Cool Playing Around (and Conversational)

Was in the middle of putting a reply in my NROL4W log and decided on the spot to start my next one.

This is going to be my current spot for logging some activity and chatting.

Will be back to put something in this when I finish replying to Anne.

Just to get this thing started. I'm picking up from where I left off.

Basically, two-weeks ago, I went to a Nia intensive and became a White Belt instructor. I could be let loose on the world, however, I have some studying to do. I intend for this to be my new profession. I've never done that much intense movement in a 1-week period. I went back over the schedule and found that I logged approximately 800 min during that time.

If you don't know this about me, I'm a fitness test-driver. I firmly believe that I must have a purpose for any type of movement I am doing, with the ultimate goal that it give my body pleasure. Pleasure comes in many forms -- relaxation, strength, flexibility, agility, adaptation, imbalance rehab. Pleasure must feed mind-body-spirit. Therefore, when I test-drive something that has caught my interest, if I cannot fit it into having a pleasurable purpose, I either adapt it for myself or I DROP IT.

So since I've been back, of course, I've logged everything (just not on-line). I am not following a prescribed program, so it's been a smorgasbord of "What do I feel like doing today."

Sunday, August 10: Back from intensive, had a party at home, did Nia Global Unity DVD with my sisters-in-law. Cardio/Stretch: 1 hr.

Wednesday, August 13: Full-Body Stretch I made up done with Husband.

Thursday, August 14:
  1. Shoulder Pre-hab: Internal & External Rotation + YTI on Swiss Ball
  2. Strength Workout: I created a routine to do at home & in backyard
    1. BB Split Squat
    2. Spiderman Push-ups (saw this as a mobility ex and liked it so used it as a push-up variation)
    3. Russian Twist on Swiss Ball
    4. Reverse Hyper Extension on Swiss Ball
    5. BB Bent-Over Row
  3. Full-Body Stretch: Husband liked the one I created so much the day before, he asked for another one.
Saturday, August 16:
  1. Zen Sculpt with Ellen Barret (54 min). All Star Workout from FitTv. Used 5-lb dumbbells. This is a functional cardio/endurance type workout with abs. AND she was not playing. I kept this one on the DVR and will be doing it on a regular basis until I want to keep the 5-lb DBs for the whole workout.
  2. 45-min walk around neighborhood.
Monday, August 18: Strength workout (my choice). In backyard & house:
  1. BB Front Squats
  2. BB Bench Press
  3. Parallel Grip 1-Try up Chin-up (didn't happen) then 1 Negative Chin-up
  4. Reverse Hyper Extension on Swiss Ball
  5. Lying Single Leg Curl on Swiss Ball
Tuesday, August 19: Gaiim A.M. Stretch DVD Full-Body Stretch (30 min)

Wednesday, August 20: Full-Body Massage. Focus: Back, Glutes, and Hamstrings.

Sign me up!
I look forward to checking out all of your creative workouts.

I took your advice yesterday evening and did a long *warm up* followed by lots of stretching. Then dinner at my new favorite restaurant, a French spot in downtown Seattle.

Glad to see you all found me -- and Tom you beat me back.

Kate, I'm glad you took a rest evening. What was on the b'day menu?

Jane, thanks for popping in. Have a question for you. Saw the Coach Dos book was from Men's Health, so I went over to that site and found a "Power Training" section. Is this the same as the book (just with less detail)?

Default 08/21/08: Cardio (1 hr)

Hey ya'll,
Just a short post because I need to get in the tub. Just got back from this:

Workout:
Duration: 54 min
HR Avg: 162
HR Max: 193
Cal: 520
In Zone (115-151): 14 min
Beginning Hip Hop at Entice Fitness. Just opened today. Place is warm & welcoming. Was a formal (not cardio) dance class, but I didn't know that before I got there. Loved, loved, loved it!!! Quickly remembered how much I LOVE TO DANCE.

Had no mishap with the HR monitor. And now that I've wrapped the strap (where it adjusts), I'm quite happy with it (no scratchiness).

And I can still do the splits (with a nicely pointed toe).

And, before class started, I was taught how to do a handstand on a stripper pole!

Leaving @ 3 this morning to go see my baby girl. Was going to do a weight workout this morning, however, thought I might not want to get on the road with any DOMS.

New Topic:
Did you all look at the video Leigh posted? I looked at it earlier. Except that she is long-winded (but I think her accent is cute), doesn't mention Bod Pod and because of her preference for calipers, I wish she had discussed more about when they are not accurate, I thought it was good. It was funny to me that I had more of an issue with determining the male body fat, but not the women (maybe because of the ones I know from here -- including myself -- gave me a more accurate eye).

Hi there. Glad you have the HR strap all settled in.

Yes, I did notice that and not sure how I feel about it. I guess I am just going to go with what I have seen when looking at the different methods of testing. I think (no guru, just opinion) if you do it and do it as instructed, it should be pretty darn accurate, from what I have read.

Why I thought it was good is because I've never given body fat % a lot of consideration until I started on the testing kick. So the most interesting item in the presentation was looking at the muscular system and applying body fat to it. That was an interesting concept to me.

I've been having a hilarious time with my child. One thing she mentioned to me that had me rolling was that she was having a talk with one of her white female co-workers about black women and their hair. She told the co-worker that a lot of black women have angst about hair like white women have about weight. Instead of the co-worker being offended, she said "Ooooh -- I get it."

Have also been to an LL Cool J concert and Gladys Knight's and Ron Winan's Chicken and Waffles. With the music & good food, if I lived here I could easily become a hedonist.

For those of you who are reading my log and are "aghast" that I mentioned something racially different, my log is probably not the place you'd want to hang out. While I don't make non-PC things a rolling theme in my posts, I don't censor my log comments based on a PC filter (since this log is new, I thought I'd put some viewer discretionary commentary. Further comments will not elicit such disclaimers).

Girl,
I'm about to die. I had a chance to go back stage, HOWEVER, my sweet baby was tired from being at work all day, so we went home.

I promise I got a workout -- was on my feet dancing the whole concert. Man is GORGEOUS!

I would agree. I was trying to open the door for someone who might not know why I would think this conversation between those two young'uns was funny to be okay with asking me about it Then the other side of me said okay can't be doing that all the time

I was reminded of your hair observation tonight. After Michelle Obama's speech I turned to TVOne to listen to their response. I enjoy listening to Michael Eric Dyson and he and his wife were on the show. Anyway, the first thing one of the women on the panel said was Michelle Obama's hair was perfect. I had an ahha moment!

Too funny (and doesn't surprise me in the least). I wish I had seen it, I love to hear Michael. When he goes into his articulations, makes me think he is singing/rapping.

OMG! I wanted to ask you if he looks as good in person, as he does in pictures and videos. Wow, just wow. I can only imagine the workout you got in during the show.

Default Workout: Strength. Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Okay. This is supposed to have some work in here. So, we have a workout.

Have a plan for the next 5 weeks or so and two alternating workouts. This is the first one. Planned it out after looking over my past two month's of activity. Have averaged 1 strength workout/week since moving. Decided to ease back into it with these workouts.

Am finding that I really do not want to go to the gym. Don't want to get ready. Don't want to drive across town. Don't want to see MFs posturing in the gym. Gym has 1 squat rack and what do I see when leaving -- MF curling in the squat rack (I just had to ).

Went to gym at 11 a.m. after going for car service. Was a good time to go. Ate a breakfast bar & banana in dealership then found needed some extra before hitting gym. Got a McDonald's cheeseburger.

STATS:
  • WO Length: 62 min (includes warm-up but not cool down)
  • HR: AVG: 166. MAX: 196
  • Rest Periods: 3 minutes squats. 1-minute others. After squats rested until HR came down to 160s
  • Cals: 611
WARM-UP:
  1. General: 2-lap jog around indoor track
  2. Glute activation (10 reps e): x-band walks, prone glute activation, kneeling straight leg raises
  3. Bar Exercises (5 reps e): sumo squat, RDL, push press, good morning, shrug, bent-over row
  4. Misc (5 reps e): scap pulls (15-lb DBs), 30° push-ups, side lunges
WORKOUT:
A: BB Squats (3 x 8)
WU: 45 lbs x 8
S1: 65 lbs x 8
S2: 75 lbs x 8
S3: 85 lbs x 4
S4: 95 lbs x 4

Alternating Sets from here

B1: Floor Push-Ups (2 x AMRAP)
S1: BW x 8
S2: BW x 5
Didn't want to push myself and did not. These sets are miserable.

B2: OHG Lat Pulldown just outside shoulder width (2 x 10)
WU: 60 lbs x 10
S1: 75 lbs x 10
S2: 75 lbs x 10
Plates are marked with # lbs instead of just #. However jumps from 60 lbs, 75 lbs, 90 lbs, etc.

C1: DB Bent‑Over 2-point Row 90° (2 x 10)
S1: 22.5-lb DB x 10: R first
S2: 25-lb DB x 10: L first
Weight needs to go up

C2: Lying Single Leg Swiss Ball Leg Curl – L then R (2 x 10)
S1: BW x 10
S2: BW x 10
Love this exercise. Need to drive L heel harder

Afters: Stretched hams, lats, & shoulders. @ home: stretched calves & quads. Feeling glutes, hams, forearms, little L shoulder & L lat. Surprised not feeling quads. 2 hours later need to eat something.

Cheeseburger preworkout meal sounds like something I would do. It obviously looks better on you!

Are you going to do strength workouts twice a week or stay with one and regular dancing and yoga?

I'm going to try for 2x a week and full-body stretch once a week. No other activity is formalized. I've found that my arms, legs, and back are doing the spidey tingle whether I strength train or not. This indicates to me that they have gotten to the point where they expect movement.

I need to start on my Nia instructor preparation (which includes freedance, learning a routine, studying the music, and applying the Nia principles) and then putting myself out into the world.

I missed the big show. I went to bed at 10 (and now up since 3). Went to find picture. Hillary has really upped her fashion game, and her hair does look good.

I see you pulled out one of the big guns for your next beauty lesson.

I like the classics. My first car was a 1957 Chevy Belair when I was 15 years old.

I am 52.

I bought the Chevy in 1971 for $375.00 and it was white over blue and had white tuck and roll upholstry. The body and interiour were cherry but I had to take apart the engine because I don't believe the oil had been changed since 1957.

Is that Sophia Loren?

My husband has a 74 Chevy Monte Carlo. Engine is fabulous. Towing it across country & back is not.

My favorite is the 64 mustang.

Yes that is Sophia.

Default Workout: Strength Endurance. Saturday, 08/30/08

STATS:
  • WO Length: 45 min (includes warm-up & cool down)
  • Done at home
  • HR: AVG: 156. MAX: 188
  • Cals: 405
Warm-Up & Workout Song: Oops (Oh My) by Tweet

WARM-UP (15 min):
  • Freedance (songx2)
  • Dancer’s Warm-up (songx2)
WORKOUT: Circuit (x2) – Two-minute rest after 1st circuit
Circuit 1:
BB Deadlift
60 lbs x 5 reps
Turkish Get-up 15-lb DB x 5 reps all L then all R
YTWL (on Swiss Ball) 5-lb DBs x 5 reps each letter
Incline Bench Press [Arms Alternating] (on Swiss Ball) 15-lb DBs x 10 reps each arm
Single Leg Romanian Deadlift [Alternating Hand outside foot] 5-lb DB x 10 reps all L leg then R leg
Russian Twist (on Swiss Ball) 15-lb DB x 5 reps alternating sides

Circuit 2:
BB Deadlift
60 lbs x 5 reps
Turkish Get-up 8-lb DB x 5 reps all R then all L
YTWL (on Swiss Ball) 5-lb DBs x 5 reps each letter
Incline Bench Press [Arms Alternating] (on Swiss Ball) 15-lb DBs x 10 reps each arm
Single Leg Romanian Deadlift [Alternating Hand outside foot] 5-lb DB x 10 reps all L leg then R leg
Russian Twist (on Swiss Ball) 15-lb DB x 5 reps alternating sides

NOTES:
  1. Workout time 20 minutes.
  2. Circuit 1 TGU done with good form all reps but after this set, thought only wanted to do 1 circuit. Dropped weight for 2nd circuit. All reps done with good form and much faster. Need a 10 & 12-lb DB to want to work up to 15-lb DB for both circuits. Note that TGU HR during 2nd circuit was almost the same as first circuit (in 180s)
  3. Originally set-up to have YTWL follow Deadlift but went to TGU afterwards because didn’t look at list. Will keep this way for subsequent workouts.
  4. Enjoyed this circuit and music selected
COOL DOWN: Song: Why Should I Be Sad by Britney Spears
Song tempo slower than one selected for warm-up/workout. Danced through song with slow lengthening movements.
