I find that with the treadmill. Last winter when I spent more time on it I went through a couple of seasons of a show I hadn't watched before (on DVD). It did go fairly quickly though.

I subscribe (guilty pleasure?) to Us and Entertainment Weekly - but I ONLY let myself read 'em if I'm working out while I read... my version, I guess, of dangling a carrot in front of my face.
I usually try to read or watch a movie on my laptop when I'm on the elliptical in the living room, but the laptop is so quiet that I miss half of it. It IS way easier this way! So tonight, 60 minutes of 70% hr or so (I did a quick search to figure out my max, so I need to do some research and find out the best way). I actually really had trouble slowing down enough to keep it below 135! We were watching survivor, so hey, nothing better to do, right?!

Yeah, isn't it lovely! I just realized we're going to have to miss this Saturday b/c my kids have a Bible quiz an hour away. Well, maybe we'll get back in time for the afternoon...
BTW, I have to go to actual work tomorrow (vs working at home) and I WILL eat right! Last week when I went is when I had all those candy and granola bars in one day. None of that tomorrow!
Speaking of which, I am beginning to ramble, but I've actually made a plan for December. I am really excited about starting Maximum Strength in January, so I'm going to work really hard to lose a couple more pounds and get the body fat % down where I want it. 22-23%? I'll take a rest week, probably about Christmas time, and then start Maximum Strength on maintenance or slightly above. I love this book and the program sounds really fun, so it'll be good motivation to stay on track!
Sounds like you have a great plan in place! I am hoping to get down to where I will be able to do some muscle gaining/bulk someday.
I am also one of those ADD cardio machine people. I can run for what seems like hours outdoors, but get me on the treadmill and its game over. I do wish I had one at home though and could watch tv while on it. I can at the gym, but all that they have on is the major networks and ESPN. I love me some sports, but reading closed captioning about Plaxico Burress for a half hour gets old
Oh, that sucks! At my gym, each treadmill (or any cardio equipment) has its own private TV screen right on the treadmill. You just use ear buds or whatever to listen privately. I tend to watch the Food Network when I'm on the treadmill. Probably not the best idea! LOL!

I still can't "say" that I'm going to do a bulk lol! I think it will take a while to really to wrap my head around it. Re the tv thing, our gym has 2 small tvs in the corners of the room, they're really too far to read the closed captioning, and you have to pay for the headphones. So nah.

Wow! That is way cool! And I was impressed by the little fans on the elliptical trainers at the new gym I'm switching to!
Oops. I posted before I was ready! Anyway, here's a workout!
12/5/08
Foam Rolling as per Maximum Strength (no tennis ball stuff yet, lol!)
Dynamic Warmup/Mobility:
Kneeling RF/TFL Stretch
Sleeper Stretch
Supine Bridge (did one-legged)
Reach, Roll, and Lift
Wall Ankle Mobilization
X-Band Walk
Pull-Back Butt Kick
Cradle Walk
Broomstick Pec Mobilizaton
Squat to Stand
Chinups: 8, 6, 6 Lunges: 3x15 @ 20e Deadlifts: 3x10@ 125# DB Snatches: 3x15 @ 20# Bench Press: 3x10 @ 70# Tricep Extension: 3x10 @ 48# Pushup Combo: 3x5 each of pushups, pushups w/pause at bottom, push-jacks Situps w/medicine ball: 2x25
Wow! This felt like more than that! Chinups: I wimped out on these--I can tell when it's a day I can do 10, and this was it. Usually when I do as many as I can I'm very sick to my stomach afterwards, but not today. Lungeswalking lunges tweaked my knees a bit so I lowered the weights a bit, stayed stationary, and watched my form in the mirror carefully) Deadlifts: PR is for # of reps--Bree inspired me so I decided to try it! DB Snatches: Wanted to use 25# db but someone was using them for quite a while so I upped the # of reps to 15 instead of 10. Pretty hard still. Bench Press: I changed my workout format to 3 sets of 10 instead of 10, 8, 6 like I did with my trainer. Mostly just to switch things up a bit. Some things I went to 15. Anyway, this was cool b/c before I could barely get out those 10/8/6, so 3x10 was a big step. Tricep Extension: This was technically a pr, but I just don't usually do these so I didn't get real excited. Pushup Combo: Surprisingly challenging at the end of the workout!Situps w/medicine ball: ho-hum
So, off to work (late)--I'm bringing my lunch so I think I'll do fine.
Chin-ups - do you do any specific warmups for these?
Deadlifts - Grats on the PR
DB Snatches - If your current goal is to bulk, what about going to the 30lb dumbbell?
Bench Press - Grats on the PR here as well.
Push-up Combo - what's a push-jack?
Sit-ups - try putting your feet against a bench for these, if what you did was too easy.
No rows in this workout?
Tom--I don't do any warmups specific to the chinups, but several of the mobility/stretching exercises warm up my upper body.
As for the snatches, my current goal is still fat loss until hopefully the end of December. Then I plan to at least go to maintenance. So while the 20's may have been a mistake, I don't think I could have gotten 3x10 with the 30's. I was also babying my knees a bit.
Push-jacks are just like jumping jacks in a pushup position, only using your feet. Actually relatively easy, but at the end of a workout, after bench presses AND pushups (and those pauses at the bottom are killers), they're not so easy anymore!
The situps weren't necessarily too easy, it's just that I did crunches for so long with no results--it's the chinups/lunges or anything else with core tight/and PLANKS that give the results! So I think next time if/when I do that workout, I'll sub planks for the crunches.
ROWS! That's what we were missing! How did that happen? Duh. Every time I did this I felt like there was something lacking. I'll add that too.
Oh, that sucks! At my gym, each treadmill (or any cardio equipment) has its own private TV screen right on the treadmill. You just use ear buds or whatever to listen privately. I tend to watch the Food Network when I'm on the treadmill. Probably not the best idea! LOL!
This is something I've never understood. Maybe it's cuz I don't watch Food Network (even outside of the gym), but it's always on at the gym, and I don't see how anyone can watch all that food and cooking while working out! It would make me crazy (crazier?)! LOL!
I've been known to watch Top Chef or Hell's Kitchen right after The Biggest Loser, or right after an evening workout!
Okay, I'm about to complain for a bit. You know how I said that fat loss was my goal for December? I knew it would be hard, but I'm getting a taste of how hard really quickly! Last night dh "supported" my new plan by making a cheesecake --I didn't have ANY (just kept telling myself it was from a box so it wouldn't taste good anyway). Then today I only had 1/2 hr from getting home from work till I had to have dinner ready, and I hadn't realized that in the morning, so I "had" to cook two frozen pizzas he had brought home (I don't buy them, so who knows where he got them...). I had accidentally already eaten most of my cals for the day (miscalculation when packing lunch...) and ended up having some shrimp I found frozen in the bottom of the freezer and a BAG of frozen veggies with garlic and parmesan cheese.
THEN my kids had to go to this coffeehouse put on by a local church where they were playing the chimes in a few songs. This is a pretty cool thing that the church does every friday, but the first time I've been. They serve FREE cappucinos, lattes, ice cream sundaes, root beer floats, homemade brownies, blueberry bread, pumpkin bread, etc etc etc. AAAAAHHHHHHHH! Usually I would have had a coffee and one piece of something, no guilt, but if I'm going to do this, I need to plan those indulgences few and far between! So I managed to resist. Of course when I came home, the pizza was still on the table (one of my FAVORITE junk foods!!!), but I put it away and here I am. Whine, whine. That's life, I know, but I'm really hungry and grumpy with dh who didn't bother to got to the coffehouse OR clean up dinner OR put the boys to bed. But I'm still not eating. So there. Whew, I feel better now that I got that off my chest.
Well, I'm impressed. I suspect after a day like that, I'd have been three sheets (of pizza, that is) to the wind by now!
Actually, H brought home pizza and wings for the kids, and I had one wing. Then we went to see my daughter be inducted into the National Honor Society (mommy brag!) and they had all kinds of desserts... so far I haven't given in... we'll see. I'm hungry.
Ha ha, thanks! I usually would too... And hey, I forgot to mention the Butterfinger dh pulled out as we were eating lunch today! All those goodies at work are tempting...
Good luck to you too--I LOVE pizza and wings, and desserts...hope you can resist! And hey, congrats to your whiz kid daughter!
Forgot--40 minutes on elliptical this evening, HR 70-75%. No skiing tomorrow, my kids have another Bible Quiz Meet out of town. Which means we'll be going to Spragues!!! (Yummy restaurant known for their "homemade" breakfasts served all day and the maple syrup that they make on-site). I MUST have a salad! I MUST!!!!
Celeste, you're cracking me up. Good for you on fighting off the alluring calories.
Thanks Pauline! Anything for a laugh...
So...WooHoo!!!!
New low today!
125.2!
I saw 125.4 a while ago (actually the last day of the challenge), but have been around 126-127 since. So all my resistance paid off. If only I can keep it up.
However, bf% still reads 23.3% at 53.6% hydration (I only "count" the # as comparable with previous results if it's 53% exactly.) So the last time I had the same hydration level (Nov 23) my bf% was the same. Darn.

Congrats on the new low Celeste!!! You are doing awesome resisting all that temptation. I don't know if I believe your bf%. You are looking so lean. I assume you are using some type of bioimpedence scale. I just don't know if I'd trust it. Even for trending. I got a new scale back in Aug for just that purpose and it has me at 23-24% most of the time. When I showed my pics to Leigh and told her I wanted to look like Jaime Eason (at 18% bf), she lead me to believe that I was nearly there. I certainly am no expert but if you look at the pics of bf% that Leigh had posted on the FLTS forum, I really think you are lower than you think.
Oh, and I checked out Ski Denton. You are 3 1/2 hours from me. We will be coming this season. I'd love to meet up. I'll give you a heads up when we decide which weekend.
Well done! Your workouts look great, and congrats on the scale weight. My gym has treadmills with big windows that look out on to a park and a street so there is always something going on to look at, whether it be a dog going spastic or people walking around.
I get tempted badly by food too, especially when the husband decides he has craving for chips or pizza. Its hard to resist. I heard a good saying the other day for temptation. Instead of thinking 'what am I doing', think 'who am I being'. This works for me, so when I see my fav chocolate instead of thinking, I am going crazy for that right now, I think , I am being committed to getting in to my jeans this month!
Regarding The Biggest Loser. I HATE Vicki. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaate. And if she lands below the yellow line next week where America gets to vote for the 3rd person to be in the final 3, you bet I will voting to keep her ass out!!!

Oh wow, how cool! That would be really exciting--do let me know when you'll be heading up!
As for the body fat %, your words are very kind. I do think my behind could lose a few pounds of fat though! Of course, I'll check out that thread if I can find it. I was just thinking I need to get over to the FLTS forum more often because I'm always learning some interesting tidbit of info.

I totally agree! (Although I have to admit, I'm behind a few episodes. I watch on my computer while folding laundry and haven't gotten caught up yet!)
So, today went VERY well! We had a really amazing day (the kids and I). First we had the Bible quiz (which, in case it's new to you, is kinda like jeopardy only pertaining to verses the kids have memorized). It may sound boring, but ends up getting pretty exciting and can become very funny. The kids have to know their verses inside and out and it's really neat to see them rattle them off. Anyway, that went reasonably well, and the coaches took everyone out to lunch afterwards to Sprague's. I watched everyone else eat lobster bisque, reuben sandwiches, all-you-can eat pancakes with maple syrup, and huge waffles with berries and cream!!!!! mmmmmmmmmmmm....... Ahem. Anyway, my salad was very good though the lettuce was ICEBERG! But I made it through lunch and was satisfied.
Then since we were nearly in Olean anyway (closest Walmart, mall, etc), we decided we better go shopping. Both my older kids desparately needed new sneakers, jeans, and Bethany needed a Christmas outfit. Not to mention I figured I'd better get some Christmas shopping done. We went to the mall for a while, got the necessities, and I had fun sending Taylor and Bethany off on missions to buy presents for other kids while they weren't looking! Bethany snuck off to get some Webkinz for the younger boys, and Taylor got some Bath and Body Works lotion for Bethany, stuff like that. Everyone was so helpful and cooperative that I let them go to the arcade (a first) and spend a couple dollars. They had so much fun--actually I expected lots of fighting and begging for more money, but none of that.
And for the amazing news, I actually had fun clothes shopping! After all my complaining last time! An employee in one department store was helping me in the midst of my normal frustrations when she looked me up and down and said, "you know, you need to be in the juniors department!" So we marched over there and found two pr of dress pants that look great and were way on sale for like $15. Also got 3 dressy shirts for around $10 each (that was 70% off the clearance price!) AND Old Navy was having their $12 sale again on jeans, of which I could use a couple, so we headed over there. The kids got the stuff they needed while I tried on about THIRTY pair of jeans! I am NOT exaggerating! Finally the lady at the desk said if the jeans were gapping in the back, it was the size, not the style, and I should go down a size. I ended up finding 3 pr of jeans that fit perfectly, size ONE!!! Can you believe it?! Okay, I realized they're probably a 4 from high school days, but considering the last pr of jeans I bought from them was a 10, you can see why I would be happy. They're slightly tight, but I think they'll look good after they stretch out from being worn a few hours. So not only did I get 5 pr of pants and 4 shirts for about $120, but it wasn't nearly so painful. (And I didn't have to feel guilty b/c dh already said I should buy myself clothes for Christmas from him. )
So can you tell I'm wound up? We just got back and I'm really happy. Good day with the kids, good eating (oh yeah, had a subway salad for dinner), and good shopping! Sorry for being so verbose...

Whoot! Congrats on the size 1! It feels great, eh?
Yeah, it does. Slightly ridiculous, but still feels good!
Today, 124.2!!!
My body is strange, but I'll take it.
Yay on the scale whoosh! That's what happens to me all the time . . . same . . . same . . . same . . . get frustrated or just stop worrying about it . . . and then the whoosh happens.

Celeste, I just caught up and you're doing so well--EXCELLENT job resisting all that stuff and you won't have to do that forever. Yes, more often than before fat loss, but you'll get better at planning and adjusting for that kind of thing.

Thanks Bytsi, yes, it was a great day! (paying for it now with 2 grumpy little boys, but hey, I'm the one who kept them out late!)

True, Karen. That's what I keep telling myself. And when I wasn't so restrictive, but still "dieting", I managed to fit that stuff in more often, so I know it's not forever.

 Yeah, it was actually embarrassing to try on so many jeans. But I'm so sick of going into every store and not finding jeans that fit! I kept apologizing to the dressing room attendants b/c of all the jeans they had to put away (dd also tried on several pr of 14, 15 and adult size 0). But they were nice. I'm so glad I stuck with it and found some that look good and I now know how what size I wear! (at least in old navy)
Well, no skiing today, and no return trip to Olean (I seriously considered going back since I didn't make it to Wal-Mart and I need basic supplies, groceries, and some Christmas odds and ends.) I took Taylor and Bethany to ski, brought Micah and Luke home and put them to bed for a while. Now I have tons to do here, so I'm interspersing hard work with internet treats for motivation.
Last night, 55 min on the elliptical (low intensity) while watching Amazing Race.
This morning, workout with trainer:
Foam Rolling (at home)
Mobility/Warmup from Maximum Strength
Circuits:
3 min high intensity on treadmill, stepper, elliptical, stepmill, mt climber thingie?
2 min weights on a specific body part, all upper body
1 min abs work
Alternated 3, 2, 1: 5 or 6 times, total workout 1 hr
I was SWEATING when this was over--it was a surprisingly good workout considering the "low weights". Though mostly I was using 15# dbs, and then 10's when my arms would give out.
I'm getting very frustrated about the body fat % not moving even though the scale is going down every day. I DON'T want to lose muscle, or at least as little as possible! I don't know what I'm doing wrong to cause that % to stay the same. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy about the scale #, but I'd be happier to see a different bf%.
you're doing so well, celeste! congrats on the itty bitty jeans and the scale drops!
my husband used to bible quiz as a kid and i've been to a meet - pretty exciting stuff! of course, we catholics never did anything quite as exciting, guess that's why i'm a very lapsed catholic, sigh...
