 26.2-milers for fall, since the optimum marathon temperature is 54° F, according to Dr. David Martin of Georgia State University. Every seven degrees above that, your overall time slows by a minute or more.
so today, I ran a half marathon very easy training pace, 4 min run, 1 min walk. heart rate average is 160, and my anaerobic threshold is low to mid 170's. felt easy!!
and according to that blip, I get 2-3 min per mile faster if I run in ideal conditions, which was certainly true of my mile repeats, and that was in the balmy low 60's!!
so with all of that, my time today was 2:15:48 easy peasy, hot as hell, low heart rate meandering!!! yipeeeeee.
oh jeff galloway says 30 sec per mile slower for every 5 degrees above ideal! yikes! florida sux sometimes
That can't be right. I've run 3:38 in 50-55 degrees, and in 75 degrees. His predictor would have put the 75 degree one at over four hours, at least.
I'm so glad your easy half run went well!

misstenacity, heat really affects everyone differently, especially when you carry extra body fat. it really really affects me. extra fat is like a thermal blanket when you run. it is seriously a factor.
I feel awesome! am getting ready for our party--our property is a checkpoint for an elite adventure race tomorrow. so so psyched!

Ooh, that will be fun. Some of the most fun and excitement I've ever had *not* participating in a sporting competition has been working aid stations for ultras.

the elite racers complete the course between 7 and 8 hours. there is a professional triathlete racing, I know her mom, so this will be fun! the weather is going to be HOT.
Ran 6 miles at a 10k PR except my heart rate never got above 150!!! Did marathon pace 4-1 intervals easy peasy. Unreal. I am so happy to be this fit and so much more calm about the outcome of my races.
Rico, one of my running mentors, was at our house until 11pm last night. I feel really good about it all.
((((roland))))
party was a total blast. adventure racers had fun. several even chugged a coronita or two!
Those are my kind of racers.

I so want to be able to pull that off, though I know I still have a ways to go. But I'm looking forward to accomplishing that, because you've made it this far, too, and you've come from a more difficult standpoint (losing a lot of weight).
