I admire your speed, as well as your running dedication. When I saw in another thread that you start your season now and hit longer distances in July, I thought, "She must live in Washington State".

Then I read ^^ and must come out of lurkdom to bow DOWN!!! HM training in FL, starting now? Wow. How do you do it?

Congrats on your times, as well as your setsy flat tummy. Great stuff.

hey sally. love your water pic. my blog (link on previous page on my 5k post) has pics of where I am in florida--lots of beautiful water!

I do one full marathon a year, this year it is spacecoast in melbourne florida on 11-30. we get up early in the summers to run--often starting at 5am. this season, I am trying to do a personal best--hopefully 4 hours 30 min. so my longest run will be 29 miles sometime in october. I train with the local galloway group. jeffgalloway.com the run/walk method helps in the heat. plenty of endurolytes and hydration. I am a native florididan, so I am acclimated. but the heat slows everyone down, even us natives.

thanks for coming out of lurkdom!

ok, so did my track mile today, all by my lonesome on an asphalt middle school track. when I left the house at 630, I could feel the heat and humidity--just stiffling.

warmed up a mile that felt easy and turned out to be 10:05. set my garmin for 7:30 pace and of course, as is my usual deal, did the first lap faster than this because it felt so damn good. then by the second half of the second lap, I felt like junk. gutted it out until the second half of the last lap, walked briefly, and then ran it in for 7:48!!!! a mile PR!!!!

I defintely thinking this will be faster next week because the college track is mondo surface and fast, I will have friends to pace off of and motivate me to push through the hurt.

I have set my garmin for 7:39 for next saturday, and I have promised myself I will run the first lap slower than this pace and gradually pick it up as the mile goes on.

I then had a banana and starbucks and went to the gym for stage 5, A workout--at the end of the workout are those darn body weight matrices from hell. made it through half of the jump squats and decided I had had enough.

wow, went back into the pool today--have been gone since the challenge started. it is long course now, meaning a 50 meter pool. even with no swim fitness, I am swimming extremely fast and well for me. unreal. I am a total and permanent convert to weight training.

Wendy, I haven't ran in AGES! But, back when I did run, I was slow as a turtle. I didn't care because I just liked to do it and wasn't doing it to win any races. But, now I am curious how much faster I just might be. I'm going to go for a little run this weekend just to see! You have inspired me!

Hey Wendy,

I just stopped by your log and your progress is amazing. I am like you a runner who lifts. I was a runner before I got serious about lifting and have seen like you great increases in running do to the strength. NROL and NROLW are great for runners I think, as long as your realize going in that one will take priority over the other.

What marathon are you running? I am running Chicago in October. Do you plan to stick with NROLW the whole time during your marathon training or are you going to switch to something else?

Anyway good luck and I will be following your progress!!

thanks julie!

jane, glad you are going to run! I just love it.

tcoy, read my chicago marathon race report here: it was surreal!!

Wendy's Blog: October 2007

I am running the spacecoast marathon on nov 30 in melbourne florida. the season starts may 17 with a mile time trial--hoping for 730-740!!!

I agree that the focus needs to change. interesting on that note, search for the audio on this site of alwyn cosgrove on fitcast--he answers my question about weight loss, marathon running and muscle. bottom line, he thinks you can certainly maintain your muscle during the season.

this season will be my first experiment. I am continuing NROLW but decreasing the days from 3 a week to 2, and adding 2 days a week of masters swim.

thanks for stopping by!

That was a great race report. My wifes cousin ran it last year and only got to finish mile 18. Every time I read those stories of that day, I am amazed of that more people were not seriously hurt or killed.

Good luck on the time trial!

That was an amazing read, Wendy!! I'd not ventured back that far on your blog so it was the first time I'd seen it. Wow.

I love that story and am too amazed that more people did not die. My marathon will be here in Portland. It is a very low pressure race and my intent will be to just finish it.
