You're so sweet to say that, even though the past week or so has been some of the drabbest, most boring logging I've ever done There just haven't been any stories since I changed up the training. I guess it's because I'm spening 25-50% less time in the gym, and when I am in there, I'm swinging and throwing stuff. Hmmm...

I posted this elsewhere, but it deserves a second one. I just finished making up my first batch of homemade beef jerky in a LONG time. I'd forgotten how good this stuff is.

Notes:
--Uncle Pukey almost paid a visit today. Now, in no way did I plow straight through this thing, but I just wanted to get all the reps in. I'm guessing it took me around 45 minutes to do this (I was at 22-something halfway through). I did have take a couple minutes' break to deal with dogs running around in the yard, but otherwise, for the most part, I couldn't've asked for a better day outside: partly cloudy, 85ish, light breeze, low humidity.
--For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why the pipe was so damned unstable, more so than usual, until I really focused on core contraction (read about it extensively in Balance but never put it into practice). That was a nice change, and I could've kept going on the carries except that my shoulders were on fire. Good to know for next time.
--I think I'm going to go pass out now kthxbye.

Nice job on the circuit! I don't know what a slosh pipe is but from your descriptions it sounds like a fun time. And man that homemade beef jerky sounds good.
Slosh pipe instructions. Mine weight 35-40lbs, I'm guessing. Total beeotch.
Yeah, the jerky is really easy. I get a fairly cheap bulk cut of beef (top round, etc), cut it as thinly as possible with a larger butcher knife, and marinade it for 24 hours in the fridge in a one-part teriyaki sauce, one-part light beer (Bud Light usually) mixture. When time is up, put the strips in a kitchen dehumidifier, and depending on how thick the cuts were, it can take 18-36 hours to dry out (also depending on how dry/chewy you like it). I now have munchie snacks for a week.

I also found out that a fitness equipment company that Danny linked in another thread ships from Fort Mill, SC (just down the road), so I emailed them asking if they allow for local pick-up. If so, I'll be able to get KBs for under $2/lb. If not, oh well, no-go for now.

If that works for you post about it... they're probably a tank of gas away from me, so likely not worth it, but if we're going to Charlotte anyway, then it might be.
Sure thing. I haven't gotten an e-mail reply yet, but I know where their warehouse is, so I'll likely just drop by tomorrow at some point and see if I can buy out of their front office there.

Intervals
--6 x 400m, 90RI (active)
90RI
--5 x 50yd, 0RI
Time - 24:57
Core/Finisher
--slosh pipe carry across shoulders, 4 x 100yds, 60RI
Notes:
--6 x 400m sure seemed a helluva lot easier than 4 x 800m
--The sprints were... well... ugly, to say the least, but I got them done.
--I'm beginning to think that there's no point in doing other core work in this entire program if I just start carrying that damned pipe for time/distance.
--My right calf was hammered early in yet another track session, but I'm still chalking it up to a modified motor recruitment pattern (similar to the reason for the relatively limited right hip mobility) compensating for the hamstring. It's probably going to be a very long-term project to get everything back in balance.
--Otto, your avatar is f*cking awesome.

Woke up to an email this morning, Otto:

Local pickup is no problem. Just call ahead to verify hours of operation and inventory.
BOOYAH!

Sprinting is one of the most demanding things that you can put yourself through and hurts a lot of people. Since you already know that you're fucked up, maybe moving to a different exercise might be better? After all, it's the energy system that's important not the exercise you train it with.

The energy system is the important thing, yes, but I suppose I should've clarified that sprinting doesn't bother anything; it's those laps around the track that bother my calf. I'm not worried yet because it is muscular only, no ligament or cartilage pain, and I've had similar pain before when restarting running. I'll give it a month or two, and if the pain continues to pop up, I'll look into other options. FWIW, some light stretching and then dancing last night seemed to clear everything up as I'm having no issues--well, no physical issues--this morning

Just got back from the store. Walk in, give money, get kettlebells (and just about any other truly practical equipment you could want). If they don't have something, they can order it to the store so you only pay sales tax and no S&H. I rattled off a short wish list when asked what else I might want (weight vest, parachute, sled, truck tire) and got a "yes" to everything but the tire, but the girl at the desk said one of their regular customers--a Strongman competitor--was coming in later, so she'd ask him and give me a call. She then said screw it, I'll just call him now, so I walked out with:
--2 kettlebells (12kg, 18kg, both the smooth black finish)
--a company t-shirt (free with any order)
--the address of a truck tire supplier (apparently they'll load it up and everything so long as you have a vehicle to haul it away)
for $140. Pretty much everything in their online catalog was sitting in the store. The KBs get more expensive per pound as they get smaller, but even so, the 7% South Carolina sales tax plus the cost of gas to get there by far beats paying S&H on the stuff (for me). If anyone wants me to pick up stuff and hold it here to avoid S&H, let me know.

I told to girl to forget all other birthday et al presents. Aside from the summit DVDs, just take me to the store and let me pick out stuff up to a certain budget limit

Circuit x 4, 120RI

--KB hang snatches x 5 per arm @ 18kg
--KB swings x 5 per arm @ 18kg
--one-arm inclined push-ups x 5 per arm @ BW (~45-degree body angle)
--KB hang cleans x 5 per arm @ 18kg
--KB hang snatches x 5 per arm @ 18kg
--KB swings x 5 per arm @ 18kg
--bench jumps x 10 @ ~15-18" height
Finisher
--carrying said 18kg KB back to the truck
Notes:
--As noted earlier today, I picked up my very first kettlebells. They're exactly like the ones we used at JP's for Cotter's demo. I figured I'd generally use the 12kg for finisher work like the 45-rep swings at the end of some workouts, but I took it in just in case I'd overestimated my abilities (didn't use it today).
--I thought it was a fluke that I was a little winded during/after Cotter's demo, maybe because I hadn't trained for a week, but no, KBs kick my ass, period. I don't think DBs would've done the same for me, but I will say that I REALLY like the instant feedback I get (just like with a jump rope) on my form (or lack thereof). Getting pounded on the forearms bones unexpectedly sure makes you clean up your act in a hurry.
--The bench jumps kinda sucked since I couldn't find a higher bench, so I did my best to jump with as little pre-stretch as possible.
--Roland is my daddy on this workout, but I'm looking forward to repeating this one.
--I need a heavier KB for cleans. Snatches and swings are just about right with the 18kg for now.
--By the way, KBs sure are some kinda esoteric curiosity. The looks weren't enough today--I actually had people come try to talk to me about them. One guy was nice enough, just asking what I was training for (nothing, just having fun), how much it weighed (about 40lbs), and what was it for (some passing comment about a moving center-of-mass, grip strength, shoulder stability, etc). Another guy tried to impress me by showing that he knew what a kettlebell was: "How much does that kettlebell weight?" He proceeded to ramble about how new KBs are and that I should look into KB classes and something else that I tuned out. At least Old Man George was happy to see them. Hopefully, I can get some referral credit to the store where I got mine if people actually go buy from there.

Notes:
--A red-letter day, lemme tell ya. It started with (I'm 99% sure) a broken right index finger--yes, to match my broken left index finger--from messing with the dogs this morning (jammed it straight-on into the floor). Lots of ice later, it's still pretty swollen with a very limited ROM. I taped it up to immobilize it as best as I could for the gym.
--The push jerks were a little wobbly on the first set simply because I wasn't familiar with the movement, but after that, no problem.
--Wall squats got 20 seconds more total than last time; squat jumps actually got their entire prescribed reps, even if it wasn't pretty.
--I put "finisher" in quotes because it was supposed to be a one-arm DB swing right after the squat/jump superset. Since I don't take breaks between sets on these, I figured out last time that a 20lb DB is perfect. Well, as soon as I'd started that last superset, I noticed a trio of brotards (one short, one skinny, one not-skinny) standing in the middle of the free-weight area talking. Okay, fine, whatever. I finished up, found some open floor space, and looked around for the 20lb DBs. Sure enough, they're sitting at the feet of the trio. I had a bug of some kind up my ass today because I walked over to the group, stopped them in mid-sentence, pointed down and said, "Y'all gonna use these or are y'all gonna just stand there and talk?" Of course, they all gave a who-the-fuck-does-this-guy-think-he-is chuckle, and the guy "using" them pointed to another upright bench, saying it was open. I said I needed his weights when he was done because they're the only set in the gym, that I didn't care if he was using them, but if he was just going to keep others from using them, there was a problem. They broke it up and moved on to doing some "work." I put "work" in quotes because the dumbfuck using the 20s started doing something like six sets of lateral raises (with the deep knee bend, of course). I was standing about ten feet behind him, hands on hips, staring at him in the mirror while he never puts them down while talking to other people between sets. He finally decides he's done, turns to his buddy seated beside him, and directly hands him the 20s while looking at me. So, he smiles at me, I say (a little too loudly), "Fuck you, asshole" with an obligatory middle finger, and leave. When I got home, I grabbed the 12kg KB, went out to the deck, and did the finisher, so it depends on how you count a 10-15 minute rest interval. I need a beer.
