Well, I'd have to say that monthly cycle was much more of a weight fluctuation when I was lighter than heavier (not counting the last few years, where I'm on a 3mo cycle) so, I could see it being that and something that before now went relatively unnoticed, since iirc you're down a bit overall.
I'm sure you'll come out fine. This is a place to express fear, resentment, and just plain frustration about the fact that we can't control (nor explain) this shit. And it's easy for the rest of us to tell you to not worry about it, because it's not our asses that feel like shit about the scale (today). So since you're not going overboard and starving yourself while attempting to run a marathon to get those pounds off, I'd say you're in a decent place, even if it is frustrating as hell.
On the bright side, you're fully aware of all your accomplishments, you're strong and pretty and have plenty of rest time now that you're not working. Hell, maybe that's part of it, even. Well, prolly not the pretty part. I can't see how being pretty makes the scale jump up, unless it hates you for being beautiful.
Aoife, you always make me smile and laugh. Thank you for your post - I'm going to make sure to reread it when I'm feeling cranky. You absolutely understand where I'm at - and you're right. I am just expressing frustration, but NOT going overboard and doing something unhealthy to lose pounds at any cost.
And LOL about the beautiful stuff - you're very sweet, but now I KNOW you need glasses

Just a thought anyway.
Thanks for the thought - one of my friends is a dietitian (RD/LD) and she's awesome. I've spoken to her frequently about food stuff, and we've ruled out some things. I may try probiotics (I HAVE some, I just always mean to start taking them "tomorrow" ) just to see if I process food better. I know many here swear by them. I used to be on a few prescriptions, and I haven't been on ANYTHING for a while, and it's just so nice to NOT have to remember a pill in the morning, so I haven't wanted to start up again. But I should.

Oh well - that's what tankinis were invented for, right?
Please don't get me wrong here. Aoife really is right. I come here to vent frustrations (and share successes) and get feedback and advice and support. But overall I'm doing really well. I'm frustrated at times with the scale numbers and my progress, but I'm NOT freaked out or depressed. I need only look back at pictures from a year ago (or 12 years ago) to know that I have come a long way and I'm only going to keep getting better from here... It's slow, and I don't always win the daily "battle" but I WILL win this "war."
No karate tonight, because we're grappling (aka wrestling) and I am just not in the mood to be the only woman being sat on and twisted into a pretzel by a bunch of stinky sweaty men.
I'm thinking I should take up karate...

Nope. I have excellent vision, and I know what you actually look like, other than just a kyoot hamster, so sorry, yer just gonna have to suck it up and take it like an elefant-man.

Ok seriously...I have glasses already and I agree with the Aoife!

Right on! I am totally with you on this one. Plus...it has to move at some point after all! Perhaps the rest, relaxation and re-feed on vaca will be just what you need!

Well, I'm hoping to not do TOO much of a refeed on vaca... we'll see... Since all of December was one gigantic friggin' refeed...

I drink a TON of water, and I keep my sodium pretty low. Sometimes a meal out can account for the gains, but in general... I dunno!!! Thanks for the suggestion though... potassium??? Really??? Affects weight? (Ah heck, EVERYTHING affects weight).

Aw thanks guys...
And don't laugh, but the plan is to have the laptop with us. I'm sure I'll need some down time to rest, so I'll probably check in even more than I should... I don't THINK I'll be gone from here for 2 weeks... we'll see

Or try to combine the daily weighing with noting down where you are in your cycle.
It could be that the effect has become way more pronounced than in the past (no wonder with more libido etc) but I'm getting the biggest unexplanatory wt bumps when ovulation approaches. There's barely anything diet-related that bloats me nowadays, even with all the food sensitivities I'm having.
Once the ovulation has passed, wt will drop down again and only because I tend to eat like a pig in the week (it's getting THAT short yes) after it, wt will go up again. Others only see that bump with menstruation approaching.
Combining those 2 things will make it far easier to accept sudden whoosh-ups (your log is the first one where I ever read that term, but it makes perfect sense).
An eye-opener to me was also the wt gain after resuming training.. more DOMS = more inflammation = more water retention. Since I rarely take more time off than 4-5 days, I'd never seen that happen before.. moreso since normally I'd gain a ton of wt during time off, not see BW go down and then up again when training again..
In your case, totally related indeed to the new Oly training
This is really interesting. I hadn't thought about how inflammation could play into the whole weight fluctuation/water gain thing. It makes sense, though. Bytsi, I haven't lost a pound in the last three weeks (well, I'm eating a lot more than you; that could be my particular issue!) but I can already see my pants fitting differently. The daily scale thing can be frustrating.

Looking at all the posts, I think you're outvoted on this one .

Now THIS is a message I need to post on my wall. It's so hard to keep the big picture in mind when you're stuck in the day-to-day stuff. I'm sorry that you've been frustrated of late--and I'm grinning to think of you kicking butt and keeping going. Thanks for sharing your encouraging thoughts!
Holding steady at 142.5. sigh... Maybe I should try eating crap all day and not moving and see if I lose weight that way...?
(nah, did that - we called it "my 20's" and it wasn't pretty).
Another fun workout today with Jason the sadist... er... trainer... will log below...

My pants are fitting differently too - tighter. Or at least not looser... which they SHOULD be. Ugh.
Thanks for the encouragement
Ok - OLY WORKOUT with Jason
(I told him how sore I was last week, and said he can't do that next week when I have to sit on a plane all day Saturday - but then I stupidly said it was ok to kill me again this week. So he did.)
Warmup - kettlebell - squats, 2-hand swings, figure 8's, lunges with kb hand-switch btw legs, push press, snatch, maybe 1 or 2 other things... I asked him if it's bad if I'm dead and sweating and gasping just from the warmup
OH Squat (snatch grip) - 3x5 w/ 25# (I think - used a mini-bar with little baby plates)
Power snatch from below the knee - 4x5 w/ 45# bar
Front squat - 3x8 @ 65#, 1x8 @ 75# (most reps at this weight, not a new weight record)
Split Jerk - 2x5 @ 45#, 2x5 @ 55# (He forgot these, but they were written down, so we went back to 'em just before hypers/abs)
Power Snatch from mid-shin (about where the bar would be with plates on it) - 4x5 @ 45#
Snatch Pull - 4x5 @ 90# (40kg)
Hyperextensions SS w/ Abs - 10 recerse hypers on RH machine, 10 situps on GHR machine with 25# plate, 20 Russian twists on GHR machine. Repeat x3.
Everything shaking, sweating, wobbly - DONE!
My snatches are still really difficult. I have a LOT of trouble putting all the parts together - hips first, keep the bar close to the body, shrug, don't jump out too wide, toes forward, drop into a squat, plant my feet so I don't fall on my ass, keep the bar locked over my ears.
On the other hand, the Split Jerk feels really natural to me and he said my form is good without much to pick on at all. These are FUN!!!
We're going to work on cleans more next week, I think... he prefers teaching the snatch first.
It's nice to see that you're having so much fun with your Oly lifting. It looks really hard, but fun because it is so challenging. And I'm about where you are with the weight thing. I really cleaned things up over the past three weeks and still I'm not seeing any change. Haven't been moving as much, but I'm keeping my calories low and thought I should be seeing something budge.
because the food and water weighs that much. Don't worry, that 3# will come off after a nice huge dump.
LOLOL because I'm 12!
Sorry the scale isn't cooperating. Believe me, I know how you feel. Especially when you're doing everything right. I guess that's when you have to rely on the old pants-o-meter.

I think we're in a very similar place... the scale SHOULD be moving, based on kcals and GWFit... it will... eventually... it has to!

Maybe the 2 weeks off is just what you need.
I know I need the SUNSHINE!!! There is a gym on the ship and at the resort we're staying at (doing Disney after the cruise) do I do plan to continue workouts... probably more of a deload (sound good Karla? )
Today down 1/2# to 142. I ALMOST could get the scale's little balance bubble to stick at 141.5, but not quite... but considering I had Oly yesterday and usually get swole (though not too bad YET today), I'll take it.
Stairmaster this morning 35 min at moderate intensity SS. Not gasping, but not just strolling along either... didn't take my pulse .
Teaching women's self defense in a little while... gotta get going!
I really do relate to your frustrations and I am glad that you aren't taking the advice to ditch the interval work. It is good for us and I am just now realizing that I did ditch it and it has affected my endurance.
So, I am way behind in here and just got all caught up. Keep doing what you are doing and it will all work out. It will.
When do you leave for vacay?

I'm sorry that the scale is being such a pain in the ass right now Bytsi.... hopefully it will get moving in the right direction again soon, and a vacation might be just what you need to do it! Relax, have fun, and forget about the stupid scale!

Wow, Bytsi, those Oly workouts are impressive. When I brought my bar home, my son said, "Isn't that a little big for you?" I guess it does look a little funny to see someone 5'2" slinging a 7' bar around. He's 6'2" so I think that makes it even more humorous looking to him. I can only imagine how mighty you look slinging the bar with weights! Woohoo.
Hey fellow Rafa fan... ESPN2 right now he's playing in the Australian Open
I missed it!!!
Oh well... he'll be back, right?

Thanks Ginger - nice to hear someone else with a similar experience. I won't do HIIT, I won't do the 15-minute and DONE but can't move for the rest of the day except to eat more workouts... but some intervals are good for me and my goals of being STRONG and able to do what I want to do (in this case, karate).
Vaca - this time next week we'll be at the hotel in Miami where it's WARM and there's no SNOW, getting ready for boarding the ship on Sunday

LOL Paula - I'm only 5'2" too (but much bigger than you!!!). I had been doing my DL's with 35# plates as the "base" since I'm so short - even my 200# lift was with 35's as the base... but I think from now on I'll do 45's - just like the pulls will be in Oly lifting. Even if I'm short, it's silly to handicap myself, right? But yeah, I think we just look all the more macho with those big heavy bars and plates
I just had to make sure this got into my log - Aoife was kind enough to give me advice about my snatch technique and I want to be sure it's noted where I can refer back to it:
Quote:
Ok, here's your problem:
your grip is too narrow. You need to widen it. It would help if you had a longer bar.
