hey lisa, yeah, have never had it before. won't be repeating it hopefully.
hi celeste! slowly getting back to normal. love the archery photo
thanks greg. I was feeling really great until this!
so today makes rest day number four. am feeling much better. will work out with frank tomorrow, take friday off. and see how I feel for my 13 mile run on saturday. always reserve the right to do part or none of it. when I have been forced to rest before, I typically come back pretty strong after a week off, so I am optimistic.
I was directed to your log by Anne/Realcdn, since I'm also into running and weights. I'm also a Floridian at the moment (got here this past January, and will prolly remain so until February). So, just stopping by to say "hi" and hope you feel better soon.
had a great 70 min beach walk this morning. shopped at the health food store. made yummy breakfast rice--saffron-nectarine inspired by the saffron thread on jpfitness.
am making red beans and rice tomorrow with that buffalo andouille sausage.
oh, the rice. persian rice that I found at the kosher store when I went there to get matzo ball soup the other day. it is a nice, chewy, small grain. perfect with the saffron and nectarines. will freeze extra and add that to greek yogurt for a great brekky for next week.
ed and I are going to a mural unveiling, then dinner at one of our favorite places. wearing my 70's ultra mod, flare jeans, wood platforms tonight!
then back home early so I can rest for my 13 miler tomorrow! have my caffe latte perpeteum mixed up already. endurolytes packed. we take off at 6 am, so it will be a very early wake up call for me!
woah!!! did all 13.32 miles. last 4 were tough! am really glad to have done this pace for this distance!!! so this was a fun little july 4th half marathon in the heat! now relaxing with ed and deciding what kind of critter we're gonna grill today.

Congratulations!!!! That's crazy.... the last long run I remember doing was 10miles. I admire your dedication to running.
Sounds like you recovered in a major way. And you got that long run off the schedule - I have to do mine bright and early tomorrow. And part of me is actually looking forward to it right now.
thanks naive! you can build your mileage back up again.
thanks joyce, yeah, I always look forward to my long runs. track not so much.
thanks jill! the regular marathon plan called for a 9 miler today, so that was the course, but the time goal schedule called for 13 miles. so the first 9 were the regular loop, and I felt GREAT! but by the time we did the extra 4, the sun was out even more, and I really felt it, way more than usual. my pace group was setting a pretty aggressive pace, so I did the smart thing and backed off slightly, always keeping them in my sights. they finished a few hundred yards ahead, but I am so glad I reigned it in some and finished strong. my overall pace was really really great, especially considering the heat, my illness, and the fact that this is my first 13 plus miler since 2007. overall extremely happy with my fitness.
(not a runner so excuse if obvious)
how does the time of a 13 miler compare to a marathon time at this point - is it half the target time, faster than that, slower than that, half the distance at the full distance pace?
good question lisa! running a 13 miler for training and racing a 13.1 mile race are each different events, and the same thing with running a 26 mile training run and racing a 26.2 mile race. today was a training run, so we run much slower than we could run if we were going at race pace. my half marathon race pace at my current fitness would be 8:59 pace or around an hour 57 min for the half. my current fitness for a marathon would be 9:29 pace or around 4 hours and 8 min. our training pace today was between 11 min and 11 :30 pace which is perfect, because I should be training 2 minutes slower than my predicted marathon pace for long runs. with the 91 degree heat and high humidity today, 11 min pace is booking it.
hey espi! thanks. yep, I am cooking up a storm. used my stock pot yesterday to make a big ole batch of buffalo meat sauce--versatile stuff. use it in chili, soups, stews, with pasta.
also made a red beans and rice with buffalo andouille sausage--used a wonderful persian rice--the long skinny, slightly chewy grains were perfect in this preparation.
did the leftover rice just plain with a bit of butter, olive oil and SAFFRON! galya's thread inspired me to use up some saffron that was in my pantry.
this morning, I decided to riff off of galya's white wine/peach/saffron creation. but since alcohol at 8am isn't my thing, I made this waffle!!!
combined hodgin whole wheat baking mix, a bit of buttermilk powder, skim milk, eggs, a combo of safflower oil and lemon flavored canola oil, lemon peel, saffron, and two finely diced white nectarines. they cooked up crispy on the outside, and moist on the inside. the nectarines right now are just so yummy, and this white variety has almost a floral scent, perfect with the zing of the saffron and lemon. served them with a simple sauce that I made by gently heating raw honey, a bit of arrowroot, a bit of buttermilk powder, and crushed raw hazelnuts that I had leftover.
the combo of nectarines, saffron, fresh lemon juice would be yummy in a rice pilaf too--I have this avocado oil that could be perfect in this. and maybe some kind of crushed nut-I like macadamias maybe for this.
sipping one of my bariatriceating.com protein lattes, this one is soothing chai tea. 20 grams of protein.
oooh, forgot to tell you about what I did to jay's japanese eggplant from his garden. ed sauteed some buffalo sirloin and portabellas in a balsamic vinegar reduction.
while I split the eggplants lengthwise, scooped out the pulp, finely diced and mixed with greek dressing. I lined each eggplant shell on both sides with a puree of goat cheese and sundried tomatoes. i layered strips of sundried tomatoes on top of that, then the eggplant pulp, topped with the other half of the eggplant. convection bake at 400 until eggplant is roasty and the cheese is bubbly. it was so yummy!!!! I do a similar thing with squash, but I used piave or a good parmesan cheese, italian dressing, etc etc. also works well with zucchini with a blue cheese/walnut thing.
tom definitely check it out ed had the boxhead shiraz. I like his even better.
mmm, had baby carrots that I needed to use, so I sprinkled with citrus dill spice blend and drizzled macadamia oil. convection roasted them. so simple and so delicious!
I have been reading your posts for some time now and I have finally decided I needed to say Thank You for always being uplifting and inspiring. I have come through some of the same struggles as you have with my weight. My highest being 225. I began running again in Jan., something I have not done in more than 20 years. Everytime I read your posts I am motivated to keep going. Thank You again for being an inspiration to me. I look forward to continuing to watch your progress towards the Boston Marathon. You really give others hope that it can be done!!!
hey blndambtn, welcome to my log! I read through your log, you are definitely well on your way! your running goals sound great. you will have a great time training for and running that half.
day of rest for me today. yesterday afternoon, I got on our erg and rowed a 5k. I really love our erg!! I will be doing some more rowing --it will be excellent cross training for running.
