I think we (meaning us people folks) have always gathered around food -- it just makes for good company and visiting. If there's not food there, what would we do with our hands?
Problem is, the food we used to eat was good for us -- good bread, meat, cheese, fruit and wine. Now, our "food" gatherings are centered around stuff that comes out of a box. We've kept the good tradition of gathering around food, but made a poor substitute with bad foods...
Kind of like how the hearty meals we used to enjoy after a good long day working in the fields. I still want to enjoy those big meals at the end of the day, but my days are filled with driving a desk instead of driving a team of mules....
