The only weird thing was, I was the ONLY mother out there. Out of eight families! Once I realized that I felt really awkward, but after a bit I figured, whatever, it was fun.

I am impressed that you have been out and about with all this yucky weather! We went to martial arts last night and we were sitting in the car before class and it was so cold and the door looked so far away that half of me wanted to tell Shawn to just drive me home!
I love ice skating and I'm glad you had a great time. It is awesome that you were the only mother out there on the ice!
"As far as (healthy) eating, either do it, or don't. Same issues repeated over and over is just insanity. We either commit to the endeavor or pay lip-service to it. This is the hardest part of the whole process, and it needs to be practiced more than the actual physical training. It's mind training." ~ Matt Thorne
"The reason that most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want most for what they want at the moment."
Sounds like a fun day! I haven't been ice skating in years! Not since I moved away from Michigan. We did it alot as kids on the lake (once Dad made sure the ice was frozen enough).

Thanks--it was fun, and hey, what better exercise and quality time with the kids, right?

Hi Leah! I think it's easier for me to go out no matter what the weather because of the ski area--I can't very well be a cold weather wimp, now can I? Although I do draw the line with car windows that won't close! (This morning on the way to the gym got smarter and took dh's car--it was WARM!)

Yeah, I figured the calories wouldn't make a difference--they probably weren't even over. I just hate eating junk food that I don't really want, you know what I mean? Though I didn't have to have the fries, I was just SO hungry!

That sounds like lots of fun--I'm finding out that a lot of things we did as kids are really still fun now, so why not do them!
So yesterday's "energy workout"/activity ended up being half an hour of hauling water/hay/horse poop, and half an hour of shoveling. I didn't put a dent in the driveway snow, but at least the walkways are clear, and I actually had to shovel a path for the wheelbarrow down to the manure pile. For some reason that irked me, but you just can't get a full, heavy wheelbarrow through a foot of snow very easily! Back with a workout report in a bit...
Maximum Strength, by Eric Cressey Phase 1: Foundation Week 2 (Medium) Day 3 (Lower Body) 1-15-09 Weight: 124.2 Warmup: Foam Rolling/Tennis Ball (at home) Dynamic Warmup #1
A: Front Squat: 4x6
6x75#
6x75#
6x75#
6x75#
*I WAS going to parallel on these--checked several times! They were definitely hard enough though, I won't be adding weight any time soon.
B: Rack Pull: 3x6
6x165#
6x165#
6x165#
*Still felt a little awkward, but form was good as far as I could tell until the last rep of each set. For some reason I catch myself rounding my back on the way back down, putting the bar down "carefully". Something to do with putting it down on "air." Oh well. I was about to take off some weight after the third set when I saw I only needed to do three today.
C: Bulgarian Split Squat: 3x6 (each leg)
6x25e
6x25e
6x25e
*A little easier this time, though again I'm not sure I will be moving to 30's very quickly.
D1: Pull Through:
10x50#
10x60#
10x70#
D2: Reverse Crunch:
12 (w/2# db as counterweight)
12 (w/2# db as counterweight)
12 (w/2# db as counterweight)
*Can I count a 2# db as a PR?! Trying to move to no counterweight, but when I do that I start using my whole body more instead of just the lower abs.
Some pretty tough workouts you are posting! I have trouble with front squat form. I am trying to work on it but I find it so much easier to go below parallel on back squats. I hope that is normal. I have to try harder to get there with front squats.
And I also got tired reading about your busy day(s)!
Wow! What a crazy day. Sounds like a blast though.
The duct taping the window reminded me of my first car. It was pretty much held together by duct tape, and you had to make sure that you locked the driver-side door when the car was moving, otherwise it fell off. The day I was driving my dad to the store and the steering wheel fell off was the end of that car...
Great workouts by the way! You're doing some amazing stuff in here.
Sounds like a fun day, despite all the little snafu's along the way.
Kick ass workout!!!

WOW - that was some car!! Our (me, my brother and sister - we had to share!!) first car had patches riveted onto the body!
Yup, that counts as a PR - you're doing the exercise with less assistance. Nice job.
...it just sounds kinda lame!...

I'm not sure if my form is great--EC recommends using the cross grip instead of the clean grip, but I just focus on elbows up, head up, back straight, bar against throat (aak!), and squatting till parallel. It is a lot to think about! When I went into the other room to look in the mirror, I squatted till it felt the same and it was definitely a little below parallel...so that's the best I can do if I can't see myself.

Oh my gosh, totally laughing here!!!! Yeah, I guess that would be the end of a car!!! My car's not actually that old, it's a Chevy Yukon, maybe 2000? But the windows have always had some sort of problem--I shouldn't have trusted it even though it was "fixed" this summer. Lesson learned this time though...
Nice skating....holy crazy day tho... They were definitely all jealous like Lisa said!
I had a car like that too...72 Dodge Dart...biggest POS ever...I LOVED IT...only car I could park in Washington Square Park that was still there when we got back...(at 4am) even tho I left all the doors open...
Celeste, sounded like a really fun ice skating day. I have skated with the kids before, but when my son had his middle school trip for ice skating I didn't join in. There were about 50 kids and a couple of them had no control, so only two (male) teachers were on the ice with the kids.

My brother and I had to share a car like that, too. I remember it was a Honda Accord (about 20 years old at the time) and we had to take turns starting it during school breaks in the winter so it would start when it was time to go home. The worst was when I finished my first year of college and had to drive it to and from work. It died while I was driving at 55 mph . The next day I made my dad go shopping with me and bought a new car.

Too bad it didn't do that when the weather was more mild so you could learn your lesson then. It's never that easy though .

Too funny Karen. Mine was a red 1978 Honda Accord hatchback (named Alfred). It made the trip from New Mexico to Dallas a couple of times before totally crapping out. Oh to be a teen-ager again...
Man, you are one busy woman! I, too, am jealous of the skiing. I was a ski instructor when I was in high school, and skied several times a week during my rowing coaching years, post college. I miss it so much! But these days, it's so expensive to keep up with decent equipment, and then lift tickets are $80/day around here... I can't justify it.
I had you in mind when I was at the gym yesterday, doing my walking lunges. I don't do them very often, and thought to myself "SHE uses 25# dumb bells; I surely can." It was pretty hard

I'm late, but what a fun day, and LOL on all the little "incidents" on the way to skating. I often feel like you described being on the ice when I'm at karate - all the moms sitting there watching their kids (kids class is right before adults) and here I am in my uniform, the only woman (most of the time) going into the actual class. But I figure hey, I'm out there DOING IT and they're just watching - which is the better way to live????

Now THAT's a car, even the crooks don't want it!!!

Wow, I can totally understand not skating with 50 preteens and hardly any protection!!! This was much more laid back.

Who knew everyone had so many cool car stories?! Makes my first car look like a gem!

Yeah, skiing can get expensive--our rates are pretty cheap, but we're way off the beaten path. We got our kids snowboards this year for Christmas, and I was SO glad we could get the wholesale price. That was expensive enough!
LOL on the lunges! Knowing you, you did sets of like 4,000 or something, though, in which case I wouldn't be using ANY dumbbells, you'd be carrying me!

Oh - and nice workout too!
True, Bytsi. I have decided that I want to LIVE life, not sit and watch from the sidelines.

Celesta, it's called Maximum Strength, by Eric Cressey. It's a 16 week program focused on building all-around strength.
Celeste, I am amazed you can do BSS with 50# total. WOW!!
We had a '75 lime green Pinto. One day a friend was helping us move and drove the Pinto for us to the new house. Our then 10 year old son was with him. When our friend went to shift, the gearshift came right out in his hand. We forgot to tell him it was loose. He was stuck in second gear on the highway until he could finally jam the gearshift back in. It was hilarious. My son will never forget that.
A1: One Armed DB Push Press: 4x6 each side
6x35#
6x35#
6x35#
6x40#
*Thought about trying 40# earlier, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't going too far down into a squat when doing these. I stuck with 35# at first. My right shoulder feels strangely weak on the way back down, but there is no problem as far as pain or whatever, so I think it's ok.
A2: Close Grip Chinup: 3x6
6
6
6
B2: Pushup: 3x12
10x bw+15#
12x bw+15#
12x bw+15#
*I didn't realize I was supposed to be doing 12 reps on the first set...
And without Summer there it was harder to load the plates on my own back!
B3: One Armed DB Row: 3x7 each side
7x35#
8x35# (oops...)
7x35#
*This was a little uncomfortable on my left shoulder. I am not sure to continue or skip them, but it seems like a YTWL or similar, in that it will be good for my shoulders? I could mostly tell how far to rotate my arm before it would hurt, so could stop at the right spot (almost perpendicular to the floor, anyway.) Any insights on this? Kept this comment in b/c it's still the same and I'm just not sure if I'm helping my shoulders or possibly injuring/chancing injury.
C2: Side Plank: 3x30 sec each side
30 sec
30 sec
30 sec
*Shaking during these!!! I keep forgetting that, yes, these are hard!
Another fun, challenging workout! I probably should have held the planks longer, b/c I could have, for 10 seconds at least, but they were already hard so I didn't even think of it.
I have never done the kneeling cable ext. rotation, so I can't help much with advice.
Lotsa red there! That one armed DB push press is amazing. I always wondered how people got plates on their backs by themselves.....I am so not that coordinated.
My first car was a Toyota Camry named Rhoda. She had a power button on the console, which I have yet to find out what it does, and if you took a corner to sharp the key would fall out of the ignition. I was lucky that my parents give me a car, but it looked pretty sad in our high school parking lot where most of the kids got brand new cars when they turned 16!
Celeste, my coach really loves Cressey and is, in fact, working with one of his athletes, who is in our area for a time. She is really familiar with all of his mobility stuff and she always has me to the sleeper stretch for my shoulders. You may want to try it if you haven't already. Really read through the description so you get it right. It's a pretty powerful stretch.

I have to sub dbs b/c we don't have a cable column, but you're basically holding your forearms parallel to the floor at shoulder level, and then rotating them upward so they're straight up. When I lower the dbs my left shoulder has a slight pain, but I just lower slightly less than the right.
As far as the pushups with plates go, it was a sight, but I basically put them on my lower back when I was on all fours and then carefully lowered myself into a pushup position. Earlier I had the weights on my upper back, but I couldn't do that myself...
I love how everyone has horrid car stories! My worst story is that my first car (a Ford Mustang, don't remember what year, but it was a junker, not a classic), would only go 35 mph on the first day I drove it to school, with no passing zone the entire way! I was really embarrassed, but at least it didn't fall apart!!!

Jane, the sleeper stretch is part of my warmup, as are scap pushups and scapular wall slides. I also roll (with a tennis ball) around the shoulder and scapular area before the warmup. Thanks for the tip though, if I didn't know about it, I would sure want to!
Yeah, actually I planned on bringing a backpack with me along with my "box" and resistance band. Just forgot it, and it worked with Summer as a slave last time! Hopefully I'll remember it next time...
Okay, I need some nutrition advice. I used to roll my eyes at people who said they were having a hard time eating enough on maintenance or on a bulk. My thought was that I could easily get 2000+ calories in if I wanted to! That still stands, but it involves cookies, pizza, wings, junk food. I am really having a hard time figuring out what to eat in order to get enough calories in for the day (and still eat clean), and I'm only at 2000, not like I'm trying to eat 3500 or something.
I know the basics, of course, and I know I can randomly add good fats by eating a handful of nuts, etc. But I want to eat good yummy food that's more interesting than what I've been eating on a deficit. I've done pretty well finding low calorie recipes that still incorporate a lot of protein, but now I feel like I could be doing better, seeing as how I have more to play with. Does that make sense? I'm often scrambling to fill my "quota" by the end of the day, adding cheese or protein shakes to get to the total I want. And that doesn't seem wise, either, considering my body uses calories evenly throughout the day (even more in the mornings when I work out). It's not like my body draws a line at midnight and asks for its 2000 calories for the day so it can use them then.
Anyway, here are some of my eats from the last few days. Suggestions appreciated!
So yesterday I feel like I did a better job at spreading my food out throughout the day. I don't always go so heavy on the fruits and veggies, but the same result applies...
It sounds like you've got two opposing ideas here: 1) That you want your diet to be something other than what it currently is because you have more calories to play with, and 2) You still want to eat clean. I'm thinking just because you get more calories in a day shouldn't radically change what you eat, just the portion sizes. That said, creativity and diversity in diet can happen at any calorie level - just the portion sizes are different. Have you tried the vegetarian recipes I posted in your log a while back? Maybe they will provide some ideas/inspiration.

How do you feel about eggs? Personally, I love eggs so I eat alot of them to get to my caloric needs. Sometimes I make omelets with mozzarella cheese and then I season it with salt, pepper, and basil (lots of basil, i love it and it goes good with mozzarella.) Or I will do sauteed onions, green pepper, bacon, and cheese....or for something different try scrambled eggs with a good dose of splenda and cinnamon, kind of like french toast eggs. They are pretty tasty.
Another thing I make sometimes is a pasta dish. I use a few servings of whole wheat pasta, 1 lb of extra lean ground beef, olive oil, and then for seasoning I combine a little Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb seasoning, lots of basil, black pepper, oregano and salt. Emphasis on lots of basil
I can't offer much help other than that, The majority of my cals come from oats, eggs, tuna/chicken, cottage cheese, and peanut butter....not very exciting I know.
