I love doing this - at first I hated it, but now that I've become a bit more flexible, I really appreciate it. I just wing the heavy leg onto my shoulder and treat it like a front squat. since I'm 5'10, I don't usually need to turn it into a press!
Meh, tall people! I'm 5'2"--everyone's taller than me
Lessee... Thursday night, BJJ + TKD. TKD was sparring, but I couldn't move so I reffed. Very funny during the gold belt sparring: one of the guys let out a kick, and a pair of socks flew out of his pants! He said later he'd tied them around his shins as shin guards (which aren't allowed in our sparring).
I am sore and bruised everywhere. It's great. I have the most impressive bruises on my arm from BJJ. I need to get the camera back and take pictures. I've been freaking out everyone at work all week.
Last night, meant to come home and lift but ended up taking Mom out to dinner since there was no food in the house. I've had my pre-workout shake this morning, and since I'm writing this down so ya'll will see it, that means I have to go down and lift now.
Mom's been on a break from lifting because of taxes. She should be getting back to it this week.
BJJ-style warm-up. It's kinda sad when you have to practice a warm-up but I practiced. We do a whole bunch of short drills like crab-walk (forward/backward), bear crawls, & alligators (they look like "Spiderman pushups" except you move forward after each one--I'm still working on the moving part), as many as Tim thinks of that day. Then I added a few of the dynamic stretches and a few dynamic BJJ warm-up moves.
That second one, I was having a hard time with math. First put too much on, then only took the extra from one side and couldn't figure out why my left arm was struggling. *le sigh*
Back Extension (subbed leg raise on Swiss Ball): 3x6
YTWL: 3x6x5lbs
And I'm spent. No intervals, although they'd be perfect for BJJ.
Right now I'm cramming in as many BJJ classes as I can per week, one after the other, so I'm not getting much recovery time. That's mostly so I can learn as much as I can as quickly as I can. During the summer, TKD will move from T/H to M/W during BJJ class, so I'll be forced to have time off to teach at TKD, which will be a good thing. (I can pick up two more BJJ classes on F & Sat, but my longest streak per week will be 3 days. And I might have to be at TKD some Fridays for the Open Floor nights, so that'll give me an extra rest day.) And then hopefully by the end of summer, I'll be adapted to BJJ enough that switching back to the current schedule won't be so much of a pain.
I'm getting more sleep since adding BJJ, strange as that may seem. I stay at work later and go straight to class, so I can come in to work later. That means I get the extra hour or two of sleep that I need. And it's making a big difference: my eating hasn't changed, but I have a lot more energy and I don't have to have coffee to make it through the day. Wohoo!
That's great that you can get more sleep! I love coffee, but our office coffee sucks. I hate when I have to gulp it down just to make it through that afternoon stretch.

Our office coffee is actually pretty good. We have coffee makers that use individual pods, so it's always fresh. And there are lots of flavored coffees, too.
BJJ & Stage 3, A3
They're playing with class times as BJJ (new building + two martial arts schools combining = kinks). So last night we rolled for an hour and a half. Whee! I'm learning a lot, and the guys are taking their turn with me to teach me basic stuff. We learned this really cool armbar last night and then what to do if they try to get away--turn it into an even more impressive armbar by flipping them over.
Went home, made my PWO shake, and then decided to try 3A3. The Stage 3 workout A is a pretty good lifting set for BJJ--lots of hip, shoulder, and core work. So I figured I'd give it a whirl.
DB Snatch: 2x6x25lbs (both arms); 1x6x25lbs (right)
My left shoulder hurts. I don't think it's a muscle; maybe a deep bruise from rolling back over that shoulder? I go back that way more often than to the other shoulder. Anyway, it didn't want to lift any more. Today I'm icing it.
DB single-leg RDL: 2x6x25/10lbs Bent-over rows: 2x6x40lbs
Again using offset weights in the RDL. Couldn't stand on one leg on my own, so I did these next to one of the squat rack uprights for a brace when I needed it.
... laid on the floor and said, "Silly girl." Then:
Pushups: 2x10 Plank: 2x30s
Wipe out. Shower, foam rolling (oh! I'd forgotten I had this--fabulous!), and bed.
I bet you slept well!!! I'm impressed - strength-training AFTER your BJJ class?!?!? Wow! I've gotta get a foam roller...
Well, there wasn't much to it in the end Just making sure I really did leave everything on the mat. And I do still need to lift for BJJ, and there's no other time to do it at the moment except after class. Mornings are for sleeping
Cool. I did a nrolw workout last week after class as well, and it felt really good since I was fully warmed up. It did take a couple days to recover from the extra fatigue though.
My joints hurt. Shoulders, ankles, knees. Makes sense, I know, because BJJ concentrates on using your opponent's joints to make them move and then to submit them. But owie! I get to TKD afterwards and can hardly do anything. I'll adapt, I know, so I should quit whining.
No class last night. Tonight is BJJ and TKD. Testing for TKD is next Saturday! So we'll be drilling lots of forms & combos tonight. I'll be teaching those and then Martial War, since we have two guys who have to test on it.
I discover new bumps and bruises from BJJ every day. But it's still so much fun! We might have another girl join who has done some kind of grappling before. I rolled with her on Monday when all the guys started leaving early; she kicked my butt and then taught me how to do it (yay, fun!).
Then at TKD last night, some of the guys pulled out the mats to practice self-defense stuff. (To test for conditional black and black, you have to demonstrate some self-defense techniques.) So when they were finished, I dragged one of the guys over to play BJJ with me. Turns out one of our white belts did BJJ for two years, so he came over after his class and showed us a few things. He said he'll keep working with me, too, to catch me up on stuff. Wohoo!!
Meh, NROLFW workouts have been non-existent. I try, but I have no energy. Trying right after BJJ doesn't help. I'm a quivering pile of sweat after BJJ. But once TKD starts its summer schedule, BJJ will drop to 3 days (with breaks between!), so I can lift either the morning of BJJ or after TKD (I'll only be teaching there). So, until then & when I have time, I'll play around with squats/deadlifts, rows/pulldowns, and some ab work with lots of rest.
TKD, last night: I got to warm up the beginner class, so I made them do the Leg Matrix from Stage 3. Mwahahaha. I think they hate me now.
Whee!! (I just got back, so I'm still a little loopy/flying, so apologies if I'm incoherent, but I had to write this down.)
Class tonight was great. Again with an hour and a half. (Maybe they changed the class time? I dunno.) I finally finally got someone to tap during free rolling. And with a move we learned for when the other person messes up, and which we were promised wouldn't happen much. But I got 'im! Twice my size. Reached back & grabbed his knee, rolled him to the knee bar, awesome. He tapped, rolled over and looked at me, and said, "I can't believe I got caught in that." Wohoo! (and then he kicked my butt for the rest of the round. Oh well.)
And I caught someone else in another mess up and had perfect form on the ankle lock... but he has hyperflexible ankles, so the lock doesn't actually work on him. But he did tell me after the round that I did have the lock exactly right and that anyone else would've had to tap. Score.
I'm getting better at this whole thing. I keep getting caught in "Well, now what?" situations, though: I can do a little, and then don't know what to do after.
After class, I was standing around with the guys (because my legs wouldn't work to walk back for my stuff), and they decided to do tire flip and sledgehammers. I followed them out the back, and they've got a great big ol' tire out there. So we started flipping it. It's basically a deadlift + clean. I got 3 flips in, and 5/side sledgehammers. I've always wanted to do tire flips They told me after that the tire is 200-250lbs. Sweet!!
(But that also means I need to up the weight next time I deadlift, right? )
So, fun after class means no extra lifting for me tonight. I can feel myself starting to fade...

It really is true what people say - weight lifting truly DOES have real-world application!
That sounds like a lot of fun.

What a fun workout!!! Even though we do grappling, I suck at it - you must really be taking to the BJJ since you're getting people to tap out - yay!!!
I think he was thinking more, "What the heck is she doing--*splat* oh, that. Rats." He wasn't really working back against me. Still, it made me happy. There's hope for me yet!

*snort* Yes, because as a desk-bound writer I constantly have to flip tractor tires... (But oh my goodness it's a blast! And then you walk around the next day saying "Guess what I did last night??!!" I hope we get to do it again on Monday or Wednesday.)
Today, it feels like that tractor's getting its revenge, as if someone slapped the tire back on and ran over me with the tractor. Whew. Joints are still what hurt the most. (No lower back pain that plagued me on my earlier DLs, which is great because it means I had good form. And that tire would've let me know if I was doing it wrong.)

LOL!!! I love a good smartass. Dontcha just love it when the body is aching? I don't know why but for some sick reason that feels good to me.

I agree--makes you feel as if you've done something to be proud of. Though I think my body would like me better if I didn't keep beating it up so much.
This weekend was TKD testing. I didn't end up having to do my form. Testing lasted far longer than usual (and we had fewer students!), but they all walked in and had a collective brain-fart on their curriculum. *le sigh*
So last night at BJJ, I thought we were rolling kinda light (which I didn't mind because I needed a break). I could still breathe and walk after class... This morning, that tractor ran over me again Guess it wasn't as light as I thought. (Then again, I was working with a 170-ish-lb guy most of the night. And Monday night was rough.)
Last night was the last TKD class for the semester. We start summer session classes in about 2 weeks. Then I'll get at least 2 nights/week off from BJJ (but will add a second class (gi) on Tuesday, a Saturday class, and maybe even the MMA class on Thursdays). Until then, though, it's still 4 nights/week. So no lifting this week, but I'll probably start Stage 3 over again next week. I need lifting for BJJ. And I need HIIT. Meh.
BJJ is a lot of hip work. So in some of the positions, I've been concentrating on my "deadlift muscles" to pull me through some of the moves (like posturing up). A couple of times, I've lifted the guy straight off the mat! That gets me a "Geez, you're strong!" and then a good thumping. Doh. Need to work on activating my glutes/hamstrings more, though; I get it in posturing up, but not so much when I'm shrimping or otherwise moving my hips around.
And I think I'm undereating for my new (and growing) activity level. I haven't really been tracking just because I'm bored with it right now, but I've been getting hungry about 1 hour after a meal. I eat as much as I can at each meal/snack (as in, as much as my tummy will take, then wait a few minutes and eat again), but I'm still getting hungry. I'm trying for higher-calorie foods so I don't have to eat as much volume of food, but I think I might still be underestimating. Does this mean I have to track again? Darn.
*insert tummy growl* Yeah, that's not even an hour after, and I'm seriously hungry again, when at lunch I thought I was going to be sick from eating all that food. WTH?? Just hook a protein shake IV up?
I wish I had your problem, having to try to eat more!!!
Our new dojo officially opened, and we don't have the schedule yet, but Sensei is going to add some classes that are just grappling and just weapons, so should be fun!!!
Me thinking out loud... I'm no good with this time management stuff. I need a schedule that fits together and then I can just go--but putting it together is where I have the problem. Right now, "just go" is work + BJJ + sleep. I know I'm just being a wimp about not including lifting and HIIT (both of which I need for BJJ), but there doesn't seem to be any time. I know I need to just suck it up and add them both and do tired BJJ for a week or so until I adjust. Lifting/HIIT after BJJ doesn't work because I'm too tired; before would be great, but there's nowhere to do it (home is too far)... Hmm, I wonder if the campus gym is open right now. If it is, I can pop over there for a lifting session (although I probably can't do some of my fun lifts so maybe a modified NROLFW) before class. And once TKD starts, I could lift before that class, which is even more convenient because the gym is next the TKD room. And I can get some HIIT in here at work (research park = lotsa trails). Hey, good idea! Glad I thought of it
BJJ continues to be fun My coach and the guys keep telling me I'm doing great. One of them commented last week, on my 1-month anniversary in the school, that I'll probably make it as the longest-running female in the school. Sweetness. And they're still teaching me new stuff after class. I'll actually be a bit sad when TKD starts and I have to drop two BJJ classes a week .
Food is still an issue. I'm not tracking still (lazy ), so I don't know if I'm over- or undereating. Probably still under, since I'm still hungry. And this weekend I spent at my best friend's, and as usual that was either no food or junk food. So, this week, food goal: track again. One thing at a time...
Success! The gym is open (well, after this week, since this is graduation). So, next week I'll go check it out and see what modifications I might need to make to my workouts. I'll have to go during peak times *boo* but I'll probably also be doing stuff that no one else is. So it should all work.
Lift M/W before TKD and Sat before BJJ.
Ooo, and some lifting:
DL: 10x50lbs, 5x70lbs, 5x80lbs
Sad, but that's it Came home from BJJ and was nicely warmed up, so I needed to pull something. Probably could have gone heavier, but figured I was more tired than I was feeling so stopped before I hurt anything.
Last night was the advanced class, which means all the guys who will work on technique and not just on muscling me to a tap. So I'm still tired after, but not as wiped out as when I have to arm-wrestle all the new guys just to get started. Tonight is the beginners' class and then MMA class.
Edit: Been meaning to add for a while: I've tried foam rolling after BJJ, which feels great on the muscles, but not so great on the many many bruises One thing to have pain from tight muscles; another to have pain from bruises everywhere. And I have lots =P
I've been out of commission for a while, so it's cool to check in and read about BJJ. Crazy .. I'm still numb in my right hand from a flip that went bad over a year ago .. grappling scares me...
I get tired reading this log. Sheesh and here I thought I was active!! I love reading your tap stories and contact stories. Makes me want to pick up yet another hobby/interest.

Most of the guys take really good care of me, while still making sure I'm getting full pressure and sometimes full speed. There are few who would just rather muscle me around and make me tap; I try not to roll with them. And I tap fast, if I think something's gonna be hurt.

Do it! It's so much fun.

I went to Saturday BJJ for the first time yesterday. I wish I'd gone sooner! We rolled for nearly 2 hours and I got lots and lots of time with the experienced guys showing me stuff. Whoot.
And then...tire flips! I rocked me some tire flips. Two trips of 10 flips (5 down, 5 back), and then some sledgehammer on the second trip. And a correction on the weight: the tire weighs 350 lbs. More whoots.
After class, some of us went to Olive Garden. The guys told our waitress right up front that we were gonna need lots of salad and lots of water. She'd bring out one bowl and refill our glasses, and then she'd go back and put in an order for another bowl.
Our dojo's open house was yesterday, and in addition to regular demos, I did our women's self defense demo with sensei - twice! Owwwwww... But your BJJ posts make me think about it... My DH videotaped it, and I heard a lot of feedback about how amazing and intense it looks (picture a 6'4" 240# muscular big black man jumping on top of a 5'2" white woman out in the suburbs!)... I want to post the video of it, but my stupid computer says it doesn't recognize my video camera when I plug it in. Stupid Vista - hate it!!!
Anyway... your BJJ inspires me to stay tough even when I want to skip grappling, so thanks!

Welcome!
Sometimes when I'm in the middle of class and thinking about wimping out, I remember that I'm gonna have to tell you guys about it, so I buckle down and keep going. So thank you, too
*snicker* I forgot this earlier, but I was rolling with one of the guys on Saturday, and when we were supposed to switch partners for the next roll, he said he wanted to roll with me again. After a few rounds of that, he said he likes rolling with me because I smell better than the guys! (I should hope so! Some of the guys, esp. the newer guys, smell very bad! Our coach, Tim, has nicknamed two of them Smelly and Stinky, and he won't roll with them.) He's one of the really patient guys who teaches me a bunch of stuff, so I don't mind rolling with him, either.
I was thinking during the warm-up today, "I gotta get through this, because I gotta go tell everyone what we did today." This was nuts! (but fun)
So part of the craziness is because our coach, Tim, was supposed to have a fight at the end of the month. The first opponent backed out; the promoter found a second guy but then started coming up with all this extra stuff that Tim had to do in order to fight their guy. The last straw was a CAT scan, which costs ~$2k. The fight only pays $1k, so Tim would be out money if he took the fight. So he's raring to fight and has no one to take all his energy out on... except us
We did the normal drills down the mat in our warm-up, and then we partnered up. The first drill, your partner sits on the mat in front of you, back to you; you lock your arms under his and deadlift him up. Repeat 5x. Then your partner stays up; you lock your arms around his torso, pick him up, and carry him down the mat. He sits down, repeat the lifts and the carry.
We had an odd number tonight, so I worked in with two other guys, one who's a lot bigger than me (I'm so bad with guessing guys' weight, so I'm not even gonna try); I could just barely get him off the mat. (I kept thinking, "Flip that tire, flip that tire!" ). The other guy was in between the two of us in weight, but he was feeling sick so I had to try to lift the other guy. (He flung me up like I was nothing.) When I did the wrap-around to carry him down the mat, I couldn't get his feet off the ground! The other guy came back then, and he's shorter, so I did manage to get him up and to stagger down the mat with him. Tim wouldn't let me do the lifts again; he just told me to catch my breath and carry the guy back down the mat. That was plenty!
Then we did the next drill. Your partner stands facing you; you grab his hand, grab his leg, and lift him on one shoulder. Repeat 5x. Then lift and carry him down the mat. Repeat lifts and carry. Again, we had an odd number, and I didn't want to go all by myself at the end and hold up class so I asked the TKD instructor from the previous class if he wouldn't mind being my partner. I thought he looked fairly light. I was wrong. Sheesh! I got the lifts, but trying to carry him--whew! I know Tim was following behind me and holding on to him. Again, Tim told me not to do the second set of lifts, but just to get my breath and carry him back. I kind of wanted to do the lifts, but I was also glad I didn't have to. Wow.
There were armbar drills after that, and then two rounds of free rolling. (I rolled one with Tim--he squishered me. I laugh so hard when I roll with him: I can't do anything. Usually with the other guys I can at least wiggle my fingers. With Tim, nyuh-uh. Nothing doing.). I sat out the third round (odd number again), and then class was over. There's usually a gi class tonight, but Tim needed to get out some of his pent up energy so he grabbed one of the guys and sparred. Everyone else just kept rolling. I sat in my chair and could not move. When I finally did have to get up, I nearly fell back down! That class really took it out of me
But it was so much fun! And I got lots of high fives after the lifting/carrying drills.
Oh, and--there's a girl in the TKD class before us who sometimes stays with her mom and watches our warm-up. The girl's maybe 9 (? Again, bad with the guessing). Usually they sit on one side of the chairs and I leave my water at the other, so there's too much distance to talk. Tonight, though, they were sitting next to my water, and the mom talked to me when I came over after the warm-up. First she said that maybe I might have wanted to use her daughter as my partner on that last one; I said I'd been seriously thinking about it (but I knew Tim wouldn't let me do that). Then she said her daughter thinks our class looks cool and that she really thinks it's cool that I'm doing it. The mom said she can't believe I not only get out there with the guys but that I do the same exercises--including carrying people--that they do. I could only talk for a minute because I had to get back to class. (There's a kids' BJJ class, so maybe her mom will let her do it.) So I have a fan club
Isn't that fun!?!?!? Congrats! Can I get your autograph?
I often get told (by the moms whose kids do karate) how much they admire me and they go on about how tough I am... Which is kinda funny, cuz I'm NOT that tough. I'm mostly stubborn (and stupid? ), but I'm out there doing it. I try to get them to join in (if a 40-year-old formerly fat couch potato can do this, then anyone can!), but they just sit there with their snacks and watch the kids do it...
