Sorry for being brutal, but I've seen so many "wonder-diets", "stress-free diets", "low-carb diets", "fat-free diets" etc. All of them smoke screens to avoid the pain of being hungry. All of them led to gaining some pounds at the end of year, not losing.
The truth is so simple "eat less, move more". Simple and painful. If it wouldn't be painful, why would anybody be fat? Because, they read wrong diet books or magazines?
Muscles: ratio muscle/fat is based on genetics, testosterone, and some training. A woman will never have as much muscles as a man. A man will never never be as pretty as a woman. That is the way it is. And it is a well organized world, I wouldn't want my wife to be stronger than I am. I also love the fact that she is much prettier than me.

Am not touching the diet stuff as I think you have that under control, Susan, but I felt compelled to reply to John's statement...
I have more muscle than a lot of men, tyvm.
I know a lot of men who are prettier than I am, and it bothers neither me nor my husband one bit.
I'm not stronger than my husband wrt weight-lifting, but I also have no better cheerleader than he. He'd be psyched if I was stronger. I am "better" than he is, though, at other athletic pursuits, and he thinks its fabulous!
My world must be turned upside down!

As far as I know, last 50 Miss Universe winners were girls. And, last 200 winners of Mr. Universe were men.
I guess the world is not so upside-down after all. I hope it is is not going to change in my lifetime.
"I have more muscle than a lot of men" no reason for guessing. There are multiple open competitions where it can be proved.

Whoa. I can't really make sense of the argument above, so... I'm talking real-world here. When I go to the gym, I lift far more than a lot of the men there. Sometimes they stare, gawk, and make rude comments. I speak only from my experience, and try not to make generalizations about people I don't know. What I do know, is that I'm very strong, perhaps not-so "pretty," and my husband thinks that I am not only fabulous, but that I also kick a$$.
Sorry for hijacking your log, Susan!

First off.
Calories in-calories out is a gross oversimplification. you should read this for the basics.
Miss Universe and Mr. Universe are both appearance based contests all be it with different criteria. The same scope, different standards. one of the first standards for both competition are gender based. So your correlation is tautological at best.
Body fat levels are based on calorie intake-bmr+caloric expenditure. to view them separately is to miss the fact that these things are connected. Reduce intake, bmr goes down.. and so on. There is a TON of information put out by people on this very board explaining in great detail all of the factors at work. Take a look around.
While you are generally correct that:
More Test=more muscle mass (assuming training/diet/genetics are all equal, which they never are)
So speaking in untrained individuals generally men have more mass than women, but to say:
Quote:
|
A woman will never have as much muscles as a man.
|
Is incredibly short sighted, and under-emphasizes the amount of control people have on their physiques. It depends on what man, and what woman. training/diet/genetics so on.
And my wife.. is not guessing. I have seen her out lift men, out erg men, and out row men in 1 on 1 even competition.
She is not on drugs, she is lovely and feminine, and fantastic.
To view performance and appearance as mutually exclusive is a great mistake.

Stan - are you stalking this log? You say in your first post that you found it looking for reviews of a weider machine that she mentioned - and then you keep posting here and only here. To me your posts seem a little off kilter. Is there something else going on here?

Good to know, Lisa. I'll stop getting all excited, and let him dig his own hole.
(sheesh! I really am in a crappy mood today!)

The ketogenic diets (low carb) have a unique approach in changing your body's energy system from burning gylcogen to burning fat. They are hard to maintain though. I'm still absorbing the macro balancing approach and trying to stay at a level of consumption that keeps my metabolism from bottoming out while staying below maintenance. Am I hungry at this level? Yeh, sometimes. But not like I was at 1200 cals a day.
I'm training to lose weight, look better and probably my biggest motivator is fitness for western firefighting. I couldn't give a flying flip about muscle competitions or gender differences. So I'm uncertain of your point in that regard.

Susan, I have lots of friends who are (female) fire fighters. They are so tough. Do you fight forest fires, or structural?
So cool.

Strength is attractive in both men and women. I generally find people interesting/attractive who can do things well and who don't apologize for it.

I don't know if the word "stalking" applies to the Internet.

not my log - if Susan's ok with it, fine. The posts just struck me as a little odd if this was the only point of contact and you don't post anywhere else on the forum. No biggie.

Awesome. One of my friends was centered in eastern Washington and fought quite a few fires throughout Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. She's got great stories.
And those posts from JohnDoe were weird. Sorry my bad mood toppled over into your log, though!

No problem Willie
Special Workout A
10 minutes warm up on the elliptical
Squats: 70x40# I quit cause I kinda got bored My end of stage one squatting weight was 115#
Push ups: 30x45 degrees I'm currently doing 30 degrees and some sets on the floor
Seated row: 45x2nd setting My end of stage was the 6th setting
Step ups: 40x15# dbs My ten pound dbs have gone missing I haven't used them in so long My end of stage weight was the 25# dbs
Prone jackknifes: 20xbw Not impressive but I was kinda DOMed from my superslow weighted crunches last workout...and um, I fell off the stupid ball. Doh!
15 minutes of HIIT with 5 one second sprints.
My eats have been on-program but the scale is still not budging. I'm taking a planned cheat meal with my DH for our anniversary on Saturday and then starting low carb induction on Sunday. Depending how my energy goes next week I may or may not take the week off between stages.
