YAY - Kathy's coming to the Summit!!

I just went to the Continental airlines site cuz I knew they have a hub in MO (I think Nick or someone mentioned it)... but I've had good luck with Expedia in the past, or if there's an airline that has a hub near you (Southwest is at BWI, I think, if that's close) you can check to see if they fly direct...

Europe - cool!!! Never been there, but it's on my list of things to do... And there's always next year

I see you already got the answer: what you aptly called claw grip is officially a hook grip. Didn't know that one either nor was it explained to me that I had to use that grip. I was just told to use overhand grip for my deadlifts from now on and that grip where you tuck and then squash your thumb underneath the fingers to keep gripping (w/o straps) is a given.

Seems like how every trainer is different. Mine barely touches the intermediate steps and just got me started on the complete lift almost straight away, except that with the snatch I didn't need to go into a squat until several weeks later and didn't really get a whole lot of cues. That's why I've been searching on the Internet so much and it finally clicked when finding the NSCA videos.. watch these closely, they are invaluable for understanding what you need to do!

http://www.nsca-lift.org/videos/displayvideos.asp

Sofar it seems that most others here have trainers that do a bit better when it comes to technique. However, i shouldn't grumble as it's already wonderful I get my sessions for free, viz. don't need to pay extra apart from just paying my membership fee (30euro (~45USD)/month for once a week).

But now I'm jealous twice.. not just of your new & awesome gym but also that you're going to the Summit.. I don't think I'll be coming.. it's just too much money to fly. Yet.. who knows since Galya flew in from Bulgaria last time? How much is it to participate, when does it happen?
Thanks Espi - yeah, I can't believe how quickly my log grew - which would explain my huge one from 2008!
I knew hook grip, I was just too tired to think of it!!!

It's really interesting how different trainers approach things. Mine said he starts with snatches and starts from the top of the body first, getting that part right before adding the lower half movements - which is the order of progression we went through, to some extent, in my session. Maybe I shouldn't assume that he'll slow down next time? Whatever he does, it was fun!

Thanks for the link - I'll check that out!

And all the info about the Summit is in the main training discussion section - there's a thread with the link to it, or you could ask Nick any questions... It's May 15-17 in Kansas City, Missouri...

I have a little headache and didn't sleep well, but I'm gonna head out for some LISS cardio in a little while, see how I feel then...

Snatches immediately got waaaay better once I practiced OH squats for myself.. if I'd learn others how to snatch I'd get them started top down too since staying stable at the top is the hardest part after keeping the bar close at all times up to the chest .. the rest seems easier in comparison.

Back from the gym.
20 min elliptical, 25 min walk 3.2 with 8 incline. HR btw 65-75% for total of 45 min.
Headache a little better...

Went to the new gym and didn't know anyone. I'm SO comfortable at my old gym, but I need to push myself, even just going in for cardio. I'm sure I'll know more of the weekday people (already ran into so many when I went in last week)... But I felt stupid, couldn't figure out the dvd player - then finally did and I had the wrong disc (I had grabbed disc 2 and I hadn't seen 1 yet!) so I just watched tv. At least the individual tvs on each machine are nice, cuz I could flip channels and not worry that someone else was watching that one!

So... that's it for today, I think.

Come on you two!! Get in gear and book the flights and come to the summit. Join us for all the fun! I am leaving Sunday in the evening too. Don't worry Kathy it will be fun and you won't even know that you are stretching yourself by that time.

Hey have fun in Oregon next month!

I love reading everyone's training logs and goals, because it's inspiring to read all the cool stuff you're doing. Black belt in karate--awesome!! I did karate for about six months several years ago and loved it, but it didn't fit into our family's schedule at the time. (Or our budget...) It's definitely on my to-do list, though. Congrats on your brown!

"Dieting" brings up all kinds of obsessive thinking for me, but at the same time, I want to learn to be aware of my diet in a way that enables me to make healthier choices without feeling like I'm "not allowed" to eat. So far (all three days of it!) It's going pretty well.

How do you work on a peaceful relationship with food? Do you have any particular strategies?

I hated this about switching gyms...it's so weird being in there the first time! You get so used to those familiar faces...it makes you feel so much more comfortable. You'll start to know the new ones tho...and then you'll knock them dead when you pull your first 200lb deadlift!!! Happy new gym...happy your headache was better!

You've had an exciting couple of days there Bytsi! The oly lifting sounds like a blast. I'd love to try it, but there isn't a trainer at my gym that does it. I'd have to go someplace else to do it.
And the summit! How fun. I'm still in the considering/undecided stage.

Wow, how do I work on it? Well, I try to catch myself when I'm being mean to myself. I try to notice "you're a pig" kind of thoughts and stop myself and just acknowledge that I'm hungry and eating and try to make good choices. I try to shut down the black and white "all good" or "all bad" thoughts if I realize I'm having them. So I can say "you're allowed to eat X, just not the whole box at once." Or work on feeling like "it's ok to feel hungry" basically...

I tend to get mad at myself and feel like I'm bad because I feel hunger and, God forbid, respond by eating.

Thanks - headache finally faded away... I think I was just surprised cuz I thought I'd know more people, but maybe it was just the Sunday crowd. I went to the old gym today cuz my friend was meeting me there... I don't think I'll fully utilize the new place yet because my workout buddy won't switch gyms with me.

You should come!!!!!!!!!
And the ONLY real reason I joined the new place was the Oly training, although they do have a lot more/newer/nicer equipment than my old place...

Oh yeah - I meant to post: a workout!! LOL!

Random messing around lifting today - I want the trainer to look at my log and make some suggestions for me, since I'm kinda in limbo with my lifting til I figure out a direction.

Pullups / Chinups - Pullups 5 bw, Chinups 5 bw. Skipped the assisted ones.

Hang Shrug - thought I'd practice just a little - 5x45#

Front Squats - 5x45#, 4x65#, 4x 85#

Back Squats - 4x85#, 4x105#

Back Extensions 2x12xbw

Superset Perfect Pushups / Inverted Rows - 3x10(e) bw

Barbell Shoulder Press - did these from a back squat position to try to get used to keeping my arms farther back, so dropped the weight down - 3x8x40#

Bodpod tomorrow morning

I'm excited for you to have an Oly lifting coach, too!

Thanks, Karla. I will. It will me my first time and I'll be flying in to Portland (cheaper than flying straight into Eugene), and my daughters and I thought we'd spend a few hours checking out Portland before driving back down to Eugene. Any 'musts'?

Karen - YAY that you'll probably come to the Summit - I hope so!

Kara - nope. Not a good surprise at all. Honestly, not even ready to talk/post about it yet. Too unhappy right now.

Weight 141.5. Enough of this fucking around. I'm SICK of it. Just fed up. When the trainer did the bod pod this morning, my weight was 140.8 so my scale is fine... it's me. I'm frustrated. I need to figure this out.

Cardio last night - karate. Today (after bod pod) 45 min stairmaster LISS (HR around 65-70%).

I'm hungry, I do NOT handle hunger well, especially in the evening.

I shouldn't let a stupid number upset me, but it did. I need to drop the subject for now.

I think you've gotten at the key to change--and the reason changing our attitudes toward food is so challenging. It's not about changing what we eat, but about changing our thinking patterns. And that's a slow process!

It's encouraging to think about progress, rather than results. Am I less self-critical than a year ago? I think so. If we've made progress in the past, we can make more going ahead!

Meh, it's just a number. As long as you continue to make progress it's just one data point. How were you measuring your bf levels in the past? How did they compare to the bodpod? I can't find one in my area so I haven't had one done.

Thanks Cheryl & Tracey... I just need some time to process it all. And it's been a rough year-end as far as weight/progress.

I know it's just a number, intellectually. But emotionally, even though I was trying to be prepared, it was hard to see. I was doing 7-site calipers in the past, and felt the trend was quite accurate (even if the "absolute" number might not have been perfect). But I lost access to that when my job was gone. Bodpod came out 7% higher. Which is a freakin' LOT. I went from being on the heavier side of lean to just plain fat.

I've seen other people here, know that the pod seems to measure people significantly higher than calipers. But it hurts to see that number printed out in black and white.

Bodpod came out 7% higher. Which is a freakin' LOT. I went from being on the heavier side of lean to just plain fat.

I've seen other people here, know that the pod seems to measure people significantly higher than calipers. But it hurts to see that number printed out in black and white.
Well, you're still the same weight and bodyfat as you were BEFORE the bodpod right? Nothing else changed other than the analysis and interpretation of it. Most people under-estimate their bodyfat levels. Shit, I had a trainer do a 7-site caliper on me and he came out with 12% and I KNOW that's not right, I was more like 16 or 17 at the time. As long as you use a reliable method to measure PROGRESS (scale, measuring tape, pictures, calipers, podpod, dexa, etc) it's all details. So the bodpod says you're 7% higher than you thought...so what? It doesn't mean anything. Personally, I think bf% is over-rated...there, I said it. Just keep on keepin' on. Don't let it get you down.

I'm with Jill on this.
Don't let the results get you all worked up. Use it as motivation or whatever. You have made great progress and will continue to do so, regardless of a number.

As someone who's been struggling of late too, I can certainly sympathize. I'd suggest looking at your food intake and your workouts, and try to find a balance between them. A balance where you feel worked, but not so exhausted you eat the calories back. Daily measurements of weight/waist would help to stop trends as they happen, particularly if you keep rolling averages of 5-7 days.

The upshot? Don't take yourself so seriously and smile - you've got a lot going for you, particularly the desire to better yourself which will see you through the current crisis. (I'd say this to myself as well.)

Do you have to make so much sense? Ok... you're right. Nothing changed, I still look/weigh/feel the same (well, slightly more embarrassed since the new trainer got to see my in my swimsuit). I think I knew what the number would be, but this tiny little part of me didn't want to let go of the hope that it would be lower.

Thanks Ginger.

Ok. I took some time, some deep breaths... watched a distracting tv show while walking on the treaddie for some NEAT...

It's just a number. It's a stupid mean fucked-up number, but it's just a number.

I think part of my reaction is my general frustration with myself since early December. My break week turned into an extended break, but I never just said "it's ok, let December go" so I have been mad at myself for a while, and doing a lot of negative self-talk. I've made some all-too-half-assed attempts to rein myself back in, and I need to just buckle back down.

My goal weight may need to be lower - but I never said any goal weight was set in stone anyway... and if I get there and I'm ok there (wherever "there" is) then that's where I'll stay.

Crap. I mean, it's not like I can't fit into 4/6 jeans (depends on the brand). I used to shop at Lane Bryant, and I didn't just suddenly end up back in plus sizes again...

I wish I could drop 10# in a month and not feel competely miserable in the process (thus not sticking to it and NOT dropping 10# in one month). But that's not me.

I have some decisions to make:

I LOVE working out hard. Heavy weights, sweaty cardio. But I don't do well at maintaining enough of a deficit to lose significantly when I do that. I need to find my balance in all of this.

I also need to find a routine now that I'm out of work, because I'm really feeling a bit lost in all of this change. I need to put some structure into my life because without it I too easily start mindless munching and stop getting much NEAT. So I need to investigate my options (volunteer, take a crap job just to have somewhere to go, wait for the "right" job which could take a long time, etc etc) and then pick one.

AND I have to get ready for our vaca in 3 1/2 weeks. Is it totally screwed up of me to be scared of the vaca because I'm NOT where I wanted to be in terms of food / body? I don't feel ready for a 2 week diet break, but I also don't want to ruin my vacation obsessing about food. I have to find some BALANCE here in my life so I can enjoy myself without gaining 20# in 2 weeks and coming back even worse-off.

ETA: Tom, we cross-posted. Funny how we both came to the conclusion that I need to find balance here. FWIW, I do chart weight daily.

Agree bytsi - think of what your bodpod would have been at your heaviest and look how much progress. Put your before pic next to a current pic. Look at trends! The number is useful for trending , not useful for a mindfu$k. I had dexa done, which is likely the most accurate. Prob better than hydrostatic. It was less than a half a percent different then calipers. But my caliper person is an exercise physiologist with tons of caliper experience. Any big hospital has those kind of people. I see her once a month- costs $5. I use it fir trending only. If you can find somebody like that locally it really helps mentally to see that number go down steadily. I couldn't afford dexa that often nor would I want the radiation LOL.

Sadly, my friend is an experienced EP with tons of caliper experience. And more than one person at my old job (all EP's) did calipers on me (7-site) and they all came out pretty close. So why the pod was so much higher is beyond me... mindfu$k is certainly right.

Bytsi, so sorry about the stupid Bod Pod. Everyone is right, though, which you've realized--you have made AMAZING progress in the past year, you are looking good (and better and better each month), and you are fit and athletic. I do understand why you would be upset though, being a numbers person myself, sometimes I go by #s more than I should, whether it be the scale, bf %, how much I lift, my Word Challenge score, etc. You look like you're on the right track thinking things though and making a plan. So, anyway, my .02.

So what about a rotation? Diet down for a few weeks, have a week at maintenance to get in some heavy lifting, rinse, repeat. Decide what that rotation will be to keep you sane, give you regular diet breaks, and let you akshully lift heavy sometimes here and there.

eh, is a thot.
