Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis

About NEAT

The main reason my just under 5' mother can maintain her weight (<120) eating 1800-2000 calories a day plus the 3 or 4 bags of candy she buys every Friday (and I forget about the chocolate bars she usually gets at the same time).

I think your doing the best thing for you. Lets be honest with all this workout stuff. Sure we have goals. Long term and short term, but in the end it's a long journey if you are not having fun now it will only hurt your long term goals.

You are wise grasshopper!

NEAT = non exercise activity theromgenesis -- in other words, burning calories all day with non-exercise movement. Walking around, parking at the far end of the lot, walking to the other office to talk instead of emailing, walking the dog, bouncing on your ball instead of a desk chair...

Leigh's book has great graphs showing the impact of this on calorie burn and fatloss.

Miss Diane,
Your plan sounds very conscious. I'd suggest keeping a log/journal of your energy peaks and valleys during this time. More in the capturing data mode if you want to look for any trends.

Good for you!

I am a pro at NEAT. Practice it regularly for the past years. One of the reasons I dropped the TV. If you are not sitting on your ass watching TV you can be out walking the dog or just be active. My job requires me to be in meetings usually on the phone as my team and customers are all over the world. I got a wireless headset and I walk all around the office as I talk. I know just where my headset range ends in fact.

Yep, have been trying to do that (up "NEAT") for the past month, since my chores have calmed down.

But only in seasonal bursts. Spring is the roughest, fall being moderate, and summer/winter downright pathetic.

Good idea and one that I started doing (in my paper log) a couple of months back. You guys think I babble on in here -- you should see my paper log!!

Back to log yesterday in a minute...

Brilliant idea with the pool btw! Great way to battle the heat. Today I think we are actually going to make it to the 70's here.

Is this pool outdoors? And if so, are you becoming brown like me?

It is and I am! Well, except for my lower back which hadn't seen sun in forever and is now temporarily lobster-like.

June 9

Stretch: 15 minutes

Elliptical: 50 minutes with Cardio Porn, I mean Cardio Coach.

Treadmill: 45 minutes at 3.5 mph walk with Cat Stevens and Jimmy Buffett shuffle.

Pool: None since it was storming all day.

Notes:

1. Meant to lift today but my crispified back didn't really want any part of it so I switched today for tomorrow.

2. Temp was upper 70s from the storms! I nearly froze my buns off all day!

So you'll be lived tomorrow today? Which would mean that tomorrow would be yesterday?
