Agreed, but perhaps it's just a little too close for comfort.

You see that cone of uncertainty? Even the National Hurricane Center admits that 20% of the time a hurricane might not even stay in the cone!
That's why these things always concern us. If they're forecasting five days ahead and saying it will go 100 miles south of us, that's no consolation at all. Two years ago they were absolutely positive that Hurricane Rita was coming here to Houston, even up to 12 hours before landfall. It missed us by almost 200 miles. Paula got burned on that one by evacuating right into the path of the storm, like many thousands of others did too.
So we're responsibly concerned but also realistic that as of now nobody has a clue where Ike is going.

I get it ... didn't mean to make light ... I just wanted to confirm that Houston was where I thought it was (since I really am geographically challenged).
I'm sure the folks in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi aren't breathing a sigh of relief just yet either ...
When does hurricane season end?

The official season ends Nov. 30, although there's a pretty big slowdown in hurricane frequency once we get into mid-October or so. Right now is peak.
I didn't mean to come across nasty -- sorry if I did. You are correct that Houston is north of those old spaghetti charts. All I wanted to communicate was that for those of us who have lived here for a while, we understand the dubious value of a spaghetti chart four days out from landfall. Look how much they've changed in just the past 24 hours, and the hurricane isn't even in the gulf yet.
Most of us joke about the accuracy of these forecasts. Gustav and Ike were at some points forecasted to hit us directly, and my friends laughed and said that's when they knew we were safe.

I know ... it's like us with Nor'Easters. One TV station will forecast that we'll get 18" of snow and another 6" ... the reality is somewhere in between or way off!!

FWIW, I couldn't find Houston accurately on a map either
We joke about shoveling 6" of partly cloudy off our sidewalks . I wish I could get away with doing my job as inaccurately as most meteorologists... Can you imagine your doc saying you have a 60% chance of cancer, then being wrong half the time?

Well here is wishing you luck with the current impending doom. I have lived in NC and am with RL on this one. Yawn.... The weather people seem to make a living out of being wrong. I actually enjoyed most of the hurricanes that hit us down there in fact. They are heart-pounding and exciting and a real community effort. Not that I wish mass destruction on any place but generally speaking there are more warnings than there are mass destructions. After awhile it gets old. All that prep work.....
Anyway, good luck to ya.
Also I LOVE the artwork. Which camera did you use for these?

For the Geographically Challenged:
For what it's worth, I always look for the first big bay near Louisiana on the coast of Texas to find the Houston Area.
Karla:
I'm shooting with a Nikon D80, but the fact of the matter is I worked to get interesting/technically good shots on my less expensive camera before I treated myself to the Nikon even though I've wanted a Nikon for a very long time. And I've spent a lot of time practicing with the Nikon to get better with the settings. I'm finally getting lots better shots than just the occassional great shot.
This has been a really long day. I was at district court this morning for jury duty. I didn't get out of court until almost 8:30 tonight. I was on a jury pool for a capital murder case. This is the first time I've ever served on Jury Duty and it was really interesting experience. I learned a lot about the process, and different aspects of a murder case.

Well if you average our days we had normal days at jury duty
I'm officially pooped.
I think I'm going to go to bed here and then get up early in the morning and get my laundry done.
I took Simba over to Bob's this evening. Bob was over at his mom's putting the plywood over the windows. I introduced her to Simba and of course Durl went nuts when I showed up. After I dropped Simba off at Bob's, I went back down to his mom's and asked if there was anything she needed at the store. I got a few things and I'll probably go back tomorrow and get a few more things. I'm going to cook up all the perishable stuff in the morning and freeze it. Plus I have lots of Peanut Butter.
And with that, I'm going to bed. I have a load of dishes going and tomorrow is going to start early.
