I have The Book of the 5 Rings. Only read a chapter of it but it's pretty interesting. For what ever reason, I'm reading these at the same time: Chosen Soldier\5rings\When winning cost too much\nonsurgical sports medicine\some fiction book that I don't remember the name of.

It ends up with a green beret being issued swords and getting roided up and he twists his ankle while fighting elves. Bizzare.

I was planning on doing sprint intervals today since it was 75F and drizzly, but the thought of slippery track and field brought up some bad flashbacks to the hamstring deal, so I'll do them tomorrow after work when everything's dried out. Instead, I ate a whole large, thin-crust, supreme pizza from Domino's.

After conversations with Lisa and Julie, I have a stretching regimen to do over the next couple weeks. I only did one round today. Ouch.

The second tunaloaf had slightly less ketchup and so tasted a tad more tuna-y and a tad less meatloaf-y than the first, but it was still damned good. I'll have to remember that one. Also, like any good meatloaf, this tunaloaf is makes a mean sandwich.

I've decided to go with Omnivore (relevance to recent studies) as my first reading, followed by Zebras (holistic and lifestyle interests--found out a friend of mine is a qigong instructor in Virginia Beach), Ender's (long, complete break from the health/fitness thing), and Five Rings (paged through it, Tao Te Ching, and Art of War, and those will be a whole dedicated phase of study in themselves).

Sprint intervals
--10 x 100yds, 0RI
--5 x 50yds, 0RI

Total time - 7:28

Core "circuit" x 3, 90RI
--Turkish get-up x 3/2/1 each side + 1-arm KB waiters carry x 25yd @ 18kg
--KB twist x 8 per side @ 18kg

Notes:
--Blew my time out of the water from last time; however, the caveat was that I removed the 120RI between distances, resting long enough to just walk a little rather than jog for recovery. I knew I wasn't going to beat my previous time if I took the 120RI, and I didn't have enough of my wits about me to figure out that I could've taken at least a 60RI and still made it, but by that point, I had no idea how my 50yd "sprints" would go, so I just did them as best as I good, which wasn't pretty by any stretch, but they got done. What sucks is that now my time is based on not having a rest interval between the distances. I'm going to hate life next time.
--I'm not sure where the core stuff came from, but it was easier doing it than describing it. Basically, I started with the rising portion of the get-up, walked 25 yards, completed the get-up, switched hands, and did it again, for 3, 2, and 1 reps per superset, respectively. Man, that still doesn't read right, but you get the idea.
--The whole business side of training still has me rather confuzzled, but I'm working on it. I figure the lowest start-up cost would be boot camp-style stuff in local parks. I saw on another thread were JP recommended a starter product by Jim Labadie, which looks good, but it'll have to wait for another paycheck if I go that route. I'm pretty sure I'm not taking the CSCS before the end of the year, if at all. I want to focus on the business, marketing, and logistical side of training for a bit.
--Omnivore's Dilemma starts tonight, so I'm eating all the crap I can before getting sick at the mere thoughts of it.

2-DB split snatch (from sides), 60RI
--3 @ 30s, 3 @ 30s, 3 @ 35s, 3 @ 40s, 3 @ 40s

2-DB push jerk, 60RI
--3 @ 45s, 3 @ 45s, 3 @ 50s, 3 @ 50s, 3 @ 50s

SUPERSET
1-arm inclined push-up (~45 degrees from vertical)), 0RI
--5 @ BW, 5 @ BW, 5 @ BW, 5 @ BW (per arm)
+
medicine ball plyo push-up, 60RI
--8 @ BW, 8 @ BW, 5 @ BW, 5 @ BW

SUPERSET
alternating DB lunges, 0RI
--5 @ 40s, 5 @ 40s, 5 @ 40s, 5 @ 40s (each leg)
+
alternating lunge jumps, 90RI
--5 @ BW, 5 @ BW, 5 @ BW, 5 @ BW (each leg)

2-DB swings, 30RI
--45 @ 15s

Notes:
--Slight increase in loads from last time. I did, however, tweak my lower back during one of the last two sets of split jerks, so ice and heat will be the order of the evening before the Warrior Challenge workout tomorrow (haven't decided what I'll do yet). I take the blame for not concentrating better, but it's difficult when you're battling Coldplay blaring over the speakers (that are now unfortunately "fixed" after a nice, quiet past couple days) and two absolute fucknuts taking a good fifty square feet out of an already too-small free-weight area with a work table setup hammering away at nothing in particular. Seriously, I looked at the whole thing for awhile, and I couldn't tell you what they were doing other than making a loud mess right next to the power rack (which I thankfully didn't need today) in the middle of the day. Of course, this crammed the back-to-school brotards into an even smaller area than usual, and by the end of the two power movements, I told the girl that I REALLY want to go look at my old boxing gym in the next couple days despite the extra $5/month each and fifteen minutes of driving each way. I'm am so over my gym.
--I did manage to concentrate on my breathing during the lower-body superset and felt a lot better about that performance. I also somehow blew out the finisher swings without a break. My buns burned, and sitting was painful for awhile, but in a good way.
--I'm only three chapters into Omnivore, and I can't help but think of how it's a microcosmic version of Ishmael (Daniel Quinn). Ishmael was thought-provoking and enlightening; Omnivore is just pissing me off, but again, in a good way, though after today's general fucktardery (outside the gym as well--as the girl said, apparently she and I were invisible today), maybe I should've started with the Eastern philosophy. Oh well, soon enough.

Circuit x 5, 90RI*
--burpees x 7
--KB snatch x 3 per arm @ 18kg
--burpees x 7
--KB swing x 3 per arm @ 18kg
--burpees x 7
--push-ups x 10

Notes:
--Much better intensity than last time, IIRC. I was already planning on doing an extra circuit going in, but Old Man George stopped me (the third person today) to talk about kettlebells during one of my rest intervals, which turned into a 150RI* after my third circuit, so I blew through those last two.
--I wore my Vibrams today as I've noticed my toes hurt after wearing my wrestling shoes for any jumping movements (too constrictive, like the new undies I'm wearing). My feet were much happier today.
--I've noticed that I'm able to knock out these ten-rep sets of push-ups even during heavy fatigue, yet I can't do more than fifteen straight reps even when fresh. Odd.
--I finished the first section of Dilemma. I knew that most of the stuff discussed there was going on, but I guess it was mostly a cloudy understanding as opposed to the gobbla-esque *WHAM* of the book. More reason than ever to avoid IHOP.

Ben - I'm really impressed. You're definitely improving on everything. Good for you. I'm also glad to see you're working on getting a stretching routine down. I'm feeling 50% better since I started doing stretches 5+ days per week. I've got to attribute some of my strength gains (at a deficit "diet" most days) to having looser and more limber muscles.

Does your ketchup have HFCS in it???

Do your boys hang low, do they wobble to and fro
Can ya tie 'em in a knot, can ya tie 'em in a bow
Can ya throw 'em o'er your shoulder like a Continental soldier
Do your boys hang low?

Thanks, yeah, I've had some dynamic warm-ups and mobility work involved for a year or so now, but stretching is sporadic. It's definitely time to get some individualized work in rather than the blanket cookie-cutter stuff. I'll bet Hartman is taking new clients in Indianapolis

Of course there's HFCS in there I'm halfway through Dilemma, and I've noticed I'm subconsciously keeping a running list of things I already eat or could easily add/change/delete. All I can say is (a) it's about time I bit the bullet and made the investment in a mass purchase of beef from a nearby farm, and (b) I can't wait until I get my own house so I can have a garden (if I don't set one a small one in a kiddie pool on the deck first).

I'll have to dig out Omnivore and take it with me on vacation along with NROL. I began Omnivore and then set it aside in favor of Ender's Game and the Miles saga by Bujold.

Yeah, see, that's why I chose the reading order I did. Unless I get into some Jared Diamond books, Omnivore will be a read unto itself for now. I'm saving the serials and tangential readings for last in this group.

This week is scheduled to be a back-off week, and considering logistics, social plans, and possible weather issues, I've decided to blow off "strength" workouts in favor of extra conditioning routines. While I did recover somewhat from the last back-off week, the bottom line is that my bodyweight is still a significant challenge to my strength, moreso than most of my usual power/strength routines, so I'll just use the bodyweight work in my conditioning routines this time. I'm toying with a *gasp* distance run (just a 5K at most, and possibly in intervals) and/or adding an extra GPP and/or Warrior Challenge and/or interval routine. Hell, I might even test my 1RMs on the three big lifts, but other than that, I'm just going to do some stuff with minimal weights involved (except for WCs and core stuff), get my five days in while still getting soaked at a concert Thursday night, and be ready to hit the weights again next week.

Circuit x 4, 90RI
--burpees x 10
--bear crawl x 30'
--plyo/clap push-ups x 10
--rope skip x 50
--diamond push-ups x 10
--crab walk x 30'
--knee tucks x 10
--backward crab walk x 30'

Notes:
--This was an interesting little train wreck courtesy of Workout of the Week #19-C from RossTraining. Everything was pretty straightforward except the inverse bear crawl, which I can only assume meant doing a bear crawl while bent over backward. I can get into and hold that position, even doing push-ups from there, but there was no walking or crawling or any kind of mobility to be had from there, so I subbed in rope jumping.
--After wallowing on the floor for a bit and doing some Julie-prescribed stretching, I noticed my right arm inflamed (the normal kind) and fatigued far more than my left arm, which I can only really attribute to the diamond push-ups since that was the only movement that really stressed the triceps, and I know I was a little wobbly on them, though I did do them in straight sets while the plyo push-ups came in mini-sets of five (there was a lot of intra-circuit rest going on today).
--I'm looking forward to a posterior-centric conditioning workout of some sort tomorrow, even if that's just my track intervals--my triceps and shoulders are pretty useless right now.
