Rack and gym sooo nice. Working out with boys, not so nice, VERY SLOWWWWW.

I bought both of Leigh''s books today, WOOHOOO!

I really like having everything in my basement. The boys were shocked they could lift the oly bar, made them feel like men LOL!

They are 13 and 10. My 7yo DD did a pullup. The boys were very jealous and thought it was a trick LOL!

ANywas didn't do any particular workout.

incline BP
Lat Pulldown
Seated Rows
swiss ball wall squats ( my boys had terrible form with a bar! Its a no go)
DB shoulder presses
Ball crunches
Finished workouts because everyone scattered ARRRGGGGHHHH!

I have to figure out a leg workout for them that the form won't be so bad!

LOL Julie, that rack is too big for this screen :P

I should take a pic an post it!

Okay, I am mostly thinking outloud, so don't shout me down LOL. I have to get my diet in order. It is obvious that I cannot just eyeball nothing. I hate to weigh, I hate to measure, but if I don't, I get nowhere.

So for all this time I have known what I need to do, Ijust can't seem to get my @$$ in gear with life and stuff inthe way. I need to make menus up ahead of time and I need to make them switch and swap.

I don't know about ya'll but I need flexibility. Perhaps that is just a pie in the sky idea. I know that what I wanted yesterday , is not necessarily ANYTHING I would want today. I did find that out. Some things just sound yucky on another day.

I am so very busy and this is the busy time of year for my business. I have to make this easy in where I know what to do and just go and do it without thinking too hard.

Obviously my diet got me here. I do tend to skip meals, I do tend to eat only 3 meals. maybe I am thinking, well Ididn't eat a snack so I can eat more? or I am so hungry there is no stopping me ? LOL, no I am not that bad. But definitely the age is a factor here. I just stopped eating junk during the week and moved a little more in my 30's and it came off, it was baby weight but it came off. Now, it won't budge like that. It is kinda disconcerting.

Okay, here's where I'll admit that I'm almost compulsively organized about this stuff at the moment. I'll share my freezer list with you (no laughing out there). It's a mix of things that require different levels of preparation. There are hamburgers, chili, gumbo, meat sauce, lasagna, pork souvlaki - all of which need no prep, just thaw and reheat and/or cook. There are raw meats (pork, chicken, lamb, beef) which generally require a little more prep, but maybe only pull out the day before and throw some marinade in. Or thaw overnight in the fridge and pour some sauce over them the next night to cook.

It does require some work to start off. I'll get 6 pounds of ground beef at Costco though and do one or two of hamburgers, chili, meat sauce, meat loaf bundles (uncooked) on the same day. I'm only cooking for two though which does make it generally easier. The vegetables of the moment are broccoli, snow peas, and cauliflower. However, in the freezer are mixed veg and a stir-fry veg mix. I do a lot of pre-cooking and/or divide and freeze for the raw stuff. The list seems insane at times, but I sit down every night and plan my meals/snacks for the next day. If nothing else, I know what I need to get out of the freezer to thaw out.

However it also means that I can choose from a variety of things to have tomorrow for dinner (haven't decided yet). There's rarely any spur of the moment cooking, mainly because I can't trust myself to keep on plan. The raw stuff is so I can change my tastes without worrying I've got things I don't want in the freezer. For example, the chicken thighs are meant for a curry dish (sauce also frozen), but I wanted to try a more southwestern dish in the crockpot last night (salsa, corn, pea beans-had them, chicken, chili powder). If I'd frozen the pre-made curry (which I used to do a lot more of) then I wouldn't have the option to change it.

Of course, the house is full of spices, dried beans, etc. and not quite so many canned goods (the corn here). So I didn't have to go anywhere to get ingredients. A well-stocked pantry is a good starting point as well.

this works for me most of the time. I have written out and calculated meals - dinners, lunches, that I know taste good and fit in my calories. Then I make a menu for the week based on those meals. Then I (and this is the important and difficult part) - stick to the menu. Just as if I was having meals delivered or had a chef cooking for me (or a wife) - I eat what is put in front of me. I had to learn to stop asking "what sounds good tonight?" or "what do I want?". A little dying to self. A little parenting of my self. YMMV. hth.

Kelly I totally know what you are saying. Sometimes I miss the days when I was heavy and I just thought, what do I feel like eating tonight and went and ate it. Of course, I was very unhappy with my looks and myself.
That is one thing I love about TNT. Of course, you have to pack food when you go places because they often have very little that fits the diet. But, if you feel like a steak at 5 pm, you can stop and pick one up and don't have to worry if you have enough cals left or whatever.

I hate having to think about what I want to make. Anne, your idea is very similar to what I do. I'm coming up with standard quick and healthy meals that I have all the ingredients on hand. That way, I can grab the stuff out of the freezer or pantry, and I'm all set to go! Planning ahead is a huge help!!

This is awesome. What a great role model. Plus it seems like weight lifting and teenage boys are naturally best friends a lot of the time. I remember a lot of kids from my high school spending hours after school in the weight room. Good for 'em. (I remember a few girls, too.)

It IS hard to get everything together. I think it's mostly mental. Plus that part about making the time to plan everything. I tend to have my favorite regular meals that I plan over and over again...some weeks I'll have turkey burgers for dinner, maybe even a few weeks in a row. Then I'll switch to grilled chicken salads, then maybe lean steak and broccoli. I don't really write them down on a plan, but I can always look back at what I've tracked and see what I ate. It helps a little, in a pinch. You can just go to the store and know what you need to get.

As far as the age thing - I'm terribly jealous. This is what my mom used to say, too, when I was younger. She said when she was a teenager, she'd just cut out french fries and lose 5 lbs. The only time I lost weight effortlessly was when I lived at the dorms - I'd go to bed hungry on purpose, and I lived at the farthest away dorm, at the BOTTOM of a hill, so there was a ton of walking going on. A TON.

Now, metabolism is still a bit of a mystery...

Your brain just gets tired doing all that food planning, doesn't it? It's like trying to organize the junk drawer sometimes...

I am a hate planning, hate scheduling type too. But much like what others have said, freezer is stocked with various options. Pantry is the same. Fridge full of nuts, veggies, cheeses, tofu, eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt etc...

My local Safeway has some prepared frozen fish entrees that are not too bad for macros/ingredients list. I keep a few of those in the freezer to pull out for emergency dinners. Add veggies, fruit for dessert, it works.

I try and freeze things in portion sizes... like today, having entirely forgotten to pull something to defrost last night, this morning pulled out a ziploc of three chicken breasts. Two for hubby, one for me. I'll spice rub them and slap on the contact grill while I steam veggies (to be drizzled with EVOO or sprinkled with nuts and spices, depending on my mood). For a side dish, I'm going to whip up a quick tomato/cheddar soup in my Vita-Mix. It's fast and easy. I do fast and easy a LOT!

But then there are times when I get down and cook and then I try to make large batches for freezing.

The protein thing... well, even after a year, still a struggle. I aim for 40%... do NOT make it every day. But I'm far closer now than I used to be. I still supplement a fair amount with PP. What can I say? There's just only so much meat/fish/eggs/cottage cheese I can take. So if you have to do less protein, do less. Barfing isn't gonna be pretty, LOL! Give yourself time to get used to a smaller increase in protein, then maybe you can sneak more in as you go.

As for the fat and weight not coming off so fast now that we are older, well, it sucks. It's a reality I'm getting used to though. I could get away with so much more in the way of dietary "lapses" eight years ago than I can now. I've added some fasted cardio this past week... will see if it makes any difference to things. I did, for the first time this week, see a sub-39.0% number on my Omron meter! So maybe it is helping.

Anyway, celebrate the rack! I'm with the "we want pictures" crowd!

Would ya believe my husband watched me do my TRX trainer workout today and then said he thought he might like to do some weights at home? I about hit the floor, because this is the man who is half scared to death of anything but the machines at the gym! Of course, if I put him on the TRX, he may change his mind right quickly, LOL! I am like trembling after every exercise and after 25 minutes today was shaking all over and could barely manage to do 10 minutes of Nordic Track after. Still, I'll see if I can start to foster this idea of his!

Besides, if I clean out the garage, that alone will be a tidy few workouts, LOL!

I guess I ought to stop by this forum more often, but truth is, I'm behind with all forums and my blog too. I pop by here more to read than log. Anyway, good to see you and the boys are having fun with the new rack!

Cynthia

Kelly, I can totally relate ... I fought it hard for a long time. The sad thing is that if I had just weighed/measured long ago, I'd be where I want to be now. But sometimes you just aren't ready. I really don't think there is any magic macro ratio ... at least not until you are really close to goal and if things aren't budging. Just get a scale and start weighing.
Keep in mind with meal planning that single item meals are going to be easier to calculate. So grilled chicken, steamed green beans, and brown rice is going to be easier than chicken cacciatore with 15 different ingredients. And it's not forever. Just until you lose the fat you want.
I highly recommend that you read through both of Leigh's new books ASAP ... start with FLTS ... it will make a HUGE difference.

(I posted in Tracey's log about what I do for family meals ... since you had asked. )

Yep! I totally agree with Julie!

One thing I do is go shopping on Sunday for the ingredients for 5-6 different meals. Then I list the meals on the refrigerator for DH and I to see. I'll ask him the night before what he is hungry for.......most of the time he doesn't care, so I just look at the list and find what I'm hungry for and put everything out (ie, canned goods, meat to thaw, spices, etc.) on the counter before I go to bed. The next day when I get home from work, it's ready to go and I don't have to do any guess-work.

Like the others have said.........it's difficult to get into the groove but once you do, you'll be happy that you put forth the effort and kick yourself for not doing it sooner.

Thanks so much you guys, it really means alot. I really have no idea why it is such big deal for me to do the meal thing. It probably stems from having many many pots on the fire and food comes way down the list. I guess so many failures puts it in your head that it is not going to work anyway and you start subconciously going that way.

I am going to drag out the bike and dust it off for some cardio. We have about 5 acres and some rolling hills. I hate to walk it because of the bugs and knats and sometimes it is really wet out there however nice. I really want to get outside. The kids are due for new bikes and my older son went and got really really tall and needs a new one too, so I am hoping I get a hand me down from him. All I have to do is look for a comfortable seat for MY seat.

I am planning meals tomorrow. Period...

Stephanie, this is what I NEED! That might fit me well! Gives me some options!

Remember Babysteps and that you can do anything in 15 minute increments over a number of days (yes I am a former flybaby).

And I'm right there with you on the planning of meals. But I am worth it and so are you!
