Oddly enough, when my water intake slips, I tend to eat more. It does seem to confirm that sometimes hunger is thirst.

Crossposting here--copy and paste from daily thread. I'll check back when I can but got to run now.

Thought I'd post a quick note I may be MIA for the next little bit. We may have to evacuate so am getting ready just in case. The Puyallup is flooding now and the crest isn't expected for several hours yet and it's expected to top out at 20 feet over flood stage. Previous record was I think about 12 feet so it may hit us this time around. The other possibility is that we'll be just fine here just unable to get out and may end up losing power. Anyway talk to everybody later. Take care. This is pretty crazy Washington weather we're having.

Just checking in to see if you've turned into AquaWoman yet. I was just reading a news article yesterday on the flooding in your neck of the woods. Looks pretty hairy!

We ended up not having any problems with the flooding after all although just down the road people did. School closed early on Wednesday and then on Thursday there was a late start but they cancelled school buses in our area due to local flooding.

Thanks for asking.

Default Weekly Summary:

I am just going to post a summary for now as between the flooding and the forum being down I wasn't able to post daily. However even though I wasn't here much I did track everything in Crosstrainer so I have all the data.

January 1st-January 10th summary:

Metaburn Calories: Goal 1500-1700. Yes 7/10 days to metaburn goals. 2 of the 3 days over were pre-planned free meal/wine nights. Even with the extra my January average intake is 1648.
Metaburn Macros/Protein Intake: Goal >90g. Yes 7/10 days. The 3 missed days all had >80 grams so am pleased overall.
Metaburn Training: Yes, total 4 cardio, 3 weight training, 3 recovery, and 3 rest days. My intensity on the cardio is a tad bit higher than recommended but I feel fine and I need the cardio for blood sugar control so am not worried about it.
GoWearFit info: (5 day average) Average calories burned: 2503; Average deficit: -773 calories
Weight: Today 249.5 (-1.5 since Jan 4th)

I love the gofit. The info is helpful. I plan to track my food intake, the data from gowearfit and see how it compares with my weight changes over a few months at least. So far the burn recorded matches my predicted maintenance I calculated based on Leigh's activity quiz. I can see why sometimes my weight loss has stalled however or been really slow. A 200 underestimation of calories burned combined with a 200 calorie overestimation of food leaves only a 350 calorie deficit. Your 1 lb a week loss is now down to 2 lbs a month.

It's also amazing how much less active I've become in general. It wasn't that long ago I was easily averaging 15,000 steps daily on a pedometer. But between leaving floor nursing and all the issues I've had with my ankle my daily steps are about half of what I used to do. Something to work on now that my ankle is less painful.

Patient education, CDE. I work one or two days a week for an endocrinologist and the other in diabetes ed through one of the hospitals. When I did floor nursing I primarily worked on call in the float pool and was often assigned to specialty units like critical care, rehab, oncology, etc so got to see a lot. For many years I did both floor nursing and education but it was too difficult to keep up with all the specialty area competencies so I dropped floor nursing.

Floor nursing is also something I was encouraged not to continue by my podiatrist/ankle surgeon. I have a bit of traumatic arthritis in the joint and there was a distinct possibility that the physical demands would shave off a few years of function for me. If it was my knee or hip I would have had a joint replacement years ago but ankle surgery options are rather ugly in terms of recovery and also not too successful. But it's not so bad I need a fusion now and so the hope is to hang on as long as possible and try to preserve what joint function I have left and pray for new technology.

My ankle feels much better overall now but I still can't handle being on my feet for prolonged periods hence the decrease in overall activity.

Well, you may not have hit your calorie level, but you still ended with a decent deficit. That's not such a bad thing.

Sorry to hear that you fight ankle problems, that really slows down everything. NOT sorry the flood was less than you expected! Your link to log does not work - neither does mine. If you figure out how to fix your, pass the info on to me.

Thanks Anne, I had already done that once but for some reason link was broken. I just did another copy and paste into sig line and it looks like it works now. What's really weird though is that the second copy and paste appeared to be identical to the broken one.... who knows. Hopefully it'll stay fixed.

Calories: 1630 yes
Macros: Protein 102 g yes
Training: cardio treadmill 35 min, bike 15 steady state
Go Wear Fit burn:2636
Deficit: -1006

Thursday Jan 15, 2009
Calories: No. Crosstrainer said 1804 but not sure I believe it--ended up eating out twice today although dinner was a preplanned family event. I'm estimating closer to 2,000 cals. Treating your daughter to eating out right after a big low blood sugar reaction doesn't make for good choices. Even though it's been corrected with glucose tabs that ravenous feeling can hang on for longer. The low this morning came out of the blue although sitting here looking at yesterday's summary I wonder if the deficit may have contibuted to it. It's awfully delayed though if that's the case. Will have to watch that and see if I tend to tank more often after I've hit a steeper deficit.
Macros: No protein 79 g, heavy on both carbs and fats
Training: I'm going to say yes. I didn't do my planned workout but general activity was high today. For my goals just walking around more will accomplish the same thing I'm looking to do with cardio/weights.
Go Wear Fit burn: was already 2350 or so by 8 pm today. I haven't had it long enough to estimate the burn for the rest of today.
Deficit: currently -350 (using 2,000 cal estimate today)

Not sure what tomorrow will bring. 4 of us from endo's office are going to "Endocrine Days" a conference in Seattle tomorrow. So tomorrow will be a long day. May not post again until the weekend.

Calories: 1739 Yes
Macros: No, too little protein, increased fat
Training: Yes, just walking when able at conference actually probably burned more calories doing this than with exercise.
Go Wear fit burn: 2600
Deficit: -861

Saturday Jan 17, 2008
Calories: 1305, no too low?
Macros: no, too little protein
Training:
Yes, weights
Go Wear fit burn:
2598
Deficit: -1293

Sunday Jan 18, 2008
Calories: 1281, no too low??
Macros:
no, too much fat, too little protein
Training:
Yes, 45 minutes steady state cardio stationary bike
Go Wear fit burn:
2429 at 11:30 pm
Deficit:
-1148

I hate to eat if I'm not hungry and also not experiencing low blood sugars so don't know yet how I feel about coming in lower than planned on calories. This was also not a busy weekend for me in terms of activity outside of exercise. So as this doesn't happen very often I'll just watch it for now.

I personally don't think the odd very low cal day will do you any harm if its infrequent and as you say having no negative blood sugar effects.

Is the Gowearfit estimating what you thought you would burn so far?

For me trying to figure out what I actually burn has been really difficult. I do know it's actually less than what most calculators predict and when I follow a diet carefully I don't lose as much weight as expected so for me that's been a huge part of the problem is trying to figure out what my maintenance is. So far I've found Leigh's activity quiz to be the closest predictor of my burn and the gowearfit matches that almost perfectly.

So far this has been the most accurate way to monitor daily activity and quantitate it compared to just using a heart rate monitor or pedometer. The results are also very consistent with what I remember I did activity wise for the day. So over time I expect it to be very helpful as I now have a number to use for calories burned. I don't get too hung up on numbers ie I understand that affordable technology will get you ballpark figures rather than exact numbers. It's the same way with blood sugar monitors in the long run it doesn't matter if a 100 reading is really 80 or 120 as long as the numbers are consistent with one another. It's the trends that are most important.

So my thoughts are it doesn't matter if it's off as long as it's consistent which so far it is. Over time I should be able to take average calories in, calories out and predict expected weight loss and compare to actual weight changes and then make adjustments from there. I'll have to be patient though as for me I know from past experience that I can literally go for weeks with no weight loss showing on the scale and then I'll suddenly drop 5 lbs. So I don't get gradual changes so I've learned not to give up or make changes too soon.

It's been very helpful in looking at general activity vs formal exercise. What you burn in the gym isn't the biggest calorie burner it's moving a little bit here and there throughtout the day that really adds up. It certainly illustrates why Leigh says sometimes less exercise is more in the long run.

Calories: 1842, no
Macros: Don't have crosstrainer open right now but I think no
Training: no, took an extra rest day
Go Wear Fit burn: 2450
Deficit: -608

Was doing well although coming in under calories again when daughter decided to cook mozzarella sticks which weren't on my plan and I ate too many. Was hungrier than usual and would have been a lot worse if more cheese sticks were available to me. So all in all being 150 over calories is not a bad thing at all just not according to my original plan. But I have a habit of moderating myself right into a standstill so want to track how much of that I'm doing overall and figure out that happy medium that still accomplishes my goals but yet doesn't make me OCD with diet and exercise or unable to roll with life's punches. Also this was definately more along the lines of I just want it rather than being a reasonable accomodation to life's variables.

Tuesday Jan 20th, 2009

Calories: 1608 yes
Macros: Protein over 100 so good there
Training: no, too tired.
Gowearfit burn: 2131 at 9:30 pm
Deficit: Don't know yet but at least -523

Didn't get much sleep last night, one of the dogs kept having to go out to the bathroom. Finally after the third time in an hour I just left her outside. Don't know yet if it's just more neurological stuff or if she's getting a urinary tract infection. She's a little odd--she was very sick when she was a year old with what ended up being a parasitic brain infection that she was probably born with. She's still partially paralyzed, has mild seizures, and lately off and on has had some intermittent weakness in her legs or occasional accidents in the house. So the bug may also be in her spinal cord they don't know for sure. It's one of these parasites that may never totally go away although she's hopefully she's past the worst of it. Or it could be just residual damage from the worst of the infection. So will see how she does tonight but may have to take her to the vet tomorrow.

Interestingly enough Tuesdays are coming in ok for the most part which is good since we almost always have lunch brought in at work on Tuesdays and my hubby cooks and plans the food most Tuesdays or we'll eat out as a family. I think though that because there are more potential pitfalls there I tend to be ultra careful with my choices and portions. So all is good.

Are you aiming at 1600-1700 cals per day? Or are you trying to hit a certain deficit daily. I too cannot for the life of me work out what maintenance is. These past 2 weeks at 1800 I was pretty sure that would be aorund maintenance but with a gain of over 4 pounds I need to go back to the drwaing board Like you I clearly burn much less than any estimates. I am really desperate to find a way to get Gofitwear and am hoping than the poster from Austria in the thread has success as then I can go that route.

I do hope your dog hasn't a urinary tract infection, sounds like sje has already suffered a lot

There's the sweet spot I'm working on myself in regards to eats. Once I accomplish that, I hope there's a similar thing to be found with workouts.

What a long day. Dog, hubby, and dear daughter are all sick with a stomach bug although I'm reasonably sure dog would have a different bug. She doesn't have UTI but they do think she still has neospora (that's the neurological parasite) so after she's over this stomach bug she'll go back on antibiotics for 2 months. Poor thing. She's the sickest of everybody so far. She's stopped drinking now too so she may need IV's tomorrow if she doesn't do better here real soon. She was crying every two hours last night and was so sick I didn't want to leave her outside for long so I was up and down all night with her. And during the day have had to help hubby and daughter also. I'm tired. So far not sick though. (Keeping fingers crossed).
