I'm not sure where the post went to, but you'd asked for opinions on your blog about what Jillian Michaels said. Just wanted to post something I'd come across on Mens Health (from Alan Aragon's Q&A column)
Q: I'm losing pounds but not inches. What's wrong?
A: My guess is you're not weight-training and eating enough protein. Doing both is key to eliminating fat and building muscle. Resistance training burns calories during your sessions and stimulates your metabolism afterward. To achieve the second goal, fortify your diet with either 6 additional ounces of meat or 2 scoops of protein powder; each option yields about 40 grams of protein.

Honestly the question was geared toward the general attitude that Jillian had - She made it seem as if the scale was the only "True" Indicator of whether a person was making changes to their body. Which I think we all know is not a good indicator.
While I like this season of biggest loser, I'm having some real issues with it as well.

I always have issues with the show. And I'm pretty positive that much more would make more sense if they didn't edit it the way they do, you know, for maximum drama.
That said, I think, when you're talking about large enough people, the "no pounds but inches" thing is weird. Does it happen? Sure. Is it a step in the right direction? Sure. Is it "real" progress for someone who is over 100 pounds overweight? Your muscles tighten up, you may even build some maybe, but overall, you're still not getting the pounds off, and that's what they're trying to do for these people to WIN the GAME. That's their first and foremost goal. Lose WEIGHT to WIN. Muscle can be maintained, and more added again, but they want these people thinner fast and hopefully with the understanding of how to keep it that way. Get in, Get out.
I think the impression the show gives, that you're not working hard enough if you're not grinding yourself into the ground 6-12 hours a day on very little food (relatively) is bad. But, it does show you how to get it off fast and move on toward the rest of your life. And in that case, pounds trumps inches.
We use inches, pictures, strength/conditioning improvements all as markers, and sometimes in lieu of the progress we really want… that bugger scale to just MOVE.
I didn't see this, so yes I'm partly talking out my ass, haven't seen a single episode this season. But I'll bet, just like every other thing on that show, what was said before the show got to the editors made more sense in context than what came out for public consumption.
And in the context of the show itself, pounds trump inches in order to win that stupid game.

Oh ok - well that's pretty patently false in my book. I've been seeing reduction in my waist even though my weight is going lower slower.

*sigh* this is been a very crappy day in terms of food. Work was just one big blur and this weekend isn't going to get any better.

Today was nice and relaxing. Bob and I went over to Brazos Bend State Park and walked along 2.5 miles worth of trails. The coolest thing was a flock of crows that were riding the thermals over the river.

Working on that, I want pictures of some real Texas Longhorns (and I am not talking about the football team).

The herd I have in mind is over at NASA. They have some of the longest horns I've ever seen.

2.5 hours later, I have my garden hoed, weeded and thinned. I retilled the other row, I planted some cauliflower and some red cabbage plants, and I planted seeds for scallions and lettuce. I'm also in a much better mood that I started this day in. When I finally woke up this morning, I was in Mega-Bitch mode. Poor Bob.

For the extreme south this is about the only time of the year you can grow anything like cabbage, broccoli, and peas. Otherwise it's too hot.

Everyone I know who's up north is saying that Mahler... particularly those folks in the NE.

I just came in from most of an entire day outside as well, working in the garden. Yay for living in a warmer area! (Until the hell of summer comes anyway...)
How big is your garden? Ooh, ya gotta get some garden pics for me this year so I can see. I love garden porn!
We are having record amounts of rain (and therefore snow in the nearby Alps) this year. I also can't wait to get into the garden and plant. Beginning of April for me, I think
Diane:
My garden is quite tiny actually. It's maybe 10'x25'
It's been a while since I gardened and I did not want it to get out of control and become so overwhelmed that I said "To heck with it".
So I get two nice wide Row/Beds.
The Radishes were the first thing to Pop up that I planted from seed.
I harvested the first tiny radishes yesterday
I also have Icicle Radishes
I think the next time I plant radishes, I'm going to do more of bed approach rather than little short rows.

Now the pics are loading for me. Yay! Thanks for the garden porn!!
Your dirt look beautiful and I'm jealous! We have hard, red clay here and there between rocks. It's taken us years to make it more plantable -- and it still sucks compared to how yours looks.
So what's up with your beets and lettuce? Other than beets being evil, nasty creatures that don't deserve to live anyway...
I will confess, Mrs. B (and her mother May she rest in peace) did a lot of amending to the soil. Most of the news paper and paper that comes into my house gets shredded and put onto the soil. We've even gone out into the pasture and picked up horse apples to add to the soil.
I'm not sure what is up with the beets and the lettuce. I think we had a cold snap right after I planted them and they just didn't thrive. My carrots are kind of dicey lookng too although they are doing marginally better.

I knew that dirt was too purty to not be "enhanced"!
