Hey Celeste -
I hope your son's birthday turns out wonderful! I am really impressed at how many cookies you have turned down. I need to be more like you!
Actually, looks pretty cool. From the sounds of what you did today, you got lots of NEAT. Maybe not 10 cookies worth, but you never know.
Probably not, but I guess it won't kill me. I was better today, though not perfect eating-wise. And I did get to ski.

Thanks! He was SO excited and kept hugging me and saying thank you all day long. It was neat, because although I did buy the tools, it wasn't like we spent much money--just put together an area where he could do what he loves to do without being shuffled around because he's in the way or making too much of a mess. He is VERY excited!
So, no cookies today, but I did treat myself with some chili cheese fries at work. Other than that I ate pretty healthy though... Sister is coming in from Colorado tomorrow with her dh and 2 kids, so I have a lot to do in this evening!!!
Okay, so I forgot to post about today at the ski area. This weekend is the first that a lot of the "regulars" were back and that I was around for more than a few minutes here or there. I got a lot of compliments and questions on my weight loss, actually so many that it got to be a little overwhelming, but here are the best stories...
An employee from previous years was there boarding, and happened to be snoozing in the sun in the main part of the lodge, stretched out across a couple chairs. When I walked by, he opened an eye, and I asked him if he had seen Shawn. He LEAPT out of his chair and yelled, "Holy Cow, you look GREAT! Oh my gosh! Wow! You're a COUGAR! ROWR!" I kid you not. Ha ha!! I don't know what the heck the cougar thing was about...
I was walking through the snack bar during a break in the ski instructors' clinic this afternoon, and one of them stopped me and said I looked great, how much had I lost, etc etc. It was a neat conversation b/c he was actually interested in what I'm doing as far as working out, and we were talking about fitness, etc. Then another lady walked up and said, "yeah, I couldn't believe it! I didn't even recognize her!", and another one came up and joined in, and it was like a crowd formed, all of a sudden, like TEN people all talking about my weight loss and comparing notes with each other, oh my gosh, it was really embarrassing! Complimentary, but a little over the top. I was beet red and sweating and VERY uncomfortable
Celeste, I understand how you feel. We had our annual Christmas party last weekend and I didn't even know what to say to people after a while. You deserved it though and I'm sure they've moved on and won't make you feel uncomfortable again .

Yes, but happy just the same. Well deserved accolades to be sure.

So - how did the bday party / workspace turn out?
Thanks, Bytsi. The birthday went very well. We let him "open" one present before we left for skiing in the morning, which was of course the basement setup with the tools. He was completely wide-eyed and ecstatic over the whole thing. The funny thing was that he commented on every tool--what he would do with it, how nice it would be to "actually have different size screwdrivers all in one place", and he totally flipped over the adjustable wrench--then he won't have to go searching for the right size wrench anymore! I didn't even know he USED wrenches! Later at Denton we had a little birthday party so Dad could be there, and my mom gave him a box of odds and ends to use in his inventions. He was so excited it was really funny! So that idea was a hit.

How'd the birthday thing for Micah go?
Congrats on all your compliments too!

Thanks everyone! I forgot how dramatic the change is, because I see myself every day...
Soo, Packing Day for Maximum Strength today! This was fun, as I've never figured out a 1RM for most exercises (except deadlifts). Of course these are all PRs since I haven't done it before.
Body Weight: 122.8
Foam Rolling/Dynamic Warmup
1. Broad Jump: 82.5"
2. Box Squat: 8x25#
3x95#
1x115#
1x135#
1x145#
Didn't try any more b/c I was wobbly on the last one..
(My "box" is a rubbermaid tub that I brought from home--it brings me a little lower than parallel)
3. Bench Press: 8x25#
4x75#
1x95#
115# FAIL
110# FAIL
1x105#
4. Deadlift: 8x45#
3x95#
3x135#
1x155# (Last PR was 160#)
1x165#
1x175#
1x185#
1x190#
195# FAIL
5. Weighted Chinups: 3xBW, 1x20# , 3x14# (3RM=14#)
I'm behind, catching up. Loved hearing about your compliments...that is so cool! But yeah, I can see where you might get to the point of wanting say to say, all right, all right, enough already! And I thought a cougar was like a hot OLDER woman, like 50's. That was my understanding, so he definitely missed in that one since you are way too young to fit into that category. The story about your son's birthday was great, too. That is so neat that he got so excited about the wrenches and the screwdrivers. No telling what kinds of projects he's going to come up with...that is really cool.
And last but not least, OMG...190lbs. 1RM DL??? You are so friggin' strong, lady. I did this early last year and I was at 160, but I doubt I'm there now. And at 122 lbs.! Also, the box squat...I'm blown away. I had 155 on a regular back squat, failed (scary) at 160 lbs. But I know box squats are harder and you have to use a lot less weight. Is that rubbermaid box really strong enough? I was wondering what I could use at my gym for these...I guess an aerobic step with 6 or so risers. Good luck with the program. I am putting this one off because it seems to have a lot of exercises that would be hard to pull off in my gym, and I'm wanting to try Power Training, too.
190? Oooowie! You are so strong!! I'm glad your son loved his present. What a really neat idea. I happened to do my makeover thing (new wardrobe and hair style) at the end of my fat loss efforts over a year ago and I continue getting compliments and questions from people. It is a little overwhelming but encouraging at the same time.

Okay, you just burst my bubble!!!! Come on! Well I did need taken down a peg or two...

So that rubbermaid box--I have no idea--I'm not really sitting on it, so it doesn't have to hold my weight, right? And I have no idea as these are really the first "real" squats I've done with a barbell. Maybe I'm doing them wrong? I'll read the directions again from the book and watch a video or two. I didn't really think they were that much different except you go as low as the box and your feet are a little wider. This gym doesn't have enough risers for the step, and the benches are too tall, of course.

Hi Pauline! Thanks for your comments--and the encouragement. I remember looking at your makeover page--it was really neat.

It was actually really fun to try it and see...a nice start to my rest week, though I felt guilty not really getting in a "real" workout.

I had too look up that cougar thing. Sorry! I didn't mean to burst your bubble. I just think he didn't know what he was saying. Anyway, I found this link.

I didn't realize that you hadn't done barbell back squats before. But my understanding with box squats...and the way I've seen them done...you do sit down on the box. Sitting on the box takes out the stretch reflex that gives you that bounce to start back up making them harder, thus unable to use as much weight. The description in Maximum Strength says to sit lightly on the box, don't bounce, and explode off the box. So, you are not resting into the box with all of your weight, but do actually sit on it. Either way, I think 145 lbs. is really impressive if you've never done real barbell squats before.

I clicked on the link for local listings and some of those women were only 43 and 44. No!!! That can't be right!
Cougar – an older woman, usually in her 40s or older, who usually sexually pursues men in their 20s and 30s.The term has been used in (American) TV series, advertising and film. The 2007 film Cougar Club was dedicated to the subject.
One of the guys I go to school with (who occasionally drinks with us) is a guy in his 20s who wears a t-shirt with 'cougar bait' on it. Stopped one of the teachers in his tracks the first day he was wearing it. And although I now know his name he'll likely always be 'cougar bait' in my head.
When I went to that dating site one of the men was in his 20's seeking a 30-50 year old cougar! Now he is way off. I guess he's thinking anyone his senior fits the bill. I hate the term--yuck. But it looks like Celeste and I are both off the hook--she's not old enough and I'm not hunting for younger men!
Okay, that is totally funny about the whole cougar thing!!! Almost not funny though--it's stretching my sense of humor! So I have to find out if this guy knew what he was saying--if he didn't I'm going to give him a really hard time, and if he did I'm going to have to kill him...slowly.

Okay, maybe I'll do that one again. I didn't actually sit, but I paused at the bottom. I think i was doing them more as regular squats than box squats. Oh well. Thanks for the info though.

Yeah seriously--I definitely am not on the prowl! YUK. I had to wait till my husband was 35 for him to even START growing up! I would die before I start hunting down young guys. Blech.
Well if the guy was in his early 30s or less perhaps he was trying to tell YOU something. Dating younger guys is cool sometimes. LOL!
I remember just awhile ago when I was getting the same attention from everyone. There comes a time when you just pop and really change configurations and people all stand up and notice at the same time. It's weird and freaky and great all at the same time.

Just awesome Celeste!!! I am super impressed at your numbers and this just reinforces the thought that you are maintaining your muscle even though the scale is dropping.
I don't have Maxium Strength. Does the book suggest that you determine your 1RM? Is that how you determine the amount to lift in the program? Who spotted you on your lifts? I wouldn't want to try this without someone I felt comfortable with.

Thanks Karla! (Although I don't my husband would think it was cool if I was dating younger guys!) This guy is really a kid, I'd be surprised if he was 21, so I'm sure I'm "old" to him.
thanks Jane! I'll check it out when I have some time.

Chloe, yes, the program has you doing sets of x reps with a certain % of your 1RM. And of course, the whole idea is to get stronger, so I supppose a defined starting point is a good idea.
Well, I have got some great stories to share, Christmas-wise, but no time at the moment. Maybe tomorrow evening! Merry Christmas to everyone! I didn't make it to everybody's logs, but I want everyone to know how much I appreciate your encouragement, support, friendship, and knowledge. I never would have made it this far if it hadn't been for this forum. Merry Christmas!!
Celeste--I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas. It is so much fun when the kids are still young and you have lots of family to share the time with. Enjoy!

Cracking up, Anne! I knew a young man who thought telling a female friend she had "thunder thighs" was a compliment. He didn't understand her negative reaction until we clued him in later.
