Well, today's workout sucked bigtime. So there.
Here's the prologue:
Last night after 10:00, I managed to run my car into a ditch by completely missing a sharp turn on a snow-covered dirt road, going only about 25 mph. There were no nearby houses, no traffic, and no cell-phone coverage. The only good thing was that my husband had headed home a few minutes before me, so I knew he would miss us sooner or later. The thing was, I knew the road was covered with snow (no salt or anything!), I knew that the turn was coming up, and I know how to handle a skid! The car didn't even TRY to turn! It just kept going straight, and nothing I did changed the course even a bit. Taylor and I dug and dug for about 45 minutes, trying to get to solid ground, but the wheels weren't even touching, so we just had to wait for Shawn. Anyway, he pulled us out, we're all ok, and though the power steering is out for some reason (I didn't actually hit anything ), the car is ok. BUT, that made meant I didn't get to bed until after 11:30, which made getting up at 5:15 to go to the gym difficult--I changed my alarm to 6:00 and decided to go even though I'm a baby about getting less than 8 hrs of sleep...
Oh the other factor here is that I ate HORRIBLY yesterday!!! I had decided no junk food at church in the morning b/c we had a soup and sandwich lunch afterwards, and dinner was frozen pizza at my mother-in-law's house. So no junk food became several cookies, a brownie, and two blueberry bars. That was before lunch, and it was downhill from there! Seriously, I probably had 4000 calories yesterday (haven't been home long enough to log it yet.)
Holy crap! You're the poster child for the "When it rains, it pours," saying. I'm so glad you weren't alone when you got stuck--I bet Taylor was a big help--and that someone was watching for you. I bet you were glad to see Shawn! This time it's my turn to be impressed. I'm not sure I would have gotten up at ALL after all that. It's just not right that the gym attacked you, too!
Good girl for getting through to the other side. Hugs! Oh--and if you move to Colorado, I'll spot for you . (Let me know what DH thinks of that....)
Sucks about the bad workout...I know how that can kill a day! Glad you are all ok tho with the car!!!
I didn't know you were a veggie...there's a blog I've been reading cause I was trying to look for veggie recipes to cut my calories...lol...but...she has some really yummy looking stuff on there...here's the site if you're interested: http://chowvegan.com
Glad getting the good ski in cheered you up again...I was gonna suggest going home and beating up your Christmas present...
Yikes - glad you're ok and were rescued... and sorry about the sucky workout. I haven't had to bail from a squat (yet) but I've come very close and could probably hurt myself quite easily if I'm not careful (I gm'd out of one very badly). I guess those really really cool cable machine things at your gym aren't so cool if they don't work...
As for the food. I can only say that I've been there done that. It sucks. You don't even enjoy it enough to make it worthwhile, but you eat it anyway. sigh...
Glad you had fun skiing!
I still like the cable machine thing b/c if I would have been smart enough to just squat back down, I could have gotten out from under the barbell. Oh well. Now I know...

Shake off the bad workout and bad eating, it happens sometimes and its not going to kill you. Oh, and I think the box squats should be 8x3, not 10x3, if I remember right. All in all, it doesnt seem like THAT bad of a workout, that is probably the most challenging workout of the whole phase anyway.
Thanks--I did manage to shake it off. The thing was I actually decided to go to the gym anyway in order to help myself feel BETTER, and just ended up worse. But I was still glad I went, and the skiing was awesome.
The 10x3 thing was a mistake, although now I'm not sure if I actually did 10 sets or just filled in the boxes on the log sheet (there were only 8 empty boxes, not 10!) Anyway, thanks. I made sure to count my sets correctly today.
Hey, I'm eating your "french toast" scrambled eggs right now! I really like them...good idea.

I'm glad things turned around for you though and you had a good late-morning/afternoon.
I think I was just really shocked that I actually had an accident! I've NEVER had an accident or put my car in a ditch before (once did a 360 on an icy dirt road, but ended up going the right way, so I don't count that!

True. I hate that loss of control--reminds me that though I've come a long way, the old tendencies aren't completely gone.

Shake off the bad workout and food. You are always so good about staying the course so this time is no different!
Thanks Bree--that's cause you're my inspiration!

Gee, I'll get back to you on that one...
So I really was going there thinking that it would be good for my mood, etc. Ha ha! Not that day!
Okay, today's workout...MUCH better, thanks!
Maximum Strength, by Eric Cressey Phase 1: Foundation Week 3 (Very High) Day 2 (Upper Body) Weight: 126.2 (-.8 ) Warmup: Foam Rolling/Tennis Ball (at home) Dynamic Warmup #2
*Wow! 80# felt so easy, like I could do another set right away with no rest, and since the trainer was watching me and giving tips I know my elbows were in (he was making sure the cable was locking correctly). So I raised the weight back to 85 and it wasn't so bad! Of course, this was sets of 3, not 4, but still many more, and shorter rest.
B: DB Press, Neutral Grip: 3x10
10x25e
10x25e
10x25e
*Checked my log and the most I've done with these is 3 sets of 4 at 35# dbs. Maybe I shouldn't be putting red here? Dunno, but I couldn't have done 10 at 25# before so !
C: Seated Cable Row:
10x70#
10x70#
10x60#
10x60#
*After raising the weight to 70# last week, I started out at 70# but realized I wasn't sitting far enough back and my grip was too close together. So larger ROM=harder, had to go back down after 2 good sets. But s'ok.
D1: Prone Trap Raise: 3x12
12x5e
12x5e
12x5e
D2: Side Lying External Rotaton: 3x12 each side
12/sidex8#
12/sidex8#
12/sidex8#
*Good workout--I'm going to be sore! And nothing broke on me... Also, the gym owner/trainer was there so he was randomly giving me pointers on form, weight used, etc. So though I'm not looking for any free training, it was nice to get some 1 on 1 feedback. Oh and I'm sore already! Plus sore from yesterday which I didn't expect. I guess 2/3 ROM squats still do SOMETHING for you.
Sucks about the bad workout...I know how that can kill a day! Glad you are all ok tho with the car!!!

True. And it's weird--although I was upset about the workout, and had a residual moodiness b/c of the car thing, when we were digging the car out and trekking up the hill in the pitch dark to try to get cellphone reception, and DOWN the hill to see if we could see any house lights, I wasn't angry, scared, or annoyed--it was more like an adventure. We were (kind of) having fun digging out huge snowdrifts with just tire irons (and laughing b/c I had just put a small shovel by the front door to take out to my car, "just in case"). That's what I'm talking about when I say my whole attitude towards life is different. It's not like I'm happy about getting stuck, but it wasn't a major catastrophe. (The only catastrophe was missing the end of the Steelers game!!!)
x2!
I'm really glad someone knew where to look for you.

I'm interested in veggie food too. I know a lot of veggie recipes, but most of the ones I know are too low in protein or high in starches.

Just catching up with your log... you've been busy LOL! Sorry to hear about the troubles with the car and workout the other day.... thankful that you and Taylor were both OK and that Shawn knew to look for you!

Anyway, he pulled us out, we're all ok, and though the power steering is out for some reason (I didn't actually hit anything ), the car is ok.
That sounds like the best kind of accident, one that nobody got hurt and you knew someone would come looking for you soon. Glad to hear that it worked out well.
Hmmm veggie...whoops...lol...I never could read! Nevermind!!! lol!
Hey,that's ok, it's a great resource! Thanks!

It was the best kind of accident--I kept thinking, what if we had been out and Shawn was at work? We would have had to walk for miles, literally! And Luke and Micah were with us also--they would have frozen!
So I'm so excited this morning! I'm going to go snowshoeing with my friend Jodi on the hill behind my house! It's going to be SOOoo fun! (We have off of school today for a holiday, otherwise known as Taylor's birthday, lol!) I know, to be a homeschooler! But anyway, that means I can go snowshoeing and then have her over for coffee without disturbing our day. (It also means it's a good day to catch up on Ski Denton work though...)
So the other reason I'm happy is that my leg feels better--I never made it on here to whine yesterday, but my left leg was on fire for most of yesterday and I'm not even sure why! Yesterday morning at the gym was upper body, and it didn't hurt before I went in...but from my hip flexor region to halfway down my quad was in so much pain! Not DOMS, it was really weird. Anyway, it's much better this morning, so I don't think I'll have a problem with the snowshoeing...
Wow that workout was awesome! And the red is always appropriate
Thanks for the compliment - I hardly feel like an inspiration! I just keep on keepin' on as best I can. That's why I like this place. Reading a couple logs always gets me out of any non-workout funk I might be in. I usually always feel like working out though - cleaning and laundry not so much.
Have fun today! Sounds great. Its finally warm here today (30's warm - ha!) so I am debating going for a sloppy, slushy run outside.
Holy crap indeed.. few days behind on reading your updates and what happens: you've nearly killed yourself with a car refusing to take a turn in icy conditions.
Your stress resistance is most excellent my girl.. at that moment you didn't feel scared and did exactly what needed to be done. Hats off to you!
No wonder your next day's workout was less than stellar. I'd have been totally surprised if your WO had been great. The one after that one was really good when the tiredness was gone and the extra calories kicked in
Don't do that to me again... OK? Be careful and make that darned snow go away.
Okay, the snowshoeing was GREAT!!! We had such fun! I had never been snowshoeing before either (well, about 10 minutes behind my dad's house once), and wasn't sure what to expect. There is an old logging trail that goes up the mountain behind our house, so my friend met me over here, we layered up, and off we went! I assumed we'd go for 15-20 minutes and then turn around--we ended up going for almost two hours! We just followed the logging road and made our own path when the trail ended, and explored. Actually I've never been up there before, only about 5 minutes up the logging trail with the kids. When we came out of the woods on top, we tried to figure out where we were, knowing our husbands would ask us but we couldn't figure it out... The woods were so quiet, though, and the sun was shining, sparkling off of the snow--it was absolutely beautiful. We saw tracks of several different types of animals and just had a great time talking together--I am SO glad she asked me to go! We were laughing about the fact that we are the only people we know that one of us could just up and suggest something like snowshoeing and have the other jump at the chance. I'm so happy! Then we came back and had coffee and some shoofly pie that someone had given our families (at Denton). It was YUMMY! And I don't feel one bit guilty--I think it was about 500 calories for the size slice I had, but I'm pretty sure we burned that!
Here's a pic:

Wow, I can't believe it's warmer there than here--it was actually only 5 degrees this morning. I was worried about my friend, b/c she was insisting on double digit temps, but she braved the cold and came anyway.

Well, I'll try not to do that to you again, but I don't want to make the snow go away--so there! That's true, what you said about the workout not being so great. I guess I was going to make my mood better... And yeah, yesterday's felt great!

Thanks about the leg--I almost posted, but I was catching up on others' logs in between housework, Denton work, and running kids around, and never got around to it...
Shoot, Shawn just called and asked me to work--today's ladies' day (free lift tickets) and they're already swamped. Well, there goes all the extra stuff I was going to accomplish today. (At least I got my playing in, though!)
Glad snowshoeing was so much fun... that's something that I've never gotten around to trying, but it's probably one winter activity that I might actually enjoy LOL!

Oh, and I take birthdays off too.
Good for you! Birthdays are special!
So I'm still at work, but I'm actually getting quite a few emails answered and some pictures uploaded to the website--Ski Denton FINALLY has internet service! Yay--we've entered the 21st century, hooray! We had to get satellite internet b/c that's the only highspeed service available in this section of the county. Annoying, since 2 miles up the road there is both cable and DSL. Anyway, I'm SO glad, it was really inconvenient to have to do all online work from home.
I had to do quite a bit of "gruntwork" when I got here, but after a few hours I was able to just hang out and do my own work and just help when they got busy. So that's good.
Anyway, I have a question for anyone with knowledge ...
Taylor (age 14 today) has been complaining of being very tired lately. I have been just kind of letting it slide by, thinking he's a teenager, he may be growing, etc etc. But yesterday I realized it's almost every day that he is saying how exhausted he is, often with headaches or nausea. So he's getting 8-9+ hours of sleep a night, not taking any meds that might cause that, he has no medical conditions to speak of, so being so focused on my own diet, my first thought was to food. In asking him what he eats, I realized that while he eats pretty healthy food (fruits and veggies are his preferred snacks), he isn't getting many calories or much protein at all. Does anyone have a good resource for figuring how much an active teen boy (~90 lbs) should be eating? I found a few general diet calculators online, but the two I tried both recommended he get about 2200 cals/day. That's ridiculous, in my opinion, though I may be wrong--it seems like he should be eating at least 3000 calories... Anyway, I gave him a lecture on getting protein and good fats, and fueling what his body is doing (skiing or snowboarding 4-8 hours per day, for starters).
So I know if this continues it's a medical question, not a forum question, but I'm thinking it has more to do with being a teen, active, and undereating than anything else.
I am so not a Dr...and so not that knowledgeable...but...if he's not eating lots of protein...and with all that activity...would it be possible he could be anemic...? (I have been on and off and I've had those symptoms...especially if I'm working out lots...!) Anyway...that's my 2 cents! I hope you can figure out a solution and that he feels better soon!
I am SOOOOOO glad that you guys have all the white stuff. Portland got like 2 feet in Dec and that was MORE than enough for me for a couple of years. Brrrrrrrrrr. Werid on the tiredness thing. You maybe should have him checked out. Usually they just sleep when they are tired. Like all freak'n day....

As for your son - I can't say why he feels bad, but for my DS, we're always trying to get some weight on him and calories in him. He'll drink protein shakes, especially if we mix 'em with a scoop of 'nilla ice cream in the blender... when he was drinking those more regularly his growth curve improved a little bit...
I don't have any advice, but it does sound like he's just not eating enough - especially if he's doing all that activity!! Hope you are able to diagnose and resolve the issue!
I do not have nor was I ever a teen boy, so I have no advice or experience there. Maybe he just needs to eat more. My brother was one of those crazy active kids and the amount of food he could consume was staggering. Still is!
Maximum Strength, by Eric Cressey Phase 1: Foundation Week 2 (Medium) Day 3 (Lower Body) 1-22-09 Weight: 125 (-1.0--still water weight coming off from the weekend)
A: Front Squat: 6x6
6x75#
6x75#
6x75#
6x75#
6x75#
6x75#
*I thought at first that these were going to be a little too easy and I should add weight--but the last few sets I was definitely struggling to get back up with correct form. Cool aside, I see on my notes from last week that I said I "definitely wouldn't be adding weight anytime soon!" So must be I am getting stronger.
B: Rack Pull: 4x6
6x165#
6x165#
6x165#
6x165#
*Same with these. They feel MUCH better, and though I'm still sure they're heavy enough, last week I was going to remove some plates after the third set because it was a little over the top. Today the only problem I had was that I had to set it down after the 3rd rep to readjust my grip.
D2: Reverse Crunch:
12 (no counterweight)
12 (no counterweight)
12 (no counterweight)
*Not perfect form, but good enough that I'm removing the counterweight and working on just using my abs.
Static Stretching
So interesting conversation today with the gym owner--he asked me when I'm going to get certified to be a trainer and start working for him... HA. I replied that that would be awesome, but right now what I'm good at is reading books and doing the workouts that are already set up. It's not like I'm that knowledgeable. Anyway, got a kick out of it.

Actually, that's a good idea. I have had problems with anemia in the past, so I'll keep an eye on that also. We now have a plan and are keeping track of his food and sleep for a week or two, which is what the dr would tell us to do anyway if we went in now. Then if we decide he needs to go, we'll have some data to go by.

lol on the snow thing. I LUV snow (though I'm happy to see spring coming, I must admit.) You know, I make my kids go to bed pretty early (?) I think, but I really feel sleep is important. They go to bed at 9:30 on weekdays and 10 or 10:30 on weekends. Of course now that Taylor's getting older he gets a little more leeway, but I still think he gets more sleep than the average teen. He definitely doesn't have any sleeping in time though, because Saturdays are race team, and Sundays are either race team or church. Poor kid. Maybe we should have a health day for school where we just sleep and eat! Uh, maybe that's pushing the whole homeschool flexibility thing...

The whole sleep thing is SO important...people don't realize how important it is. My hubby said he was reading somewhere..(he couldn't remember where) about sleep and how any of the time you get in BEFORE 12:00 at night is more beneficial or important that the time after...I'll bug him to remember where he saw it. But we've been trying to get to sleep earlier. I definitely notice a difference on the day's I've gotten really good sleep! (also on the weight loss front, the more sleep I get, the easier it slides off!!!)
