sipping espresso trying to wake up before going to frank's. was out late with my graduating seniors at a wine bar. only had a glass and a half but I feel horrible! will sleep 9 hours tonight for sure, I will be home late because we have a training sesson at school, but my flight doesn't leave until 2pm tomorrow. yeah!
Workout felt great! Love doing squat push press combos with dumbells. Reverse lunge a with body bar,kb swings. Day of rest tomorrow because Thursday at 1230 will be on a treadmill running with a mask on, getting my fingertips pricked with a lancet every few minutes. V02 max, lactate threshhold testing will help the coaches design a plan for my marathon season. When I had this done in 07, I had a huge aerobic base but not a lot in the way of anaerobic endurance. I will better this time for sure. It will be exciting for me to see how the weightlifting and fat loss have affected my testing parameters. I will also be getting hydrostatic underwater weighing for body fat. Tested that out Sunday by swimming 3 lengths of my brothers pool without taking a breath! About 30 yards or so. All in all, I feel fit and ready to learn at running camp. Hoping that some if the other chicks at camp are athletic clothing fashionistas, because I am bringing the bigass suitcase and enough Lululemon and Lucy stuff to have my own trunk show.
man, I need to find a way to retire. I like the way I get to eat when I don't have to rush to go workout and then work!!
convection roasted 3 pints of cherry tomatoes, because they won't make it intact until I return sunday night--used olive oil, balsamic vinegar, slightest bit of light agave syrup, fresh parsley, oregano, garlic. cracked pepper sea salt
served the roasted cherry tomatoes with an asiago egg white omelette--I fine grated some asiago cheese. YUM!!!!! oh, and a piece of whole wheat bread made fresh from a nearby bakery (at my health food store) with a teensy bit of real butter on it. life is really really good!!
ooh, these tomatoes are really good. am thinking I might pulverize them in the vitamix with some crushed tomatoes, more spices and cook some whole wheat pasta to mix in--I can freeze in individual portions and have homemade sauce with pasta. yummmm. one of the many things I love about being an endurance athlete---we get to have our carbs!
Hey you have a vitamix? That's a hardcore blender, correct? How do you like it? How has it compared with other blenders?
The breakfast sounds tasty btw.

the vitamix rules. it is nothing like a typical blender. more like the ones they use at smoothie king. I just blended up those roasted cherry tomatoes, and I didn't even want to ruin them by adding canned crushed tomatoes. the sauce is perfect! I cooked up whole wheat penne pasta, and am snacking on a little taste right now of the sauce, penne and a bit of fresh parmesan--I have these bowls called MESU, and there is a teeny half cup one, and I put maybe 1/4 cup of pasta with sauce in it. I think these bowls have really helped quell the conflict between my inner foodie and my happiness with my current body weight. I can eat whatever, whenever, I just do small, "tasting menu" portions. I really like the variety, and for some reason, my brain has finally learned the "stop eating" message, so I don't tend to overdo much anymore.
Those MESU bowls look interesting. A long term goal of mine is to get better at eyeballing portions and these look like a good tool.

Exceeding my expectations! My vo 2 max puts me inthe highly competitive range for my age! Body fat is higher than I thought, but I might have not blown all my air out. Am totally motivated to lose fat, and will be doing so gradually over the next 6 months. My running performances will improve markedly as I get leaner. Am not going to put pressure to qualify this training season. I have completed 3 marathons but never raced one. They totally think I should be running with the fast group that I have been running with. Am really thrilled to be at this level of fitness so early in my training and racing career. Boston is totally within my abilites according to some of the best inthe business. It just might not be this year. But I will be earning that Boston bib withinthe next few years
Congrats! Glad to hear that you'll be running with the fast group. Understandable that it might not be this year, but glad to hear that it's within reach in the future.
Anne that is what is so cool , my long run pace IS the fast group pace. It just might not be fast enough because of my lack of racing years to convert that to a 4 flat this year. They totally think I can qualify though, I have the ability for it for sure.
A big part of this plan is cross training, and we rowed on an erg. My rowing time really impressed them, I beat some of the men. And these are fit competitive runners! I had my assessment by the biomechanist too. Very helpful. Am totally stoked!
you got that right, tom. I am sure you had a blast at the summit!
am getting ready to drive in the awful storm to frank's for a workout. all of the fancy phd's at furman agree with frank's original assessment of me, and are thrilled that I have someone so knowledgeable to train with at home.
That's pretty awesome about your fitness level.. you & we all knew, but it's nice to see it confirmed.
Weren't you supposed to get multiple tests for body fat? Not just dunking but also DEXA & calipers? What came out of it..? Ever since you mentioned it, I had been excited as it is rare to get so many different measurements done on the same day so you can really do things under the same circumstances. Dunking is hard (with the air you've got to exhale), so I'm told
Sounds like everything went awesome! Congrats on getting your fitness level up there! I look forward to the day when it's even higher!
Congrats.

Espi, I didn't get dexa done. Couldnt get it scheduled.Underwater weighing 31.4 , caliper 25.2, inbody 320 25.7. I think the truth is probably hi 20's, but I'm not going for the post mortem any time soon, LOL. I likely didn't blow all my air out.
Here is the most important thing I took away from this whole bodyfat deal- I now have renewed motivation to slowly get leaner. 150 scale weight on the nose today. So I have maintained 150 going on three months now pretty painlessly. Have not tracked a single calorie. With the added training volume and, more importantly intensity, the furman coaches think I can drop 10 pounds this year. I run very very well for someone who carries as much bodyfat as I currently do. It will only get better as I lean out.
One of the coaches said that he believes fat loss happens on the track! My nutrition is already pretty good. I need more intensity.
Hmm I don't know if you can make your body lose fat 'easily' when training so hard as you do now, since that intensity does require a lot of extra fuel to recover. It can be done.. the real test would be whether you can not just maintain intuitively, but also fuel yourself intuitively so that you can both improve your fitness levels as well as lean out some.. however, I've got full confidence in you
Too bad about the cancelled DEXA-scan as that one is the real golden standard nowadays.. I've heard about the problem before = not blowing out enough air = skewed results, so I wouldn't put too much faith in those numbers.. I'm fairly convinced your DEXA would be similar to the other 2 numbers. But hey, it's only a number... how you feel , perform & look is so much more important.
Meanwhile, I've got to ask you this.. how on earth can you find the energy to try out new recipes.. my new year's resolution had been to eat more 'real food' for my refeeds & free meals.. and as of today I'm still relying on the same ole' same ole' convenience foods.. there's a kind of blockade here. I'm totally happy with my diet foods and eat the same meals most days (with small variations), but while I like trying out new foods, I'm not comfortable preparing them..
How can you change this 'fear' of experimenting with food? I've got the Flavo(u)r Bible and yet.. haven't read it yet. As if I'm afraid that if I go 'full hog' I'd be fat in no time again..
Yeah, I used the word "painlessly" when referring to maintenance. Maintaining 150 has been so much easier than I thought it would be. I don't think losing 10 pounds will be easy, but over the course of a whole year I think it is doable. I have never trained as intensely and with as much volume as I am getting ready to do. Will be slowly building to almost 40 miles a week. If I continue to fuel like I have been, I believe that I will slowly return to a leaner body.
Regarding the cooking, I truly believe that working on emotional issues with a professional has been the key to ending my tendency to overeat good food. After many years of hard work, I just don't use food the way I used to. So fir example, the cherry tomato marinara with pasta that I made before my trip? I had a small taste as I was cooking. I had a somewhat larger portion for lunch with ed. It doesn't even occur to me any more to continue eating beyond satiety because I know for sure I will enjoy good food again soon. In fact, I paired said pasta with a previously prepared grilled chicken breast, which I will eat for lunch today. I don't live in a diet world anymore, although my daily fare is full of healthy nonprocessed food. I don't feel the need to restrict myself to certain safe diet foods.
Breakfast today was a whole grain pumpkin cacao waffle, a hard boiled egg, maple agave syrup, an orange. Fruitein green shake prior to rowing on the erg. Rowed 5000 meters much faster than my 5k running PR with half of the effort.
All in all, my main goal is performance. If fat loss is a side effect of training hard and fueling well than great! But I won't be going on a specific calorie deficit like I tried to do before. Since the coaches at furman have done this a time or thousand, I tend to believe them when they tell me that the training I am about to do promotes fat loss.
Oh the predict me right now today at a 4:14:30 marathon. Fat loss and training will make that faster!
