Did you know - there are 4 calories in 1 gram of splenda (or one packet)??? I'm so bummed!! Here I was thinking splenda was a "calorie-free" food and it's not!! Given the amount of hot tea I drink (in addition to my morning coffee and my green tea w/dinner) I was probably consuming about 70-100 cals worth of splenda in a day! Of course, I wasn't COUNTING those calories cuz I didn't think there WERE ANY!!!!
I'm working on cutting down my splenda consumption and have some Stevia that I'm using now in my hot tea.
What I wanna know is, how can they get away with saying that there are 0 calories in a packet when that's not TRUE!!!

If it says zero cals... how did you figure out there were 4? I thought it was zero too...

Leigh told me! She sent me an email the other day asking if I used Splenda in my tea...when I told her I did, she emailed me back and said there were 4 cals in each gram (or each packet!). She also mentioned the calories in things like butter spray and cooking spray. While they are all very minimal, they add up! And when you are cutting (and only supposed to have 1300 cals a day) consuming an extra 70-100 calories that you didn't know about just SUCKS!!!
ETA: I found this on an FDA website:
Nutrient Content Claims
The regulations also spell out what terms may be used to describe the level of a nutrient in a food and how they can be used. These are the core terms: - Free. This term means that a product contains no amount of, or only trivial or "physiologically inconsequential" amounts of, one or more of these components: fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, sugars, and calories. For example, "calorie-free" means fewer than 5 calories per serving, and "sugar-free" and "fat-free" both mean less than 0.5 g per serving. Synonyms for "free" include "without," "no" and "zero." A synonym for fat-free milk is "skim".

True true... I only have about 2-4 packets of splenda a day depending on what I'm eating, so that's not too bad. It's crazy how little things like that add up though!

Oh man Tracey, that sucks! I know it is really hard to get used to taking away sweet stuff. Is the stevia actually calorie free? What do you think about its taste? Honestly, I never liked splenda because it tastes fake to me - I would always just use real sugar or nothing. But doing TNT I'm not sure if I can stand to not eat anything sweet for so long.

the sucralose itself has no calories - it is the filler used to make volume for the packets.
I use the liquid sucralose if I use it at all (I've only used sweetzfree of those listed)

I KNEW IT!!! I knew there were some calories but couldn't find it anywhere! I wonder what the Splenda for baking is. All I can find is 1 tsp is 0!!!!! I know it is not.
Then I have this butter spray, it says 0 too. How the heck to you measure calorie free things?

Sorry about your Splenda.
Have you tried any of the teas unsweetened? That's how I drink my teas and I love being able to taste the subtleties that would normally be masked by sweetness.

anything that shows 0 you can assume <=0.5. So I'd call it 0.5 for reckoning purposes. Not calories, but carbs. 1g CHO = 4 calories.

Tracey, thanks for that info on Splenda. Leigh didn't tell me that (see, told ya we keep it very short and sweet).
Green tea for me is always unsweetened. If you get a good quality green or white tea and brew it for the right amount of time for the quantity used, I'm with nutbar; you taste the tea much more. I wouldn't dream or sweetening my sencha or matcha. And this is from a guy who LOVES sweet stuff. Oolong, black tea or chai though... bring on the sweet.
For those who haven't tried matcha, I highly recommend it. It's the whole green tea leaf, pulverized into a super-fine powder. The amount of good stuff (catechins, antioxidants) are supposed to be much higher in this since you are consuming the whole leaf. Caveat though: it's not cheap. Teavana has it - I haven't tried theirs, which is significantly cheaper than the one in the link above.
PS: Thanks to all for the compliments. I felt bad posting in Tracey's log, so now its all about her again.

Splenda for Baking is a sucralose/sugar blend.

Splenda granular - you see how they word the label on the carbohydrates - I'd just assume 1.
