Bree, I'm wearing those pants today too! I keep stepping on them because they keep falling down (also no belt loops, not that I have a belt that fits anymore either).
I know what you mean about mothers. When I was bigger, my mom used to comment on it and relate my size to my sister. Now that I'm smaller, she's stopped. The thing is, my sister was always supportive of whatever my size was and used to poo-poo mom for it. That really helped and actually motivated me more than my mom's negative comments/comparisons. It is a tricky situation though!
Bree--cool about the pants! It's a little like my Sunday experience--I had on an elastic skirt that was way too big, but lots of material so it looked fine. My 4 yo was lying on the seat behind me waving his feet in the air, which got caught in the skirt and yanked it down! I had a long shirt on, so I don't think anyone got an eyeful, but they definitely would have otherwise! (I turned around and a friend's husband was beet red, laughing...I asked him afterwards if I flashed anyone and he said no!)
This kind of relates to what Christina wrote in her log about her dresses being too big (yay!) but this morning at work I almost tripped down the stairs! The fridge I keep my food in is in the basement so I was walking down there to get my yogurt, and my pants got underneath my feet because they aren't staying on my waist, (they don't have belt loops BTW) and I had to catch myself from falling. This is a sign that its time to buy new pants! I am endangering myself daily. I guess its a good thing, but its going to get expensive replacing all this stuff.
Yes, when your loose pants have become a hazard, it's time to replace them! And yep, that's a good thing.
I know its silly to complain about something like my pants being too big. Problem is I can't afford to replace them all! I might get some of them altered, but I just did that with all my jeans so I should probably wait.
Christina, sorry to hear your mom was like that. I know my sisters-in-law struggle with body image and I think a lot of it has to do with how their mother handled it when they were teens, and still to this day. She is constantly talking about people's weight!
Last night I did another super mod workout:
Superset:
Squat
15 x 45 - warm up
10 x 95
10 x 95
10 x 105
cable row:
10 x 75
10 x 75
10 x 75
Superset:
one legged RDL
8 x 25's
10 x 25's
10 x 25's
barbell push press:
10 x 55
10 x 55
10 x 55
Superset:
Rotational Lunge
12 x 25# plate
12 x 25# plate
12 x 25# plate
crunch:
15 x 10# plate - did these very slow and controlled
15 x 10#
15 x 10#
Intervals:
Treadmill - 1x 1 min. 5 mph, 1 min. 7.5 mph
6x 1 min. 5 mph, 1 min. 8 mph
I definitely had more energy for the intervals then on Tuesday so I pushed it a little harder this time.
Should be a NEAT filled weekend between cleaning the house and shopping all day tomorrow. Hopefully that will take care of the .5 pound I was up last night. I was a little unhappy about it but have to remember to not get obsessed with the scale. I had two cans of diet coke yesterday and think that might have something to do with it. And I have some DOMS from Tuesday, and I am expecting TOM soon so that also may be a culprit. I am going to wait it out and see. Its hard to be patient! Gonna drink lots of water today.
Thanks Pauline! I had lots of energy for some reason.
Here is what I did Saturday:
Superset:
Deadlift
w/u 12 x 45
10 x 115
10 x 115
10 x 115
DB bench press
10 x 25's
10 x 25's
12 x 25's
Superset:
Bulgarian Split Squat
10 x 30's
10 x 30's
10 x 30s
underhand grip lat pulldown:
10 x 85
10 x 85
10 x 85
Superset:
RDL w/ bent over row:
10 x 60
10 x 60
10 x 60
hanging leg raise:
12 x BW
12 x BW
12 x BW
Okay so this was pretty much identical as Tuesday's workout of a similar nature. I really want to bust out 135 on the deadlift. I will have to try it on Thursday.
Well, without going into lots of detail I am super bloated today and ate way too much yesterday. Not necessarily bad food, just too much of it. I feel so gross today. The only good thing is that I didn't sit down once yesterday. I was cleaning, doing housework, shoveling, and shopping all day so hopefully that NEAT will account for something.
Saturday was similar. We shopped for about 5 hours. It was extra cold out too so that made it much less enjoyable. I am crossing my fingers that all my NEAT will offset some of my food from yesterday. And I am expecting t.o.m. tomorrow, so I am positive that has something to do with how crappy I am feeling about myself.
/pity party
Back on track today with low cals and running at the gym. Oh and I will most likely have a great opportunity to shovel my driveway yet again this evening. It is supposed to start snowing this afternoon which means only one thing to me....the commute from hell. I think I might leave early and work from home this afternoon to avoid it!

My thoughts when reading this? Be nice to yourself. Especially when PMS-ing. Forgive yourself. I bet you didn't do anywhere near the damage you think you did... over-eating a little one day won't derail everything, and getting some NEAT in is better than sitting on your butt...
I say all this because I am hard on myself and am constantly told to be kinder and more forgiving... easier said than done, but beating yourself up does nothing except waste energy. You're doing great - just keep on keeping on!
I agree--you've been doing so well in every area, a little overeating, especially of good foods, isn't going to kill you. I can identify with the pms thing though.
Your workouts are still looking great, btw!! You inspired me to try the 3x10 thing with my workout the other day. I was doing 10, 8, 6, but surprisingly, I was able to do all the reps with the same weights! Thanks!

I've always taken anything my mom's said with a grain of salt. For a while, it seemed that to her the emaciated Hollywood look was ideal, even though it's not a shape she's ever had herself. She's gotten a lot better and actually asked me when I was going to stop losing weight this last time around. But yeah, the constant talk of weight does get a bit tedious!

Thanks Bytsi - you are right. I need to avoid the scale for a few days otherwise I know it will be depressing.

Thanks Celeste - I try to do well. Some weekends I fail! I like doing 10 reps. Some things I am not quite ready to go up in weight so I will do 12.

That's interesting because my mother in law is the same. For someone who talks the talk, she definitely is not the shape she pushes on her daughters. She works out a lot but I want to tell her - weight loss ur doin it rong. She says she spends 1.5 hours in the gym EACH day! She also told me she does cardio until the machine says she burned 500 calories. When we went together to my gym that day she had only gotten to 400 in an hour. No wonder she is there so long!
Last night:
treadmill 40 minutes
6.0 mph for 23 minutes, 6.5 for 12 minutes, walk for 5, 4 miles total
Well I was still feeling like crap last night. Just blah. But I had a good run!
Yesterday my food was way better. I ate some leftovers from Sunday for dinner but had a small serving. I made almond bark pretzels on Sunday which lead to my demise of eating too much that same day and brought them into work today so I won't be tempted by them! I love making baked goods and treats but I still haven't figured out how to avoid them and not overindulge.
I actually left work early yesterday because we were having a snow "storm" and when any amount of precipitation falls, the traffic comes to a screeching halt, so I went to work from home. This is why I dislike snow for those of you who love it: THE TRAFFIC I always wonder what it is like in other major cities when it snows.
It took me double the time to get to work this morning, and last year there was a night that it took me two hours to drive home - its only 15 miles people. So when I say I dislike snow, I love it for winter activities, but the drive times are quite annoying.
The traffic is horrible in Denver too when it snows, but I just sit back on the train and watch it as we fly on by. Getting up to the mountains some days is unbearable because of it, but usually, I'm willing to wait that out.

I once figured out the bus route from home to work if I ever needed to and it would take me an hour and 10 minutes and a 4 block walk at the end. So most days my 20-25 minute drive is bearable. The transit system here has been described as lacking. There are more light rail plans in the works but none that would affect my commute for the better.
I had a very busy night last night! First, it took me longer to get home because of accidents or something - whoever really knows why traffic is bad one day but not the next. Second, I had to shovel my driveway - more about that later, here is what I did at the gym:
Superset:
Squat
15 x 45 - warm up
10 x 95
10 x 105
10 x 105
cable row:
10 x 75
10 x 75
10 x 75
Superset:
one legged RDL
10 x 25's
10 x 25's
10 x 25's - these are starting to hurt my right hip. I think I will go back to two legged or start doing pull throughs for hammie/glute work.
barbell push press:
10 x 55
10 x 55
10 x 55
Superset:
Rotational Lunge
12 x 25# plate
12 x 25# plate
12 x 25# plate
crunch:
15 x 20#
15 x 20#
15 x 20#
Intervals:
Treadmill - 6x 1 min. 5 mph, 1 min. 8 mph
Then I got home and spent an hour shoveling. It wasn't heavy wet snow, but it was heavy enough. It was about 3-4 inches. I still had my heart rate monitor on from the gym and my heart rate stayed in the 130's-140's! This probably had a lot to do with the fact that the shovel I was using probably weighed 10 pounds. It was an old metal one. But, I was happy for the opportunity to burn some more calories. My DH said he felt bad he couldn't help but I told him I really don't mind the work - I am greedy when it comes to calorie burnin.
Then I decided to torture myself by stepping on the scale. Fortunately I am a little lower then my pre-thanksgiving weight. Not my all time low, but where I was holding steady at two weeks ago. So that is encouraging.
Looking good, bree! I'm subbing out the SLRDL's a lot these days, and here's what I've been doing instead. They are REALLY hard, but really hit those hammies/glutes!!!
Looks good - nice workout, nice shoveling workout - yay on the scale!

I feel like I am making progress - slowly but surely. My weekly deficit could be much better if I shaped up on the weekends of course. But I find that when I restrict too much for too long I overdo it.
Thanks Jane for that link! I had been doing a version of those during Fat Loss II but got the strangest stares because the swiss balls are in a different area then the weight room. I think I will go back to them though because of my hip. When I had some PT for my lower back last year she told me my pelvis was tilted up and to the right (my right). So I think this imbalance plays a part when I do one-legged stuff. At least it seems to for the RDL's.
Last night - cardio:
Treadmill, 40 minutes, 4 miles.
I have been running at 6.0 for most of the time but pick it up to 7.0 for the last 5 minutes or so then walk for a while. I want to work on upping my running speed eventually, but I do my steady state with heart rate range in mind.
Good job on your workouts! And shoveling snow is definitely cardio!
Did you get the Polar F6? I might have missed where you said you did. I have that same exact one and love it. However, I don't wear the HR strap anymore. It kept telling me I was going to die! lol
Good job with running also. I suck at running, even short sprints. I think it part of it is mental, though, because I hate doing it as well as dread doing it.

Thanks!
I asked for the new monitor for Christmas, so we will see what Santa brings me! And yes, we still open presents on Christmas morning at my parents house, and no, there are no children unless my 15 year old sister counts. Right now I just have the cheapest Polar - the 60 dollar one.
I think running is mental, too. I ran track and cross country in high school so its something I have always done. I attribute being active my whole life to my track coach! I much prefer doing shorter bouts of sprints or faster paced intervals to 5-6 mile runs these days. I just don't have the time to put in the miles, and I have had better success lately with less cardio more lifting
This is kind of random today, but I have seen stuff about Oprah all over the internet today. I really like what Leigh Peele said on a recent Fit Cast about why people obsess over Oprah's weight loss and diet and workout plans. My take on all this is that even when surrounded by people telling you what to do, and people to make your food and push your ass harder in the gym it can be difficult to succeed. And I also don't like how she considers her currnet weight a failure. I think its sending the wrong message to people who weigh 200 punds that they are failures simply by their weight and no other accomplishments in life matter.
But I can just see what is going to happen now...some lame celebrity trainer is going to whip her into shape and be hailed and praised and their word will be gold for the masses. There is another health and fitness board that I visit from time to time and all the girls there are drinking the Jillain Micheals Kool Aid. Now I can't say how her DVD's are because I haven't tried them but its just funny how popular tv shows and media have such a huge reach into everything people do.

Bree - I read a linked log about Oprah at Backinskinnyjeans.com - it was AWESOME! (check it out!!!). The blogger redid the cover (photoshopped) in a positive light and had a fake interview with Oprah, chastising her for calling herself a "fat pig"... It's not that we don't all have our moments and many of us have said the same or worse about ourselves - but Oprah is ignoring ALL of her success and influence, as if it means nothing because she isn't at a certain weight. And yeah, she's learning nothing from all the experts and trainers, because she obviously hasn't dealt with whatever her food / exercise issues are...
It makes me sad... The first fitness book I ever read was "Make the Connection" and I think Bob Greene is amazing. That book spoke to me and inspired me like no other when I started this journey. I even went to see Bob Greene speak live (an hour from my home) and have a pic of me with him, and showed him my "before" pics, etc etc...
Sometimes I wish that having a personal trainer and chef and all those people could do the trick - then again, we all know you can't "buy" health or purchase a magic way to stay at your goal weight... Oprah certainly has the $ to do that if it existed!

I wasn't trying to sound like the people she works with have no credibility, I think Bob Greene is great too. I watched tidbits of the Biggest Loser on Tuesday even though so much of that shows premise annoys me. Regardless, I see people flocking to anything Jillian Michaels says and people like my co-worker who bought Tracy Anderson's dvd because afterall, she trains Madonna and Gwyneth so it must work right? I think it goes back to the quick fix thing. If they can whip these celebrities and contestants in shape it should work for them. In a way its kind of refreshing in Oprah's case to know that not all the money in the world can buy you the body you desire. It still takes an individual to put in the work. And speaking of hot bodies, I suggest you check out the lastest cover of GQ with Jennifer Anniston. She is 40 and looks pretty amazing - photoshopped beyond belief I'm sure, but still. Not the body I will ever have, but still looking good and I respect her. I have always liked her for some reason.
Tonight:
Man I am beat/pumped up from this.
Superset:
Deadlift
w/u 15 x 45
10 x 95
5 x 125
5 x 135 - yessss
9 x 135 - grip gave out
5 x 135
DB bench press
10 x 30's
10 x 30's
10 x 30's
Superset:
Bulgarian Split Squat
10 x 30's
10 x 30's
10 x 30s
underhand grip lat pulldown:
10 x 75 - those extra 5# things confuse me, oh well
10 x 85
10 x 85
Superset:
RDL w/ bent over row:
10 x 55
10 x 55
10 x 55 - the 60# preset curl bar I like to use for these was in use so I used the oly bar and threw on some 5's - went really deep though
hanging leg raise:
12 x BW
12 x BW
12 x BW
Intervals:
Treadmill 2 min warm up then 6x 1 min 8 mph, 1 min 5 mph
Nice and sweaty and now feeling pretty shaky. I know my hammies are going to be sore tomorrow I can already feel it setting in. I am so happy to finally use the big plates! I felt so strong tonight doing those deadlifts. Its so funny how my body seems to be getting smaller but I am getting stronger.
HOLY COW!!!!! Wow, girl, you put your mind to something and then do it! I kept reading that you wanted to do 135# but you were at 115, and I just thought, take it one step at a time! But you ROCK!!! And the entire rest of the workout was just as killer, HOW did you have the energy for intervals?!

/random rant
I'm okay with 400m sprints, but I'm not fond of 800m ones or when we run a mile.
So is Bob Greene no longer her diet/workout guru? I noticed at the beginning of the year, she had all those people who where doing his Best Life diet. It seems like it fell to the wayside, because I recall maybe one update on them. There may have been others, but I stopped DVRing her show.
I like Jillian and all, but I couldn't have her as a trainer. She and I would get into a big time cussing match! lol

Thanks Celeste - I am not really sure! Some days I just have tons of energy. I am still trying to figure out if it has anything to do with what I eat that day or not.

Yeah 800's are killer! That was my race of choice in high school.
I don't know much about Bob Greene. I haven't really followed Oprah or seen her show in a while. Yeah I think I would get into it with Jillian too! I think she has a great body though - that is a look I would like to have!
I think Bob is still Oprah's trainer??? At least there's a blurb on the magazine cover that mentions him (I don't have the actual issue in my hands yet)...
I didn't see you as trashing all the gurus - but feel free to put down Tracey Anderson - anything over 3#s makes you big?!?!? ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the problem with the gurus and the media is that it raises expectations. They either give the impression that it's easy, or, like the Biggest Loser - that you're going to get huge results.

Yeah that Tracy Anderson chick is annoying. I wish some celebrities would use their power to endorse some actually healthy training. Although I imagine that's hard to come by in Hollywood.
Celeste - I saw that! Wow, well I am glad I could return the favor since you inspire me all the time

Anyway, just saying 'hello'.
Hello Anne
I agree - I think the message they are sending is wrong and that its easy to drop lots of weight and keep it off. I think it would be hard not to lose while participating on a contest like the Biggest Loser - but the rest of us in real life have jobs, families, and responsibilities that keep us from being in the gym with a trainer for 12 hours a day.
Well I was m.i.a. on the web this weekend! I was in photoshop hell yesterday with my Christmas cards. I always think it will be easier to make them myself for some reason, rather then just go buy some.
I had a decent weekend food wise. I only had one meal I would consider "bad" only because I probably ate too much of it. My DH wanted to make pasta last night, so I gave in and we had whole wheat penne with lots of veggies. I also had two glasses of wine
Here is what I did Saturday:
Squat
15 x 45 - warm up
10 x 95
10 x 115
10 x 115
cable row:
10 x 75
10 x 75
10 x 75
Superset:
swiss ball one legged bridge
10 x BW
10 x BW
10 x BW - ouch!
barbell push press:
10 x 55
10 x 55
10 x 55
Superset:
Static Lunge
10 x 55
12 x 55
12 x 55
leg raise:
15 x BW
15 x BW
15 x BW
After this I cleaned my house, went shopping, then went to Wisconsin with my family for my brother's hockey game. We stopped at a bar/grill to eat dinner and the healthy choices were slim because it was all bar food. I got a turkey club wrap, and besides the white flour tortilla, it wasn't too bad. I only ate a couple fries, too. Fries are one of my weaknesses so I consider it success.
I plan on hitting it extra hard in the gym this week since most of next week will be on the road or out of town so I plan it as sort of a week off, but I may try to do some running or see if my bro wants to go to the gym with me while we are at my 'rents. He is usually up for a workout!
I wasn't going to admit this, but I am debating joining the challenge. My silly non-excuse is that we are going to Mexico (all inclusive destination wedding) on June 9-14th and can gurantee 100% NON compliance and lots of cocktails, so it worries me that I will work really hard until that point then blow it all that week. It would be even more of a personal challenge I guess!
I hate holiday card time - last year I struggled SO badly with my printer and those pre-cut photo cards - they'd print sideways, miniature - anything but ON the damn card. And then if I took a break, it'd reset all over again!!!
This year, I just made 'em on a full-size page, 3 cards print at once from top to bottom, so I can slice 'em and they should fit a letter-size envelope - if it works out (so far so good???) then VOILA!!! SO much better!!! Now, if they'd just print a little faster - my printer is majorly slow in full color...
Send E-cards... LOL! I have never understood the Xmas card thing. People send them all the time but with email and internet it really does seem funny. I guess it is sort of a cool tradition though...
Bree I have to agree with the folks on here. You are doing amazingly well. Go ahead and do the challenge. It ain't like you are going for a "win" so much against the others but against your own deamons. That is a good thing.
