The whole sleep thing is SO important...people don't realize how important it is. My hubby said he was reading somewhere..(he couldn't remember where) about sleep and how any of the time you get in BEFORE 12:00 at night is more beneficial or important that the time after...I'll bug him to remember where he saw it. But we've been trying to get to sleep earlier. I definitely notice a difference on the day's I've gotten really good sleep! (also on the weight loss front, the more sleep I get, the easier it slides off!!!)
I'd be interested to read about that. My friend who works nights was telling me that someone she works with told her that metabolism slows down when you work nights. I said that I'm not sure that's entirely true, but that I thought I read that WHEN you get your sleep is very important as daytime sleep is not necessarily the same quality sleep that nighttime sleep is.
Hey Celeste. Sleep is really important, as is food. My first thought was anemia too, especially with the lack of protein. I've struggled with anemia all my life, and it can really take a tole on you. I'm glad that you're on top of it and tracking his food for the next few weeks.
Another thing to look at might be mood swings or if he seems to crash through out the day. BFs son eats a lot of carbs, not too much protein and crashes sometimes. In my non-professional opinion, he's having problems maintaining his blood sugar, which can also make you feel exhausted.
Crikey, your log moves quickly! Let's see if I can catch up:
Re. snowshoeing: Yay! I'm SOOO glad you two got out on the hill. It sounds like it was wonderful. Snowshoeing is one of my favorite winter activities--I might like it even more than skiing --and I haven't even been this year! You've inspired me, though. I'm going to plan an outing....
Re. Taylor: We've had this same problem with Robin, who's about the same age. (BTW, I'm in big trouble with him for not calling to wish Taylor a happy b-day yesterday). Robin's got slightly different issues, since he's vegetarian. His tiredness was definitely caused by low iron for a while, but I think it's also because a lot of what he eats (fruits, veggies, breads) doesn't supply him with good long-term energy. We ended up taking him to a nutritionist and taking a hard look at his diet.
It was interesting, because we didn't look at calories at all, but at whether he was getting the RDA of fruits/veggies, carbs, protein, and fat, and whether his carbs were processed or whole-grain choices. We tweaked his diet in a very kid-friendly way (since, let's face it, it's pretty tough to get a teenager to track their food!)
His goal now is to have a fruit or veggie serving with every meal and a protein serving at each meal and for two snacks. To make that happen, we stocked up on a lot of veggie protein options: nuts, sunflower seeds, string cheese, and yogurt, as well as his standard beans, tofu, and peanut butter. I also make the occasional smoothie and spike it with protein powder . It's definitely helped.
Did I cover everything?
PS--Here's Robin's idea of snowshoeing (from 3 yrs ago!!!)
wow, just catching up with your log. I hope you find out what is happening with your son, I dont really have anything to add that hasnt been covered already. My oldest son is 14, (15 in April) and I have to drag him out of bed in the morning. He did a paper round when he was 13, getting up at 6am every morning and was fine. Then when he turned 14 it was like a hormonal explosion and he literally cannot get fired up in the morning, but his 12 year old brother is still Mr Chirpy.
The snow stuff looks like so much fun! I wish it would snow here instead of just chucking down rain all day..
How is the maitenance thing going? Do you find it harder to eat more at a maitencance level after being in a deficit last year?
Fwiw, teenagers have the greatest need for sleep second to (or perhaps tying) newborn babies. Teens are growing at an incredible pace, puberty is sending raging hormones through their system, a lot of emotional energy is expended in teenage angst, and with their growing sense of wanting to be "adult" they want to stay up later than ever. The average teen gets less than 7 hours of sleep a night when they really need 10+ hours! Naps seem to be acceptable to most teens (especially when they should be doing homework...) but getting enough sleep actually makes the awake hours more productive.

RFLOL...this is so true!! I think homework avoidance is the primary reason my older son naps....
A1: One Armed DB Push Press: 4x6 each side
6x35#
6x35#
6x35#
6x40#
*Thought about trying 40# earlier, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't going too far down into a squat when doing these. I stuck with 35# at first. My right shoulder feels strangely weak on the way back down, but there is no problem as far as pain or whatever, so I think it's ok.
A2: Close Grip Chinup: 3x6
6
6
6
B2: Pushup: 3x12
10x bw+15#
12x bw+15#
12x bw+15#
*I didn't realize I was supposed to be doing 12 reps on the first set...
And without Summer there it was harder to load the plates on my own back!
B3: One Armed DB Row: 3x7 each side
7x35#
8x35# (oops...)
7x35#
C2: Side Plank: 3x30 sec each side
30 sec
30 sec
30 sec
Holy COW! You continue to amaze me. I'm pretty sure that if you were working out in my gym, my "staring friends" would be checking you out!
Those one-arm DB shoulder presses are really impressive, Celeste.

I'm not at home to check, but I believe Paul Chek says exactly that in his book Eat, Move and Be Healthy. I'll have to look tonight and see exactly what he says. I do know when I took a weight training class in college we were taught that sleep is number two on the list of factors that relate to longevity, after heredity.
But Celeste, re your son's tiredness, have you considered mono? I had it when I was 17 and there are a lot of different symptoms that can be associated with it, not just the ones you first think of. I was hospitalized for 6 days and felt like crap with a pounding headache. Not saying it is, just something else to look at if you haven't already. Check for swollen glands, too. Just a thought.
Celeste, good luck with figuring out what's going on with Taylor. My 13.5 year old son also seems to be tired a lot but none of the headaches or nausea so I just contribute it to not enough sleep for his growing body. He goes up to bed at 9pm weekdays but probably doesn't fall asleep until 9:30 or 10:00 and I wake him at 6:00. Weekends he wants to stay up late and sleep until noon! I usually make sure he's asleep by 11:00 and wake him if he's not up by 11:00am which is often the case. He's not as active as Taylor though so I just don't know. It sounds like your plan to track his food for now is a good one.
I've decided to join you on Maximum Strength! Today was Packing Day. My numbers aren't nearly as impressive as yours but hope that means that I have lots of room for improvement!! I already have some questions so I hope you don't mind me picking your brain a bit!

That would be interesting to see--makes sense, though. Especially because when you go to bed at different times every night it makes it hard to wind down on the early nights, and to sleep in when you have the chance!

Makes sense to me.

Hee hee! Love that picture! I didn't experience that on this trip...
Re the food--I noticed that Taylor is actually taking my advice on nutrition stuff. For example, he ate lots of pistachios and some toast with butter for breakfast (he usually has fruit w/that too but I'm way out of groceries.) I have no problem getting him to eat healthy (though he does like his skittles at denton and his pretzels at home...), I just think he needs to eat more. I did make a protein shake for him the other day and he liked it...

Yeah, we have had quite a few mornings that I get home from the gym expecting to find the kids almost ready for school and he's still in bed...
As far as eating at maintenance, it's hard in weird ways. I was having a hard time eating enough at first, until I figured out to add olive oil, extra peanut butter, hummus, larger portions, etc. It's hard also because it's technically ok for me to have a treat now and then (like ONE cookie or ONE piece of pie after snowshoeing around the countryside!), but it's still hard for me to stop and use moderation.

Thanks, Pauline. I'll quote you to him when he wants to stay up later!!
Wow, see what happens when I start responding to everyone and then get sidetracked?! Lots of more responses in the meantime...

Aw, I'm blushing... Don't forget that they're push presses though--as in, using momentum to get the weight up there...

I've considered it, but considering he's so active and not having other symptoms every day, I'm going for the simple answer first...
Thanks for the thought though.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!
I'm so excited!! I'll have a workout buddy, hooray!! I can't wait to read your thoughts on the workouts, and I definitely don't mind questions! I don't have all the answers, but if not we'll have to figure it out together anyway. COOL!
Celeste, not sure this is helpful, but here's some info on teens and sleep: http://life.familyeducation.com/teen/sleep/42904.html . And, like Pauline said earlier, my pediatrician said my 13-year-old son needed to sleep 9-10 hours a night. Not sure if that's the norm or because my son was growing a lot last year (4.5 inches and 20 pounds and still looks like a string bean).
Also, if it's not mono or something of that ilk, Cheryl's son's guidelines along with maybe more red meat (or high iron foods) with a food source that's high in vitamin C. The iron helps anemia and the vitamin C helps the iron to absorb in the body.
Actually, that's very helpful. You know, all this talk is making me consider starting school later so they can sleep till 7:00...hmmm. (No one tell my kids!) Wow, I really liked that website, Karen! I bookmarked it for future use... The article was very interesting and made a lot of sense--I ended up reading the next article as well--about late night communication. Here's an excerpt:
Quote:
Using Their Sleep-Wake Cycle to Connect The silver lining to the reality that society and biology seem to conspire against your teenager's getting enough sleep is that the sleep debt gives you the perfect opportunity to connect with your teenager, for several reasons. First, they've had time to reflect on their day and to put it into perspective—to connect attitudes with behaviors, relationships with moods, big ideas with daily habits. In other words, they have things to say. Second, because it's the end of the day, their normally hypervigilant defenses are relaxed, and they're more apt to say things that they otherwise wouldn't discuss. Third, and again because of the late hour, there is no competition for their attention. No friends calling or dropping by. No critical choices to make about which party to go to later that evening. No agonizing decisions over what clothes to wear.
Teenagers open up most naturally late at night, and wise parents take advantage of this reality; an intrepid few even plan for these opportunities.
It really hit home with me b/c Taylor will come into my room 10 minutes after he's supposed to be in bed and want to talk about his day, what he thinks, etc. He's not yet uncommunicative yet during the day so I'm embarrassed to say I usually am annoyed--I'm trying to get to bed, he's supposed to be in bed, and he chooses NOW to talk! I'm gonna work on that one.
So in other news, yay, I'm excited! My new Precision Nutrition V3 just came via UPS!! It looks really good, can't wait to dive in... BUT I'm being a good flybaby today and getting tons done... BTW, it's $50 off until Jan 31, in case anyone is interested.
How much different is PNV3? I am hesitant because last time I upgraded PN the cost didn't seem justified by the changes/additions. I always like having the latest info but...is it much more substantial this time? I think it should be a LOT cheaper for the upgrade. Or is this an upgrade for you?

I TOTALLY used to do this with my mom...it was my favorite time to talk to her...now I know why! I used to hang out on her bed with her till my dad finally came upstairs...even tho she had sent me to bed and hour ago!
Celeste, glad it was helpful. I found some really great information there, too. My son likes to talk at night, too. Aside from what you posted, I think he likes that his sister isn't there to overhear/interrupt as well. Hard for me to focus after about 9, though, since all I want is to go to bed. We have started letting him go to bed around 9-9:30 on school nights in hopes he'll be asleep by 10, but I told him that also means he can't set his alarm to wake up at 4 so he can get in more reading time.

Wow, that's TOTALLY what happens here--and I'm almost always irritated . The problem is that DH and I usually have about half an hour to see each other uninterrupted--after the kids are supposed to go to bed and before we crash--so I really don't want the interruption. Oh, well. It's all about balance, I guess.

Kathy--I'm not sure. It's actually my first time buying it. It looks good, but I'm not really sure what the differences are.

I made sure to listen and talk last night, even though my focus was getting to BED.

You know, that sounds a little too familiar! Taylor never sets his alarm for 4am to read though, 6:00 maybe, but not for several months! It's more disappearing into the bathroom at 9:30 to read a book...

Snowshoeing seems so interesting, lol. I've never done and I don't know anything about it but I'm glad to hear you had so much fun! And I do't have kids either so I can't really contribute to that convo, but I know I always liked staying up later when I was a teen
I knew I was still a teenager! My husband gets annoyed with me because when we first get into bed I talk his ear off about the day, the weekend or whatever else is on my mind. He always says "can't you talk about this earlier in the night?" I never think of the things I do until then!
I know your workouts are already awesome, but getting that attention in the gym is so cool! People are looking up to you - here and in real life.
I am curious to hear more about PN. I have been on the website a few times and am very tempted to buy it. That and a GoWear Fit, kettlebells, FLTS, running shoes.....yeah its a problem.

No kidding--side planks are tough. It sounds like the Max Strength workouts are really pushing you. Keep it up, sis!
I'm working out vicariously through your thread. LOL. It's kind of like reading a cookbook and envisioning actually creating and eating the deliciousness staring up from the pages, knowing exactly what it will taste like, until you've reached a point where you don't even need to make it because you've already experienced it. That ever happen to you? Okay, then. Not sure I can get my muscles to respond to me just reading your intense workout, but it's worth a shot.
Mrs. celest your amazing haha. you are inspiring me to go to the gym. i dont think i would go if you didnt show up at my house every other day at 645 to take me! haha thanks =]
