Thanks guys. I had a good visit with my family over there. Got to spend time with my parents, sis, and nephew. The dog did great except when she decided to run on the road so the last couple days she was pretty much totally leashed.
My dad's surgery went well you can hardly tell he had his lip removed they did such a great job of reconstruction.
He did give me a big scare yesterday though. The two kids, my dad and I went to Crawford State Park which is way up in the north corner of the state. Not much there except for the Gardner Caves.
Wow, what a big scare & your dad refusing to go to the doc is quite typical for men, I suppose?
As long as calories were in check & in your case, blood sugar reasonably stable too, that's the most important thing. You can now go back to the grind again..
Diana,
What's happening with your exercise program from Alan A? Is there more than an exercise program that he's set up for you? It's been almost a coupla weeks?

I have a nutrition and training program from Alan that I'm following. I'm not posting here as it's customized for me and it's also his livelihood. I feel it's kind of like respecting copyrights. Don't want to give away the secretz.
I probably will start posting general results though. For now it's all too new.
In the interests of posting some progress here's my weight chart. The start date is pre Alan but seemed a good place to start plus I think it included my stat's that he used to set up my program.
Weight has been bouncing around a bit. Not too surprising given the week at my folks. It's been nice to drop down below 235 even if it is temporary. I was around 260lbs a year ago so even if things have gone slowly I'm down a total of 25 lbs. That's good.
It is a good trend. Back when I was weighing daily I found it interesting to look at the highs and the lows. If both were going down (no matter where I was) that was a good thing.
Oh, and I was thinking about you today. I found some very cheap boneless skinless chicken breasts, frozen actually. So I bought some today and thawed half a dozen of them (looks like trainees did the boning/skinning), brined them for a couple of hours, and will try smoking them in the morning. I'll let you know how it goes.
Trend definitely looks good, especially the waist measurements.
(keep forgetting to take mine)
I've always periodically done measurements for sewing but never daily. I'm surprised at how much that fluctuates on a daily basis.
Of course that could just be variances in where the tape measure is.
For me also I think there's a difference in that the new scale measures in 1/10th pound increments. It's also very consistent no matter where I put it on our bathroom floor or how many times I get off and on. The one I was using before measured to the nearest 0.5 lb increments and had a lot of variation. You could move the scale and weight would change by 2 lbs or just do a couple of weights and each would be different. The only problem now is if I don't write it down right away it's easy to forget what it was. The numbers blend in your mind.
But I think the trend looks promising although it's still a little too early to tell. Now with my tendency to whoosh some of that will be my efforts in early August. It'll all even out in the end.
I think for me having some external control is helpful in terms of compliance though.
Boys are like that though, they are sooooo stubborn about going to the doctor or getting medical help for anything.
My ex boyfriend used to have migraines so bad that he would bleed from his nose and ears and STILL wouldn't go to the doctor. I would pray for him to get better, all the while feeling like killing him myself.
Good trend you have going with the program . . congrats!

Diana.. thought to PM you but since I'm so excited about the Aha Erlebnis/discovery I made.. thought to ask you here.
Isn't blurry eye sight a sign of very high blood sugar level in diabetes?
For the longest time I'd get blurry eye vision when doing interval sessions on the treadmill when I was restricting carbs/calories very much . Same for when I was driving my car in very stressful (heavy traffic) conditions.
At the time I was thinking that since eyes can't do ketone bodies & require glucose, it was low blood sugar.. Lo & behold : every time I ate a piece of candy, the blurry vision would go away.
Now all of a sudden I'm reminded that the stress hormone cortisol wrecks havoc on blood sugar level & drives it UP & UP & UP!
See... when I was measuring blood sugar for quite a while (bought the monitor & expensive strips) it was always in the 'iffy' range when fasting. That's 6-7 mmol/L (x18 for mg/dl = 108-126) : too high to be feeling good about it, not high enough to be worried. Especially not since when I went to the doctor's office the walk (or bike ride) alone made bs drop back to the healthy range (below 6/108). Soooo , imagine how stunned I was when I once measured AFTER breakfast!
Crazy... it was quite a bit lower than at the fasted range.. seems like that eating breakfast brings blood sugar down.
It drove me nuts for years to not understand what exactly happened.. people at the BR forum (monkey island) poked fun of me & said I was crazy for thinking this since the eyes are so tiny.. but things seem to fall into place all of a sudden..
Are you going along with my reasoning and say it was the cortisol /high blood sugar that made my eyes go all blurry?

Your reasoning is logical but it's not something typically seen.
Usually I don't see patients report blurred vision unless blood sugars have been very high for a long time--like 300 to 600 for several months. It's one of the later symptoms of high sugars.
I personally don't notice any vision changes even if my blood sugar is over 500 and I'm sick.
That being said some people are sensitive to sugar swings and notice high sugars a lot earlier.
The only way to know for sure would be to check at that time. (I'd suggest pulling off the road though first)
I'm not sure why your vision is blurry when driving. It may be that you're not used to focusing your eyes at that distance and also it sounds like driving over there is a totally different proposition. I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't cortisol/adrenalin but not necessarily it's impact on blood sugars.
Dang, I'd thought to have found the definite answer to the problem..
Then it may have to do with either blood pressure? Or the fact I have astigmatism & squint (1 lazy eye while the other one is working).
OTOH, I didn't always get it when driving but also got it on the treadmill doing intensive intervals.. so the riddle remains.
However, it may be time to go back to the eye specialist anyway, since I'm at this age where you start needing 2 different strengths.
Just catching up after a ridiculous month for me. And I see you have joined "team Aragon" Nice choice! Tom and I are both in there with you. I have been very happy in my 11 or so month with Alan but I HATE the daily reporting thing. THAT part of it gets really, really old. Every time I chance to talk to Alan I try to negotiate out of that requirement. Never works....
I can't wait to see your progress going forward!

The BIGGER I get the smaller you look
Coming back to the blurry vision.. when it's not blood sugar being too high nor too low it may just be a matter of the eyes getting too dry from not blinking enough when driving or doing intervals & being überfocused. Sounds like a way better & less alarming explanation.
Or maybe it could be too high blood pressure in the eyes? I've read about a woman whose eye pressure was too high & know even another woman who dabbled in powerlifting but gave up on it as her eye specialist told her to quit due to decreasing eye sight due to high eye pressure when lifting harrrd.
I thought I would post a general progress note. My weight today is 233 which is 4.8 lbs down from Aug 15th. My start date with Alan was officially I believe Aug 18th. I think my compliance has been high and it sounds like Alan has been happy with what I've been doing.
I really have to give him kudos for setting up an excellent plan. He did an awesome job of taking the information and making an assessment and came up with something that suits me and my personality and my likes and dislikes. That's not always easy when talking with someone in person let alone being able to do it long range and through email communication. I'm finding the daily accountability to be helpful also. A little external control is great since I tend to be so moderate.
Also today's weight means I am down approximately 15 lbs since January 2009 and have lost a total of about 27 lbs from last August. So the whole year has brought about a very slow but steady progress.
The weight loss seems slow to me as supposedly at my weight it should be "easy" to lose 2 lbs a week. Yeah right. Bodies don't always follow convention.
On another note food is rather interesting right now. My daughter got her first migraine almost 2 years ago and from the onset has been pretty much continuous. The severity has subsided a lot but still has been pretty disabling overall and a lot for a kid to contend with. She also has autonomic neuropathy and they never did find out exactly what's causing all this. Anyway that's been pretty stable and her headaches this year were more low grade. And she did really well in Japan but had a pretty major relapse upon return to the states. So now her headache specialist has us looking closer at environmental and food triggers. Which is tricky in that her headaches are so chronic.
Basically to make a long story short it's affecting our eating habits somewhat. Right now she's on an elimination diet although not a super strict one. The dietician is having her eliminate dairy, all foods with preservatives and additives, artificial sweeteners, and to limit caffeine. A lot of what I cook is real food so doesn't have preservatives and additives but still I've had to go through a lot of stuff to replace or substitute. Some of the things that have preservatives have kind of surprised me like pickles. When I make pickles they just have salt and vinegar. It's amazing how much crap is in our foods when you start looking. Of course her lunch foods etc are the biggie she's a teenager and would be quite happy living on pizza and Easy Mac and TV dinners. But she's been a trooper about it all so far.
Fortunately I don't mind cooking and baking. And she's been trying new foods like almond milk and rice milk and baking her own goodies like chocolate muffins. (Chocolate is being allowed in moderation.) Maybe we can get her to actually eat some more fruits and vegetables too while doing this. That's always good.
Sorry that your daughter is having such trouble with the migraines ... and isn't it amazing what is in food when you start to look!? I always buy Smucker's Peanut Butter. Just peanuts and salt. But hubby doesn't like it, so he brought home Skippy Reduced Fat ... and I think he was even a little shocked when he looked at the ingredient list!!

Yeah, I'm not sure that I buy into it much. Cutting 1000 calories out of your daily requirement is tough, regardless of your weight. Sure, at a higher weight it's maybe not as big a deficit, but you're still cutting 1000 calories out of your diet. I sometimes think that's part of what discourages people with a lot to lose. ie. if they don't lose a lot fast then they're not doing it right. Consider any continued downward trend a good thing. Congrats!
Just a brief summary. Yesterday completes one month of following Alan's plan or at least trying to. I was on vacation for one of the weeks and I've been sick this past week with a nasty cold. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the flu temp wasn't high enough but boy I tell you it sure whooped me. I seem to be on the mend now. I think I'm still going to skip working out today--just running errands today wore me out and I was sweating like I was doing cardio!!!! Ridiculous.
It sounds like he's been pleased with my compliance overall. It hasn't been perfect by any means though. I think my highest calorie day was 1694 (My plan is 1511) and had only 3 days over 1600. Many days I'm coming in with fewer calories also and while I don't pay too much attention to averages my low days more than compensated for the higher ones. Overall my protein intake has been much better too. I've been gravitating back to more carbs less protein so need to reign that in but when I'm feeling better.
My weight has bounced around a lot from day to day but the overall trend is downward. Right now I'm holding at 234/235. My highest weight during the past month was 238.9 shortly after vacation and my lowest weight was 233.
Training: I have been doing an upper/lower body split. I've missed some sessions especially this week while sick. Even though I went to work I pretty much came home and went to bed. I plan to resume the exercise tomorrow.
It looks like you're making good progress. Although I'm sorry that you're not feeling well at the moment. You know what you need to do - rest and recover. Then when you're feeling better you can give 100%. Take care of yourself.
