thanks everyone!! had a really awful track workout. slow, no power. not sure if I am just not sufficiently recovered from the long effort on the weekend? who knows. dusting myself off, day of rest today. I just hate a bad workout, but I know they happen.

hey tracey, ooh, it was a toughie and my times sucked. saving it for the mile I guess.

ok, I just got off the phone with my friend in austin who is a triathlon coach and ironman finisher.

I had been toying with this idea, and then, at track last night, my program director told me that she might be doing ironman florida next year.

I am so grateful for my friends!! katherine gave me a dose of reality about how many hours of biking it takes to train to just finish one of these, and I really just can't next year.

unless I hit the lottery and retire early.

All good stuff, Wendy. I was channeling you tonight and you better bet your ass, I will be channeling you on Saturday. LOL! I really do need a "WWWD?" shirt to remind me.
And yes, you do NOT want to be one of those chicks crossing the finish lines and everyone only wants to hold you down and feed you a sammich. I've seen SO many of those and I even find it hard to watch them run, because I can't help but think of how their bodies are screaming inside.

awe thanks girls!! was out of town at my in law's. no time to post from iphone.

I know all about ginger's AMAZING performance, am so darn impressed!!

tracey, will head to your log as soon as I get a moment to check out the 5k results!!!

so misstenacity, I did great with galloway looking on. the good news is that I RAN 7:05 with a GREAT HEART RATE, and an effort that felt to me like I could hold it for a 5k.

I could have been a total dumbass and gotten under 7, but my piriformis was talking ever so slightly and I listened. entering the pain cave is a smart thing to do when you are pushing through the normal pain of hard work. but entering into the dumbass pain cave is just, well, being a dumbass. and sometimes it is being a showoff. and I didn't feel the need to to either with Jeff Galloway watching. He later evaluated my form at running school and had some minor tweaks to offer but nothing major wrong with it. running school was a BLAST.

and I need to do all of my weekend chores now, and a busy week, so I hope I don't end up on page 2 again.

oh, and I ran 14 great miles this morning along the lake trail at my inlaws. absolutely breathtaking run. feeling terrific and ready to prepare for my 16 mile training run on saturday.

So, Wendy, how in the heck are the winners of these marathons clocking in with 6-something minute miles for the WHOLE marathon. How is this possible?!?!?

ETA: I see that my friends from high school who always run marathons together came in 5th and 6th for the men's 45-49 division (3:06 and 3:07).

jane, the winners of the major marathons actually run a FOUR something per mile pace for 26.2!!! 6 something per pace is more like my friend mark who did a 2:50 at disney. the world record is 2:04 something I think for men. truly amazing. when you watch the elites run, they look very different from your two friends or mark, and in a whole nuther universe next to someone like me. (9 minute pace for marathon). they just glide along, no wasted movement, light feet, quick turnover. when you watch me run sometime, you will see how clunky, bouncy, foot-slappin' my stride is. I am better than I used to be, but I won't be clocking any 6 something pace for a marathon in my lifetime. if I had been a runner since HS, I might have had a shot, but that ship has long sailed!!!! I will be thrilled with my 9 something, as long as it is 9:10 or less, lol.

your friends are really really quick!! impressive.

mark has since turned into a weighlifter and put on a ton of mass. he actually overshot some and got chunky. no way he's running a 2:50 now!! I think he was 160 back when we were swimming on the masters swim team and I was like 175. we joked about switching weights, but now I am far below that, and he is WAY far above 175--like 230 now I think!!

And they are LIGHT like birds. Light enough that staying healthy is a perpetual concern - they're on that red line of overreaching or coming down with something every single day.

One of the best American marathoners (not even a tiny little African, that is) is 5'8" and 117lbs. That's a dude who can run exactly 5:00/mile for 2 hours and 11 minutes. Yowza.

And when I see people like that, I admire their fastness but I also want to feed them a sammich.

I have to say when I was watching and cheering a couple of weeks back at my brother's marathon, I was really getting in to watching so many different running forms. Really amazing.

Wendy,
7:05!! Holy shite! I bow to you.

yep, misstenacity has it right. so many of the elites walk that line. unfortunately so do some of our local fast fast runners too, and they don't make their living running, not that making a living at it makes it right either. I always am trying to keep that in perspective in my quest for fastness. at some point, it really isn't worth it, and it just goes further into dumbass territory, which I try to avoid. I continue to seek balance, but I certainly can get why folks can get caught up in it.

I know, ginger, isn't it funny to watch different forms?/ and sometimes people with the most awful form, worse than mine, smoke me!

and thanks for the compliment, no bowing necessary. girl, after your performance in your half with no training, you've got a 7:05 in you too if you want it. truly.

hey folks! up early, off this morning to prep for a nutrition talk I am giving to peggy's 103 cross country runners!! (high school). peggy is one of the assistant coaches, her son is one of the varsity runners and fast as all git out. I will leave my students early and head over to her track this afternoon. I brought several food things for show and tell and samples. peggy told me that a lot of the girls are really undereating. I have my trusty calculations for how many calories to sustain 30 miles per week, etc.

after the talk, peggy and I are going to run the 5k cross country course hard!! she says it is a very hilly, slow, sandy course. challenging!! I am so excited to do this!

am also thrilled about our new kayak rack. we have a friend who builds, and he designed the most AMAZING kayak rack. holds our 6, and the top is a huge deck with benches that overlook the state park and creek behind us. we have a real staircase leading up to the deck. still requires some agility tho. ed says we should post a sign that says "you must be THIS fit to enter". ha!

we are going to be a checkpoint for an elite adventure race (canoe, mountain bike, run) and our new kayak rack is where the racers punch in. one of the team captains is a professional triathlete who grew up here, sara mcclarty. so psyched to see her race!!!

the racers arrive by canoe in the morning and by mountain bike at lunch, and we are having a party so they will have some fans!! party starts with bagels and fruit in the morning, and progresses to pizza and beer as the day goes on. lots to do!

tracy, check out runningforfitness.org you can calculate your own needs as a runner! it is a cool website

so my day yesterday was so fun! the party isn't until oct 24, so still time to get ready for that.

I left the med school early, I got a bunch of food for the cross country team. the talk went well! the kids asked a lot of really good questions. we talked alot about postworkout nutrition and demonstrated it with all of the snacks I brought (they had just finished a 45 minute recovery run).

then peggy and I ran the cross country course--5k, so 3.1 miles of hills and soft sand. it was tough!! we had a blast, then I had to quick do the runner's shower of baby wipes and deodorant and head back to the med school--I impulsively stopped at ritter's frozen custard and brought back pumpkin, cookies and cream, and mint choc chip for the students. the lecture on anemia was STILL going on at 5:30--a good hour and half after we usually stop, so the students were really grateful for the ice cream reward break. I very BRIEFLY met with my psychiatry students after for last minute test prep questions and headed back home.

ed and I hung out on the kayak rack/deck and watched the sun set.

busy day today and tomorrow, and somewhere in there, I need to prep food for my carb up friday. 26 miles on saturday!!!

I think it is so cool you went and talked with the CC kids! Our coaches rarely discussed nutrition with us. It was pretty general stuff like don't drink soda...eat lunch everyday, etc.

I did run in high school but as a teen, I wasn't mature enough then to really focus on what it would have taken to become a really good runner. I think I got by with having some talent and natural ability, but if I would have really focused on it like I am capable now, I would have been really good. That coupled with some nutrition advice rather then my fat free 1200 calorie a day obsession, I could have been a lot faster

Maybe the maturity thing is one reason you see so many women in their 30's and beyond being some of the best endurance athletes?

tracey, thanks for the wave!

bree, I had awful nutrition as a high schooler too, but wasn't an athlete then. you are correct about maturity, it is simply the best!

ok, I need to start posting workout stuff here too, esp my weights.

today was all about the TRX. supported pistol squats, side planks, lunges. lots of core. we are all about the marathon right now and all about mobility. LOVE IT.

tonight am shopping again for my carb up tomorrow. I will post the details as I eat, cuz I know y'all love it.

milestone today, 80 pounds gone forever according to the weight watchers at work scale. 80 POUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!
