So, while my actual training is woefully underactive at this point, my business stuff is ramping up. It's all the "getting ready to get ready" stuff at this point, but I'll probably end up cross-posting a lot between here and the business subforum because I have, ya know, zero experience setting up a business, let alone running it. However, here's my plan to make a plan:

1a. Continue with the certification work (have YFS1, will start working on YFS2 as soon as the materials arrive next week).

1b. Script three months' worth of training sessions per age group (four separate targeted groups plus an all-ages group) to the point where someone off the street could hack through running a group (not that I plan to have a sub that's not also a YFS).

1c. Determine, in theory, what roles would ideally be fulfilled by different people rather than just me, even though it's going to be just me for the foreseeable future, and set up the division of labor and SOPs for each position.

1d. Develop a questionaire (web-based) for current and prospective parents that asks practically everything, from costs, days, times, and venues to preferred shapes, colors, dress (mine, not theirs), and so on (I'm going to need some help here). Completing the questionaire produces a voucher for one free, sample training session.

2a. Develop a logo, color, and font scheme for any marketing materials.

2b. Design and launch website. Visuals will incorporate 2a. Content will focus on general information as well as addressing data from questionaires.

3. Start some free, low-level advertising (Facebook, Craig's List, blog, message boards, etc) for those sample sessions that will double as information sessions. I can more than likely also get some air time on my station's weekend morning news program (again, free to me).

I have a LOT more to do, but that will probably take me through the summer. Comments? Suggestions? Snide remarks? This is going to start looking like RL's log

With the IYCA thing, you'll have regular writings on fitness, kids and business. So it's beginning to sound like my log, yes. All you lack now is sex posts.

Look on the web to see if there is a step-by-step template for writing a business plan and check against it for what is missing. Find a bookkeeper and/or accountant to get some accounting and tax advice for your setup and to help determine what kind of record keeping, financial separation and so forth that you will need. Decide if you will incorporate or start an LLC or whatever for liability reasons. Determine if you will need insurance and if so how to get it.

Don't go half-assed on the financials and record keeping because Uncle Sam and his IRS folks will get you. Start right from the beginning - don't just buy Quickbooks and figure you can wing it. Once you know what you are doing, you can determine if you will do most of it yourself with a software product or hire a professional.

eta: the SBA seems to have some checklists and links here

shoulder PNF x 5/side
hip PNF x 5/side

120RI btwn "sets"
--rope climb x 5 pulls
--rope climb x 5 pulls
--tire flip x 5
--tire flip x 5
--rope climb x 5 pulls
--tire flip x 5
--tire flip x 5

Notes:
--Another quickie. I'm just trying to get SOMEthing in every day, even if it's just SMR or prehab work, but while it's semi-dry outside, I'm going to do as much outside-only stuff as possible.
--I've been searching all over the Interwebz in vain for exactly how much this tire potentially weighs (minus a decent chunk due to tread wear), but it seems it's so outdated that Firestone doesn't have this particular model on its website. Based on some best guesses from current models and from my own known squat/dead numbers, I'm going to peg this thing at 225-250 pounds, which means nothing because it's cake on a slight decline and more like fruitcake on a slight incline. It's still a good challenge, and I'm just going to try to increase my workload as much as I can (five good consecutive flips in a mix of grass and mud is about all I can do right now--can't wait to put it on concrete).
--I've decided for various reasons to hold off on any impending dietary changes simply because I have to get my activity frequency and intensity way up, so I don't want to run out of steam while doing that.

Can't I just have them sign a contract that says if they get hurt, dems da berries?

Celeste, that'll do nicely. I remember there being one in Cressey Performance that I really liked (only saw a picture of the sign). I need to dig that up.

Aoife, I don't know yet. It'll depend entirely on the surveys I get back, and yes, I know you do designs, and yes, I was going to hit you up for it if I can't design something myself

EDIT: Found it:

Sadly, it'll be somewhat appropriate for the kids and definitely appropriate for the adults.

RedLefty warm-up ('nuf said)

circuit x 5, 60RI
--2-hand KB swing @ 18kg x 10
--burpees* x 10

* denotes first set included "box" jump onto tire

Notes:
--For now, just to get things somewhat regimented, I'm going back to Enamait's Infinite Intensity template. I don't know how closely it'll be followed, but considering that most of the workout options are under a half-hour and that my first goal right now is to do SOMEthing every day, it makes sense. It'll be modified to minimize any pressing movements between horizontal and overhead (the KB handle push-ups the other day were below horizontal)--introducing the tire flips has already caused some twinges in the left shoulder (just need to clean up my form at the transition point, which wouldn't be an issue if I actually did this on my driveway instead of in the back yard). Of course, there will also be modifications for training at home and for inclement weather.
--I'm not logging any flexibility work since it's not happening as part of the workout, but I'll get it in at work tonight after things calm down.
--This was my first workout using a GymBoss. I love/hate it.

Further, a lot of this will depend on where I base my operations. If I remain based in my hometown (where the IRS thinks I live), any income needing to be reported would just go under my actual name since I already have an EIN as an independent contractor, and I already have a business license to work in the city where I actually live as well as work, so that'd be a wash. The problems arise if (a) I decide to base myself in my actual physical city or (b) I start asking for payments in the name of the business. I'll obviously string out the hometown option as long as possible.

That's an awesome sign. We used to have a contract at the ski area regarding kids wearing helmets. It was something along the lines of, "parents, sign here to give your child permission to not wear a helmet, if you don't care about the possibility of their brains leaving the protective shell we call a skull." Plus something about college, their future, etc. Um that was my dad's idea.

Soooo, which would you recommend more? Infinite Intensity or Never Gymless? I'm getting really jealous of your backyard setup, ahem, I mean inspired. Anyway, looking for a plan to kind of tie everything together, and make up some fun workouts. Besides, Shawn wants me to put something together that he can do at home, and I want to make it fun.

For no major reason, I like Infinite Intensity better. IMO, it has a better variety of movement and workout suggestions, and I just like its macrocycle setup better, but Never Gymless is no slouch. Both are good at-home options (II's gym-based stuff can easily be swapped out), and II seems to lean toward combative fitness while NG is more generalized. You can't go wrong with either one.

By the way, you're more than welcome to come visit and play, but admission is one York Barbell t-shirt

30-45 minutes woodchopping
Full-body push finisher

Notes:
--I woke up a couple hours early to get in an interval workout of rope skipping followed by a core circuit. I walked outside with the dogs to find a bunch of branches had fallen on and around the storage shed. No big deal, but I wanted to clear them off before the rain came back. As I rounded the back of the shed, images of a small iceberg hit: the branches were actually the top of a six-inch diameter tree that had fallen through the only possible clearing in the tree line, across the fence, to rest on the shed. Most of the tree was still on county property, but it'd be days before anyone would be out to clear it, so I put on full-cover clothes (lots of vines and undergrowth), grabbed the only lumberjacking tool I own (a small sport hatchet), and went to town. Three-quarters through the main trunk (about four inches in diameter where I chose to cut it so as not to damage the fence), I realized that it wasn't giving at all--there was a three-inch branch supporting the whole thing on the ground just below my cut point (damned thing even had a natural crook in it so that it looked like it was reclining on an elbow, the bastard). The pressure of the tree's weight made the branch harder to cut than the trunk, but it finally split along its length and gave out. The trunk still wouldn't fold, but it would twist (this was some fresh, green wood--why it fell, I don't know), so after all the cutting, I finished with several big pushes to swing it off the shed and back to the ground behind the fence. Nature being what it is, and considering I had to be at work earlier than usual today, I couldn't get in a balanced workload, so my uncoordinated left shoulder and rotation went less-used, but I really don't care.
--I wrote this on my BlackBerry, so I'm sure their are some spelling issues, plus my right thumb isn't working quite right.

Actually, it was prolly just trying to be considerate of its fellow trees… you know, didn't want to burden them with the crushing weight of it's suicide. Gotta love a considerate tree. Plus, we all know how you hate the planet and whatnot, so I'm sure you deserved it. I mean, at least I'm sure it didn't feel like it would matter if it landed on you.

So how would you explain how other trees's crowns were damaged by the entanglement of branches and vines that came down with it? I sure didn't tell the vines to make all the trees' structural intergrities interdependent.

I'll be sure to get that chainsaw really soon, and even if I don't have anything to cut, I'll still run it just because it's manly, right next to the idling lawn mower and trimmer. I'll also eat a can of chili beans and drink a pot of coffee beforehand while revving my Harley. I'll send you the video.

Balls currently in the air:
--IYCA cert
--business setup
--real estate (didn't think I'd forgotten that one, did you?)
--cookout this weekend
--following up with ticket buyers on a couple social outings (Phantom - June 30, Avett Bros - Aug 8)

Yeah, pretty mundane compared to other people. However, as I noted in another thread, my landlord is apparently--and suddenly--desperate to dump the house I'm in. To me. We talked for five or ten minutes this morning, and he must've told me to make him an offer a dozen times. From that other thread:

Quote:
I know what he wants for it, but there's no way in hell I'm paying it, not when the next five years will likely/definitely need: new siding, doors, windows, and two AC units (one for each floor). A new roof will need to go on within the next ten years. Then there's the remodeling work: kitchen layout and cabinets, bathroom cabinets, re-arrange master bed/bath walls, and figure out what to do with a random nook at the back of the living room. Oh yeah, this place won't pass inspection without a full electrical overhaul, too, after which I can safely get the hot tub heater fixed.

Last appraisal was in the mid-$160s who knows how long ago. I might--MIGHT--start offers at $125k and see just how desperate he is.

dayum.
I'm not sure you can buy an outhouse on someone else's property for 125K out here.
Almost makes it seem worth it to move to ... well, no it doesn't really.

Almost makes it seem worth it to move to ... well, no it doesn't really.
Yeah, I can't imagine living out there. Hell, trying to live near NYC was a wake-up call. No matter the economy right now, Charlotte is prime for buying a house (costs plus area amenities).

Not officially, but it'll likely be Soundsmith Fitness since I already (unofficially) use Soundsmith Productions for my on-air and audio work. I don't think "No BS" (my initials) would sit too well with the parentals. However, I'll try to keep from adopting an actual business name for as long as possible to keep the IRS wheels greased.
